Drilling slurry has become an effective aid to the construction of drilled shafts in caving and/or waterbearing soils. Historically, drilling slurry made of bentonitic clay and water was first used in the US in water well drilling as early as 1889. In coastal Texas drilled shaft contractors began using slurry, often made of on-site clay mixed with potable water, in the years following World War II, on a relatively routine basis. This type of slurry was used to "process" boreholes, in which the borehole was drilled "in the dry" until water or unstable soil was encountered, after which water and on-site clay were introduced into the borehole and mixed in place with the auger or other drilling tool. Drilling then continued under a slurry consisting of the uncontrolled mixture of clay and water until the excavation had reached a relatively impermeable and cohesive material. At this point, a steel casing was dropped into the hole and sealed into the lower stratum of impermeable geomaterial (soil or rock). The slurry inside the casing was bailed or pumped out, drilling continued to plan depth in the dry, a reinforcing cage was set in the partially cased borehole, concrete was placed and the casing was withdrawn. Some soil-slurry was undoubtedly trapped between the casing and the borehole wall, but the quality of that slurry was usually of no concern, because engineers of the period usually viewed drilled shafts as nothing more than deeply buried footings. Any unejected slurry would only serve to lower side shearing resistance, not yet considered in design, but would have no effect on end bearing. Over the last decade, lower ore grades and deeper mine environments have demanded that mining companies develop new technologies (tools and processes) to ensure a mine?s economic sustainability. At Inco Ltd., this demand has lead to the focus of technological development within the area of automation. Delineation (Drilling and Interpretation) is a key step in the determination of ore grade and location and therefore was chosen as a priority area for enhancement through automation. Focusing on the tools (the diamond drill) automation, significant benefits have been consistently achieved in terms of productivity, process efficiency, operational safety, cost reduction, component life cycles and machine reliability. It is suggested that optimum benefits have yet to be achieved, and will not be achieved until the human aspects of automation have been properly addressed. Since project inception, the human aspects of automation were recognized as critical to the success of the diamond drill automation project. However, it was only upon the installation of the Automated Diamond Drill in the field and its continued use on a daily basis that this issue received due attention. The human aspects of automation can be broadly addressed as economic, physical and psychological. This paper, with examples from the field, will discuss the human aspects of automation in each of these areas. The paper will draw from observations and experiences acquired throughout this project and recommend implementation strategies that should be utilized in future automation projects to enhance both the acceptance of automation and the success of the automated process itself.

"With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.IntroductionOne of the biggest challenges facing the aging infrastructure is the materials loss and deterioration due to corrosion. Many studies indicate that in the US alone, costs due to corrosion loss is more than $276 billion annually (Michiel et al., 2010). Corrosion is the major cause of deterioration of steel structures and components (MNC, 2005). Load bearing steel piles are used as foundations for various types of structures and hence corrosion is very much influenced by the environment such as soil, water and soil-water interface. Corrosion of steel pile foundations may result in reduced capacity in the axial and lateral directions. Hence, understanding the rate of pile corrosion is essential to select the appropriate repair methods to avoid excessive deflection and failure (Decker et al. 2008).To prevent the deterioration mechanisms that attack a pile, it is fundamental both to identify and understand the deterioration mechanism that has been the cause of damage. Understanding the deterioration mechanism allows the engineer to design a repair that will combat this type of damage. It is widely recognized that the corrosion of carbon steel in soil, water and soil-water interface proceeds according to the following simplified anodic reaction and cathodic reactions in the presence of oxygen (Decker et al. 2008)."

Flotation separation and recovery of value minerals from ores containing fibrous silicate minerals are known to be quite challenging. Earlier studies have established that the metallurgical challenges (poor selectivity and recovery, high energy consumption, etc.) arise from the impact of the fibrous minerals (with high aspect ratio) on pulp rheology, which was found be rather complex. The complex rheological behavior of ore suspensions containing particles with high aspect ratio and its influence on flotation outcome are investigated in this study. Flotation tests and rheological measurements were carried out with both ores (containing fibrous minerals) and a model system comprising nylon fibers (chemically inert) added to a copper ore that had no fibrous mineral. These studies allowed the determination of contributions of physical properties of the fiber to pulp rheological behavior. Optical microscopy images of the fiber pulp indicated that the fibers entangled to form two levels of microstructures: two-dimensional (2D) aggregates under semi-dilute (< 20% solids) conditions and three-dimensional (3D) microstructures at concentrations > 30% solids. The yield stress (σ) values determined for the fiber pulp were logarithmically related to the volume fraction of the 2D/3D structures. The relationships developed here for different ARs showed that the yield stress of a flotation pulp changes with respect to shape, size, and the concentrations of the microstructures. Implications to the effects of such entangle networks on selectivity of flotation separation are discussed.

Bacterial leaching of low grade quartz felspar porphyry copper ore was studied in large-scale laboratory percolation leaching columns.Limitations in the release of soluble copper showed up before fifty per cent recovery, due to occluding precipitates of iron oxides and hydroxides. Precipitates were removed by increasing the acidity of irrigation feed four-fold with respect to sulphuric acid. However, irrigation at low pH (pH 1.5) inhibited copper leaching. Resumption of bacterial leaching at pH2 was achieved by introducing a period of non-irrigation. The results suggest a &apos;direct&apos; attack by bacteria on the chalcopyrite substrate rather than an &apos;indirect&apos; ferric-leach mechanism.

"INTRODUCTION .Very little information regarding coal mining in Spain has been published in the American technical press, and few people realize the extent of this industry or the conditions under which coal is mined. The information in this publication was collected in 1945 and consists of personal observations in Spain, statistics, and other data of a, general nature obtained from official sources.Spain produces bituminous coal, lignite and anthracite, but the total tonnage mined is less than the national requirements. Before the war, an appreciable tonnages coal was imported from Great Britain under the Anglo-Spanish treaty, which rebated import duties and effectually prevented competition from any other foreign source. The war stopped the major part of the important of British coal and caused rapid expansion of the domestic sources, but this was not sufficient to supply the industrial demand. Coal that formerly was not acceptable to industry because of quality is now mined and marketed. The Government, allocates the better-grade bituininous coal to the various industries in accordance with the national importance of the work in which they are engaged; for example, the railroads are allotted 100 percent of their requirements, but cement companies can obtain only 25 percent.The Government offered to inducements to increase the production of coal of any class, but the larger part of the increased tonnage obtained was in inferior grades; as a result, the lignite production was taxed, while a bonus was paid for bituminous-coal production in excess of the 1942 tonnage.The anthracite and bituminous-coal areas were severely damaged during the Civil War and many experienced miners migrated to the lignite mines in eastern Spain. This has resulted in an acute shortage, particularly the Province of Oviedo where the most important bituminous-coal deposits are located."

It is now 38 years since the publication of the first edition of "Extractive Metallurgy of Copper" by Professor W.G. Davenport and the late Professor A.K. Biswas. The text book would be issued in a total of five editions, soon became the standard for students and those in industry. Interestingly it was published at the onset of great change in the industry. This was a time when sulphur dioxide controls in the USA were introduced, and almost simultaneously, world oil shocks caused significant increases in the cost of fuel - all leading to efforts to adopt new technology and move away from the reverberatory furnace, which had no potential for sulfur capture and required large amounts of fuel. At the time of publication of the book, new processes such as the Noranda Process and the Mitsubishi Process were in their infancy, while flash smelting (which was first commercialized in 1949 at Harjavalta, Finland) had made significant in-roads in boosting copper output, with some 22 new flash smelters licensed by 1976. Computer technology and associated process control techniques were rudimentary compared to systems today, available physico-chemical data remained largely in tabulated format and needed to be manually entered into the main frame computers of the era, while modeling techniques common today had not yet been developed. The copper industry has therefore seen immense changes since the time of this textbook: world tonnage of smelted copper has risen from 7.34 million tonnes/year in 1976 to 16.7 million tonnes/year in 2012, over a two times increase. Technologies such as the El Teniente Process, or Top Submerged Lance technologies, typified by the ISASMELTTM, not commercialized at the time, now treat large tonnages of copper concentrate in a single furnace. Advanced heat and mass balance software and thermochemical modeling are now used extensively to examine chemical and physical characteristics for process design and to support process optimization. These changes in the industry have been chronicled in subsequent editions of the book. This paper looks at the issues and problems seen in 1976 and over the intervening years, and compares this with the challenges facing the industry with the available tools and technologies today. Some ideas looking into the future are also discussed in the paper.

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

In 2017, Nicholson Construction Company completed a $72.1 million design-build contract for Miami Dade Water and Sewer Department to replace an existing 54-inch diameter pre-stressed concrete force main that runs from the Virginia Key Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant, under the Biscayne Bay at Norris Cut, to Fisher Island. In order to install the new sewer pipe below the bottom of Biscayne Bay, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) was launched from a 42ft diameter and 89ft deep shaft on Virginia Key and a precast segmentally lined tunnel was constructed towards a 28ft diameter and 72ft deep retrieval shaft on Fisher Island. Both shafts were constructed through sand and highly permeable limestone, primarily the Fort Thompson Formation which is part of one of the most permeable aquifers in the United States and two different techniques were used to ensure a water-tight shaft at each end of the tunnel drive. The launch shaft structure was built using the secant pile technique, wet excavation and a tremie plug. For the tunnel break-in a soil freeze block was installed after the ground was treated with low mobility grout. The retrieval shaft was built using the Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technique and excavated in the dry. Precedence of any other structure built this deep through hard layers (UCS over 3,000 psi) using this technique was not found. This case study addresses the challenges of constructing watertight underground structures in highly porous ground for launching and retrieving a TBM. Design challenges from complex asymmetric loading, selection and comparison of the construction techniques, the installation and excavation of both shafts, and their performance are also discussed herein.

The mineralogy of the Avalon Nechalacho deposit is complex with significant fractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb found in refractory minerals such as zircon and fergusonite. Sulphuric acid baking followed by water leaching can be used to extract REEs from flotation concentrates, but acid baking does not completely "crack" the zircon and fergusonite, so the extractions of Zr, Nb, and HREEs are not high. An alternative flowsheet has been developed that is able to obtain significantly improved extractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb from flotation concentrates or acid bake residues. This is accomplished by cracking the zircon and fergusonite minerals with caustic soda at high temperatures, followed by water washing to recover excess caustic soda and soluble sodium silicates and phosphates. REEs, Zr, and Nb in the solid residue can then be solubilized with HCl or H2SO4. This paper highlights some of the findings from an extensive laboratory program and discusses several flowsheet implications.

On the basis of the Law on Financing Hard Coal Mining dated 28 December 2007, the subsidized German hard coal mining industry will be shut down to the end of the year 2018 in a socially acceptable manner; in 2012 this decision will be reassessed. Even after the abandonment of all mining activities subsequent burdens are inevitable. In this paper, the possible long-term effects resulting from a mining industry history, which is spanning more than 200 years, and their possible consequences are pointed out, in particular in connection with the abandonment of mine water drainage measures which is economically meaningful in the long term. According to the decision situation as it presents itself today, this point in time will be far beyond 2018. In preparation for this, an action framework is to be developed in areas possibly affected.

A wide range of drill holes and process streams are sampled for resource estimation, grade control, and contractual purposes in the minerals industry. However, despite the availability of training courses, conferences and both national and international standards on correct sampling practices, it is still surprising how often little attention is given to ensuring that representative samples are collected for analysis. The reason for this is that the responsibility for sampling is often entrusted to personnel who do not appreciate the significance and importance of sampling, with cost being the main driving force rather than whether the sample is representative of the material from which it was extracted. This seriously undermines the precision and accuracy of the analyses subsequently generated and can render the analysis process a total waste of time and money and expose mining companies to serious, potential, financial losses. Company management needs to reverse this situation and ensure that sampling is given the attention it deserves to generate representative samples for analysis.

"Column flotation circuit engineering has matured to a good level of understanding regarding testing, scale-up and design. Some of the factors important to the process of implementing columns are addressed in this paper, highlighting the following issues• operating bias and the maximum achievable solids carrying rate for a column application.• internal circulating loads of full scale and pilot plant flotation columns• short-circuiting oflarge scale columns and the impact on separation selectivity• the number of stages in a column circuit and the impact on selectivity.The paper uses several case studies, from pilot plant to full scale implementation, to illustrate these design issues.1. IntroductionTen years ago, in 1984, there were very few column flotation installations world wide and the largest columns were about I . 5 to 2 m diameter or square. During the following decade there have been in the heighbourhood of 80 column installations that have been successful and profitable, as both retrofits and green-fields plants. Now, columns as large as 3 to 4 m are not uncommon. Examples of installations with many large columns include Escondida, with ten columns each at 4 m square, and P T Freeport Indonesia, with 21 columns: nine 3 m diameter columns, four 2.4 m diameter columns and, starting up in April I 995, eight 3.6 m diameter columns.During this growth period there have also been column installations that can be considered as failures. In the majority of these cases, the reason for their failure has been an insufficient installed capacity for applications where there is a high weight recovery of solids to the froth product These include zinc cleaning, copper cleaning and iron ore flotation (silica flotation from a feed that is 15 to 30 %Si02) An application with high weight recovery to the froth product makes column scale-up and circuit design more complicated. This is particularly so if a high degree of selectivity is also required while attaining a high weight recovery, which can happen with iron ore flotation in columns."

1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1984, 12 companies operated 27 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 57% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 35% of the production; Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee 25%; Alabama, Arkansas, Texas, South Carolina, and North Carolina 20%; other States 20%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1984 was valued at $7.2 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the east-central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 35% of domestic consumption in 1984, transportation, 20%; building, 18%; electrical, 9%; consumer durables, 8%; and other uses, 10%.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. Manganese-oxide minerals occur in irregular pockets distributed through the residual clays of the Cartersville district, which lies 45 miles north-west of Atlanta in Bartow County, Ga. The district produces, or has produced, limonite, barite, specular hematite, ochre, ferruginous manganese, manganiferous iron are, as well as manganese. Bureau of Mines engineers have visited the district on three occasions - in December 1939, February 1941, and October 1942. During the visit of February 1941, 80 tons of samples of manganese-bearing clays were taken from seven properties for ore-dressing tests, which were conducted at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Rolla, Mo. The. October 1942 visit was for the purpose of reappraising the district in the light of knowledge gained from the ore-dressing studies and to prepare a plan for the district&apos;s development. Exploratory drilling was begun in March l943 and was continued until June 1945. Nine properties were explored that, roughly follow a line beginning near Cartersville and extend to a point 2 miles northeast of the village of White. The work consisted of bulldozer trenching, rotary bucket churn drilling, sampling, and analytical determinations. The manganese district is 18 miles long with a maximum width of 7 miles at Cartersville, which lies at the center of the district. The work of the Bureau was confined to the northern half of the district between Cartersville and Pine Log. The properties explored comprise but a small portion of the Potential producing area.

There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general.
