The production of oil and gas in Arkansas is confined to two distinct and widely separated regions of the state; namely: (1) South Arkansas in the Gulf coastal plain, where 49 fields-many containing two or more reservoirs or pools-yield oil, condensate and gas from beds in the Cretaceous and Jurassic, and (2) Northwest Arkansas, a part of the Arkansas Valley, where only dry gas is produced in 21 fields from sandstones of Pennsylvanian age. Exploration during the year 1945 centered largely in these two producing regions, but some of the geophysical surveys were made and wildcat drilling was done a considerable distance outside these regions.

Este trabalho visa apresentar os resultados obtidos através de ensaios balísticos realizados em sistemas de blindagem multicamada tendo como camada intermediária o compósito de poliéster reforçado com fibras de juta. Seguindo as especificações da norma americana NIJ 0101.06, foram realizados ensaios balisticos utilizando munição de calibre 7,62 x 51 mm, que possui velocidade acima de 800 m/s. A blindagem multicamada utilizada possui como camada frontal uma pastilha hexagonal cerâmica (alumina dopada com 4% de nióbia), segunda camada de compósito de matriz poliéster reforçada com manta de juta e terceira camada uma placa de alumino 5052 H34. A utilização de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais em substituição às fibras de aramida é de grande interesse, pois além de desempenharem a mesma função no sistema de blindagem, possuem um valor de mercado bem menor. Os resultados de profundidade de indentação na plastilina atenderam a norma NIJ 0101.06 e utilizando a técnica de microscopia eletrônica de varredura, verificou-se que o compósito poliéster-juta capturou os fragmentos cerâmicos através do mecanismo de incrustação mecânica.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. O emprego das ligas NiTi proporcionou a fabricação de instrumentos endodônticos com diferentes desenhos de lâminas cortantes. Este estudo investigou a relação entre as características geométricas destes instrumentos e a força apical necessária para inseri-los em canais artificiais em blocos de acrílico. A força apical foi registrada através de um dispositivo de bancada de testes. Dez instrumentos de cada tipo ES, Mtwo, ProFile GT, ProFile GTX, K3, RaCe e PTU F1 foram testados a uma velocidade de 300 rpm e um torque de 5 Ncm com um movimento vertical de 17 mm de comprimento. Os dados foram comparados por análise de variância (a = 0,05). Avaliação geométrica e dimensional mostrou que o instrumento K3 tem a maior área de seção transversal, seguido por PTU F1 e GT. Os ângulos helicoidais menores de RaCe, ES e GTX podem ter contribuído para os baixos valores de força apical encontrados. Maiores valores de força apical foram determinados nos instrumentos GT, K3 e PTU F1 em relação à RaCe, ES e GTX. Foi observado que a força apical exercida durante o preparo do canal está diretamente relacionada à área de seção transversal e aos valores dos ângulos helicoidais dos instrumentos.

Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

Tradicionalmente en la industria minera, el flujo principal del proceso funcional para la evaluación de recursos y reservas procede de geólogos que elaboran el modelo geológico, de allí a los geólogos que hacen la estimación de los recursos (los modeladores) quienes estiman los grados, y a los ingenieros de mina que desarrollan el diseño de la mina y su calendario. La interfaz entre estas tres disciplinas no está siempre exenta de baches. Las presunciones hechas durante una etapa del proceso no siempre son comunicadas a los demás, a pesar que la mayoría de las empresas mineras tienen procedimientos y protocolos establecidos para promover la comunicación a lo largo de las distintas disciplinas. Estos procedimientos no siempre logran su propósito debido a una variedad de razones que incluyen restricciones de tiempo, no tener disponible a las personas apropiadas, o a una falta de entendimiento de lo que las otras disciplinas requieren, y el proceso de traspaso puede degenerar en el envío de archivos a la siguiente disciplina en el flujo de proceso. Este artículo se ocupa de la interfaz entre la estimación del recurso y las disciplinas de la ingeniería de minas y el esquema de algunas de las presunciones comunes hechas al generar un modelo del recurso y los riesgos que los ingenieros podrían correr al elevar los grados de corte, optimizar calendarios o realizar predicciones. Improving the accuracy of the performance prediction models for hard rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is important in estimation of the schedule and cost of tunnelling in related projects. The effects of rock mass on performance of TBMs has been studied extensively, yet due to the complex nature of the process, impact of many parameters influencing machine advance rate are not very clear and there is still room for improvements. More accurate estimates can be obtained by better understanding of operating parameters in various geological conditions and can lead to matching machine specifications with job conditions, optimizing machine performance, and avoiding long delays and downtime for increased productivity. This paper will offer review of two case histories including Queens Water tunnel in New York and KCRC project in Hong Kong. The analysis of the available field data, including the geological back mapping and results of laboratory testing of rock mechanical properties, machine operational parameters and achieved rate of penetration will be presented. This includes statistical analysis of available field data to provide a better understanding of the influence of rock mass properties on performance of hard rock TBMs as well as related formulas to improve performance estimates.

The subject which I have chosen for my paper is one that I am sure has occurred to the minds of nearly every mining man on these goldfields at some time or other. I refer to the carrying out of hydraulic mining on a fairly large scale on some ofthe alluvial areas of the West Australian goldfields. There are many, no doubt, who have the question ready at the present moment, "But where is the water coming from? " However, the great difficulties in the way are not due to the want of natural facilities, but due to the fact that sufficiently large areas cannot be leased for this purpose under the present Mining Act. Now, ever since the inception of the West Australian goldfields there has been the old familiar cry when referring to some alluvial gully or flat, "I wish I had a head of water to sluice that ground," but what seems an impossibility at times can be brought to a very great possibility by the use of a little thought and the expenditure of the necessary capital. This is so as regards West Australia with sluicing which, in spite of the its having so many detractors, can be carried out successfully in certain localities if the ordinary facilities on the part of the Govenment are given, and on the other hand the necessary capital is supplied. Alluvial gold areas, I propose now to draw your attention to first of all, the numerous alluvial areas that exist around Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, Bulong, Kurnalpi and many other centres. The mass spectra of four tertiary butyl substituted thiophenes are reported. A comparison and contrast with earlier structure correlations made by API-RP48 mass spectroscopists is presented. The fragmentation routes of these types of molecules are discussed and explained in terms of existing theories in mass spectrometry. Low ionization voltage data are presented to support the mechanistic picture developed. Structures are inferred about some of the ions, and these are correlated with existing theories. Metastable peaks in the spectra are used to support the fragmentation paths. The presence of doubly charged ions in the spectra is noted and the possible implications toward mechanisms discussed. The general picture of simple, small fragments leaving the ion moiety upon further fragmentation is developed in detail. Some suggestions are presented for further work utilizing isotopically labeled molecules to establish firmly the general picture of fragmentations of the alkylthiophenes.

The Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed an experimental coke oven, using a commercial oven as a model where practicable. Because the rate of carbonization is important in determining the quality of the coke produced and may affect the "mount of pressure developed during carbonization, particular attention was given to those elements of the design that govern the heat transfer to the charge. The new oven deviates in design from most existing test ovens in that the charge is full width (17 inches), the heating walls ore constructed of 4-1/2-inch silica brick, and zoned, heat-input arrangements compensate for heat losses at the ends, top, and bottom of the charge. This report describes the oven, which was designed by H. S. Auvil and installed under his direction, at the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., while he was supervising, engineer, Coke Section. It gives the results of a limited number of carbonizing tests. These results indicate that the main objective in designing and building this oven, that off duplicating commerical, slot-oven carbonizing conditions, has been accomplished; if coke-discharge conditions simulate commercial-oven conditions, the cokes from the experimental oven arc very similar to oven coke, in soma tests being fully as close is duplicate tests from a Angle batch of coke.

Mining engineers frequently encounter complex design problems for which the critical components of the design are difficult to quantify or compare. Teams of people typically work on these designs and human perceptions and judgments play a strong role. To assist with this process, the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) as a decisionmaking tool is described in this paper. Although the technique is used in many other disciplines, it is currently not widely used in mining engineering in South Africa. To use the AHP process, the problem should be treated as a hierarchy that defines the goal, the alternatives to reach it, and the criteria for evaluation of these alternatives. Pair wise comparisons are conducted on the criteria of the hierarchy to establish priorities. The value of the technique is that it is simple to test for consistency amongst the pair wise comparisons to ensure that the answer obtained is better than that provided by a random selection. To illustrate the technique, the use of a backfill support system in a platinum mining project was investigated. Ten design parameters, which will be impacted by the use of backfill, were identified and weighted according to their relative importance. The result of the AHP evaluation was that the use of a backfill support system should be preferred to a conventional support system at the mine.

Recent studies indicate that the United States halt substantial reserves of ilmenite, one of the major titanium minerals. However, the studies showed that sources of rutile, another important source of titanium are limited. This paper summarizes and evaluates results and conclusions reached by the various investigations initiated by the Bureau of Mines and others pertaining to the titanium mineral resources of the Nation. Domestic occurrences of ilmenite that are economically exploitable by present-day beneficiation methods are found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. These deposits are estimated to contain 50.3 million tons of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Occurrences of ilmenite that cannot be processed economically under present technological conditions are found in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. These reserves amount to 51.1 million tons of TiO2. Reserves of rutile found in the United States are estimated to be 1.8 to 2.1 million tons of TiO2. Other than occurrences in Florida and South Carolina, rutile is found either in small scattered bodies or in deposits where the mineral cannot be recovered economically by present beneficiation methods.

El presente texto describe los principales métodos usados en las etapas de prospección por petróleo para así establecer la inversión en la búsqueda de petróleo. La exploración de petróleo es una de las más riesgosas dado que los estudios geológicos previos a la zona, no siempre se corresponden las espectativas de la inversión. Pese a estos inconvenientes, el petróleo se sigue consolidando como la principal fuente de energía del país, tanto por su Es bajo costo, poder calorífico y las ventajas para el transporte y manipuleo. De forma que la provisión de productos de petróleo, como su abastecimiento nunca ha representado un problema en el país, sobrepasando los 15 000, 000 barriles de petróleo hacia 1958. De otro lado, el circuito de prospección de petróleo comprende la roca reservorio, la roca madre y la roca sello, cuya acumulación de capas genera irregularidades y forma las trampas petrolíferas. Reunida estas condiciones para la acumulación de petróleo, hay posibilidades de que la zona a explorar contenga algún yacimiento petrolífero. Sin embargo, existen casos donde se hay una superposición de estratos a manera de reservorio que ocultan la posibilidad de un yacimiento, como es el caso del desierto de Sechura o la montaña del Perú. En estos casos, se emplea los métodos geofísicos de prospección que verifican el indicio de las condiciones estructurales del subsuelo. Entre los distintos métodos utilizados, tenemos a los gravimétricos, basados en la medición de variaciones de la atracción de la gravedad sobre la superficie de la tierra; los métodos magnéticos, que miden las variaciones del campo magnético terrestre, generados por las propiedades magnéticas anómalas del subsuelo; los métodos sísmicos que son los más usados dado que informan de forma precisa sobre la condición geológica del subsuelo, y los métodos eléctricos, que son los menos usados puesto que otorgan datos superficiales sobre las condiciones geológicas del subsuelo. Finalmente, para el costo de exploración del petróleo se tiene que equilibrar los siguientes factores: los métodos de prospección, costo de materiales y equipo, sueldos del personal, número de puntos de observación, facilidades de transporte y las clases de terreno y clima.
