El presente texto señala las diversas metodologías adoptadas para la evaluación del impacto visual de la industria extractiva en Asturias (Norte de España) mediante el empleo de las herramientas SIG. Para ello, se evaluaron individualmente el impacto visual de tres canteras de diferente tamaño y morfología, de forma que se obtuvieron las longitudes y superficies aparentemente visibles desde cualquier punto. Así también se analizó la competencia de utilizar el campo visual ocupado por la cantera, el cual se ha calculado a partir del ángulo sólido. Finalmente, se muestran los resultados de las 98 explotaciones a cielo abierto ubicadas en la región y que son adquiridos a partir del modelo digital de elevaciones de resolución 5 m y de los contornos de las zonas explotadas.

This project was proposed to provide information on the hazards associated with arc melting of thorium. A general air-sampling analysis was made to determine the separation, concentration, and distribution of thorium daughter (decay) products throughout arc melting, machining, and forging processes of a thorium handling facility. The value of well coordinated health physics program is stressed in connection with potential health hazards and personnel protection. Building, equipment, and exhaust ventilation requirements for such a facility are discussed. Special handling methods are described for thorium. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center has been involved in handling the naturally radioactive metals, uranium and thorium, for several years. Cooperative work for the Atomic Energy Commission has been carried out with thorium metal, and as a result the concerned laboratories of the Center have accumulated experience on the hazards associated with this metal. This report details the radioactive hazards arising from the arc melting, machining, and forging of thorium.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Shallow rainfall-induced landslides in residual and colluvial hillslopes and steep embankments are a common occurrence in many settings [1, 2, 3]. While occasionally posing a threat to property and life-safety, they more often present an ongoing maintenance problem and can lead to the initiation of larger failures. Typically, these slides consist of 2 to 4-foot thick translational movements of silty and clayey soils down slope through the reduction of strength from increases in pore water pressures. Direct surficial infiltration and indirect groundwater seepage are the normative triggers for failure. In the residential community of Blackhawk, California, located east of the San Francisco Bay, these types of landslides are a common occurrence (Figure 1). However, shallow landslides have also been a repetitive and constant problem along many state highways where steep embankments have been constructed in close proximity to busy thoroughfares. Given the real threat to property values in residential and commercial settings and the constant maintenance problem posed to lifeline structures such as utilities, roadways, and pipelines, new methods to deal with these landslides are needed.

Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.

Driven 14-inch-square concrete piles were used as the foundations of Genentech Hall at the new University of California, San Francisco Mission Bay Campus. The five-story, steel eccentrically-braced frame building is currently under construction at a 43-acre property located in a former large shallow marshy inlet from San Francisco Bay. The piles were driven through 10 to 25 feet of fill and 20 to 60 feet of soft compressible Bay Mud into an underlying dense sand layer. Pile design capacities were developed for traditional allowable stress design, load factor and resistance design, and ultimate design criteria. The ultimate level capacities were for checks of loads occurring when the links in the eccentrically-braced frame yield during an earthquake. A load test program was performed to confirm pile design recommendations. Two test pile locations were selected for compression, tension, and lateral load tests to evaluate pile capacity and pile/soil stiffness under long-term, short-term and rapid loading conditions. Maximum test loads were 1000 kips downward, 350 kips uplift and 50 kips lateral. Foundation construction began by driving 34 indicator piles with a Delmag D46-32 diesel hammer of 113 foot-kips maximum rated energy. All indicator piles were monitored during initial driving using the Pile Driving Analyzer. Restrike data, obtained several days after initial driving, indicated significant pile-soil setup and typical pile capacity increases from 750 to 1000 kips. The majority of the 1242 production piles were then driven to acceptance criteria of 75 blows per foot and a minimum embedment of 10 feet into the dense sand bearing layer. Piles driven to full length without achieving the blowcount criteria were evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Acceptance of these piles was established by evaluating restrike data.

This work is a continuation of a paper presented in the 32nd DFI Annual Conference, Colorado 2007, titled ?Hollow Core Bar Micropiles - Design parameters interpreted from 260 load tests.? The first paper presented the results of the verification and proof tests performed for the retrofit of two bridges with hollow core bars that used 260 micropiles. It included an interpretation of the unit bond values in the different soils where micropiles were installed. Recently two additional bridges within the same geological environment were also retrofitted using 144 hollow core micropiles. This paper includes the interpretation of the additional data from the proof tests performed and refines recommended values for design of hollow core bar micropiles in soils similar to those encountered in these two projects. The authors believe that the data collected will significantly add to the relatively small existing database on micropile tests and may also be useful during implementation of the LRFD design methodology.

Carbon dioxide sequestration by conversion to carbonates has become a promising option for CO2 storage. Experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of CO2 sequestration at ambient conditions using a Ca-rich industrial waste in a carbonate solution. The Ca-rich industrial waste used in this study was lignite fly ash. Fly ash was chosen because it is cheap, available near large CO2 point sources, already in powder form, and reactive due to amorphous properties. In the experimental set-up, CO2 absorption was inferred by monitoring feed and exhaust gas CO2 concentrations. The addition of an alkali to a fly ash-distilled water solution provided a 50% increase in CO2 absorption of the solution. Absorption time also increased by 50% compared to a fly ash-distilled water solution. TGA analysis was used to determine the extent of CO2 sequestration in the carbonate form. At a liquid to solid ratio of 20:1, the conversion of ?free? calcium to carbonates was 75%. A CO2 balance on the system concluded that at the current operating conditions 42% of the total CO2 fed to the system was sequestered in the carbonate form. SEM-EDS analysis of the fly ash particles before and after reaction with CO2 indicated that the carbonate compound being formed was calcium carbonate. The analysis identified rhomboidal structures on the surface of the fly ash particles after reaction with CO2, but not before. These rhomboids are characteristic of calcium carbonate formation and they had higher Ca, C, and O concentrations than the host spheres, suggesting calcium carbonate formation.

Noise from vibrating screens is generated in two ways: 1) Noise due to the material being processed and, 2) noise from the screen itself. Non-metallic decks had been shown previously to reduce material noise. The noise reduction and change in screening performance was quantified for six non-metallic decks using dolomite, granite and coal as the materials. The non-metallic decks were from 2 to 7 dBA quieter and from -1 to +10 percent less efficient as compared to a steel wire cloth deck of the same open area. Damping of the sidewalls and isolation of the drive mechanisms had been shown, in a development configuration, to reduce the noise of the screen itself. Tests of four prototype damping treatments gave reductions up to 4.9 dBA and the mechanism isolators gave an additional 2.1 dBA. The treatments were successfully life tested in two ways: 1) Lab tests to a simulated 25,000 hours were conducted on samples of the treatments in a corrosive salt spray to simulate coal plant wash water and, 2) the full size treatments were run on a full size screen for 5,000 hours.

Minerals have played a prominent role in the affairs of man and nations since time immemorial but with the advent of the industrial revolution, expanding use of the products of the mineral kingdom became synonymous with the material progress of mankind. Individuals and business groups have recognized this fact so have been aggressive in searching for and utilizing mineral resources, with notable success. Indeed, their achievements are primarily responsible for the present Machine Age. On the other hand, until recently the body politic has failed to grasp fully the essentiality of minerals although, at times, access to mineral supplies has been an important factor in the political maneuvers of nations. This chapter is concerned primarily with the broader political and economic relationships of mineral resources to the world economy, and with the internal and external actions of nations in the field of minerals. Many factors that condition the mineral economy of regions and the world as a whole, influence the internal and external affairs of individual nations. The more important of these are: 1. The nature of man's dependence on minerals. 2. The problems resulting from the unique characteristics of mineral occurrence. 3. Geopolitical concepts. 4. Minerals and world power. Actions of individual nations affecting their mineral economy seek two basic objectives : 1. Attainment and maintenance of prosperity. 2. Military security. Other objectives may be cited but on careful analysis they become integral parts or extreme phases of the two points noted above. For example, the twentieth century aggressions of the USSR, Germany, Italy, and Japan might be considered as direct bids for world power but they also can be interpreted as exaggerated or mistaken efforts toward military security and peacetime prosperity. The mineral composition and microtextures of a cubanite-rich sulphide ore are described and cubanite breakdown textures are illustrated. The occurrence of cubanite in macroscopic dimensions is featured.The origin of the ore is tentatively related to a composite ore fluid arising initially from an ultramalic source and extracting some metal components from an older granite mass along the margin of which the serpentine was emplaced. Some alternative possibilities as to origin are also mentioned.

A method is described for the rapid and effective production of polished section mounts of ore and mineral particulates to the standards required for automated image analysis. This requires mounting without segregation of particles by mass or density, and it is also preferable to avoid having particles in contact so that they can be recognised as individuals. To achieve this, the particle samples are first split to an appropriate degree in a rotary riffle, and the sub-sample mechanically diluted and thoroughly mixed with an inert filler of the same size range as the particles. Just sufficient epoxy resin is added to make the mixture fluid. During setting, the ore particles are mechanically supported by the inert filler particles, thus maintaining the particles in a random three-dimensional distribution. A rapid two-stage grinding process, based on the successive use of 600 mesh silicon carbide and 1200 mesh (10 um) corundum on cast iron plates, is followed by three stages of mechanical diamond polishing on cloth laps. Hand polishing is entirely avoided, as is the use of papers.

Com o crescente zelo ambiental, os polímeros biodegradáveis ganharam importante papel no mercado mundial. Em especial, o amido é um destaque por apresentar preço baixo e alta demanda, contudo possui grande fragilidade mecânica e os seus filmes são muitos hidrofílicos. Outro importante polímero biodegradável é o poli(ácido lático) que possui, alta resistência mecânica e transparência, quando comparado com o amido termoplástico, permitindo sua aplicação em embalagens alimentícias. Contudo, o PLA ainda possui custo elevado, quando comparado ao amido e até commodities, como o PET, PP e PE. Estudos com algodão, material em grande produção e baixo custo, retratam ganhos nas propriedades mecânicas sem perda da biodegradabilidade em compósitos. Assim, este trabalho objetivou preparar, por meio de homogeneizador termocinético KMixer e prensa térmica, placas de compósitos de PLA contendo amido (0, 3 e 5% m/m) e fibras de algodão in natura processadas (0, 10 e 20% m/m). As amostras foram caracterizados por espectroscopia na região do infravermelho com transformada de Fourier (FTIR), ângulo de contato estático e ensaios mecânicos (módulo de Young, resistência à tração e alongamento na ruptura). As análises mostraram que a adição de fibra de algodão compensa a perda de resistencia à tração ocasionada pela adição de TPS. Tanto a fibra como o amido aumentaram a molhabilidade do compósito.

Las altas expectativas de la población circundante por acceder a la oferta de contratación de servicios y empleo local que genera una empresa minera suelen derivar en presión social. En este artículo se reseña el proyecto desarrollado por Yanacocha para mejorar el relacionamiento con la comunidad socio-empresarial de su ámbito de influencia, a través de cuatro ejes de trabajo: (i) gestión y planificación integral de los servicios y empleo, (ii) segmentación por giro de negocio y capacidad de contratación de las empresas locales, (iii) desarrollo de un plan integrado de contratación anual y (iv) comunicación e información permanente respecto de las políticas de contratación de la empresa. La implementación del proyecto evidenció una relación directa positiva con la disminución de conflictividad. Además, mejoró la percepción acerca de los beneficios que provee la actividad minera.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.
