Particle morphology is a term that is used to describe the overall external shape and appearance of particulate solids. From the physical point of view, a precipitated solid is characterized primarily by the size and morphology of the particles (Sohnel andGarside, 1992). If the morphology of the crystal structures is to be related to the processing conditions, then the morphologies need to be quantified in some way. This can be achieved by using surface area measurements as well as fractal dimensions. The key idea is that rugged and indeterminate systems can be described by using a fractional number that describes the ruggedness of the system (Kaye, 1989). In other words, when the complexity of a structure, such as an agglomerate, increases with increasing magnification, it is useful to employ fractal dimensions to describe the structure. Fractal geometry proposes that, instead of attempting to measure the length of an irregular boundary, the rate at which the length of the boundary approaches infinity with increasing resolution should be calculated. Cross-sectional profiles of rugged particles can thus be quantified using the fractal dimension, and a measurement of the ruggedness of the morphology obtained. One of the additional uses of measuring the fractal dimension is that the measured value can be related to the physical properties and formation characteristics of the particle (Kaye and Trottier,1995). The morphology of nickel crystals was quantified with fractal dimension calculations of particle cross-sections. Particle cross-sections were obtained by mounting the particles in resin and polishing back. These were then photographed using Scanning Electron Microscopy and the resulting profiles analysed using the structured walk technique.

This Bureau of Mines report describes 147 known fluorspar deposits in New Mexico and briefly mentions 54 miscellaneous occurrences for which little or no information was obtained. Most miscellaneous occurrences are minor and too poorly exposed to be considered more than prospects. History and production of fluorspar in New Mexico, type of deposition, mineralogy, uses, and grade specifications are discussed. Total mine production of fluorspar in New Mexico is nearly 641,000 tons of various grades of crude ore and hand-sorted material. Fluorspar deposits occur in 13 of the state's 32 counties. Grant, Valencia, and Luna Counties account for 86.4 percent of the total production. During the investigation, 141 deposits were visited. A total of 72 character samples was collected for assay, and 3 larger samples were collected for bench-scale metallurgical tests. Results of these metallurgical tests indicate that an acid-grade product can be obtained with 95 percent recovery of the CaF2 content of the crude ore.

Ao final do processamento termomecânico nos laminadores do tipo Steckel, a tira laminada, já com sua espessura final, é submetida ao resfriamento controlado que geralmente é feito por uma cadeia regulável de aspersores de água. Este resfriamento promove as transformações de fases desejadas para que a microestrutura final do produto laminado confira a ele propriedades mecânicas adequadas para desempenhar com qualidade as funções de aplicação. Neste contexto, o conhecimento dos efeitos da composição química do aço sobre a cinética de transformação de fases possibilitará a adequação de parâmetros operacionais do laminador e do sistema de resfriamento. Reconhecendo a importância deste aspecto, este trabalho estudou a influência da composição química sobre a cinética de transformação de fases dos aços LNE 380 e API X65. Os dois aços foram submetidos a ensaios dilatométricos, metalográficos e de dureza. Ao final do estudo, concluiu-se que, comparados aos efeitos do Nb e Ti, o teor de Mn parece ser o fator com maior influência sobre as temperaturas de início e final tanto de austenitização como de decomposição da austenita durante o resfriamento contínuo. O aumento controlado no teor de Mn possivelmente potencializa o refinamento da microestrutura na etapa de resfriamento.

The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.

As indústrias de cerâmica vermelha têm grande importância na região assim como a mineração e beneficiamento de calcário laminado representam um importante segmento econômico do Estado do Ceará, entretanto produzem uma grande quantidade de resíduos, que poluem e agridem o meio ambiente. Assim, esse trabalho tem por objetivo a caracterização da incorporação do resíduo da Pedra Cariri avaliando sua aplicabilidade como matéria-prima cerâmica alternativa para a produção de telhas cerâmicas. Foram formuladas composições contendo o resíduo e confeccionados corpos-de-prova por prensagem. Os corpos-de-prova foram queimados e, em seguida, foram determinados a cor após a queima, perda ao fogo, retração linear, absorção de água, porosidade aparente e o módulo de ruptura à flexão. Obteve-se uma com avermelhada, com um tom mais claro nas que tiveram a pedra cariri na massa. Também foi visto uma porosidade, juntamente com uma absorção em nível aceitável para tijolos cerâmicos e a tensão de ruptura aumentou em 5% e decaiu em 10%. Após todos os testes feitos, provou-se que o resíduo tem a possibilidade de ser usado na incorporação de até 5% de resíduo em formulações para a produção de telhas cerâmicas.

Drilling in the south of the Rapahoe Sector at Greymouth Coalfield has demonstrated the existence of thick coal seams in the upper Rewanui Member. Seam correlation is handicapped by complex lithostratigraphy and laterally variable geophysical log profiles. An integrated investigation of coal measure stratigraphy, coal petrology, and proximate analyses, suggests a feasible model whereby most of the major seam intersections belong to a single horizon. Coal properties vary laterally in response to original swamp conditions, which are believed to have ranged from well-drained to ponded. A new model of peat accumulation is proposed for the northern Rapahoe Sector, whereby Upper Rewanui peat accumulation occurred on a flood plain between the levees of a major south southwest-flowing fluvial system in the east and the toe of a western alluvial fan.

El presente texto describe la evolución tectónica y metalogenética de la litósfera del Sur peruano donde la corteza está formada por diferentes bloques estructurales yuxtapuestos, cada uno de los cuales tiene su propia evolución sedimentaria, tectónica, magmática y metalogenética. Asimismo, se han determinado cinco bloques, tres de loscuales forman el Macizo de Arequipa y los otros dos, son parte del Altiplano. Estos bloques se han acretado al borde de Sudamérica hace unos 1,000 Ma. Los límites de estos grandes bloques están marcados por complejos sistemas de fallas, en algunos casos también por unidades magmáticas y además por depósitos minerales asociados. Estos bloques estructurales condicionaron la paleogeografía mesozoica, que a su vez controló la evolución andina, y por lo tanto la distribución de depósitos minerales tan complejo como el mismo substrato. En consecuencia, la identificación de estos límites o grandes estructuras, permite definir mejor los dominios geotectónicos o metalogenéticos.

Large quantities of gasoline are lost each year by evaporation from bulk-storage station tanks. The rate of evaporation from bulk-station tanks is influenced by two principal factors: First, the vapor pressure of the gasoline in the tank; and second, the amount of "breathing" of the tank. The vapor pressures of the gasoline govern the amount of the gasoline vapor in the air-vapor mixture above the gasoline in a tank at a given temperature. This is one of the principal factors in determining the total pressure of the air-vapor mixture within the tank. The "breathing" of the tank is caused by the inflow of air from the atmosphere during certain periods of the day and the expulsion of the air-vapor mixtures at other times, caused by atmospheric variations. The pressure built up within a tank and the amount of gasoline in the air-vapor mixture are both a direct function of the temperature existing within the tank. Therefore, two of the most common methods for reducing evaporation losses from bulk-station tanks are: (1) The use of vapor-tight tanks equipped with relief valves and operated at 1 or 2 ounces of pressure and about 1/2-ounce vacuum; (2) reducing the temperature of tanks and their contents by painting them a light color, by insulation, and in some instances by using water sprays. Water sprays, although effective, usually are too expensive to operate economically. In order to determine and compare the effects of various colors, insulation, and pressure in reducing the evaporation losses of gasoline held in storage in bulk-storage tanks, the Bureau of Mines made observations from May 29 to October 15. 1930, on five horizontal tanks of 12,000-gallon capacity each, which were erected at the plant of Black. Sivalls and Bryson Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, Mo. This report gives in detail the results of these evaporation tests.

This report presents the results of an investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the State of Colorado, on the yields and properties of oils produced from oil shale, lignite and subbituminous coal using the standard assay method developed by the Bureau for oil-shale testing,. The purpose of this work, which is part of the general study of oil shales being conducted by the Bureau of Mines and cooperating agencies, was to obtain information on the amount and character of the yield of crude oil or tar from different typical oil shales, the yield of light oil or naptha that might be suitable for use in motor fuels, and other products of shale oil. As the west has large resources both of oil shale and low-grade non-coking coals, it is of interest to know the relative yields of tars, light oils, and combustible gases that can be produced from these coals when retorted under conditions similar to those suited for oil-shale retorting. Source of Samples The coal samples were obtained from deposits on or adjacent to the public lands in the States of the Rocky Mountain region. Many of the mines sampled are operating under Government leases or permits. The number of coal samples secured from the various states are: Colorado, 6; Montana, 9; north Dakota, 6; New Mexico. 1; South Dakota, 1; Wyoming, 9. Of these samples, 14 were lignite coal, 16 subbituminous coal, and a bituminous coal. The standard channel method of the Bureau of Mines was used for sampling. Coal samples received at the Boulder Office weighed about twelve pounds each, and duplicate samples were sent to the Pittsburgh Station for proximate and ultimate analyses. The origin of the samples and description of the deposits are given in Table 1.

Maintaining ground stability in the gate roads, particularly the tailgate, has always been critical to the success of longwall mining, both in terms of safety and productivity. Several new support technologies have been developed in recent years to replace conventional wood and concrete cribbing for secondary roof support. Since their performance characteristics are unique, the best practices that have been developed with conventional wood cribbing may not be applicable for these alternative support technologies. Therefore, with so many options to consider and the importance of achieving adequate ground control at minimal cost, the trial-and-error approach to longwall gate road support is no longer prudent. This paper discusses a design methodology for standing secondary tailgate supports. This design technique requires in-mine measurements of tailgate support loading and convergence to establish a tailgate ground reaction behavior based on support and strata interaction. The methodology uses the performance characteristics generated in the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to match the stiffness and load characteristics of various supports to the measured ground reaction behavior. It can be used to determine the appropriate application of alternative roof support systems or to design in-mine trials so that a fair and equitable comparison of different support systems can be made. A case study of the methodology at a western Pennsylvania mine site is presented in the paper, including a comparison of four alternative support technologies to the conventional wood and concrete cribbing historically used at this particular mine.

This paper presents the ground settlement monitoring system used during the construction of two tunnels bored by two EPB TBMs, beneath the existing and active railway embankment in Bologna (Italy). The tunnels run close to large buildings and beneath bridges and other infrastructure. Data are collected from remote total stations and from electro levels installed directly on the railway tracks. The automated monitoring system acquires and analyses data then sounds an alarm in the event that there is a problem. Alarms are sent out in case of excessive tilt or settlement. Data is provided through a dedicated web application for multiple-party access, to gather, manage and store monitoring data.

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." With the rapid expansion of our industrialised society in recent years the demand for minerals has grown to such an extent that uncertainties about availability and cost have arisen, especially in the case of energy minerals.Minerals have acquired a new dimension for governments as the availability of these resources is interwoven with the ability of governments to achieve their developmental goals on national and international levels. Accordingly, the supply of minerals will increasingly be affected by social and political factors.

Post-tertiary training programmes have been designed and produced for geologists at different levels of understanding and expertise in the relationship between gold mineralization and shear zones. A workshop format was used as it allowed both clients and facilitators to participate in the learning process. Evaluation by facilitators and participants refined the workshop programme as an effective skills oriented learning process. The general observation is that post-tertiary training in small, interactive, practical, learning oriented groups is far better than lecture oriented short courses for developing skills based learning. The evaluation indicates that the process in post-tertiary training must include aspects which are both useful and used.

O processo de retificação é empregado na fabricação de componentes que requerem excelente qualidade dimensional com elevado acabamento superficial. O desempenho deste processo depende muito das condições de lubri-refrigeração produzidas pelos fluidos de corte, que são utilizados para amenizar os problemas que afetam a integridade superficial das peças, como queima e danos microestruturais, e também proporcionar melhor desempenho do processo e aumento da vida útil do rebolo. Entretanto, os fluidos de corte são uma das fontes mais problemáticas na manufatura, pois são produtos nocivos ao meio ambiente e a saúde humana, e aparecem como elemento determinante para a otimização do processo de fabricação. Desta maneira, este projeto visa analisar o comportamento do fluido de corte integral comercial em comparação com formulações biodegradáveis (óleos de soja e milho) no processo de retificação cilíndrica externa de mergulho no aço ABNT 4340 temperado e revenido com dureza média de 52 HRc. A avaliação do desempenho dos fluidos consistiu na análise da integridade superficial (rugosidade, microestrutura e microdureza) e no desgaste do rebolo. Os resultados comprovaram a eficiência dos óleos vegetais e viabilidade do uso no processo de retificação, proporcionando melhoria na eficiência do processo e contribuindo para uma manufatura ecologicamente correta.

Os cilindros de laminação sempre foram ferramentas utilizadas para estudos e desenvolvimentos técnicos em laminadores, uma vez que uma instabilidade em seu consumo pode indicar alterações ou problemas no processo. Especificamente nos laminadores de tiras a frio a instabilidade representada pelo aumento no consumo dos cilindros de trabalho indica alterações no processo, na matéria-prima ou até mesmo na qualidade do próprio cilindro. Na Laminação a Frio de Cubatão já foram realizados diversos trabalhos com foco na redução de consumo de cilindros, por se tratar de um insumo de custo elevado e influência direta na qualidade do material produzido. Com o mercado consumidor de aços planos cada vez mais exigente, foi necessário desenvolver novas qualidades de aço com resistências elevadas, espessuras menores e tolerâncias dimensionais mais restritas. Para atingir este nível de exigência tornou-se necessário o investimento em equipamentos modernos, e, sobretudo, promover alterações nos processos de fabricação para a sua adequação. São estas alterações que visam atender tais exigências que podem contribuir para o aumento do consumo de cilindros. Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as principais causas relacionadas ao aumento do consumo dos cilindros e buscar soluções para sua estabilização.

A simulação da evolução microestrutural, durante a etapa de acabamento, na laminação de tiras a quente de aços carbono, através do software DEFORMTM3D, foi estudada para prever a carga de laminação, distribuição de temperatura, de deformação e de tamanho de grão. A boa concordância dos valores da carga e temperatura na simulação com os valores da literatura, mostra que o presente modelo é viável para representar o processo de laminação. A deformação acumulada próximo à superfície foi maior quando comparada a da região central da tira laminada, indicando uma distribuição heterogênea da deformação, que diminui com a evolução do processo. O aumento da fração de recristalização dinâmica (DRX) e a diminuição do tamanho de grão foram mais significativos nos primeiros passes. Além disso, houve uma fração de DRX maior e um tamanho de grão menor próximo a superfície da tira, esta diferença no tamanho de grão, no sentido da espessura, também diminuiu com a evolução do processo. Estes resultados sugerem que múltiplos passes podem diminuir a não homogeneidade microestrutural da tira. Assim, este estudo mostra a eficácia do modelo microestrutural em predizer o comportamento do material em um processo de laminação a quente.

"Ground Water or Pore water pressure development in Sandy Soil formation is Critical situation in foundation analysis and design.Moreover it become severe while associated with higher liquefaction probability in river bank areas. It is difficult to find cost optimized solution for liquefaction mitigation under limited budget allocated for the project. Here in these research paper the attempt has been made to have clear picture of liquefaction by using various techniques and field tests. And its mitigation by suitable foundation type. In Bangladesh, On Bank of River Meghana, Power plant structures are proposed. The particular site is full of fine sand having partial silt throughout from EGL to 55 m depth. Hence in addition to Conventional Boring / Drilling operations, CPLT, SCPT, SCHT and PMT had been performed to arrive deterministic effect of liquefaction. By use of Geologismiki software and some excel based programs developed which indicates that Certainly liquefaction occurs under the event of earthquake. By Checking past records of Bangladesh we found, there are small magnitude earthquakes are inevitable and frequent. Hence fourth to overcome the bad effect of liquefaction, the deep pile foundation -Driven Pre Cast Solid Square Pile of 400 mm dia. had been suggested for various types of power plant structures. Which densify the soil and ground will improve in resisting liquefaction.1. INTRODUCTIONA Detailed Geotechnical/Foundation design Analysis had been done to arrive at optimum foundation design solution in highly probable liquefaction zone of Silty Fine Sand near Dhaka City of Bangladesh for proposed 750 MW Cyclic Power Plant. Hence about 24 no. of (Borehole) Boring and Drilling up to depth of 55 m from existing ground level has been carried out. Additionally, 09 nos. of Static Cone Penetration Test (SCPT), 02 Nos. of Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT), 02 Nos. of Pressure meter test (PMT), 02 nos. of Cyclic Plate load test (CPLT) of suitable capacity with 06 nos. of Seismic Cross Hole Test (SCHT) in boreholes had been carried out. The purpose of PMT and SCHT was to have clear idea about the Seismic behavior - knowhow of site. According to Basic principles of Soil Mechanics and foundation design, it is proved that PMT & SCHT are dynamic test. These tests stimulate field condition of occurrences of earthquake. In later stages of analysis, it is found that site have high probability of liquefaction through use of Geologismiki – Liquefaction Analysis Software.
