Open-source technology for supporting the Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviewed the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study using open-source hardware and software for the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for non-metallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health issues. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device. An open-source software, MIT App Inventor, was used for developing an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a non-metallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in both mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors still exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. The US mining industry today is fighting for its existence. We are plagued by the shortage of materials, of equipment, of fuels, of capital, of manpower. If we solve those shortages, we are then frustrated in our attempts to open a new mine or, perish the thought, a new smelter. If we manage to make a profit, demagogues will accuse us of stealing from consumers; and, if we do not make a profit and have to shut down, the same demagogues will accuse us of creating unemployment. Meanwhile, in every aspect of our business - from research, exploration and development, to production, marketing and selling - we are hindered in every way by the bipartisan mismanagement and crippling controls of a government bureaucracy gone amok. We are fighting a war on every front. Some of you realize that ours is a war of ideas. In order to win, our industry must make its ideas heard. But to be heard, we must have something to say - which means: we must know our case logically and consistently, all the way down to essential principles. A principle is a primary truth applicable to a great number of instances. A principle is like a road map: it shows you all the possible alternatives for getting from where you are to where you want to go. Although practically everybody recognizes the usefulness of a map and the need to consult it to find the best way' to get from one city to another, most people are not as careful in charting the course of their life, or the course of their industry, or the course of their nation. And so they act blindly, at random, by the whim of the moment, and get nowhere fast.

A escória de aciaria LD é um coproduto abudantemente gerado através da metalurgia primária e secundária, sendo que após seu resfriamento e beneficiamento pode ser aplicado em diversos setores, mas que necessita ser submetido a processo de envelhecimento para minimização da expansão. Em geral, no Brasil, o Método PTM-130/78 é o mais utilizado para avaliar o potencial de expansão, entretanto o método leva 14 dias para obtenção dos resultados. Por meio de uma cooperação técnico-econômica entre a CSN e a EEL-USP, o método de expansão foi correlacionado com as fases identificadas e quantificadas por Difratometria de Raios-X e Método de Rietveld, respectivamente, além de compreender o mecanismo de expansão. Análises de regressão múltipla permitiram ajustar modelos matemáticos com 97,0% de ajuste e uma redução no tempo de ensaio de 14 dias (336 horas) para 7 horas.

El presente texto describe las ventajas del uso del sistema de vectores aplicados en la explotación de los minerales de la mina de Atacocha. Este sistema consiste en dividir el Ore Body a explotarse, en varias partes y que al momento de hacerlo sea de forma alternada, como si se tratase de "Stopes" independientes. Entre las ventajas obtenidas por este sistema, está que el desarrollo de derrumbes se hace menos frecuente debido a que las paralizaciones -ya sea por los derrames de minerales de las cajas de Ore Bodyi -, no delimitan un detenimiento total del área de explotación, sino solo a un sector. Otra ventaja estriba en que el costo por toneladas de todos los stopes trabajados, es menor que el sistema de cuadros empleado. Asimismo, para que el sistema sea completamente efecivo, se deben conocer los límites del Ore Body, a través de los análisis y las muestras de laboratorio permanente.

Puesto que el deslizamiento de relaves constituye uno de los principales riesgos para la vida y seguridad de los embalses, se desarrolló un programa que rehabilite los depósitos de los relaves a través de los gaviones y geomallas como elementos que estabilizan los relaves descargados. En este sentido, el uso de geosintéticos revolucionó el diseño de los relaves y sistema productivos y permitió un mejor manejo ambiental de los relaves. Asimismo, la utilización de gaviones como paramento externo en el sistema suelo armado, otorga mayor rigidez al mismo en el caso de paredes, taludes más verticales, drenaje y protección contra la erosión. En consecuencia, el uso de gaviones y geomallas es aplicable para la construcción de depósitos de relave y estabilización de depósitos inactivos.

The end of an era is here. The pony-express era of industrial relations in the coal industry is ending. Those professionals who know it must end to insure the industry's future are happy, relieved, but somewhat saddened. They are sad because it did have its elements of suspense, thrills, frustrations, and at times, plain fun. The days of the Company town are ended; the wildcats are declining; violence (while a big part of today's industrial relations) is beginning-to decline. The spirit of sound industrial relations is beginning to take hold. This has to happen for the industry to compete in today's economy and it is causing major changes for those who have grown accustomed to the pony-express type industrial relations.

Neste trabalho foi avaliado o comportamento de propagação de trinca por fadiga de cinco aços utilizados na fabricação de trilhos empregados na construção e manutenção de vias permanentes brasileiras, por meio da realização de ensaios de propagação de trinca por fadiga (da/dN x ?K), utilizando-se a razão de tensões de carregamento R = 0,7 e comparação com os resultados obtidos com R = 0,1. Vários modelos de previsão do comportamento em fadiga foram avaliados. Observou-se a influência de R nos valores mais próximos ao limiar ?KTH, com diminuição considerável no valor de ?KTH para R = 0,7. Dentre os modelos matemáticos usados no ajuste das curvas sigmoidais da/dN x ?K, o que forneceu melhor ajuste foi o ajuste de Hartman e Schijve. O parâmetro K? proposto por Kujawski reduziu os efeitos de R na tentativa de unificar os dados em uma única e estreita banda de dispersão, porém, na Região I da curva, os dados ainda ficaram bastante dispersos.

Dado que los trabajos de procesamiento metalúrgico de la mina Uchucchahua, ocasionaron impactos en el medio ambiente, afectando la calidad del agua y eliminando la vida acuática en las lagunas Añilcocha, Colquicocha y Tinquicocha, se procedió a encontrar una alternativa de tratamiento biológico que recupere la calidad de vida en la mina Uchucchacua. En este sentido, el presente trabajo describe el tratamiento pasivo de los efluentes con manganeso de la mina Uchucchacua. Para dicho procedimiento, se desarrollaron trabajos en dos etapas: el de laboratorio y balde. El primero comprende los sistemas de tratamiento pasivo anaeróbico y aeróbico.El aeróbico se inició sobre la base de los procesos de filtración y aireación a fin de determinar el grado de oxidación y precipitación del manganeso como óxido, mientras que el segundo se realizó en función a los resultados obtenidos en la etapa laboratorio y comprende los siguientes procesos: filtración, autooxidación, aireación, sedimentación. En consecuencia, los procesos anaeróbicos no favorecen la reducción de Mn II en los efluentes estudiados, mientras que los procesos aeróbicos permitieron la disminución del manganeso.

Este estudio se basa en el análisis de onda elemental para determinar los tiempos de retardo que reduzcan al máximo el PPV en las comunidades (campo lejano). Inicia con la toma de datos con equipos de medición de vibraciones (sismógrafo Instantel Plus) con lo cual obtenemos el registro de un taladro de producción; el que será analizado para determinar una relación de PPV versus tiempo de retardo. Con los retardos obtenidos del análisis de onda elemental, se programan los siguientes disparos y se toman los registros de vibraciones en la zona donde se quiere medir los niveles de PPV. Los proyectos de voladura que servirán para hacer el comparativo y determinar la efectividad de esta metodología, serán los proyectos de producción cargados con mezcla explosiva gasificada; tomando como referencia los disparos desde 2018 en adelante.

The early history of the mine is traced from the beginning of shaft sinking in 1886 to the purchase by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. in 1949. A necessary preliminary to mechanisation of the Borehole Seam was development of the Young Wallsend seam, andthis development is described. Surface reorganisation and coal handling arrangements are dealt with in detail. Then follows a description of the Borehole Seam mechanisation, the provision of power supply for this purpose, arid pumping arrangements in themine.INTRODUCTIONStockton Borehole Colliery is in the Parish of Teralba, between the townships of Teralba and Boolaroo, and about 12 miles from Newcastle. The colliery holding, a freehofd area of 2,560 acres, was apparently an original land grant when acquired by Teralba Co-operative Coal Company who decided to mine for coal and named the mine "Teralba Colliery." Shaft sinking was commenced in 1886 but was delayed by financial and water troubles to such an extent that it was not until 1901 that the Borehole Seam was reached.Coal was won until 1904 using a single 16 ft. diameter shaft, ventilation being achieved by means of a wooden boxing down one side of the shaft. This collapsed, and operations ceased until the mine was taken over in 1906 by a company known as "Borehole Colliery Limited," the principal stockholder being the Stockton Coal Company. It renamed the mine "Borehole Colliery." This new company immediately commenced sinking a 13 ft. diameter air shaft. In 1908 the Stocktol1 Colliery at Stockton was abandoned, and during the following year much of its equipment was transferred to Borehole Colliery. Be-fore proceeding further, it is important to clarify the meaning of some fundamental terms used frequently in the text. 6.0.1.1 Mine Valuation vs. Evaluation The words "valuation" and "evaluation" in a mining context are often used interchangeably. However, for the purposes of this section, a distinction is made between the two terms in accordance with commonly accepted practice. The word valuation in a mining project context has the rather narrow meaning of placing a dollar or other currency value on the worth of the project as a whole. In other words, the value of a mining project refers to a measure of the desirability of ownership of that property. As such, the major item of interest is, "what is the mine worth?," or `what is the value of the mine?" The value of a mining project may actually be determined in the marketplace at any specific point in time, or it may be estimated by one of several methods. Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. The complexity of commercial mining software has gained rapidly over the past decade as hardware developments have surpassed software capabilities at a staggering rate. Software users, recognizing the limitations of off-the-shelf applications, have adapted embedded scripting languages. Custom programming has always had a vital role in mine computing innovations, yielding a dynamic research environment in industry and academia. Fields such as industrial minerals can benefit from customization of existing software, since the majority of mine planning software was designed for large metal mines. Different customization approaches utilizing embedded scripting languages are presented, with examples of sand and gravel applications in development. Following implementation by Surpac and development of the Surpac Command Language, Tcl has been widely applied. Mintec introduced Python, also extensible and portable amongst various operating systems, for use in their MineSight products. In early 2000, Gemcom introduced the use of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, widely used customization tools for a decade. Datamine implemented a flexible multi-language approach, with all program commands and processes available through the COM Server Interface. This extends customization from the existing macro language to scripting in HTML, JavaScript, or any language that supports COM.

Measurement of gamma radiation occurring in nature to characterize geological formations has been widely recognized in mineral exploration. Different methods and apparatuses have been developed for drill hole logging purposes. Geological formations vary in amount of naturally emitted gamma radiation. A gamma signature from a geological formation is captured by utilizing different types of gamma detectors. A natural gamma radiation detector (NGRD) can be used to control mining whenever there is a significant difference between the radiation levels in the mineral or ore being mined and the waste materials surrounding the ore. Surface miners, such as the one shown in Figure 1, can precisely control the elevation of the cutter as the machine moves over the surface of the formation. This type of machine is predominantly used in selective mining operations, e.g. surface coal mining. If there is a means to know the position of the cutter relative to the interface between the ore and waste, the miner can recover all or most all of the valuable mineral with very little out-of-seam dilution. This paper discusses the results of a successful application of gamma detectors to control a surface miner at one of North American Coal Corporations? locations - Red Hills Mine. The mine has nine coal seams in total with thicknesses ranging from 12? to 60?. The bottom six seams (Figure 2) are minable. The mine has complex geology and a significant amount of annual rainfall (4.7 ft). The mine produces approximately 3.5 million tons of coal and about 40 bcy of overburden per year. The operation utilizes diverse mining equipment including Dragline Marion 8200, electric shovel P&H 2800, Caterpillar end dump trucks CAT 785 and 789; bulldozers CAT D11, D10, D8, and D6. Coal is mainly extracted by utilizing a Wirtgen SM 4200 surface miner that is loading CAT 785 trucks with high volume coal bodies and payload of 150 t. Operational cutting depth is 24 inches with maximum cutting depth of 36 inches. Surface miner operators determine a cutting depth based on multiple cues, the most important being visual observations of a coal seam being cleaned or mined. The cleaning process involves removal of the last foot of waste material covering the coal seam. This is one of two critical phases in the coal extraction process. If, during the cleaning process, an operator sets a cutting head too deep, valuable product is wasted. If it is set too shallow, waste material is left to be mined with the coal. The second critical phase occurs in the last cut on the interface between the coal and waste material at the bottom of the coal seam. If the cutting head goes deeper than favorable, then waste material is delivered to a power plant.
