This report describes an accident, which took place in the Chemical Corrosion Laboratory at the College Park, Md., Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The accident occurred while Walter L. Acherman, chemist, was performing a routine manipulation during a corrosion experiment involving commercially pure titanium and red-fuming nitric acid. There was a sudden and very violent reaction, and a large quantity of acid was thrown in the face and over the body of Acherman, causing serious injury. L. B. Golden, chief of the Chemical Corrosion Section, was exposed to nitric acid fumes during the ensuing rescue and first-aid operations and died on January 25, 1954. According to the medical report, the direct cause of Mr. Golden's death was pulmonary edema and confluent bronchopneumonia; the contributary cause, was inhalation of fumes from red fuming nitric acid. The following employees of the College Park Station contributed to this report by supplying information on the accident and assisted in the rescue operation: L. B. In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. The study includes considerations and suggestions for safe technology integration

"SynopsisThe need to reduce weight while maintaining good mechanical properties in materials used in the automotive industry has over the years seen an increased exploitation of various steels to meet this new demand. In line with this development, the ferritic stainless steel family has seen a wide application in this industry, with the AISI 436 type increasingly being used for automotive trims and mufflers for exhaust systems, as well as a significant part of this steel’s application being for the manufacture of wheel nuts and wheel nut caps in trucks, mainly through the deep drawing process. However, there have been reports of some poor surface roughening of this material during deep drawing, with tearing and/or cracking also reported in some instances. This has been suspected to possibly be associated with some local differences in localized mechanical properties between grains and grain clusters of the rolled and annealed material.In order to investigate the poor surface roughness exhibited by AISI 436 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) during deep-drawing, Lankford values (R-mean and ?r), grain size, and microtextures of various sheet samples from this steel were studied. The chemical composition range for the samples was 0.013–0.017% C, 17–17.4% Cr, 0.9–1% Mo, and 0.4–0.5% Nb. The steels were subjected to various hot and cold rolling processing routes i.e. involving industrial direct rolling (DR) or intermediate annealing rolling (IR), and the drawability and final surface qualities of the steels were compared. It was found that the DR route gave an average R-mean and ?r value of 1.9 and -1.4 respectively, while the IR route yielded an average Rmean and ?r value of 1.6 and 0.52 respectively. The high ?r value for the DR processing route had a substantial adverse effect on the drawability. IR samples exhibited a smoother surface finish on visual inspection, while clear flow lines were visible on the DR samples, despite the fact that DR is the preferred industrial processing route due to the reduced production costs it offers. This observation was also confirmed through SEM examinations. The difference in the surface quality was attributed to microtexture. However, the mechanism responsible for this difference still needs to be identified."

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. The United States not only is the largest producer of phosphate rock but also manufactures and consumes greater quantities of phosphate products than any other country. New and expanding uses will increase even further the demand for this basic raw material. Only a small proportion of the total quantity of phosphate rock mined and marketed is consumed directly in a raw or unprocessed state; the vast bulk is chemically treated and converted into [ertilizer] and a wide variety of finished products that play a vital role in [r] national economy. Three fundamental methods are employed in decomposing phosphate rock. 1. Reduction by carbon at high temperatures. 2. Treatment with one or more acids. 3. Calcination or fusion with silica, sodium salts, magnesium minerals, or small quantities of phosphoric acid.

The Leigh Creek Coalfield is owned and operated by the Electricity Trust of South Australia to supply fuel to the Northern Power Station. To supply electricity at lowest cost, a costing and decision process that establishes the role of the Leigh Creek Coalfield in the overall system planning and operation is required. The costing is integrated in that it is based not just on a particular mine plan but on the wider need to supply a particular electrical demand. The detail costing has evolved over time from manual to main-frame computer to microcomputer techniques. Now there is a choice between fast consistent costs and a slower but more detailed and flexible costing.

"Suncor Energy’s Project Millennium increased oilsands production capacity by an additional 95,000 barrels per day to its present level of 225,000 barrels per day. This massive venture included an expanded Mine, new Extraction and Upgrading facilities, as well as, steam and utilities infrastructuresIn the Primary Extraction process, removal of the bitumen from the oil sand begins with slurry preparation and is followed by primary , secondary and tertiary separation processes. The final cleaning step of the bitumen froth is the Secondary Extraction process, that removes residual water, mineral and solids to produce a clean diluted bitumen suitable for Upgrader feedstock.This paper will review the flowsheet of the Millennium Primary Extraction facility, from its recent commissioning through the ramp up to design production rates. In addition, new technologies in the Primary Extraction flowsheet will be reviewed.INTRODUCTIONAs conventional supplies of oil and gas are depleted in Canada, the Athabasca oil sands industry of Alberta becomes an increasingly important source of energy. Today, high quality crude from Alberta’s oil sands accounts for roughly 30% of Canada’s daily petroleum production. According to government projections, over the next 7 years, oil sands production is expected to more then double, and by 2010 more than half of Canada’s crude oil is expected to come from the oil sands.Oil sands deposits consist of a layer of sand saturated with bitumen covered by a muskeg overburden and underlain by silt and clay. The oil sand is mined where the overburden is economical to remove, typically less than thirty meters thick. The Athabasca oil sand deposits around Fort McMurrray is ideal for mining. Bitumen can be described as a diverse collection of hydrocarbons, organosulfur, and nitrogen compounds."

Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

One of the main problems related to mining investment decisions is the use of accurate prediction models. Metallurgical recovery is a major source of variability, and in this regard, the Chuquicamata processing plant recovery was modelled as a function of geomining-metallurgical data and ore characteristics obtained from a historical database. In particular, the dataset gathered contains information related to feed grades, ore hardness, particle size, mineralogy, pH, and flotation reagents. A systemic approach was applied to fit a multivariate regression model representing the copper recovery in the plant. The systemic approach consists of an initial projection of the characteristic grinding product size (P80), based upon energy consumption at the particle size reduction step, followed by a flotation recovery model. The model allows for an improvement in the investment decision process by predicting performance and risk. The final geometallurgical model uses eight operational variables and is a significant improvement over conventional prediction models. A validation was performed using a recent data-set, and this showed a high correlation coefficient with a low mean absolute error, which reveals that the geometallurgical model is able to predict, with acceptable accuracy, the actual copper recovery in the plant.

La mina de cobre de Mantos Blancos es conocida desde 1913 y está situada a unos 45 Kms. al Noreste de Antofagasta, Chile. El mineral de Mantos Blancos es del tipo óxido y contiene solamente trazas de sulfuros que requieren de un chancado muy fino. Por ello se creó el diseño de un sistema de planta que maneje mejor esos componentes a través de la instalación de dos stockpiles, después del chancado primario, de forma que estos alimenten el mineral en forma controlada y proporcional y así aprovechr la alta proporción de carga recirculante en el circuito de chancado terciario, para obtener una íntima mezcla de los dos componentes.

There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production.Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. This accounts for most of the potassium produced. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.About 95% of potash produced worldwide is used in agriculture. The deposits lie diagonally across the southern plains of Saskatchewan sloping southerly from a 1,000m depth at Saskatoon to more than 1,600 m depth at Belle Plaine and up to 3,000 m in depth in North Dakota. The known deposits are massive, accounting for more than 40% of the world’s known reserves."

In some underground hard-rock mines, squeezing compressive ground conditions are influenced by the presence of rock foliation and high stress. In these cases, the orientation of the foliation with respect to the drift direction has a considerable impact on the magnitude of the resulting deformation. Irrespective of the reinforcement and support strategy, keeping drives developed sub-parallel to the rock foliation operational is difficult, and often requires excessive rehabilitation during the lifetime of the excavation. This study uses field observations and convergence measurements at the LaRonde and Lapa mines of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd to provide guidelines of the anticipated squeezing levels at these operations.

The trend towards proportionately rising volumes of surface mining through- out the world and especially in the United States has led some observers to predict that the future of underground mining is quite limited. Certainly, the simple extrapolation of current trends1 gives evidence of a compelling sort for the hypothesis that technological progress is proceeding at a faster pace in surface than in underground mining. This paper attempts to examine the basis for these predictions by searching the historical record on differential rates of productivity as these are observed in iron ore and coal mining. In recent years economists have discussed "technology gaps" among industries or segments of the same industry, by which they mean that mechanisms for invention and its diffusion are faulty or retarded in such a way that feasible cost-cutting innovations are not applied or developed, even though technicians regard them as practical.2

An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the 'Mo-granites', and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the 'Mo-granite' belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

Project C9040 – ‘Structure Response to Blast Vibration’, funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), involved the investigation of the structural response from blast vibration of three houses of brick veneer construction subject to a wide range of ground vibration levels. This paper summarises the findings of a house subject to vibration levels up to 220 mm/s (8.7 in/s). Damage attributable to blast vibration was not observed until vibration levels exceeded 70 mm/s (2.8 in/s).

A quick-reaction, mine permissible rescue vehicle (MERV) was developed for use by rescue teams. The MERV is a 6-wheeled, battery-powered unit with life support equipment and instrumentation; designed for a two-man team, with provisions for handling two victims or tools in a trailer. The vehicle is 100 inches long, 56 inches wide, and maximum height of 34 inches. It can be lowered down most mine shafts and has clearance to travel mine railways. The vehicle has power to all six wheels with power transmitted separately to either or both sets of wheels. Low-pressure, high-traction tires give the vehicle the ability to handle soft, muddy mine floors, flooded areas and significant obstacles, and can negotiate a 45% grade. Power and life support are sufficient for a 4-hour mission. The life support system is a commercially-available, approved unit currently used by MESA rescue personnel. A payout wire system provides communication between the vehicle and home base over a distance of 10,000 feet. On-board monitoring of carbon monoxide, methane and oxygen is provided, with master and individual alarms to warn of gas concentrations outside pre-set limits. A lightweight, water-tight trailer was developed for carrying victims or hauling tools and equipment.
