This paper presents observations on the installation of drilled shafts from two construction projects and an academic study with experimental and analytical parts. The construction projects involved the use of pressurized drilling methods. The experimental part of the academic study involved the use of the auger drilling method. The analytical part of the academic study investigated the effect of drilling methods on the soil-structure interaction and the behavior of drilled shafts under lateral loads. The concept of ?free-length? is introduced for the lateral load design of pressure-drilled shafts that are thought to be fully embedded within a soil media. The academic part of the study presented herein was conducted in Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

"INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. Konkola No 3 shaft experienced severe mining-induced stress and time-related deterioration in ground conditions in an area where an over-cut and bench (OCB) mining method was used to extract a shallow dipping wide orebody. This caused an unacceptable risk for safe mining operations to sustain the required levels of production. After a review of the conditions it was decided to change the mining method to CASCADE to recover ore in the affected area and modify the OCB method and use a modified over-cut and bench method (MOCB) for new mining sections. This paper describes the geotechnical criteria included to derive the mining standards for the MOCB. The geotechnical risks are identified and taken into account to develop stope design parameters, stoping sequences and support requirements. A monitoring programme to assess conditions as mining progresses is also discussed.

Criteria have been fully developed for determining the optimum size of oil and gas well blocks. The criteria lead to the formation of well barrier pillars which are, of themselves, inherently stable and take account of variable mine roof and floor conditions. The criteria ensure, through considerations of ground movement, that strains transmitted to well casings, are within tolerable limits of casing specifications. The criteria cater for well barrier pillars in multi-seam mining situations and where previous old mining has taken place. The criteria maintain flexibility in being adaptable to local mine design situations. The criteria are applicable to proposed extraction thicknesses up to 15 feet at depths up to 2,400 feet. The criteria are related to producing wells and to abandoned wells. In the latter connection, various states of well abandonment are recognised.

Frontier/Traylor Joint Venture is presently constructing a section of the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon's (TRI-MET) Westside Light Rail system. This new section will extend Portland's existing transit system to the western suburbs of Beaverton and Hillsboro. The drill-blast excavations at this project include 10,000 feet of 20 foot tunnel, 18 cross passages, three shafts, an underground railway station, and a U-wall open cut. From a blast designer's perspective, this job has been extremely challenging. Blast vibration is limited to 0.5 ips at 200 feet or at the nearest structure, and airblast is limited to 129 dB -- linear peak and 96 dB -- C scale. The tunnels pass under heavily built up areas and have top of tunnel to surface cover distances as low as 70 feet. Surface blasting in the 26,000 cubic yard U-wall excavation was limited to five short nighttime periods due to its proximity to the very busy highway 26.

"Rock properties have a material impact on mining processes, including drilling performance. An investigation using point loaded index (PLI) data converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) has revealed that a direct relationship between grain size and UCS exists at Mogalakwena Mine. This correlation is best seen in unaltered rock, with lower correlations for altered rock types. Measurements from the new RockMa system installed on drill rigs can be used to obtain rock strength data to validate the current rock strength domains and create additional data for the next benches below. An investigation of penetration rates in different lithologies shows that rock composition plays an important role in determining drill performance. Additionally, there is an inverse relationship between rock strength and drilling penetration rate – a measure of how efficiently a hole is drilled.The domaining of grain-size-adjusted UCS at Mogalakwena Mine will allow more accurate scheduling of drill rigs through increased knowledge of rock strength in various areas. Successful rock strength domaining has the potential to be incorporated into blast indexing and predicting crushing/milling performance.IntroductionThe optimization of mining and processing through geometallurgical characterization of ore are key drivers of value realization (Deutch, 2013). Rock strength is one such property and is affected by, among other variables, composition, texture, and grain size (Ozturk, Nasuf, and Kahraman, 2014). Mogalakwena Mine is exploiting the intrusive Platreef PGE (platinum group element)-bearing orebody which forms part of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This complex orebody exhibits areas of metasomatic alteration, metamorphism, and sporadic mineralization of the footwall and hangingwall (Nex et al., 2006). Understanding this variability is paramount due to the implications for rock strength and hardness, which in turn affect crushing, milling, and liberation efficiency. These variables must be known prior to blasting in order to optimize mine and plant processes using in-situ variables. This necessitates predictive modelling (Deutch, 2013). Geological and geotechnical data was sourced from the Overysel (OY) exploration database for the study. Point load testing was done for each borehole and the results converted to uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) (Akram and Bakar, 2007). The relationship of lithology, texture, and grain size with UCS revealed an inverse relationship between grain size and UCS in unaltered rock. The relationship was not present in altered rock types. A comparison of mean strength and hardness results indicated that Bond work index and UCS may be related. Drilling performance is affected by UCS (Bourgoyne et al., 1986), and this was proven using recent measurements obtained during drilling. Lastly, grain-sizeadjusted UCS values were applied to a 3D model for the OY property."

The Dike and Eaton veins in Crittenden County, Ky. (fig. 1), are along northwesterly trending relief fractures that lie between two northeastward striking major faults - the Moore Hill and- the Levias, in Crittenden County, Ky. The veins contain small, narrow, irregular ore bodies of fluorspar with subordinate quantities of sphalerite and galena. Gravel fluorspar was found on the surface in the Eaton vein, and open-cut mining was in progress on the W. M. Conyer property about 1900. Discovery of fluorspar in the Dike vein came much later, about 1933, on the W. H. LaRue tract, but the principal production on the Dike vein started after the discovery of gravel spar in 1938 on the land of the P. J. Gilless estate. Production from the Eaton vein was estimated at 9,400 tons and that from the Dike vein at 15,700 tons, a total of 25,100 tons. A large part of this production was gravel fluorspar from within 50 foot of the surface. Beneath the gravel spar the veins are very narrow, averaging 2 to 2.5 feet in width, and the ore shoots are small. The deepest mine level was 140 feet below the surface, and the deepest shaft 150 foot. Orb was concentrated by log washer or sent unwashed to custom mills at Marion, Ky. about 6 miles distant.

Após uma série de estudos, utilizando a metodologia Seis Sigma, identificou-se oportunidades de melhorias operacionais que trariam mais eficiência, estabilidade operacional e consequente aumento na produção de coque e vapor, tais como: maior controle na admissão de ar, controle das perdas de coque e carvão, vedação dos fornos de coque e execução de paradas programadas específicas para Preservação Refratária, com foco na redução do back log e consequente prolongamento da vida útil das baterias de fornos de coque. A redução Burn Loss aumenta o rendimento coque/ carvão, com consequente redução do consumo específico de carvão e aumento na produção de coque e vapor. A implantação desse projeto permitiu a redução de 2,5 dólares por tonelada de aço produzida no Fiscal Year 16/17.

A liga de alumínio AA 7075 recebida no estado T6 (conformada e envelhecida artificialmente) sofreu tratamento térmico a 300°C com o objetivo de causar o engrossamento das partículas de MgZn2, intermetálico responsável pelo endurecimento do material. As amostras foram então deformadas 45% em redução de espessura por laminação e recozidas isotermicamente a 200°C e a 250°C por tempos variados para estudar a cinética de amolecimento por meio de medidas de dureza Vickers. Os resultados indicam que a cinética de amolecimento em ambas as temperaturas de recozimento aproxima-se do comportamento previsto pelo modelo Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) com boa concordância (coeficientes de correlação de 0,9725 e 0,9140 a 200°C e a 250°C, respectivamente), ainda que as micrografias ópticas da amostra recozida a 300°C por 4 horas não evidenciem a ocorrência de recristalização.

"In the course of its investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety the Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in investigating all promising materials that may be of value in rendering methane or other combustible gases, vapors, or solids less inflammable.Added substances are of value if such additions narrow the limits of inflammability, raise the ignition temperature, lower the speed of propagation of flame, or reduce the maximum pressure developed. Of major importance is the effect of added materials on the limits of inflammability, because methane is the chief combustible s liberated in mines, considerable work has been done with extinguishing agents on methane flames. For obvious reasons, a substance to be of value for the extinction flames should be a gas, or a liquid having a sufficient vapor pressure to give concentrations of the vapor in sufficient amounts to extinguish the flames or markedly narrow the limits of inflammability. The substance should be nontoxic, cheap, and noncorrosive and must be incombustible. Solids, such as rock dust, are undesirable and of little value for combustible gases because they soon settle out of the atmosphere, and their flame- extinguishing value is thereby lost. There are at present only a few gases and vapors-for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon tetrachloride-which meet these requirements.The extinction of methane flames by nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon has been reported by Coward and Hartwell 4; the extinction by water vapor by Coward and Gleadell 5, and the extinction by helium and carbon tetrachloride by Coward and Jones 6."

O Alto Forno 01 da ThyssenKrupp CSA entrou em operação em 12/07/2010 dando inicio a uma etapa em que o Brasil recebeu sua mais recente usina integrada, sendo um marco no modelo de planta compacta com o nível de capacidade instalada de 5 milhões ton/ano de placas. O modelo de controle de fluxo gasoso centralizado e com baixa marcha periférica havia se mostrado não adequado. Desse modo, foi implementado um monitoramento de indicadores para auxiliar na avaliação e controle de nível térmico e de distribuição de gás. Logrou-se obter uma estabilização da marcha do Alto Forno resultando em um melhor desempenho nas condições de escoamento, melhor rendimento de gás e, por consequência, redução do Fuel Rate, além de uma otimização no custo de carga metálica. Este trabalho mostra o desenvolvimento das práticas operacionais e de controle que permitiram essa evolução nos resultados.

Descrevem-se as ações adotadas para a evolução da qualidade de aços ultra baixo carbono com alto teor de silício, destinados a aplicações eletrônicas. Com o propósito de conhecer o comportamento metalúrgico do material durante o processo de laminação foram realizados ensaios de dilatometria, que permitiram a determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fase. Foi evidenciado que, nas temperaturas de processo praticadas, a laminação no trem acabador ocorria na região intercrítica, gerando variações bruscas de propriedades mecânicas no processo, levando a instabilidade operacional. Esta condição de laminação foi corrigida, direcionando para laminação em fase ferrítica. Foram necessários ajustes no modo de operação na linha de tiras a quente e a criação de controle automático de temperatura na entrada do trem acabador. Após as ações foi possível melhorar a qualidade do produto final, em relação às dimensões e forma do produto, reduzindo as perdas internas e retrabalho.

"This study provides calibration of resistance factors (?) for design of driven piles to implement Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for bridge foundations using Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) Test data. The basic research approach was to compile a database of published full-scale load tests including projects from the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) historical archive and projects from neighboring state DOTs. Load test results from neighboring states were leveraged by performing new geotechnical borings with TCP tests at the project sites. The final dataset consisted of 30 load tests performed on precast square concrete piles, with pile widths ranging from 356 to 508 mm and penetration depths ranging from 5.2 to 25.5 m, driven in soils. Ultimate capacities for each load test were interpreted based on Davisson, 5%, and 10% settlement criteria. These measured ultimate capacities were compared against predicted capacities estimated from TCP blow count values (NTCP) and design charts following the procedures outlined in TxDOT’s Geotechnical Manual. From the comparisons, statistical parameters of the biases (??= measured capacity/predicted capacity) such as mean and coefficient of variation were obtained. Resistance factors (?) for LRFD were then determined using Monte-Carlo simulations for each ultimate capacity criteria with the target reliability indices of 2.33 and 3.00.INTRODUCTIONThe Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has used the Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) test since its development in the 1940s. The TCP test is an in-situ penetration test to characterize the materials encountered during geotechnical exploration. Texas currently maintains over 53,000 bridges in the National Bridge Inventory (FHWA 2016), and most of these bridges plus other transportation infrastructure in Texas are supported by foundations designed using the TCP test and its associated foundation design method. The Oklahoma DOT adopted the TCP test and foundation design approach in the 1970s, so the foundations for most of the 23,000 bridges in Oklahoma’s inventory were also designed using the TCP method. With this significant body of experience, the TCP method has been viewed as a straightforward, relatively easy-touse foundation design method that consistently yields safe, serviceable, economical, and maintainable foundations. TxDOT’s deep foundation design method is documented in the TxDOT Geotechnical Manual (TxDOT 2012) and currently employs the allowable stress design (ASD) approach. However, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has mandated that the states begin to implement the LRFD method in place of the older ASD approach (Densmore 2000). This paper presents resistance factors at ultimate limit state (ULS) for design of driven piles using the TCP test, resulting from efforts to be in compliance with the FHWA policy."

Statistical tables 6 to 12 give detailed information on injuries and employment at nonmetal mines. Data for nonmetal mines are presented separately from those for nonmetal mills, tables 23 29. The Bureau is authorized to send questionnaires to the nonmetal industry for their voluntary submission on of injury and employment experience at their operations. As this information contributes to the promotion of safety in the nonmetal mining industry, every effort has been made to make these questionnaires as complete as possible.

To deftne the capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. The splitter investigated was capable of applying combinations of radial and axial loads to rock when placed in a predrilled hole. Experiments conducted with the tool in concrete, limestone, and granite proved it capable of excavating all three materials. Break geometry in these three materials was the same, which encourages the prediction of performance in all rocks. The design of the radial-axial loading splitter's feather components significantly affected the tool's performance. It appears the design of this in-hole component should be tailored for the rock to be excavated.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Chem. Eng.) This paper describes the development and use of a process simulator to optimize gypsum recovery at Afmine, a small plant near Yzerfontein on the South African West Coast. The simulator consisted of models of the major plant equipment, viz. hydrocyclones, surge bins, settling tanks, a primary sieve and a dewatering screen. Experimental data suggested that the equipment could be modelled satisfactorily from data published in the open literature. Simulation studies have indicated that gypsum losses on the plant could be reduced substantially by means of some relatively minor modifications to the plant layout. Moreover, sensitivity analyses of the plant have indicated that optimization of the settling tanks should receive priority over the other process units.
