Turkish iron and steel sector, the base of which was established in the 1930?s, plays an important role in the industrialization and development of the country?s economy. In Türkiye this sector is the major consumer of ferroalloys. There had been a great improvement in Turkish Iron and Steel industry, especially after the 1980?sand as a result, 20.9 million tons of yearly crude steel production placed Türkiye 11th in the global steel output and 3rd in Europe. 15 % of steel produced in Türkiye is flat products, while the long products make the rest. The product composition and the general characteristics of steel production process led to an increase in ferroalloy consumption. Domestically consumed ferroalloys are especially ferromanganese, silicomanganese, and ferrosilicon. As of today, ferroalloy production capacity of Türkiye is 173,800 tons/year; 161,500 tons of which is ferrochrome with high and low carbon grades, 7,300 tons of ferrosilicochrome and the rest is ferrosilicon (5,000 tons/year). Türkiye is one of leading ferrochrome producers in the world considering the above mentioned production figures. However, this production is mainly exported since Türkiye?s stainless steel production level is modest requiring low amounts of ferrochrome. The products of iron and steel industry in Türkiye require large quantities of other ferroalloys, which make Türkiye a major importer and exporter of ferroalloys. The aim of this work is to present production, consumption, import and export quantities of: ferrochrome, ferromanganese, ferrosilicon, ferromolybdenum, ferrotungsten, ferrotitanium and ferrovanadium of Türkiye, between 1990 and 2006.

Computer simulations were carried out using calcium ferrite slags containing 25 wt% CaO, and the results compared with those obtained using fayalite slags. There was little difference in overall elimination of Pb and Bi, but elimination of Sb and As was much lower with calcium ferrite slag. When calcium ferrite slag is used only in the converting stage and fayalite slag in the smelting stage, as in the Mitsubishi process, the contents of Sb and As in the blister copper can be kept to reasonable levels. This allows advantage to be taken of the considerably higher iron oxide-holding capacity of calcium ferrite slag than of fayalite slag at the high oxygen potential under converting conditions, thus preventing precipitation of magnetite. The development of flotation machines since the first industrial use of the process can be divided into three stages. The first, up to about 1930, was marked by diversity in the means for contacting floatable mineral with the air/ water interface and for generating the interface, as well as in cell design. By 1927 Taggart (1) could list 170 patents covering flotation cells, and he mentioned dozens which were or had been in operation. He divided cells into eight categories according to design, type of separating interface, and where in the cell and how separation took place. These were: (1) Film or skin flotation with wet or dry oiling of surfaces; (2) pulp body process with bubbles generated chemically by pressure reduction, by vacuum or by boiling; (3) agitation-froth processes involving local supersaturation with air; (4) bubble column; (5) pneumatic; (6) cascade; (7) subaeration; and (8) combination and miscellaneous types and processes. Most widely used then were the agitation-froth, sub- aeration, pneumatic types. By 1943 a significant reduction in categories had occurred to the two main divisions of mechanical and pneumatic cells according to whether agitation and aeration were (a) by an impeller with or without compressed air, or (b) by compressed air alone. Cells at that time were still relatively small; the Morenci Concentrator completed in 1942 used 432 1.7m3 (60 cu ft) Fagergrens for roughing 45,000 and later up to 55,000 t/d.

The invention of the traditional belt and idler conveyor system is attributed to Thomas Robins in 1892. This basic concept, ubiquitous in most mining operations, has not changed markedly in 125 years and still suffers from five forms of energy losses. Firstly, Wheeler, Roberts and Jones (2004) showed that indentation rolling losses, a consequence of the indentation a roller inflicts on the belt, consume 60 per cent of all energy. Secondly, Wheeler (2006) explained that bulk solid flexure resistance resulting from material interaction and movement absorbs 20 per cent. The remaining energy is lost by idler rotating resistance (5 per cent), belt flexure resistance (5 per cent) and secondary resistances (10 per cent).Traditional conveyor systems are continuous as opposed to batch systems, implying both positive and negative features. On one hand, continuous systems have high availability (available infers ‘ready to run’), but, on the other, utilisation of availability is often low; for example, when a conveyor is running empty or below capacity. This converts into reduced system OEE (overall effective efficiency). Many attempts have been made to mitigate energy losses and low OEE issues, including development of rail-based systems. The key drawbacks have been higher capital cost, low flexibility, poor availability and lack of market acceptance.A recent conceptual development known as the ‘autonomous rail conveyor’ (ARC) promises to address issues of energy loss and poor availability and provide increased flexibility by offering solutions for difficult applications. The ARC uses a series of interconnected skeletal bogies covered with a conventional conveyor belt as a load bed running on relocatable light rail. The bogeys have two axles, each driven by integrated variable speed-geared motor and brake systems, and are connected to previous/next bogeys by specialised couplers. Power is provided by a generator (located in a dedicated bogey) and ‘daisy chain’ plug in cables. Centralised redundant control is provided at a preferred point. Although the system is batch in nature, the number of carriages and trains is flexible, meaning that the system is effectively continuous. Loading is achieved by feeding the ARC from a perpendicularly oriented apron feeder, while material off-loading is accomplished by a twist-dump operation in which the belt is twisted through an angle of 50° below the horizontal, causing material to flow from the belt into a receiving conveyor.The ARC system can run multiple trains over any distance, although benefits are more significant in distances of over two kilometres. Capital and operating costs are predicted to be lower than competitive products, with planned maintenance being simple to perform.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. Aços austeníticos resistentes ao calor apresentam propriedades mecânicas que permitem seu uso em altas temperaturas e pressão, sendo frequentemente utilizados em fornos de reforma e pirolise. Devido às severas condições de operação danos de carburização podem ser induzidos. No presente trabalho foram analisados corpos de prova provenientes de fornos de reforma que apresentaram baixos níveis carburização. Com a finalidade de desenvolver uma metodologia que permita detectar e separar diferentes níveis de carburização, foi projetado, simulado e construído um sensor magnético constituído por um yoke e um sensor Hall. De acordo aos resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que o sensor permitiu determinar confiavelmente o nível de carburização em ligas austeníticas que estiveram expostas a diferentes temperaturas de operação.

O algaraviz é uma parte importante do sistema de sopro de um Alto-Forno, utilizado para direcionar o sopro e combustíveis injetados para a ventaneira, por conseguinte o interior do forno. O algaraviz consiste em uma caraça metálica revestida de material refratário com resistência ao calor e uma camada de isolante térmico entre o refratário e a carcaça. Falhas em serviço de algaravizes costumam a gerar grandes danos materiais, financeiros e com grande risco à vida dos operadores, por isso o controle e inspeção da integridade estrutural e térmica dos algaravizes é de suma importância. A inspeção nos algaravizes é realizada a fim de se detectar precocemente pontos quentes que são indicativos de falhas estruturais no algaraviz. Portanto este artigo foi feito um modelo numérico de transferência de calor, a fim de se averiguar as condições do algaraviz, de forma a verificar se o algaraviz em condições normais de operação mantem as condições térmicas. O modelo revelou resultados satisfatórios de forma que em comparação com resultados de inspeções em peças em operação se obteve um erro de cerca de 8%.

A crescente demanda por energia elétrica nas aeronaves modernas pode ser constatada pelo aumento da potência elétrica gerada a bordo, como exemplo o Boeing 787 produz 1000kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz variável contra 240kVA, 200V trifásico, 400Hz fixo produzido pelo Airbus A330, apesar de possuírem aproximadamente as mesmas dimensões. Devido à necessidade de redução de massa de transformadores, a frequência utilizada na geração de eletricidade na aeronave é de 400Hz o que acaba produzindo um aumento das perdas em núcleos de FeSi destes transformadores, principalmente pelo aumento das correntes parasitas no núcleo. Transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe vêm apresentando redução de até 70% das perdas no núcleo quando operados em 50Hz ou 60Hz. Assim, esse estudo visa discutir as vantagens e desvantagens do uso de transformadores elétricos com núcleos de ligas amorfas a base de Fe em aeronaves. Os resultados mostram que, com o desenvolvimento de novas ligas, tal utilização mostra-se viável devido a uma redução de peso de tais transformadores.

Tensões residuais podem ser muito prejudiciais ao desempenho de um componente, tornando sua quantificação e avaliação extremamente uteis. A difração de raios-X é um método de análise não destrutivo que permite avaliar as tensões sem comprometer o material. Neste trabalho, tiras de aço duplex UNS S32304 com 1,8mm de espessura foram cortadas nas dimensões 36x72mm e soldadas de modo autógeno através do processo TIG. Produziram-se dois tipos de amostras variando-se o gás de proteção a saber: mistura de argônio 98% e nitrogênio 2% e argônio 99.995%. Utilizou-se um difratômetro com geometria Bragg-Brentano, fonte de radiação CuKa ( = 1,5419Å). A técnica sen2 ? foi empregada para determinar a tensão residual da fase austenita no ângulo 2?=146.22°. Os resultados mostram um estado de tensões residuais trativo nas proximidades da zona fundida, chegando a um estado compressivo em regiões distantes. A análise comparativa dos perfis de tensão residual revela que a amostra soldada apenas com argônio apresenta menor tensão residual trativa na zona fundida.

Vision 21 is a government/industry/academia cost-shared partnership to develop the technology basis for integrated energy plants that will, early in the 21stcentury, result in the deployment of ultra-clean plants that produce electricity and “opportunity” products. Vision 21 plants will use fossil fuel feed-stocks in combination with other domestic resources, e.g., biomass, municipal waste, and petroleum coke. Opportunity products could include transportation fuels, steam, high-value chemicals, synthesis gas, and hydrogen. Performance targets for Vision 21 plants, example plant configurations, and the key technologies that will be needed are described.

Objective: Workers with hearing loss face special problems, especially when working in noise. How­ever, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal hearing versus impaired hearing. This study col­lected information from workers with self-reported noise exposure and hearing loss, supervisors of such workers, and hearing conservation program managers through focus groups and in-depth inter­views to evaluate their perspectives on the impact of hearing loss on safety and job performance, the use of hearing protection, and information needed to appropriately manage hearing-impaired workers who work in noisy environments. Results: Concerns about working in noise with a hearing loss could be grouped into the following 10 categories: impact on job performance, impact on job safety, impaired ability to hear warning signals, impaired ability to monitor equipment, interfer­ence with communication, stress and/or fatigue, impaired communication caused by hearing protec­tor use, reduced ability to monitor the environment as the result of hearing protector use, concerns about future quality of life, and concerns about future employability. Mostly, there was an agree­ment between the perceptions of workers, supervi­sors, and hearing conservation program managers regarding difficulties associated with hearing loss and consequent needs. These findings suggest that noise-exposed workers with hearing loss face many of the same problems reported in the literature by noise-exposed workers with normal hearing, with additional concerns primarily about job safety as the result of a reduced ability to hear environmental sounds, warning signals, and so forth. Conclusions: The study outlines potential chal­lenges regarding job safety and hearing conserva­tion practices for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Awareness of these issues is a necessary first step toward providing appropriate protective measures for noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Of the 19 million adults in the United States with some degree of hearing trouble, nearly half are currently employed in the workforce (NCHS, 1994). More than 30 million US workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels, and noise-induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in the United States (NIOSH, 1996). Many workers incur their hearing losses during the first 5 to 10 yrs of employment (Rosler, 1994; Ward et al., 2000) and subsequently work the rest of their careers in an environment where noise and hearing loss interact to impair their ability to hear communication and other important signals. Workers with hearing loss who are exposed to hazardous noise levels present a dilemma to hearing loss preventionists. On the one hand, it is of great importance to ensure that their residual hearing is protected from the damaging effects of the noise to which they are exposed. On the other hand, how­ever, traditional hearing protectors serve to further “deafen” such workers, making communication more difficult and impairing the detection of environmen­tal sounds and warning signals. These workers have special needs that must be addressed. However, conventional hearing conservation practices do not distinguish between workers with normal versus impaired hearing; and, to date, no governmental or professional organization has developed specific guidelines or policies concerning the accommodation of noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers. Some research regarding noise-exposed, hearing-impaired workers has been completed. These studies have primarily focused on three areas: (a) speech intelligibility in noise versus quiet, with and without various types of hearing protection devices (Abel et al., 1982; Abel et al., 1993; Abel & Spencer, 1997; Rink, 1979; Suter, 1989); (b) signal detection and localization under similar conditions (Abel et al., 1993; Abel et al., 1985; Abel & Hay, 1996); and (c) the use of hearing aids as hearing protectors (Berger, 1986; Dolan & Maurer, 1996; Hétu et al., 1992; Hétu et al., 1993). Research in these three areas has provided an initial framework for development of a management para­digm for these workers. "INTRODUCTION During September, October, and November 1946 the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines, off' the United States Department of the Interior, Pittsburgh, Pa., tested four new types of self-contained breathing apparatus and approved them in accordance with Schedule 13C. Approval was granted with the proviso that certain specifications outlined on the approval plate be made fully effective, and with the understanding that established safe practices in training in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus are of major importance.The excellent records made during the past 30 years in the safe use of self-contained breathing apparatus, some of which required the almost continuous wearing of apparatus during several hours daily for days, weeks, or months, may be attributed largely to the Bureau's system of rescue organizations, selection of physically fit rescue workers, effective training, and educational work done in rescue and recovery operations during fires or following disasters and in the care and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Loss of life during wearing of breathing apparatus was due almost invariably to poorly assembled or otherwise defective apparatus, poor physical condition of the wearer, or insufficient training or some incorrect procedure.The newly developed breathing apparatus are of much simpler design than the conventional type used for the past several years; however, it is just as important to select rescue crews carefully and to train them properly in the care, use, and limitations of the new types of apparatus as for the older long-established types, if anything like safety is to be achieved in using them. The Bureau of Mines considers that 1/2-hour and 3/4-hour self-contained breathing apparatus should be used only as auxiliary equipment in mine rescue and recovery work, and their capabilities and limitations should be well understood by those who wear them."

Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. "As part of a larger investigation on generation of fines from mining activities and their effect on downstream operations, ore samples from Onaping area stockpiles of Falconbridge Ltd were studied. Batch flotation tests were conducted on the stockpile samples and fresh ore samples to explore the effect of stockpiling on grade-recovery performance. Head grade and particle size distribution of the samples from stockpiles were adjusted so that the samples compared are similar to each other. In additional tests, fresh ore samples were blended with stockpile samples at various percentages, representing 27.4, 50.2 and 81.5% of stockpile samples.The samples from stockpiles produced inferior nickel grade-recovery curves compared to fresh ore. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, while pyrrhotite from stockpiled ore became highly floatable, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite.In the case of blending, there was generally insignificant difference in the nickel grade-recovery between fresh and blended samples when the blending cases involved 27.4 and 50.2% stockpile samples. However, an increase in pyrrhotite recovery was observed for both blending cases. At 81.5% blending case, degraded grade-recovery was significant primarily due to the nearly complete flotation of pyrrhotite. There was a small, but noticeable amount of nickel loss for this case. However, for lower ratios of blending this loss was negligible.The increase in pyrrhotite recovery was partly attributed to its activation by Cu and Ni ions. Formation of a significant amount of elemental sulphur was also apparent from analysis of stockpiled samples. It can be concluded that pyrrhotite is mildly oxidized under stockpiling conditions while part of the pentlandite undergoes a more severe oxidation."

I will talk today about a porphyry copper exploration program now underway in the Amazon jungle in the southeastern part of Ecuador near the border with Peru. The project is unusual for two reasons: first the deposits are of Jurassic age, 153 m.y.o., which is unusually old for porphyry copper deposits and they may be the most significant pre-Tertiary age porphyry deposits known. Second, the district was found only six years ago which makes this the most recent discovery of a totally new porphyry copper district. The new porphyry district, known as the Zamora River Copper Belt, or the Corriente Copper Belt, is a north trending area 50 km long by 10-15 km wide, which is nearly aligned with the axis of the Jurassic age Zamora batholith and with the course of the Zamora river. Gencor in 1994 initiated a regional grassroots gold exploration program based on reconnaissance geologic mapping and geochem sampling which did not find a gold mine, but which identified the San Carlos porphyry copper system in April, 1995. In a later reorganization between Gencore and Billiton the Ecuador project was transferred to Billiton and between the Gencore work and Billiton’s a total of 10 porphyry copper systems were found over the next four years. In the period of 1997 - 1999 Billiton drilled a total of 11,000 meters of wide spaced core holes in the San Carlos, Panantza and Kutukus prospects. In October 1999 Billiton concluded a farm-out, joint venture agreement with Corriente Resources and Lowell Mineral Exploration for additional exploration of the Zamora property. This is funded by Corriente and managed by Lowell Mineral Exploration and a total of 28,000 m of core drilling was completed through August 2001. An immediate result of the Corriente Lowell project was the discovery of potentially commercial ore reserves in two new deposits at Mirador and Warintza. Additional closer spaced drilling was done in the Panantza deposit and additional drilling is planned at San Carlos, in targets related to Warintza, and elsewhere.

The high transverse tensile stresses that develop in precast concrete piles during driving have been investigated experimentally from pile load tests and theoretically using the finite element method (FEM). These tensile stresses can be high enough to cause longitudinal splitting of the piles just below the pile cap. Test data and FEM indicated that the maximum transverse tensile stress will increase with increasing thickness of the cover. The maximum tensile stress can be high especially if the pile is eccentrically loaded. The results from the experimental investigation and from FEM are described in the paper as well as a simplified method based on the stress distribution in a concrete cylinder at an indirect tension test.

El estudio que se ve reflejado en el presente artículo tuvo como objetivo mantener actualizado el mapa metalogenético del Perú y desarrollar conceptos sobre el origen de los yacimientos minerales, basados en datos geocronométricos, geoquímicos, isotópicos, estratigráficos y estructurales, en la Cordillera Occidental entre Ica y Tacna. La zona de investigación comprende las franjas metalogenéticas IV, V, VIII, IX y X. Se destaca el valor de herramientas tales como la litogeoquímica en la discriminación de pórfidos de Cu (Mo-Au) y se muestra la efectividad de nuevos parámetros de elementos traza en la discriminación y reconocimiento de magmatismo fértil vinculado a pórfidos en el sur del Perú.

The problems associated with abandoned minelands are so extensive that neither federal, state, or local governments nor the mining industry nor watershed groups can adequately address these problems individually. By combining talents and resources, however, these problems are being solved efficiently, effectively, and economically. Utilizing existing water monitoring data, local public-private partnerships have successfully designed and built passive systems within five weeks to six months which treat discharges up to hundreds of gallons per minute that vary in quality from net alkaline to highly acidic, containing as much as 200 mg/L dissolved iron and 70 mg/L dissolved aluminum.
