This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.

Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity - up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonne of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle-particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter-current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in North America and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.

Surface mining activities disturb large tracts of land resulting in the potential for greatly increased downstream sediment loads. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 places increased emphasis on the protection of the environment from the adverse effects of surface mining operations. Surface mining activities must be planned to minimize disturbance to the hydrologic balance, erosion and sediment contributions to receiving streams. Sediment ponds must provide a sediment storage volume equal to the accumulated sediment volume from the drainage area as determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or other empirical methods established by the regulatory authority. It has thus become extremely important for the mining industry to secure more accurate estimates of potential erosion losses and sediment yield. Accurate estimates of sediment yield are required for the planning, design and successful operation of sediment control systems such as detention ponds and other alternative control structures and for evaluating the effectiveness of land management practices. The principal soil loss prediction procedure available for use is the LISLE. The USLE procedure is inadequate for use in predicting soil loss from surface mine regions for a number of reasons. These include: 1. The USLE was developed to estimate average average annual loss from agricultural soils. It cannot predict accurately soil loss for specific storm events. In surface mine regions a major portion of the soil loss occurs during the initial six months to one year of active mining. Accurate estimates of soil loss over short periods are thus required for the design of control structures. 2. The train haulage system being designed for PT Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) will be located within the mine at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level on the west side of the island of Papua, Indonesia. The developing block cave is beneath the active Grasberg Open Pit and will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing plants. The design entails 28 km of rail and 119 ore chutes, which will be brought online over the course of ten years.The train haulage system will be driverless and fully automated. Sequentially, the system includes remote controlled rock breakers at the top of the chute grizzlies, followed by remote controlled chute loading of the trains, then autonomous train haulage and autonomous unloading. An overhead catenary system (OCS) will power the locomotives, which are equipped with on-board batteries to drive through the loading and unloading sections. Service locomotives with drivers move material-laden freight cars in and out of the service shaft, destined for workshops, the magazine and batch plants. Service locomotives are also used for haulage level maintenance. Highly reliable and redundant control and communications systems are required to manage 12 trains in simultaneous operation.This paper provides an overview of the train haulage system’s technical complexities and the associated support systems interactions. Abstract Spectrographic methods for the analysis of minor constituents such as platinum-group metals, gold, silver, and silica in palladium and platinum refinery sponge are described. These involve the conversion of the sponge metals to the black form by reduction with high purity aluminum filings in either acid or alkaline media. Standards of known composition are prepared in the same manner from either refinery or spectrographically standardized sponge metals. Samples of the black metals are mounted in pellet form and a multisource spark discharge used for excitation. The range of concentrations of impurities studied are those common to refinery samples. Excellent reproducibility of intensity ratios using major constituents as internal standards, is demonstrated and two methods have noted by which the accuracy of the procedures are shown to be of the order of 3 per cent, on the basis of synthetic preparations. Introduction During the past two years an investigation has been carried out in the Spectrographic Laboratory, Queen&apos;s University, to determine the suitability of modern spectrographic techniques for the precise analysis of the platinum-group metals palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium in the form of refinery sponge analyzing about 99 per cent of the major constituent.

"IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited&apos;s Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company&apos;s Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

Um exemplo é a melhor relação entre resistência mecânica e tenacidade. Propriedades como dureza a quente e tenacidade à fratura são de extrema relevância para a análise de compósitos cerâmicos destinados a aplicações termomecânicas. No entanto, para determiná-las com confiabilidade há a necessidade de uma superfície rigorosamente preparada. Tal preparação torna-se extremamente dispendiosa pelas técnicas metalográficas convencionais. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo registrar uma rota de preparação que viabilize uma superfície livre de irregularidades e resquícios oriundos do processo de sinterização. Possibilitando, desta forma, a realização de ensaios de dureza Vickers e tenacidade à fratura com maior confiabilidade, e ainda, uma análise microestrutural que revele características da matriz e fase dispersa presentes no compósito.

The monocarbide region of the ternary system U-C-O has been investigated at 1,700° C as the first phase of a more extensive study of a portion of the four-component system U-C-O-N. An area bounded by the following compositional limits in atomic percent was studied: U, 44 to 55; C, 30 to 60; 0, 0.2 to 20. Compacts composed of mixtures of uranium, graphite, and uranium dioxide powders were sintered at 1,700° C under an equilibrium pressure of carbon monoxide to produce uranium oxycarbide specimens having a variety of compositions. Sintered specimens were evaluated by X-ray, chemical analysis, and ceramographic techniques. Solid-solution boundaries and phase relations have been established, and the effects of composition on the lattice parameter as well as the decomposition pressure have been investigated. Oxygen can be substituted for carbon in stoichiometric uranium monocarbide to the extent of about 17 atomic percent at 1,700° C. The composition range of the oxycarbide solid solution extends from about 48 to 51 atomic percent uranium in the low oxygen region. Above 10 atomic percent oxygen the composition range narrows to less than 1 atomic percent uranium. Carbon monoxide exists as a gaseous phase in equilibrium with all compositions which contain oxygen. Five separate phase fields were found bounding the solid-solution area. Other phases within this portion of the system include uranium, uranium dioxide, uranium dicarbide, and uranium sesquicarbide. Decomposition pressures of oxycarbide compositions at 1,700° C have been found to vary from a few microns for stoichiometric and uranium-rich compositions to 35 torr for carbon-oxygen-rich specimens. Lattice parameters were found to depend upon the U to C + 0 ratio as well upon the extent of substitution of oxygen into the stoichiometric monocarbide lattice.

El estudio se inicia con el analizador portátil de fluorescencia de rayos X (XRF) calibrado por el fabricante; luego se realiza pruebas con muestras del yacimiento en diferentes tiempos, lo cual permitió elegir un tiempo entre 20 y 45 segundos para Endoskarn y Exoskarn, con mejores resultados de Ti y Zr. La investigación permitió identificar dos elementos, Ti y Zr, cuya baja movilidad durante la alteración hidrotermal y formación de calcosilicatos les permite jugar el rol de discriminantes geoquímicos.

An equation developed for gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 0.73 percent when applied to 264 natural gas and condensate systems including 2,043 PVT points. Another equation developed for liquid hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 1.12 percent when applied to 346 crude oil systems including 1,759 PVT points. Both equations require composition of the mixture to be expressed as mole fraction of methane through heptanes-plus, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, together with the characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction in addition to the temperature and pressure. The equations cover wide ranges of the variables involved, and their accuracy is considerably better than that of other available methods. The equations were differentiated to allow calculation of the coefficients of isothermal compressibility and isobaric thermal expansion. (In this paper the coefficient of isothermal com-pressibility and the coefficient of isobaric thermal expansion will be expressed as compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient, respectively.) Equations to calculate these quantities are presented. INTRODUCTION Calculations of reservoir performance for petroleum reservoirs require accurate knowledge of the volumetric behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, both liquid and gaseous. Compressibilities are required in transient fluid flow problems, and thermal expansion coefficients are important in thermal methods of production. An accurate laboratory investigation of the PVT behavior of each reservoir fluid encountered would be costly and time consuming. For this reason various correlations for predicting fluid properties have been developed and recorded in recent literature. Correlations have been presented in the form of graphs, tables and equations. Since an increasing number of studies are being conducted with the aid of electronic computers, recent efforts have been directed toward development of correla-tions suitable for computer programming. Application of computers permits the use of more complex correlations which otherwise are not feasible. Moreover, methods for predicting reservoir performance, particularly those based on the compositional material balance, depend upon the capability of accurately expressing the molal volumes and other fluid properties as functions of pressure, temperature and composition. Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels). "It is widely accepted that the type of grinding media has an impact on the grinding chemistry and subsequent flotation behaviour of the sulphide minerals being separated. There are countless laboratory investigations demonstrating that inert grinding media produces more oxidising pulp potentials, reduced levels of grinding media corrosion products and superior concentrate grades and valuable metal recoveries. However, taking these results to industrial scale has proven difficult.Work conducted at the Ernest Henry Mine, in north western Queensland, Australia, at laboratory and pilot plant scale clearly indicated that using a high chrome grinding media resulted in significant improvements in both copper and gold recoveries. However, advancing this work to plant trial represented considerable financial and technical risk to the mine.This paper provides details of the protocol developed and used during the high chrome grinding media plant trial. It describes the test regime employed to measure changes in pulp chemistry, and the statistical methodology utilised to interpret the results. The work also highlighted the need for close cooperation between the metallurgists on site and the researchers conducting the trial.To date, the trial has produced excellent results: indicating that the copper recovery has improved by about 2 percent. The successful application of high chrome grinding media to the Ernest Henry ore has increased metal value by $18.7 million USD per annum based on current spot price for copper.INTRODUCTIONTheoryThe application of electrochemically inert grinding media to mineral systems has been extensively studied (Table 1). El sistema de análisis ha estado en operación en cinco de las plantas concentradoras de la compañía por un tiempo suficientemente largo para realizar un análisis adecuado de los beneficios logrados en el control de los procesos de concentración. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el analizador en flujo Courier 300 y su experiencia en plantas concentradoras. El primer sistema analizador fue instalado en la mina de Pyhasalmi a fines de 1967 y se divide cuatro grupos funcionales: equipo o sistema de muestre, analizador, equipo de salida y equipo auxiliar. Posteriormente se instalaron cinco sistemas analizadores Courier ( Kereti, Pyhasalmi, Vihanti, Vuonos, Kotalahti), donde se lograron mejoras considerables en el control y economía de las plantas concentradoras. Por ello, el conocimiento inmediato de los cambios en el proceso y la posibilidad de corrección rápida han permitido obtener una producción más uniforme y mayor capacidad de recuperación.

Electric-pulse disintegration is a mineral separation technique that liberates all mineral grains from any igneous or metamorphic rock irrespective of its lithology or grain-size distribution. The normal mechanical crushing of whole-rock samples is replaced by the rending effect of an explosion, produced by applying an electric current from a high-voltage power source. A voltage greater than the 100 kV necessary for the electrical breakdown of rock samples is achieved by using capacitors charged in parallel, but discharged in series. The sample sits in a water bath and the rapid distribution of electric pulses leads to an explosion which occurs preferentially along grain boundaries of the sample. Individual, undamaged mineral grains can be recovered in their original shape and form regardless of grain size. Examples are given of the liberation and concentration of important accessory minerals from different rock types. The examples show the recovery of diamond from two types of non-kimberlitic host rock in Popigai and Kumdykol in Kazakhstan and platinum group minerals associated with chromitites from the Konjdor intrusion and sulphides from intrusions in the Kola Peninsula in Russia

The zinc-lead lode at Rosebery, on the West coast of Tasmania, has a total length of over 4000 ft. It consists of five elongated lenses parallel to the foliation planes of the quartz sericite schist, and is situated at the junction of the quartz sericite schist and a thin belt of slate. The lenses consist of massive, fine grained sulphide ore, with small amounts of quartz, barite, sericite and chlorite, and they terminate in masses of low grade ore. The gangue minerals increase in quantity in the low grade ore which includes small quantities of the manganese garnet, spessartite. The schist walls of the lenses are in places impregnated with lode minerals to a degree sufficient to permit them to be regarded as economic ore.The ore-bodies have developed from incoming mineral solutions by the replacement of the quartz sericite schist and are localised where the ore solutions have been confined by a relatively impervious slate band. The early stages of replacement of the schists are signified by the development of pyritic bands which are succeeded by a strong development of zinc blende. With ptogressive crystallisation, the character of the mineral solutions gradually changed and the development of galena, and its associated bournonite, became more important in the later stages.Remnants of the replaced schist, in the form of isolated wisps and schlieren of sericite and chlorite, are present in the ore body, more noticeably in the pyritic specimens. An important feature of the ore is the association of small ogllantities of gold with trahedrite.

The cable shovel excavator is used for primary production in many surface mining operations. A major problem in shovel excavation is the variability of material diggability, resulting in varying mechanical energy input and stress loading of shovel dipper-and-tooth assembly across the working bench. This variability has a huge impact on the shovel dipper and tooth assembly in hard formations. In addition, the geometrical constraints within the working environment impose production limitations resulting in low production efficiency and high operating costs. A potential solution to the above problems is the application of an intelligent cable shovel excavation(ICSE) technology. In this paper, dynamic models of the cable shovel excavator are developed with numerical examples. These models form the basis for developing dynamic shovel simulators for an intelligent shovel excavation technology. The dynamic equations are developed using the Newton-Euler techniques. The path trajectories for efficient excavation, dynamic velocity and acceleration profiles, and dimensioned parameters for optimum feed force, torques and momentum of shovel boom-bucket assembly are modeled and used for efficient excavation. The optimum digging forces and resistances for the cable shovel excavator are modeled and used to predict optimum excavation performance.

En ese sentido, también se incrementó el número de universidades que ofrecen carreras profesionales en la minería, sin priorizar la calidad de su enseñanza. Por ello, el presente trabajo señala la gestión de la educación superior en la carrera de Ingeniería de Minas, donde se garantice que los profesionales egresados respondan a las exigencias del mundo moderno en términos técnicos, de gestión y de valores éticos. Asímismo, la acreditación de las facultades de Ingeniería de Minas existentes permitirá la reforma del sistema obsoleto de educación actual, y la difusión de la investigación a través del programa de Concytec, complementará la calidad, como la concertación de la disciplina misma.

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration of gas into the underground workplace. One common technique to control methane emissions in longwall mines is to drill vertical gob gas vent holes into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to optimize the well parameters, e.g., the borehole diameter, and the length and position of the slotted casing interval relative to the fractured gas-bearing zones. This paper presents the development and results of a comprehensive, "dynamic," three-dimensional reservoir model of a typical multipanel Pittsburgh coalbed longwall mine. The alteration of permeability fields in and above the panels as a result of the mining- induced disturbances has been estimated from mechanical modeling of the overlying rock mass. Model calibration was performed through history matching the gas production from gob gas ventholes in the study area. Results presented in this paper include a simulation of gas flow patterns from the gas-bearing zones in the overlying strata to the mine environment, as well as the influence of completion practices on optimizing gas production from gob gas ventholes.

Neste trabalho foram estudados os efeitos da laminação a frio com baixo percentual de redução e a cinética de recristalização em um aço médio carbono e alto manganês. O aço em estudo foi laminado a frio com percentual de redução de 10%, seguido de um tratamento térmico de recozimento nas temperaturas de 650 e 700°C, em tempos de 10, 15, 20, 25 e 30 minutos. A caracterização microestrutural e avaliação da fração recristalizada foram avaliadas por microscopia óptica e a dureza Vickers (avaliada em um macrodurômetro e um microdurômetro). De acordo com os resultados pode-se observar um efeito combinado de recristalização e crescimento de grão em função da microestrutura parcialmente encruada pelo baixo percentual de redução imposto, que se acentua com aumento do tempo e da temperatura de encharque.

Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand&apos;s enterprise economy. &nbsp; Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors. &nbsp; In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.
