AMONG the multifarious duties which fall to the lot of a mining engineer it is safe to say that there is none of more fundamental importance than the study of the ore-deposits on which it is thefunction of his profession to operate, inasmuch as the whole business of mining in all its complicated ramifications rests first of all on the existence of something to mine. -When the ore supplies in a mine fail, the enterprise comes to- an end, and nothing, therefore, is of more importance than a thorough understanding of the conditions under which the ore occurs, so that everything possible may be done to open up the mines well ahead of their immediate output requirements, and develop new ore reserves to take the place of that which is raised from day to day. The great aim which the mining engineer has to keep before him in his study of his ore-deposits is to obtain such a knowledge of them that he will have sound grounds for prediction as to how they will behave in parts of the mines which are well beyond the point of the pick. It is on his judgment of probabilities in this respect that mining operations are entered upon, and the more thorough his knowledge of all the factors affecting the problem, the more is the judgmentlikely to be a sound one. The test of any theory is experimental confirmation of the truth of predictions based upon it, and our aim should be to try to perfect our knowledge of the rules governing deposition of ores, so that our theories may prove themselves equal to the task of successful prediction.

Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

In recent years it has been more and more recognised that applied geology can be of service to the mining industry, and many mining companies overseas now have permanent geological staff as part of the operating organisation.Most of these companies insist that the geological department must pay for itself by the savings it can make in operating cost, and the growing use of the geologist is proof that such savings are made.The geological problems in every district are different, and a description of the problems and method of attack in a specified district is a useful addition to the literature of mining geology. Very few contributions, from the standpoint of the mining company geologist, have appeared in the Australian literature so that, although the operations of Bendigo Mines Limited are still in the development stage, and its geological work newly established, a description of the routine geological work at Bendigo should beof interest.Although most Bendigo mining companies have not employed permanent geologists, they have utilised geological guidance wherever possible, and a great body of data has grown up. Acknowledgment is made here to the valuable work of the Geological Survey of Victoria, especially the writings of E. J. Dunn, H. Herman, and H. S. Whitelaw, and the maps of Caleb Thomas and H. S. Whitelaw; and also to the work of independent investigators, notably Chief Geologist, Bendigo Mines Ltd.

Research on the solid-fuel reduction of Knob Lake iron or was conducted to upgrade lean and high-grade ores and recover metallized products suitable for ironmaking or steelmaking. The program included bench-scale tests plus a number of continuous campaigns in a 34-inch by 36-foot rotary kiln. In the laboratory, metallizations in excess of 90 percent were achieved by reduction of crushed ore with lignite at 950° C. Subsequent grinding (to minus 200 mesh) and wet magnetic separation yielded concentrates analyzing less than 3.0 percent SiO2 and more than 90 percent Fe. Virtually complete recovery of the iron occurred. During early continuous tests the crushed ore created a serious ringing in the kiln which was solved by balling the fines with bentonite. Unfortunately, at this temperature (950° C) the bentonite militates against the concentratability of the metallized product. For example, a run on direct-shipping ore produced concentrates of 89.5 percent Fe and 4.5 percent SiO2. At 500° C the adverse effect of bentonite disappeared and concentrates of 88.4 Fe and only 2.5 percent SiO2 resulted. However, with comparable feed r Los, the metallization dropped to 73 percent.

Uranium in situ leach mining has recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional miring techniques. The cost implications of in situ mining are therefore of increasing interest to mining paracticioners as well as public officials. This report presents the results of an assessment of uranium in situ leach mining costs through the application of process engineering and discounted cash flow analysis procedures. A computerized wasting technique, termed a cost model, was developed through this effort to facilitate rapid cost analyses. Application of this cost model will generate mine life capital and operating costs as well as solve for economic production cost/lb. U308. Conversely rate of return may be determined subject to a known selling price. The data bases of the cost made! have been designed to reflect variations in Texas vs. Wyoming site applications. The results If applying the model under numerous ore deposit, operating, wellfield and extraction plant conditions for Texas and Wyoming are summarized in the report. Sensitivity analysis of changes in key project parameters have also been tested and reported.

Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

The smelting of the Broken Hill lead concentrates at the Broken Hill Asso,ciated Smelters produced, among other products, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold and 8,800,000 ounces of silver during the year ending June 30th, 1938. The following table shows the actual amounts of gold per ton of lead concentrate produced during this period at the important mines. The total gold in the period is calculated from the number of tons of lead concentrates produced, and by comparison with the production' of silver, shows thatthere is no constant relation between the amounts of gold and silver.The fact that no gold is seen during milling, even when gravity concentrating tables are employed, signifies that the gold does not occur as occasional coarse particles.Further, as the values increase considerably in the flotation slime, it can be inferred that the gold occurs as minute inclusions in one or more of the minerals in the lead concentrates.The four most abundant minerals in the lead concentrate are galena, zinc blende, chalcopyrite, and...

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

A case study is presented of the mechanical behaviour of fractures in the Westphalian A and B siliciclastic succession of mud-, silt- and sandstones with intercalating coal layers in the Campine basin of northeast Belgium. Mining ceased in the area in 1992 and a pilot well was drilled to assess the feasibility of methane extraction by hydraulic fracturing. Work was carried out to study the influence of types of cement fill in fractures on the shear behaviour of the rocks by comparison with that of the coal seams. X-ray computerised tomography was used for visual appraisal and selection of jointed rocks before destructive shear testing was carried out. Two major type of veins were found to be present, one cemented with carbonate and the other with kaolinite or kaolinite/carbonate. Uniaxial compressive strength and shear tests showed that differentiation of the two types of veins was vital in evaluating the strength of the sandstones, as cementing of the fractures by rigid carbonate minerals can reinstate the strength of the rock masses to that of the intact material. We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

The south west area of Cyprus has a long history of slope instability problems. The location and extent of these landslides has been influenced by ground morphology, geological structure and the presence of weak rocks and cohesive soils. The main triggering mechanisms have been precipitation and/or seismic events. Landslides have contributed to the decision to relocate villages and considerable efforts have been put into maintaining the integrity of the local transportation network. This paper uses a recent case study of road embankment failure near Pentalia in southwest Cyprus to review the available tools for the analysis of slope instability. It further demonstrates how the shear strength reduction technique can be used in a finite element analysis to better visualise the slope instability mechanism of a road embankment and provide a reliable tool in selecting appropriate remedial measures.

Arguably, one of the most significant technological breakthroughs that had been experienced during the period when British Coal was the major coalmine operating company in the UK, the use of rockbolts as principal support in underground roadways brought with it the need to re-assess the technical knowledge, management controls and legislative frameworks associated with the support of mine workings. Following a major roof fall in a roadway supported principally using rockbolts in which fatalities occurred, the process of the design of rockbolted support and the systems and procedures that had been put in place to control its use in the UK were further reviewed. The paper discusses the outcome of these reviews, and how the incident initiated a major new interest in strata control research in the UK against the background of the fragmentation of the ownership of the mines following the sale of the former British Coal assets at the end of 1994, together with the proposed introduction of new strata control legislation in 1996.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels — basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP during 2004 increased by 4.4 percent. The nominal GDP was about $11.7 trillion. Housing starts were up by slightly more than 4 percent for the year. And the nation’s unemployment rate decreased to5.5 percent in 2004 from 6 percent in 2003. Interest rates continued to be low (prime rate was 5.25 percent at the end of 2004) but have risen gradually, following rising inflation.

This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

"Koudiat Aïcha is a small Zn-Pb-Cu deposit, enclosed in the Visean Sarhlef volcano-sedimentary series of the Moroccan Hercynian Jebilet massif. Base metal mineralization is located between a basal unit consisting of black argillite with arenite intercalations, and an upper unit composed of black argillite with locally fossiliferous calcareous units towards the top. Paraconcordant gabbro sills are present in both the upper and basal units, and the enclosing strata. Three successive phases of deformation linked to regional deformation overprint the volcano-sedimentary rocks and gabbros, as well as the sulfide mineralization.The mineral deposit includes several lenses of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite, 1 to 20 m thick, with a large halo of disseminated sulfide veinlets and sulfide nodules within a zone of intense chlorite alteration in the footwall. The ore mineralogy consists of massive to semimassive pyrrhotite with lesser amounts of sphalerite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, pyrite, and stannite.Lead isotope results (206Pb/204Pb averaging 18.27) suggest that the metals of the Koudiat Aïcha deposit are derived from the volcano-sedimentary host rocks. Sulfur isotopes also indicate a volcano-sedimentary origin, with bacterial reduction of sulfate (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ to -10.5‰). The conditions for sulfide meta-morphic equilibration range from 250° to 330°C (sphalerite and chlorite geothermometers). The gabbroic sills could have been a local heat source for hydrothermal circulation. Based on these geological and mineralogical features, a Besshi-type model seems appropriate for the genesis of the Koudiat Aïcha mineralization.Koudiat Aïcha est un petit dépôt de Zn-Pb-Cu, encaissé dans la série volcano-sédimentaire Viséenne de Sarhlef dans le massif Hercynien de Jebilet au Maroc. La minéralisation en métaux usuels se situe entre une unité basale d’argilite noire interlitée d’arénite et une unité supérieure composée d’argilite noire comprenant localement des calcaires fossilifères près de son sommet. Des sills de gabbro paraconcordants sont présent à la fois dans les unités basale et supérieure, ainsi que dans les strates environnantes. Trois phases de déformation successives associées a la déformation régionale superposent leurs effets sur les roches volcano-sédimentaires, les gabbros, ainsi que la minéralisation sulfurée. Ce gîte comprend plusieurs lentilles de pyrrhotite massive a semimassive de 1 a 20 m d’épaisseur au sein d’un large halo de veinules de sulfures disséminés et en nodules au sein d’une zone intensément chloritisée dans le mur du gisement. Le minerai consiste en pyrrhotite massive à semimassive avec des quantités subordonnées de sphalérite, de chalcopyrite, d’arsénopyrite, de galène, de pyrite, et de stannite. Les résultats de l’analyse des isotopes du plomb (206Pb/204Pb moyen de 18.27) suggèrent que les métaux du gîte Koudiat Aïcha proviennent des roches volcano-sédimentaires encaissantes. Les isotopes du souf¬fre indiquent eux-aussi une origine volcano-sédimentaire, impliquant la réduction bactérienne des sulfates (d34SCDT = -7.5‰ et -10.5‰). L’équilibration métamorphique des sulfures s’est produite entre 250° et 330°C (géothermomètres à sphalérite et chlorite). Les sills de gabbro pourraient avoir été la source de chaleur locale responsable de la circulation hydrothermale. En este sentido, dichos yacimientos no son el origen de las aguas y por ello, no se les puede declarar zonas intangibles en las que no se otorga ningún derecho para su uso, disposición y vertimiento de agua. Para ello, se revisa el origen de las aguas de escorrentia superficial, evolución de precipitaciones con altitud, las precipitaciones en la vertiente del Pacífico Peruano, del Amazonas y en el contexto global peruano.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimination of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To determine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with reference to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope.
