A Máquina de Lingotamento Contínuo nº 1 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão (AMT), com capacidade nominal de 1,8 milhões de toneladas/ano, teve seu start up em 1995. A máquina é curva com raio de 10,5 m. São produzidas placas de 200, 225 e 250 mm, largura de 800 a 1650 mm e velocidade até 1,7 m/min. Em Abril de 2012, a Máquina parou para uma reforma geral. A empresa Italiana Danieli Davy Distington foi contratada para fornecer a engenharia, fabricação e entrega dos equipamentos no período de 12 meses. No ano anterior à parada da máquina, foi realizado um site survey, o que possibilitou a elaboração de um planejamento detalhado de todas as atividades. A reforma da máquina teve como objetivos principais: correção do alinhamento da máquina, substituição de estruturas oxidadas, implantação de novas tecnologias e redução do tempo de exposição dos operadores a ambientes agressivos (alta temperatura, projeção de aço, queda de cascão da panela e material particulado) através da implantação da sala remota de controle dos veios. A máquina foi colocada em operação em 10 de agosto 2012 após ter completado, sem desvios, as fases de instalação e testes. Este trabalho mostra as fases de desenvolvimento deste projeto, os resultados das tecnologias implantadas e os testes de performance para diferentes famílias de aço.

This paper describes the in-situ performance of two IFS powered support installations at Betws and Penallta Collieries in the South Wales Coalfield, United Kingdom. Intensive monitoring of all powered support functions, strata movement, support/strata interaction and coal seam disturbance permitted an extensive evaluation of powered support performance for all periods of the mining cycle. The influence of support design, support rating, face design, proximate strata and scam section upon support and operating performance are discussed. In-situ performance is compared to design specification and to the requirements of Production Instruction 1982/6. Aspects which show significant variation are highlighted. Particular attention is drawn to the precise analysis of support/strata interaction in the form of canopy and base loading profiles. This illustrates the influence of support rating and configuration in determining the interaction of the canopy and base with the proximate strata. Extensometric monitoring of the coalface highlights the potential zones of disturbance within the seam which allied with support position monitoring provides an accurate basis for theoretical considerations of support loading. Conclusions are drawn, the application of which may enhance the performance and operation of IFS supports in thin to medium sections.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted ground pressure analysis of a wide abutment-type chain pillar in a two-entry gate road of a Western U.S. coal mine with an extremely weak immediate roof. About 15 m of fragile, low-strength mudstone lies between the seam and the lowest competent roof member. Three-and two-entry gate road designs with several pillar sizes and various secondary support systems have been employed to improve tailgate-entry stability, with varying results. This report discusses gate road layout and performance and secondary support effectiveness. The results of the pillar pressure study are compared to pillar loading predicted by a widely used pillar design method and to similar studies in other mines. A stability evaluation of the most recent longwall headgate, using the USBM Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) method, indicates marginal stability in first-panel mining and instability in second-panel mining. The ALPS method and the USBM Coal Mine Roof Rating system are used to evaluate tailgate-mining stability of the previous gate roads and to determine pillar and entry width and top coal thickness criteria for tailgate stability in future panels.

Leaching operations combine both metallurgical and hydraulic processes to extract metals from the ore heap. In the design of leaching operations, metallurgical tests and simple hydraulic tests are often conducted to define operational parameters such as leach cycle time, application rate, lift height, and effective leach area. While metallurgical constraints are often the primary focus on leach facility design, the hydraulic factors are also critical to the overall success of the operation. Some of the hydraulic factors that are known to impact solution flow through heaps include: • Ore physical and hydraulic properties, • Variation in ore properties under heap loading, • Ore mineralogy and its susceptibility to chemical and/or mechanical degradation, and • Heterogeneities within the heap. This paper presents a discussion on hydraulic factors that may impact the effectiveness of leaching operations. In addition, methods are presented which may be used to assess flow conditions within active and inactive heaps.

Newmont Gold's methods for deposit modeling vary, depending on geology, mining and processing methods, economic feasibility and availability of historical information. It is argued that successful modeling requires understanding these factors, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling techniques and being flexible in selecting the appropriate methods. Newmont is one of the world's largest gold mining companies, with operations in the United States, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia and Uzbekistan. And it is active in exploration worldwide. At the end of 1996, Newmont declared a total reserve of 1.15 equity kt (37.1 million equity oz) of gold and 2.17 equity Mt (2.39 million st) of copper. The gold deposits managed by Newmont totaled 752 Mt (829 million st) of ore containing 1.28 kt (41.3 million oz) of gold averaging 1.71 g/t (0.05 oz/st). In addition, Newmont is developing a porphyry copper-gold deposit that totals 9.1 Gt (1 billion st) of ore containing 380 t (12.1 million oz) of gold and 4.82 Mt (5.32 million st) of copper. (In May 1997, Newmont Gold Co. merged with Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp., thus increasing Newmont's reserves to 1.72 kt or 55.2 million oz of gold and 2.17 Mt or 2.39 million st of copper.)

"A. larger enrollment and a greater number of man-hours of employment by the enrolled companies were the outstanding features of the National Safety Competition of 1942, an annual safety contest conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, for the promotion of safety among workers in the mines and quarries of the United States. The accident-frequency and accident-severity rates were somewhat higher than in 1941, but the frequency of accidents in relation to the number of man-hours worked was strikingly lower than in the earlier years of the 18-year period during which the contests have been conducted.Companies that enroll in the National Safety Competition compete for a bronze trophy known as the ""Sentinels of Safety."" Six of these trophies are provided by THE EXPLOSIVES ENGINEER annually for award by the Bureau of Mines. The trophies for 1942 wore won by an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, a lignite mine in North Dakota, an underground metal mine in Tennessee, a limestone mine in Ohio, an open-cut metal mine in Minnesota, and a lime-:tone quarry in Pennsylvania. The trophies are presented to the companies for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The contest rules state that a mine or quarry must have at least 25 men employed underground or in the pit for at least 100 days, and the plant must be in operation 30,000 or more man-hours to be eligible for a trophy. The rank of mines and quarries is determined by accident-severity rates, or, in the case of accident-free records, by the number of man-hours worked."

For technical renovation of the thermal plant, one frame structure workshop of 50,000 m2 (59,800 yd2) construction area and one reinforcement concrete chimney of 150m (492 ft) height shall be demolished by blasting at same time. The engineering environment of which is complicated and the accommodation space is limited. Therefore, the collapse sequence, direction, scope of the dismantled building must be accurately controlled to ensure the safe operation of the adjacent generator unit and transformer station. By taking technical measures of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation etc., as well as research on structures collapse method and detailed delay interval, it puts forward the technology of bidirectional folded collapse of the workshop and it uniquely adopts the initiation system that combined with “half-second delay inside drilling” and “millisecond delay outside drilling”. Additionally, by using of the integrated vibration reduction technology in combination of the blasting ruins, buffer ditch and damping ditch, it has safely accomplished the demolition blasting work in high efficiency. Besides the demolition blasting vibration signal is collected and analyzed. The success of the demolition blasting will become valuable reference to other similar works.

"ABSTRACTThe US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has 704 dams in their inventory and over 100,000 miles of levees with a capital value of over $150 billion. Currently, there are 319 dams that are classified as high hazard and have actionable failure modes that will require structural modifications. The most frequent actionable failure mode associated with the inventory is seepage and piping. One of the most effective engineering solutions is the installation of a cutoff to limit seepage. Currently, USACE has over $1.5 Billion of cutoff wall projects under construction and/or design. Given the magnitude of the dam and levee safety issues, USACE is developing a new Engineering Manual (EM) titled “Seepage Control Cutoffs for Dams and Levees.” This EM covers all of the methods to construct cutoff walls. USACE has partnered with the Deep Foundation Institute (DFI) in preparation of the EM to ensure that it is comprehensive and draws from the expertise of the specialty foundation engineering companies that design, manufacture, and construct seepage control cutoffs around the world. The EM contains case histories as well as a comprehensive project statistical summary and guide specification paragraphs. The goal of USACE was to make the EM a state of the art document for use by Districts.HISTORYSlurry wall construction techniques were developed in the late 1940’s in Italy by ICOS. The first use of the slurry trench method of construction in the United States was by the USACE Memphis District in September 1945, to form a partial cutoff along the Mississippi River levee on the Arkansas side of the river just below Memphis, Tennessee. The idea for the project probably evolved from the use at that time of puddle clay trench cutoffs combined with the use of drilling mud for advancing borings. A paddle wheel mixing device was constructed for making slurry from native clays. Trenches were dug to a 20-ft depth using a trenching machine and to a 35-ft depth using a dragline with a 100-ft boom and 2-cu-yd bucket. Backfill was mixed in windrows at the site from hauled-in clay gravel and native materials and pushed into the trench by a bulldozer when the length of the trench was equal to about twice the trench depth. It is amazing that after almost 70 years, the technique is still about the same as it was when first developed by the Memphis District. A soilbentonite cutoff was constructed under the Kennewick Levee adjacent to the Columbia River as part of the McNary Dam Project in Washington by the Walla Walla District in 1952 The first application of a soil-bentonite slurry trench cutoff for control of underseepage at a major earth dam was at Wanapum Dam on the Columbia River in Washington in 1959.The first cement- bentonite cutoff in the United States was constructed at the Tilden Tailings Project to store tailings from the Tilden Mine in Michigan in 1976. The first cement-bentonite cutoff constructed at a dam on a river retaining a reservoir in the United States was completed in 1978 at the Elgo Dam (formerly the San Carlos Dam) in Arizona.The USACE has designed and constructed some of the deepest and most complex cutoff walls for dams since the 1970’s. The first major concrete panel cutoff wall constructed in a dam in the United States was at Wolf Creek Dam (Nashville District) by the ICOS Corporation between 1974-77. The dam has a long history of seepage issues associated with the karst geology that comprises the foundation. In 1968, about 17 years after first being impounded, wet areas, muddy flows in the tailrace and sinkholes in the downstream toe adjacent to the switchyard occurred."

Sulphide ion is a powerful poison in gold cyanidation, however, the detrimental effect is less severe in plant practice. This is thought to be due to the presence of depassivating elements in the ore, mainly lead. Trace amounts of lead can counteract the poisonous effect of considerable amounts of sulphide. The reaction is instantaneous and is likely to be a direct involvement in the electrochemical surface reaction. Lead addition cannot be regarded as an all-round cure when experiencing poor leach efficiencies. A possible beneficial effect depends on the mineralogy of the ore and has to be determined individually for every material.

"The Goldex mining and milling complex is operated by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. and is located in the Abitibi greenstone belt of Northwest Quebec, Canada. The mill operates presently at a throughput of 8,250 tpd with gold grade varying between 1.8 and 2.2 g/t. The ore is very high in gravity recoverable gold (GRG) at about 92% and as such a significant emphasis was placed on the gravity circuit. Commercial production started in 2008. Average gold recovery is 93.5% with about 68% of gold recovery coming from the gravity circuit. Over the course of the first several years of production, several gravity audits were carried out. In 2009, a complete gravity audit was completed, including ore, classification, Knelson Concentrators, and the gold room. In 2011, an audit was undertaken of the flotation circuit to determine the efficiency by which GRG is floated. Large samples of flotation feed and tails were collected and process for GRG content. This allowed a link between gravity and overall recovery to be made. This paper presents results of the audits and the development of a model linking gravity and overall gold"

Arrium’s magnetite concentrator has recently completed a modification program to improve the process that has been in operation in Whyalla, South Australia for the previous seven years. The magnetite concentrate is pumped via pipeline to the coast and serves as pellet plant feed, eventually being turned into steel in the Whyalla blast furnace. With the addition of a new 3MW IsaMill at the concentrator, the plant has seen increased production from a reduced feed grade, enabling Arrium to treat ores previously stockpiled as waste. This paper will focus on the design work and commissioning of the fine grinding circuit along with the year of optimisation that followed, taking the IsaMill up to 350+ tph of throughput.CITATION:Larson, M, Anderson, G, Mativenga, M and Stanton, C, 2015. The Huntington Beach oil field is on the Pacific Coast, southeast of the City of Los Angeles (Fig. 1). It lies both onshore and offshore. Most of the onshore section is operated by Standard Oil Co. of California, WOI. The Tar reservoir is of upper Pliocene age, about 200 ft thick, and consists principally of fine-grained, unconsolidated, somewhat shaly sand, with thin inter-bedded shale stringers throughout (Fig. 2). The reservoir is a broad, highly faulted, elongated anticline, with an areal extent of about 370 acres. Most of the faults bisecting the structure are normal, trend north-south, and are the main cause of reservoir discontinuity (Figs. 3 and 4). From 1964 to Dec., 1967, 259 steam stimulations were performed on a total of 125 Tar sand wells. Eighty-six new wells were drilled and steam stimulated. Of the total, 96 have been stimulated twice, 34 three times and 3 four times. During this same period, a two-injector steam drive pilot has been in progress. The response obtained from this project has been compared with the response to cyclic stimulation. This paper presents an analysis of the field observations for the two methods of thermal recovery. History of Development Drilling to the Tar pool commenced in 1924 with an initial well production of 40 to 50 B/D of 12o API gravity oil. Complete primary development of the pool has been spread over several years. Approxi- mately 40 wells were drilled during the first phase of development, which was completed in 1945. The subsequent primary development started in 1960 with initial well productions of 30 to 40 B/D oil. Thirty-seven wells were completed in the Tar pool during this phase. For the most part, slotted, gravel flow packed liners have been used in the wells in this pool. A cyclic steam stimulation pilot was initiated in March, 1964. Based on the very successful stimulation in the pilot area, the cyclic stimulation project was expanded to include all of the Tar pool wells producing at the end of 1965 (Fig. 5). Also, a development drilling program was begun at this time. To date, 86 new wells have been drilled under this program. The number of wells drilled each year in this secondary phase of development is also shown in Fig. 5. New Well Completion Practices Most of the new wells have been completed to produce from both the Upper and Lower Tar zones. Generally, a casing stub is cemented from the top of Lower Tar to the base of clean Upper Tar sands to exclude intermediate water-bearing sands. The water string is then cemented from the top of Upper Tar to about 1,500 ft with neat cement and 30 percent silica flour. The annulus from 1,500 ft to surface is then filled with a petroleum-based gel through a high-temperature port collar. "Abstract This paper shows that a raft alone is not sufficiently appropriate to address the uncertainty of underlying soil variability; therefore, a piled raft system is a better option for mitigating such uncertainty. To study the variability of soil, the behavior of the Piled-Raft Foundation was analyzed with a type of self-drilling micropiles: the ""Alluvial Anker"" (common name for this pile type in Brasilia city). These micropiles have been used in the city and have the advantage that the drill pipe also serves as reinforcement. The studied parameters belong to an elastoplastic constitutive model for strain-stress analysis of soil; variability of these parameters can be intrinsic and/or epistemic. Simulations were performed for a hypothetical Piled-Raft Foundation subjected to vertical loading using the random finite element method. The average parameters of the constitutive model were obtained through laboratory tests. The simulations of the load test were compared with results of a real scale experimental test conducted exclusively for this work in the field. It is analyzed the relative importance of the variability of some geomechanical parameters and their variation with depth is considered. In addition, it is discussed a comparison between the uncertainty of the geomechanical parameters and the uncertainty of the results of the vertical loading test. Finally, this paper shows that a decrease of the safety factor may occur when taking into account the variability of the parameters.IntroductionBrasilia is located in a highly weathered residual tropical soil (lateritic & latossol on pedogenetic concepts). This soil presents high content of alumina and iron due to the lixiviation process of the upper layers. As a consequence, the cemented structure is highly unstable and it can generate strong changes of volume (i.e. collapse) due to changes in both moisture and state of stresses. Therefore, a greater understanding of the construction of Piled-Raft Foundation systems on this particular soil conditions is needed – especially because it covers more than 80% of the surface area of the Brazilian Federal District.Thereafter, this work investigates the influence of the variability of the soil parameters over the uncertainty of the Piled-Raft Foundation design. The studied parameters belong to an elastoplastic constitutive model for strain-stress analysis of soils. The simulations were performed for two hypothetical Piled-Raft Foundations subjected to vertical loading by using the stochastic finite element method. The results were compared to real load tests in Piled-Rafts with “Alluvial Anker” pile types."

Blast vibration in the highwall from a cast blast in open pit mines or in the hanging walls from a stope blast in underground mines is a common concern. Vibration in such cases is a typical near-field situation where the distance from a blasthole to a point of interest varies significantly compared to the distance between the blast as a whole and the point of interest. Most existing blast vibration models are designed for far-field vibration using a single seed wave to represent all blastholes within a blast and do not simulate wave shape change over the distance.

Longwall mining of thin shallow coal seams utilizing open pits is technically feasible. The thinnest coal seam which can be mined using available technology is 34 inches. The capital expenditure for a 1,000,000 ton per year operation is $15,494,000, and the projected rate of return is 5 percent. Similar statistics for a conventional area surface mine are S18,937,000 capital and 14 percent rate of return. The longwall surface mining method disturbs 63 acres of land per 1,000,000 tons, and the conventional area surface mine disturbs 198 acres A significant bibliography of the technology involved is included.

Up until 1990 CoalCorp North Island's accident record was six times that considered acceptable in those NSW operations with good accident prevention programmes. This was an obvious avoidable burden on the company in both human and cost terms.   Late in 1989 an accident prevention programme was implemented with the objective of achieving a 50 per cent reduction in the lost time accident frequency rate within 12 months. The key to achieving this objective was recognised as being an attitude change in the total workforce from General Manager downward. Management commitment and action were seen to be critical to the success of the programme.   Through very basic and simple training programmes in accident investigation, analysis and reporting, communication, on-the-job coaching and in focusing on improving supervision skills, the original objective was achieved.   During 1991 the application of methods improvement and hazard recognition techniques are seen as the logical step to achieving a further 50 per cent reduction in the accident frequency rate.

The causes of ferrosilicon loss from Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants, and the related properties of ferrosilicon, are identified. Two characteristics, corrosion resistance and saturation magnetisation, are examined in detail. The chemistry of the corrosion mechanism is described and its relationship to plant parameters discussed. Methods of reducing corrosion losses are proposed. Lack of particle homogeneity, and its influence on corrosion and abrasion is noted. The relationship between low magnetic susceptibility-and increased magnetic separator losses is demonstrated experimentally.

Faced with a severe disposal problem of their fines from a coal mine in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of extreme eastern Kentucky, Eastern Coal Corporation has built a special plant to pelletize the fines into high quality coal pellets meeting the requirements of the metallurgical market. These low-ash, low-sulfur pellets measuring 3/4 x 3/8 in. contain less than 1.5% moisture and have the same stability as raw coal of the same size. Although Eastern Coal is mining 6000 tpd, the company had, until recently, no provision to recover the fine coal which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12-acre refuse pond. The pond, impounded behind the coarse refuse dump, rose 15 ft last year and obviously no pond can stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method.

The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national priorities.

Large reserves of feldspar ore exist in the Aegean region of Turkey. The main colored impurities in these ores are iron- and titanium-bearing minerals such as anatase, rutile, sphene and ilmenite. In this study, a potassium feldspar ore containing mainly quartz and coloring impurities was subjected to beneficiation tests involving magnetic separation and flotation, which were applied either separately or in combination. Bench-scale flotation experiments using cationic collectors G-TAP and Flotigam V-4343 and using HF and H2SO4 as modifiers were employed to separate feldspar from quartz and to remove part of the titanium impurities. The best results were achieved with a combination of high-intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation. A feldspar concentrate containing 16.28% Al2O3, 10.75% K2O, 2.84% Na2O, 69.97% SiO2 and 0.16% Fe2O3 was produced. A quartz concentrate containing 2.30% Al2O3, 0.48% K2O, 0.42% Na2O, 0.07% Fe2O3 and 96.20% SiO2 was also obtained
