Sulfide-rich scale occurs in steam and water lines at the Ohaaki geothennal field,Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. Precious metals show very high concentrations around areas ofpressure reduction (Au 15500 ppm, Ag 68800 ppm). Pyrrhotite dominates at the orifice plate due to low PH2s1PH2 conditions. Sulfide mineralogy in the scales is consistent with alteration mineralogy of the reservoir rocks. Separated steam then produces a mainly pyrite/magnetite mineralogy, with lesser chalcopyrite, where textures reflect high flow rates and high levels of supersaturation. This study outlines the effect that pressure and subsequent temperature decreases have on the mineralogy, chemistry and textures of sulfide scales.

In September 2003, a test was conducted to see if a115-mm- (4.5-in.-) diam Mocap Vari-Stem blasthole plug could improve the pattern of explosives using different top stemming material. The test took place at the J.S. Faulkroad and Sonsstone quarry in McCalisterville, PA. The test consisted of a production stone blast. Half of the holes were stemmed with standard crushed stone. Two-thirds of the remaining half were stemmed with Vari-Stem plugs and crushed stone. And the remaining one-third of the second 50 percent was stemmed with Vari-Stem plugs and only drill cuttings.

Located on the Wabash River in the central portion of the state, the city of Lafayette, IN is relatively small compared to most cit-ies that incorporate tunnels into their combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems. The original CSO plan for the city was to replace two aging lift stations that were built in the 1950s. The original con-cept was to build a new sewer using conventional cut-and-cover construction to eliminate one of the lift stations ? the Parking Lot Lift Station ? and build a new regionalized one at the location of the Pearl River Lift Station. The initial sewer design was sized just to handle the flow that would eliminate the Parking Lot Lift Station. The planning for this project was being developed as part of the city?s CSO long-term control plan (LTCP) that focused on reducing the overflows from the city?s 14 overflow points. However, during the development of the CSO LTCP, a major industrial user indicated it would be increasing its flows to the system, which required additional conveyance capacity to meet the city?s CSO LTCP. After reviewing the design concepts with city representatives during the planning phase of the project, the mayor indicated that he wanted to minimize impacts to downtown businesses; therefore, trenchless alternatives were considered. The last piece of the puzzle that drove the project away from a small diameter pipeline was discovered during a flow monitoring program to collect flow data for the CSO LTCP project. This study revealed a major restriction in the 100-year-old Pearl River Trunk Sewer, located beneath four active railroad tracks. To eliminate this flow restriction, provide more overflow storage and reduce the impact to local businesses, a new 2.7- to 3.6-m- (9- to 12-ft-) diameter tunnel sewer became the most viable solution.

Aços baixo-carbono com microestruturas ferrítico-bainíticos, bifásico, ou multifásicos têm características apreciáveis para a indústria automobilística, pois, combinam resistência, ductilidade e conformabilidade, permitindo produzir chapas mais finas resultando na redução do peso. Com o intuito de avaliar as características mecânicas e microestruturais obtidas através da variação da temperatura de bobinamento, desenvolveu-se um estudo a partir de um aço baixo carbono com microadição de molibdênio e nióbio, onde se verificou a possibilidade de produzir um aço dual phase na forma de chapas laminadas a quente, em escala industrial. Pode-se verificar que para menores temperaturas de bobinamento, obteve-se melhor desempenho quanto ao aumento da resistência mecânica e garantia de uma alta ductilidade vinculados a um refino expressivo no tamanho de grão da matriz ferrítica em conjunto com uma segunda fase com evidência de ilhas de martensita.

No processo de produção de gusa são frequentes as pesquisas em busca de meios de redução dos custos do produto final, além de adequações do processo à escassez de matéria-prima e tudo isso com o intuito final de garantir a lucratividade do setor. A preocupação com os impactos ambientais do processo também é assunto frequentemente levantado por profissionais da área devido à sua igualmente grande importância. Através da injeção de materiais pulverizados e gás pelas ventaneiras de um reator é possível conseguir economia de gastos com adição de carvão de topo. Por esse motivo e também visando à redução dos malefícios causados pela liberação de gases diretamente na atmosfera que surgiu a ideia da injeção de biogás pelas ventaneiras. Assim é possível evitar a liberação de CH4 que é altamente prejudicial à vida no planeta, além de reduzir o consumo de carvão de topo no Alto-Forno.Este trabalho discute a variação da Temperatura de Chama frente o efeito da utilização de biogás em Altos-Fornos, bem como o potencial energético desse gás tendo em vista a abundância de fontes de metano provenientes do setor bovino e suíno no Brasil.

Wieliczka es una pequeña villa que se encuentra a menos de 13 Kms. de Cracovia, la anterior capital de Poloniay el centro más antiguo de comercio europeo. La mina fue descubierta hace 1000 años aproximadamente. y su formación geológica consiste en grandes masas de sal gema de enormes dimensiones, cuyas labores mineras realizadas en los últimos mil años tienen más de 200 Kms. de galerías y cerca de 9'000,000 de metros cúbicos de cámaras excavadas. Fue excavada a mano y sin explosivos y se ha conservado a través de los siglos casi intactas."

The formation of the gas emission zone in longwall mining and the potential amount of gas in this zone are factors of local geology and spatial variability within this geology. Therefore, geostatistical methods can be used for modeling and prediction of gas amounts and for assessing its uncertainty in the gas emission zone of longwall mines. This study used core data obtained from 64 exploration boreholes drilled from the surface to the bottom of the Pittsburgh coal seam in a mining district in the Northern Appalachian basin. After identifying important coal layers for the gas emission zone, semivariogram modeling was conducted for different coal seams to define the distribution and continuity of various attributes. Sequential simulations were performed for stochastic assessment of these attributes to calculate gas-in-place (GIP) in each coal seam. GIP calculations for coals of various gas emissions zones were combined and ranked for their cumulative distribution function to find GIP in the caved zone and in the fractured zone at the 5%, 50%, and 95% quantiles. Fifty percent quantile results were later used to isolate a panel from the whole area and create a mosaic representation corresponding to the daily advance rate of the longwall face. This approach helped to estimate the daily emissions of this panel from the caved zone and from the fractured zone. Results showed that gas-in-place in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the caved zone, and in the fractured zone showed spatial correlations that could be modeled and estimated using geostatistical methods. This study showed that gas-in- place volumes in the study area may be as high as 12.3 Bscf and as much as 3.5 MMscf per acre of mining.

A few progressive mining software companies have recognized the benefit of broadening their capabilities to the sand and gravel (aggregate) industry. The most promising new developments have been designed for use with Surpac Vision, one of the world’s leading geological modeling, mine design, and production management systems. Surpac’s broad user-base, who have always had a propensity for customization, are now focusing on development of solutions in the Tool Command Language (Tcl), an interpreted scripting language. Surpac Software International made changes to TCL to add Surpac specific extensions, thus creating the Surpac Command Language (Scl). The Tcl interpreter, including Scl extensions, is bound into the Vision executable to provide a seamless interface to the data objects used internally by Vision, the GUI, and the 3D rendering system. Custom solutions can be incorporated as Vision extensions, or as stand alone-modules used in correlation with modeling, design, and planning functions.

Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 mil-million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious.

"In recent years the recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has received widespread attention. The cost of treating such ores using conventional technology, such as milling and flotation, is frequently prohibitively high and copper recovery is generally low. The introduction of heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) has resulted in high recoveries, good copper cathode quality and low production costs. This technology has now been successfully applied on a worldwide basis.This paper reviews the various process and design options and gives approximate capital and operating costs for a 1.0% copper ore.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of the low copper prices that prevailed for much of the last two decades, aggressive attempts were made by the industry to cut operating costs. Under such circumstances heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, to recover low cost copper from oxide ores, has received particular attention and ultimately widespread acceptance.Low grade copper ore (typically containing less than 1.0% Cu), which could not be economically treated by other methods, is placed on heaps and leached with dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. The copper rich, pregnant solution, drains from the heap into a collecting pond and is pumped to a solvent extraction plant where it is purified and upgraded. The resulting solution, termed the pregnant electrolyte, passes to the electrowinning section where the copper is recovered as high grade cathodes and sulphuric acid is regenerated, (Figure 1).This paper specifically describes the processing of copper oxides. Other copper minerals such as chalcocite and chrysocolla are also leached by dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. In practice the oxide minerals are frequently associated to varying degrees with less easily leached sulphides, such as chalcopyrite. In some cases, once the oxidized capping of the ore body is removed, the oxides are totally replaced by more refractory sulphides. Under these circumstances the leaching recovery is significantly reduced. However the principles described here for solvent extraction and electrowinning are also applicable to solutions received from heaps containing sulphide minerals, which are leached more slowly and involve bacterially induced reactions."

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. Forty one whole rock samples from the Gold Cross low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Ag deposit have d18O values that range from 4.4 to 9.3 per mil, with an average value of 7.0 per mil. Unaltered and weakly altered rocks have d18O values greater than eight per mil, and the orebody is surrounded by samples that are depleted in 18O. A strongly silicified sample adjacent to the Empire Vein System has a d18O value of 9.0 per mil, similar to previously reported analyses of vein quartz (7.0 to 11.7ë, average 9.4ë). This suggests that, in detail, Golden Cross may have a zone of 18O-enriched wall rocks in the core of the deposit, adjacent to the main underground veins. Although some workers have suggested that stable isotope geochemistry may provide useful information for epithermal mineral deposit exploration, at Golden Cross this is not the case. Alteration minerals, major elements and trace elements all define larger, less ambiguous halos than the zone of 18O-depleted wall rocks.

Two new splitter designs for intercepting moving streams of matter are presented, the variable cross-stream splitter (vCSS) and the rotary stream splitter (RSS), which are intended for implementation in a fully automated modus. The vCSS facilitates obtaining up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios from automated laboratory flow paths, while the RSS divides the intercepted sample into 16 equal analytical aliquots. The splitters can process a wide range of dry, granular and free-flowing materials (<5 mm). The required weight for each subsample can be set without mechanical adjustments in the case of the vCSS. Typical applications are subsampling/splitting for X-ray fluorescence pelletisation (or fused beads) or splitting for average shift composite sampling or grain size analysis. The vCSS combines the advantages of riffle splitting (three user-defined subsample masses) with miniature bed blending and can accept up to 15 kg in total incoming sample mass. In practice, the automated vCSS can deal with unlimited ingoing mass fluxes, while the RSS is designed to operate at a user-defined fixed subsampling rate (1/16th in the tested version). Both splitters have the potential to be optimised and evaluated according to an application/user-defined total sampling error (TSE) + total analytical error (TAE) threshold. Both splitters were tested under adverse conditions and with compositions involving three components with properties representing typical mass fluxes and components concentrations in industrial and technological systems: phosphate concentrate 89.00 per cent (<500 µm), slag ten per cent (>2 mm) and glass spheres one per cent (750–1000 µm). The slag particles vary widely in particle shape, aspect ratio and surface roughness, while the glass spheres are extremely prone to bouncing and segregation (spillage). This test system is extremely difficult to split and thus constitutes a realistic worst-case scenario. While the vCSS does not comply strictly with Theory of Sampling demands for correctness, both splitters may well be able to deliver fit-for-purpose representative results if/when tested properly. Average relative mass deviations ranged from 1.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate (relative standard deviations of 20-fold repeated splitting) to 4.72 per cent for glass spheres and 13.04 per cent for slag. For the RSS, the average replication experiment splitting variation was 2.89 per cent for phosphate concentrate, 4.82 per cent for glass spheres and 11.1 per cent for slag. Both new automated online splitters would therefore appear to be able to be tuned to fit-for-purpose representivity (defined here as maximum relative reproducibility <5 per cent) for many non-extreme materials; however, it is always imperative to test every new type/class of material empirically. GIS and multivariate geometric distribution have been used to predict the association of high-level intrusives with hydrothermal alteration related to iron oxide Cu-Au (IOCG) mineralizing systems. Several examples in the Russian northeast are presented in this paper. IOCG ore deposits can have enormous geological resources containing significant reserves of base, precious, and strategic metals, and hence are economically attractive targets for mineral exploration. To date, examples of this type of mineralization have not been reported from the northeastern area of Russia. The Tarinskiy ore cluster, located in Eastern Yakutia, shows brecciated altered rocks with sulphide and iron oxide cement, which is typical for IOCG mineralization of the iron oxide Cu-Au±U type. This cluster was formed near surface and is linked with the Rep- Yuruinskiy pluton. It has potential to host new world-class precious metal deposits in northeastern Russia

Durante a solidificação de ligas metálicas, o produto fundido se contrai, o qual provoca o surgimento de espaçamentos vazios na interface metal/molde chamados de “gaps”. Estes gaps causam o aumento da resistência térmica influenciando em toda a cinética da solidificação. A transferência de calor durante a solidificação depende do conhecido parâmetro chamado de coeficiente global de transferência de calor ( hg). Este parâmetro é representado pela equação do tipo: hg =C.t-n, a qual indica que a eficiência térmica na interface metal/molde decai com o tempo. Muitos parâmetros podem influenciar o coeficiente global de transferência de calor (hg), neste estudo, os percentuais de Sn em ligas do sistema Al-Sn são analisados (10,20,30 e 40%Sn). Portanto, o principal objetivo deste estudo é propor uma relação matemática que descreva, para o sistema Al-Sn, a evolução hg em função do teor de Sn. Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

The newest addition to the Anamax Mining Company's Twin Buttes copper producing complex is a by-product uranium extraction plant which was placed into service in February 1980. The plant is unusual in that it is placed internal to the copper countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction, and electrowinning plant. The plant reached full production within a month and, to date, has produced continually above design rates.
