Although other energy commodities have developed successful futures contracts, long-term contracts still dominate the coal market. To establish whether coal markets will develop in the same way, coal price and volume data are tested against a set of criteria considered to represent some of the factors contributing to the development of a successful futures contract. Coal meets only some of the criteria: market players are subject to little risk in quite a stable market, have strong preferences for the specific nature of long-term contracts and profit from product uniqueness, each trade being individually negotiated. Potential structural changes in the western European market are not felt to be sufficient to create demand for a coal futures contract, but an empirical model has been developed that could form the basis of a further study to predict the potential for success

After the Sago and Darby No. 1 mine incidents, the new regulatory standards for the design of mine seals in underground coal mines of the United States require the mine seals to withstand higher explosion standards. This necessitated for the development of new design approaches and standards. For development of any new design standards or approaches a detailed understanding of effect of key influencing parameters on the stability of mine seal is a must. This paper attempts to address one of the factors, i.e. roof convergence, that play an important role in the stability of mine seal under explosion loading. Initially a couple of three dimensional numerical models were built and tested for different levels of roof convergence. These models confirmed that roof convergence has great influence on seal stability. A detailed study is undertaken, with some simple assumptions, to establish typical influence of roof convergence on the stability of mine seal under different levels of static explosion pressures. Three dimensional distinct element code 3DEC is used for this purpose.

William Kent, New York, N. Y.:—The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is an admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly gives the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Work of the Mechanical Engineer—Rock-drills, hoisting-machinery, tramming, pumping, ventilation, dredging, Sampling, concentration, briquetting, fume-recovery. Work of the Electrical Engineer—Electric machinery for hoisting, pumping, tramming, lighting and signaling, electric transmission, electric smelting. The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines throughout the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above these mines. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10% false-alarm rate, the expected probability o detecting a miner's signal" from a depth of 1000 ft is 54% at 500 ft it is 95%. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 and 50%, respectively, of United States coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at depth of 1000 ft, the probability of detection will improve approximately 2% for each dB of increase in signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio.

Sands of suitable characteristics are used extensively for molds and cores in the casting of metals as a granular medium in municipal water filters, as abrasives, as traction sand to prevent the slipping of driving wheels of self-propelled vehicles on trucks and in various ceramic and other structural forms. In addition to the use of common silicon sands in concrete, cement, and mortar, special sands find use in sand-lime brick oxychloride cement, and flooring, for coating prepared roofing, and for placing ware in saggers although sand for sandpaper has been mostly displaced by other harder mineral or synthetic grains, other abrasive uses are numerous and include sandblasting stone sawing, glass burnishing and finishing."

This contract was concerned with the design, development, fabrication and testing of an improved tamper-proof filter cassette assembly for use in the, collection and evaluation of dust particulates, primarily in mining areas. This report presents the design effort, fabrication and tenting of five- prototypre unit$ as well as the design and production of 1000 filter cassettes with sampling heads. This new improved filter cassette has been tested and approved by NIOSH as meeting the requirements specified in the contract.

"Located in the northwestern portion of the Abitibi greenstone belt, Les Mines Selbaie is a copper-zinc (silver and gold) producer. Felsic tuffs host three are zones. Composed of sulphide veins and breccias, they are not exhalative massive sulphide deposits, except, probably, for the massive pyrite (fragments and lenses) localized close to the top of the volcanic sequence.The total of all (mineable and mined) ore in the three zones presently outlined on the property, is of the order of 29.9 x 106 tonnes with average grade of 0.63 g/t Au, 37.02 g/t Ag, 1.21% Cu, 1.91% Zn.The ore reserve calculations and the daily production procedures are computerized to various degrees. The data handling process is highly computerized.Various geophysical methods are, and have in the past, been successfully used on the property. The ""mise-à-la-masse"" surveys were used to perform the geological interpretation of an underground deposit (A-2 zone). Presently the PULSE-EM surveys are performed in all surface and underground exploration drill holes."

The opposition to the project has risen as a result of some political pressures and from public perceptions about the project’s necessity and its impact on the neighborhood. As a result of this controversy, the Underground Conservation Hall was quickly termed “Bredesen’s Bunker” by the Media. Close exposures for blasting, required by the Conservation Hall construction project, have been regulated by specifications that regulate seismic monitoring, pre-blast and post-blast inspections. Planned blasting for the project included blasting to a depth of 30 feet (9.14 meters) within 35 feet (10.67 meters) of the front of the newly renovated Tennessee Executive Residence. Excavation for the project found more competent rock at higher elevations than identified in test drilling which required blasting within 2 feet (0.61 meters) of the side of the Residence.

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

"Geotechnical structures ,such as underground bunkers, tunnels, and building foundations aresubjected to stress fields produced by..the gravity load on the structure and/or any overlyingstrata. This technology canthen be used to assess the vulnerability of various geotechnical structures to explosive loading.Applications of this technology include assessing the effectiveness of earth penetrating weapons,evaluating the vulnerability of various structures, counter-terrorism, and model validation. Thisdocument describes the development of expertise in scale model explosive testing ongeotechnical structures using Sandia’s large scale centrifuge facility. This study focused onburied structures such as hardened storage bunkers or tunnels. Data from this study was used toevaluate the predictive capabilities oft existing hydrocodes and structural dynamics codesdeveloped at Sandia National Laboratories (such as Pronto/SPH, Pronto/CTH, and ALEGRA)."

The 12th and 14th Street Viaducts, which carry Route 139, are located west of the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey. The two viaducts, provide access to and from the Holland Tunnel (which connects New York City and New Jersey) and carry upwards of 50,0000 vehicles per day from Jersey City and New York City to points west. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) selected AECOM to perform design services including rehabilitation and seismic retrofit for the 12th Street and 14th Street Viaducts while maintaining traffic at all times. Building a new parallel bridge just north of the 14th Street Viaduct was essential in avoiding extremely costly traffic delays. Installation of the new foundation, in close proximity to the existing viaduct, required drilling through some of the existing timber piles supporting the bridge. As a result, the existing bridge was required to be reanalyzed for this new foundation configuration. This proposed structure consisted of 8 piers each supported on a single six (6) foot diameter drilled shaft. Currently this portion of the bridge structure has been constructed. The shafts were constructed with rock sockets that were five feet six inches (5?- 6??) in diameter and were extended 11.2 feet (3.4 meters) into rock. A 2300 ton Osterberg Load Test was performed on one production shaft to confirm the capacity of the shaft. The rock socket for the test shaft was in sandstone. This paper will present a description of the design methodology and construction methods adopted for the foundations. In addition, the paper will illustrate the Osterberg Load Test including: equipment used, number and locations of strain gages, and interpretation of results. Additionally, regarding the close proximity of the new foundation, the paper will present the type of equipment used to drill through the existing timber pile foundation while minimizing the impact on the integrity of the existing foundation. We will also present the method of analysis for analyzing the redistribution of load on the remaining piles. The results presented in this paper will assist the design engineer by providing a comparison between the geotechnical design assumptions and the actual measurements obtained by field measurements for this rock formation.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR) has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills and geochemistry, as well as photographs and bibliographic resources. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential and other data. The National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during the 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses of water samples. ArcMap includes the location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e., hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.
