Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

The uranium industry has made a dramatic turnaround in the past three years that even the most optimistic economist was not willing to predict during the uranium downswing of the 1990s. Uranium reached a 30-year low in February 2001 of $6.50/lb. By the end of February 2006 it had soared to $38.50/pound. This nearly 600% increase in the uranium spot price within 4 years dwarfed the increase in gold price that has barely mustered a 100% increase. The initial slow rise from $6.50 in February 2001 to $10.75 in April 2003 (fig. 1) was primarily driven by the decrease in the value of the dollar. Since then several factors have contributed to the soaring price: (1) The awakening of many to the simple fact that uranium supply has not met demand for several years and that the world’s stockpiles are being drawn down, (2) How sharply this fragile supply can be impacted by disasters at the world’s major uranium production facilities, such as a) the flooding of the McArthur River Mine in the spring of 2003, b) fires at Olympic Dam, c) the potential that Rossing, with an annual capacity of 4000 tonnes uranium might close by 2007, (3) the withdrawal of Tenex from the HEU (highly enriched uranium) feed agreement, and (4) the announcement by the Chinese of their intent to build 30 new nuclear reactors.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

"This paper defines the responsibilities and functions of the Maintenance Department, and its organization, physical and human assets, highlighting the unique operating problems. Due to the self-sufficient aspect of the Asbestos Hill Deception Bay project, the Maintenance Department cover-s fields that are numerous and very dissimilar: production, mobile, processing, service, power generation, fire protection, heating, water and sewage disposal equipment. Added to this, buildings, plant and camps, wharves and communications equipment all demand versatility, adaptability and expertise from maintenance personnel. Good maintenance practices are a necessity in this environment and are more critical than at southern locations; that is, high-quality replacement material, complete and well-controlled preventive maintenance, major repairs on a component-replacement basis, updated inventory, efficient training and permanent contacts with suppliers, combined with an equipment improvement program, updated specifications on lubricants, hoses, seals, filters, etc., are mandatory. The seasonal aspect of the operations applies a great deal of pressure on the maintenance team, as the production months do not permit major repairs. Short- and medium range planning and accurate evaluation of equipment conditions highly influence production efficiency. Maintenance control, planning and scheduling do not follow the accepted standard routines, as personnel turnover normally does not permit an accumulation of knowledge of the equipment history and condition by the •individual tradesman."

Addition of sodium nitrite-borax, sodium hydroxide, sodIUm carbonate, lime, or sodium silicate reduced wear of forged steel balls and cast iron slugs in wet grinding a complex zinc-lead-copper sulphide ore in laboratory ball mills. Maximum wear reductions were 27 per cent (forged steel balls) and 33 per cent (cast iron slugs) with sodium hydroxide and nitrite-borax additives respectively.Potential measurements of balls and slugs during grinding, and analysis of the data in terms of corrosion theory demonstrated that corrosive wear had been reduced or prevented by these additives. Actual per cent wear reductions were not equated to the rate of corrosive wear because of the undefined interdependence between abrasion and corrosion in wear processes. The investigation verifies that in laboratory ball mills corrosion is significant in the wear of grinding media and wear can be reduced by corrosion inhibition and pH adjustment.

Dessa forma, testes no laboratório foram realizados com o objetivo de encontrar um ligante ou mistura de ligantes que proporcione um aglomerado com boa resistência à compressão a frio e boas propriedades mecânicas a quente que garantam sua integridade dentro do forno durante o processo de redução. No presente trabalho apresenta-se a metodologia desenvolvida e os resultados obtidos na fabricação dos briquetes em laboratório e na planta piloto de briquetagem de finos. Adicionalmente, resultados dos briquetes após redução no forno rotativo a escala industrial também são apresentados.

A produção de aço com baixo teor de enxofre é de extrema importância para a indústria naval e de tubos para a indústria de petróleo. Porém, a fabricação destes aços acarreta um maior desgaste do revestimento refratário das panelas de transporte/tratamento de aço das aciarias devido às condições operacionais mais severas (maiores tempos de processo, maiores temperaturas, adições de fluxantes de escória, etc.) exigidas durante o processamento destes aços. Neste trabalho é apresentado o modelamento estatístico do impacto da fabricação deste tipo de aço, via rota de tratamento metalúrgico de dessulfuração de aço, na campanha refrataria (vida) das panelas conjuntamente com a análise post-mortem de tijolos refratários da linha de escória de uma das panelas. O modelamento levou em consideração os dados de 6 meses de operação da aciaria de uma usina integrada com capacidade de 4,5 Mt/ano. A análise dos resultados revelou que os altos tempos de tratamento no refino secundário, especialmente utilizando o forno panela como equipamento de dessulfuração, a adição de compostos fluxantes de escórias contendo sódio, como nefelina, são os principais fatores que degradam a vida do refratário de tais panelas. In November 2016, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake caused more than 100,000 cubic meters of rock and debris to tumble down and bury the transportation infrastructure below Ohau Point in New Zealand. All routes between the northern and southern portions of South Island were severed. To undertake the rebuilding efforts, the New Zealand government established North Canterbury Transport Infrastructure Recovery (NCTIR) – an alliance to repair the road and rail networks between Picton and Christchurch. NCTIR’s aim was to have the road open by Christmas 2017, but work also continued into 2018 to complete a number of safety improvements along the highway. The presentation will review the initial remediation attempts, the necessity to re-evaluate the original efforts, the need to incorporate techniques that were “outside-the-box” and different from traditional methods, and the logistics and planning that were required to complete the work safely. INTRODUCTION Shortly after midnight on Monday 14th November, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the small South Island settlement of Waiau in North Canterbury, 100km north of Christchurch. The quake was the largest in New Zealand since the magnitude 7.8 Dusky Sound earthquake in 2009 (GNS 2016). While shaking was widespread with over 15,000 recorded ‘felt reports,’ the worst shaking occurred about 50 seconds after the quake rupturing started. The energy of the tremor progressed north over several minutes with surface rupture recorded on a total of 21 faults. The length of all the fault ruptures combined was close to 100km (GNS 2016). The degree of ground shaking was high, recorded as Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) Level 8 – Severe. This level of shaking causes considerable damage in ordinary buildings with partial collapse including fall of chimneys, factory stacks, columns, monuments, walls, etc. At a human level, people experience difficulty standing; while furniture and appliances shift. Geologically, the damage depends on the geological setting. In Kaikoura and the surrounding area, especially the coastal highway State Highway 1, north and south of the town, many of the slopes consist of over steepened weathered, fractured greywacke. During the quake, the shaking caused significant and widespread damage with a total of 26 major slips (and many smaller slips); closing both State Highway 1 and the Main North Rail Line between Picton and Christchurch.

No setor de trocadores de calor para refrigeração industrial e câmaras frias o maior desafio é a corrosão do equipamento quando exposto a intempéries. Esta situação em regiões litorâneas é agravada devido ao ataque de sal e ácidos provenientes da atmosfera. Diante disto este mercado sempre procura um aumento na resistência dos componentes das unidades evaporadoras. Neste contexto as aletas, que são feitas utilizando folha de alumínio com revestimento epóxi orgânico dourado, tem papel de grande importância. O presente trabalho visa entender os mecanismos de corrosão da folha nos principais fatores, tais quais, liga, têmpera e revestimento em relação a resistência a corrosão em áreas litorâneas. Os materiais escolhidos foram as ligas 8006 e 8079, na tempera O e com revestimentos base Epóxi e Poliéster. As amostras foram ensaiadas no laboratório utilizando ensaios de corrosão salina e acida que simulam as condições encontradas.

Nestes dias materiais ecológicos como compósitos com fibras naturais em matriz polimérica estão chamando a atenção de pesquisadores científicos, devido ao seu bom desempenho na substituição de materiais como madeira, polímeros à base de petróleo e outros. Neste trabalho foram avaliadas as propriedades de tração de compósitos de matriz epóxi reforçados com diferentes espécimes de fibras lignocelulósicas. Compósitos reforçados com até 30% em volume de fibras longas, contínuas e alinhadas de malva, sisal e bambu foram testados em uma máquina Instron a temperatura ambiente. A fratura foi analisada por SEM. Os resultados mostraram alterações significativas nas propriedades mecânicas com a quantidade dessas fibras. Estas propriedades mecânicas foram comparados com outros resultados em compósitos testados em ensaio de tração. A análise da fratura revelou uma fraca interação da interface fibra / matriz, o que poderia ser responsável por um maior desempenho de algumas propriedades.

State mining regulations in Queensland stipulate that a mine be provided with an earth installed on surface and that all underground equipment that needs to be earthed should be connected via a copper conductor to this surface grounding point. The regulations further require that all exposed metal surfaces in underground substations be connected to an earth. In a study of earthing conditions at Mount Isa mine it was found that the physical anchoring of metal work at substations (with rockbolts and associated steel mesh) also provides an excellent electrical connection to the country rock. It was established that not only is the mine's earthing system grounded at numerous underground locations but also that such anchor points offer, in general, a path to ground with lower resistance than does the legally required grounding point on the surface. It is recommended that metalliferous mines should utilise a multiple-earth system and not a run earth connected to a single, above-ground earth point

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

"As mudanças que ocorrem ao longo do recozimento na microestrutura e textura foram observadas no aço inoxidável ferrítico estabilizado ao nióbio, tipo ASTM 430 por meio de Difração de Elétrons Retroespalhados. As amostras deformadas foram recozidas com uma taxa de aquecimento de 23,5°C/s. O recozimento foi interrompido nas temperaturas de 780, 830 e 880°C para acompanhar a evolução da microestrutura e textura. Os resultados mostraram que a nucleação dos novos grãos ocorre preferencialmente nos contornos de alto ângulo. No estágio inicial da recristalização a fibra g é dominante na fração recristalizada, com as componentes 111121, 1111 ,1 2 mais intensas. Na fração não recristalizada a fibra a foi mais intensa. No progresso da recristalização as componentes 11112 1 e 1111 ,1 2 permanecem predominantes, a fibra g torna-se dominante em detrimento da fibra a."

Knoop hardness measurements were carried out on large grains of iodide titanium containing different amounts of oxygen. For each oxygen content the hardness is recorded ainingas a function of the crystal orientation and of the angle 4 between the indenter diagonal and the projection of the C (hexad) axis in the surface. The results can be expressed by the following relation; hardness = n-k cos 2ø, where n and k are constants for a given oxygen content and crystal surface orientation. A NISOTROPY of hardness is a well-known phe-nomenon and has been reported for many metals.1-3 At the present time, however, such information is not available in the literature for titanium. Consequently, a systematic study of the simultaneous effects of oxygen content and crystallographic orientation on the hardness of titanium was undertaken in this laboratory. Evaluations of oxygen content in titanium are frequently carried out through hardness tests. Although such procedures may be justified in small grain specimens, the results of the present investigation indicate that the anisotropy of hardness should be taken into account in the case of coarsegrained specimens as well as in the case of pronounced preferred orientation. Materials and Experimental Procedures Iodide titanium, 99.99 pet pure and containing of the order of 0.002 wt pet O, was used throughout this investigation. The metal was arc melted in an argon atmosphere and cold rolled into strips 1/16 in. thick. These strips were subsequently recrystal-lized and strain annealed in vacuum (10" mm Hg or better) at 850°C in order to produce crystals varying in diameter from 10 to 25 mm. Oxygen was introduced into selected large crystals by heating at 700°C in an atmosphere of pure oxygen under an observed pressure of approximately 50 mm Hg. Each sample was subsequently annealed in vacuum at 850°C for 100 hr, in order to homogenize the oxygen content throughout the specimen. It was found that longer annealing was not necessary, for no change of surface hardness in a given direction was detected after prolonged annealing. The oxygen content was determined by the difference in weight of the specimens before and after the oxidation-annealing cycle. The accuracy of oxygen determination is within ±0.1 mg in samples weighing 0.5 to 1 g. A vacuum fusion analysis of oxygen was performed on several samples and gave results in good agreement with the ones obtained by the weight change. It should be emphasized that expected weight losses through evaporation of the metal in vacuum at 850°C' are many orders of magnitude lower than the precision of these measurements. Following the annealing treatment, both oxidized and unoxidized crystals were carefully polished. All detectable traces of surface cold working were removed by repeated polishing and etching. Laue back reflection X-ray patterns were taken for each crystal for the purpose of determining the orientation and ascertaining the absence of substructures detectable by this method. Hardness measurements, using a 1 kg load, were subsequently carried out on a Tukon hardness tester equipped with a Knoop indenter. The Knoop indenter was used throughout this work because indentations obtained by means of a Vickers indenter are considerably distorted due to the anisotropy of the elastic constants in titanium. Este último es un insumo indispensable para ambos procesos, ya que constituye un elemento determinante del volumen de producción, así como un medio de vinculación obligado con el entorno social de las operaciones. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe la utilización del agua- en tanto representa un componente de rentabilidad relacionada al costo, al equilibrio del aprovechamiento con el comportamiento de la fuente y a la sostenibilidad con el entorno social, lo cual implica compartir el agua y recursos económicos para una planificación y adecuada priorización en su asignación.

A formação de nitretos na superfície de aços Interstitial Free (IF) nitretados a plasma em função da temperatura de tratamento foi investigada. Amostras de aço IF estabilizados ao Ti, laminado a frio e com shot peening foram nitretadas a plasma nas temperaturas de 450°C, 475°C e 500°C durante 4 horas. A camada nitretada resultante foi caracterizada por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), difração de raios-X (DRX) e método Rietveld. As imagens de MEV revelaram duas principais regiões na camada nitretada formada nas três temperaturas de tratamento: uma camada de compostos constituída de ?-Fe2-3N e ?’-Fe4N e uma camada de difusão apresentando uma matriz ferrítica com finos precipitados de ?’’-Fe16N2. Através da DRX, foi observada uma variação na proporção das fases ?-Fe2-3N e ?’-Fe4N. A partir de análises Rietveld, foi sugerido que a maior temperatura de nitretação facilitou a formação de nitretos ?-Fe2-3N, uma vez que a quantidade dessa fase aumentou de 475°C para 500°C. A presença deste precipitado com maior teor de nitrogênio sugere uma possível maior aplicabilidade dos aços IF.

During 1928 questionnaires covering the calendar year 1927 were sent to over 1700 quarries: producing stone for purposes other thaw cutting to dimension. These inclined producers of stone for limn burning; cement manufacture, rip rag, and crushed stone. The various rinds of stone represented were limestone, trap rock, sandstone, granite, and marble. Replies received from limestone producers prior to November, 1928, were compiled into tables and published in February, 1925, as a preliminary report (Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 2911).

Service failures of seemingly conventional galvanized bolts, in normal operation, on transmission towers in New Brunswick have been found to be the result of hydrogen cracking. In both these cases, similar failures elsewhere can be avoided by suitable clauses in the purchase specifications. In the first case described, the manufacturing procedure was responsible for strengthening and embrittling a standard, soft, constructional steel. In this case, a fracture mechanics analysis predicted critical crack depths for final fracture very similar to those found in practice. This case reveals an apparent cooperative connection between hydrogen embrittlement and strain ageing in plain carbon steels. In the second case described, the steel was simply a high strength steel which should not have been made into galvanized bolts.

INTRODUCTION Background Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the largest cities of the world. As many as 33 million people live in Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures although the city occupies only 0.6% of the area of the country. The network of Metropolitan Expressways serves as a major artery for daily physical distribution in Tokyo. The Central Circular Route of the Metropolitan Expressway (MECCR) is located innermost among the three circular routes in Tokyo (Figure 1). Once completed, MECCR is expected to drastically mitigate traffic congestion in the central Tokyo area and provide drivers wider varieties of options in route selection. Alleviating congestion is estimated to reduce 400,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The eastern and northern sections and part of the western section of MECCR have been completed with the total length reaching 33 km. The western section will be extended southward by approximately 4 km in the spring of 2010. An 11-km-long western section of MECCR that is currently being constructed is composed mostly of tunnels. A large number of power supply, gas supply, telephone, drinking water and sewerage pipes have been placed under the Yamatedori avenue along which MECCR is being constructed. The shield tunneling method has therefore been adopted for constructing tunnels along the route. The method involves the advancement of a shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) through the ground simultaneously assembling segmental rings within the shield. The method not only enables the building of highway tunnels more quickly and efficiently than other methods but also minimizes the effects of construction work on the surrounding area and the environment. Constructing the tunnel using the conventional cut-and-cover method might have required large amounts of time and cost because relocating the numerous objects buried under the Yamatedori avenue might have been necessary during tunnel construction. It was also considered desirable to place the tunnel at a depth of 30 m or more from surface to prevent tunnel construction from adversely affecting railways because the tunnel was expected to cross eleven railways and subways. This is one of the reasons for selecting shield tunneling as an effective method. The shield tunneling method was finally adopted for a length of 7 km in the 11-km western section of MECCR. The shield tunneling method was also employed in the Ohashi Tunnel located southernmost in the 11-km western section of MECCR. This paper describes the construction of the Ohashi Shield Tunnel.
