The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.

O aço inoxidável ferrítico 410D (UNS S41003) é um aço relativamente novo e ainda em desenvolvimento no mercado Brasileiro. Ele tem sido posicionado como um candidato a substituir aços baixo carbono comuns e aços patináveis em algumas aplicações onde existam exigências no que diz respeito à resistência do material à oxidação e à corrosão. Entretanto, ainda existem algumas lacunas de conhecimento a respeito do seu comportamento mecânico que permitam avaliar a viabilidade de sua aplicação em condições agressivas de trabalho, como por exemplo em temperaturas relativamente elevadas. Partes estruturais de caldeiras, tubulações para condução de vapores e gases quentes, entre outros, são exemplos em potencial para aplicação do aço 410D. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho avaliou o comportamento do referido aço quando submetido a ensaios de tração a quente nas temperaturas de 300°C e 600°, comparando-se os resultados obtidos com o seu desempenho à temperatura ambiente. Concluiu-se que o aço inoxidável 410D é susceptível ao fenômeno de envelhecimento dinâmico na temperatura de 300°C, tendo sua capacidade de deformação plástica significativamente diminuída. A 600°C observou-se uma diminuição de 45% no seu limite de escoamento e um aumento de 7% no alongamento total em relação à temperatura ambiente.

In the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area, the layered rocks have been subdivided into two sequences, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower sequence is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and large acid sills. The upper sequence is unconformable on the lower one.In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and pass into conglomerates. Th:s passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds.These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked by areas of shore-line conditions.Repeated igneous activity, including vulcanism, has occurred along the flanks of this basin. These different igneous and sedimentary environments have played an important part in the primary distribution of metals.A chronology of all basic and acid igneous activity, as well as sedimentat:on, has been established for the Precambrian of this area.INTRODUCTIONThe subdivision of Archaean rocks into those of basic igneous or of sedimentary origin has formed the basis for the nomenclature appearing in past literature. In spite of the many new insulating materials, both synthetic and manufactured, that have been put on the market since the end of World War II, and notwithstanding the many millions of dollars applied to the development of synthetic mica, natural block mica1 is still a most indispensable insulator in various electronic components. It will remain so, barring some spectacular break-through in research that might provide a substitute fully acceptable as a replacement for mica in all of its superior properties. But this is not to say the future for mica is assured, or free from serious problems. Technological advances have created problems requiring a solution to be found if future requirements are to be filled.

This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author's methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

"Les réultats obtenus dans les sols sur quatorze aires d'essai et six cheminements régionaux dans I'A bitibi-Témiscamingue indiquent clairement qu'il existe des variations régionales importantes dans les teneurs en éléments traces de l'horizon A1 formé sur l’épais recouvrement glacio-lacustre de cette région. Les anomalies obtenues correspondent à celles qui ont été décelées lors de précédents levés des eaux souterraines et du till de base.Selon les critères d'évaluation utilisés, treize des quatorze aires d'essai ressortent comme anomales dans Ie contexte abitibien; dix de celles-ci sont tres anomales. Ceci suggère fortement qu'un levé régional de sols, fondé sur une approche multi-éléments, identifierait entre 70 et 90 % des cibles géochimiques reconnues par des échantillonnages en profondeur. Les résultats d'un échantillonnage systématique effectué sur une région de 1000km2 viennent aussi appuyer cette hypothèse. Conséquemment, les sols formes sur les sédiments glacio-lacustres sont un médium très utile pour inventorier de grandes regions recouvertes par ce typ e de sédiments.L 'horizon A1 est Ie plus utile pour ce type de levé parce qu'i1 est facil e d échantillonner, qu 'it assure une plus grande constance du typ e de matériel échantillonne et qu'il contient des teneurs accrues.De multiples mécanismes de dispersion géochimique ont joué des rôles d 'importance variable pendant et après la mise en place des sédiments glacio-Iacustres. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been utilised in the oil and gas industry for over 60 years. The technology was recently identified as having potential value in iron ore, where latent bound moisture may affect ore handling even after dewatering and extraction. The first step in introducing this technology to iron ore involved laboratory tests on drill core samples. These results established the parameters for a downhole borehole magnetic resonance (BMR) tool for iron-rich environments, which was subsequently developed. A major challenge involved shrinking what is a very large tool in the oil industry to a slimhole, lightweight, 1-man deployable mining tool.Of primary concern was the ability to measure the very fast transverse relaxation times (T2s) seen in the lab results on iron ore samples. Iron creates local field gradients that significantly decrease the T2 times. As a result, the BMR tool had to be able to measure T2s in the range of hundreds of microseconds, a level not required in clastic sedimentary formations. The choice of T2 cut-offs in iron ore is critical to successfully separating the free and bound fluids. The industry has typically focused on T2 cut-offs in clastics and carbonates, but not in systems with high iron content. Using core analysis results (poro-perm and NMR) we were able to verify the BMR response. The T2 cut-offs were determined from NMR core analysis and then applied to the logs so as to provide a continuous, calibrated permeability log.Field results that highlight the challenge involved in logging in iron-rich environments are presented, as well as some minimum requirements for a successful BMR log. Examples from boreholes in an active iron ore mine in the Pilbara iron ore province in Western Australia are presented, as well as explanations for how NMR data can be combined with bulk density logs to provide a continuous dry weight density log based on the original density-porosity equation from Alger et al (1963).CITATION:Hopper, T A J, Trofimczyk, K K and Birt, B J, 2017. El presente documento técnico tiene como objetivo mostrar las mejoras implementadas en la planta de cobre y molibdeno durante los primeros años de operación de Constancia, las cuales permitieron incrementar en forma sostenida los principales indicadores de producción. Se demuestra la optimización de cuatro principales indicadores: troughput, recuperación, disponibilidad y utilización. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento, que servirán como guía a nuevos proyectos mineros en construcción o en desarrollo, son el resultado de múltiples iniciativas de mejora y nuevas tecnologías implementadas principalmente en el año 2018.

Isso demanda a gestão de ambientes de TI cada vez mais complexos que incluem desde sistemas especialistas a sistemas legados de fusões e aquisições. A integração dessas aplicações com os sistemas corporativos (ERP) resultam em um ambiente com intensas trocas de informações em que a operação se torna dependente do funcionamento sincronizado dessas comunicações. Este trabalho tem como objetivo discutir uma solução de arquitetura de integração manufaturacorporativa por meio de um barramento de serviços e apresentar um estudo de caso.

The conventional method of mining underground, using narrow rooms and wide pillars, has proven to be poorly adapted to the powerful earth forces that act on underground openings. The high costs of roof bolting, timbering, steel arching, and other means of artificial roof support for both room-and--pillar operations and longwall gate roadways attest to the limitations of traditional mine design. Too often, productivity halts when corners buckle under "cutter roof' stresses, floors heave, and roof strata fall. In the 1960s, an entirely different approach to strata control was developed. The Stress Control Method (SCM) stabilizes failing roofs and heaving floors by removing the cause of failure - highly concentrated stresses around the openings. This is achieved by regrouping three to 10 rooms into a single entry where the rooms are separated by very narrow yielding but stable pillars. SCM employs a specified excavation sequence to redirect earth pressures away from the mine openings. The yield pillars act as scaffolding until a permanently protective secondary stress envelope forms around the entry (lower part of Fig. 1). The result is a dramatic improvement in roof stability and a significant reduction in artificial support costs. Some roof bolting must still be done, mainly to meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements. Potash, salt, coal mining The stress control method was first applied to the deep potash mines of Saskatchewan. The new SCM design actually increased room widths to enlarge the stress envelope, redistributing the stress concentration away from the entries (Serata and Schultz, 1972). This resulted in a turnaround from pervasive roof fall/floor heave conditions that threatened operations in the eight new mines opened in the Saskatchewan potash field during the 1960s. In addition to eliminating all roof bolting, SCM successfully stabilized ground conditions and substantially increased productivity over the original design (Serata, 1976, 1982). Similarly, the deep Boulby potash mine of Yorkshire, England, was about to close after various conventional means of combating roof failure had failed. An SCM test area was excavated that resulted in the ground quickly stabilizing without need o artificial support (Serata, 1982; Chilton and Laird, 1982). Another example is the Diamond Crystal salt mine in Louisiana. Here, multiple level mining was being extended from the third to the fourth level downward in the Jefferson Island salt dome. Extensive roof failure was occurring at 396 m (1300 ft) ii the third level. SCM design principles in creased the room size from 24 to 49 m (80 t( 160 ft) on the fourth level at a depth of 457 m (1500 ft). This unprecedented expansion of room width was first questioned and later ap¬proved by MS HA, which expressed satisfaction in seeing the improvement documented by field validation data in 1973. The most recent SUM application to salt mining has been in the Michigan Basin a: Goderich, Ontario. The anticipated abandonment of Domtar Chemicals Group/Sifto Salt Division's deep operation in bedded sale was prevented by a multi-year SCM implementation. The success of SCM in dry mining[lecc] to its application to solution mining of salt This adaptation of the method is now being implemented in bedded salt at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta by Dow Chemical Co., and in St. Clair, MI by International Salt Co. Application of SCM to solution mining in a salt dome is proceeding at Napoleonville. LA by Dow Chemical. Alluvial gold was discovered on Sudest Island in 1888, and by 1893, an official production of 10 000 oz had been won by expatriate miners from shallow alluvial and colluvial workings. Hardrock sources were located and while one was developed at Mt Adelaide, production is unknown. Sudest Island comprises mostly phyllites and lesser coarse grained rocks which are cut by metamorphic quartz veins and basic (locally shoshonitic) intrusives. Sheared and altered basalts and serpent- inites represent are believed to be elements of an ophiolitic suite inferred to be associated with metamorphic core complex development and thus similar to tectonic environments on Misima and the D'Entrec- asteaux Islands. No epithermal-style quartz suggestive of a target similar to that on Misima Island has been identified on Sudest. A hardrock source for the alluvial and colluvial gold is interpreted to be metamorphic quartz veins similar to those in the Bendigo- Ballarat Zone of central Victoria, possibly remobilising gold derived from the meta- sedimentary and meta-igneous rock pile. The present focus is on development of a small scale alluvial gold mining operation in conjunction with exploration for hardrock targets. This latter programme remains at a reconnaissance stage.

O pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE) é um importante subproduto da indústria siderúrgica devido ao seu alto teor de Zn. Assim, tecnologias vêm sendo desenvolvidas visando seu aproveitamento, sendo o forno Waelz a mais difundida delas atualmente. Sua operação, por contar com um forno rotativo de grandes dimensões, que abriga uma infinidade de fenômenos físico-químicos, apresenta difícil previsibilidade ab initio. Por essa razão, este trabalho faz uso de uma ferramenta avançada da termodinâmica computacional, destinada à modelagem de processos, chamada SimuSage, a fim de modelar o seu comportamento. Para a criação do modelo utilizou-se também uma base de dados termodinâmicos advinda do software FactSage e a plataforma Lazarus. Com base em dados e resultados operacionais da literatura, foi possível realizar simulações no modo adiabático e comparar os resultados com os da prática industrial. Constatou-se uma grande sensibilidade do modelo com relação à quantidade de ar de entrada considerada no sistema, mas, também, boa aproximação dos resultados com relação à composição química dos produtos Óxido Waelz e Escória Waelz.

Background: Mines of today are moving ever increasing tonnages of rock. The new ore bodies tend be of lower grade and located deeper in the earth?s crust. The industry?s focus to overcome this ?deeper but poorer? ore problem has traditionally been to lower the costs by increasing the scale of mining. This has resulted in an ever increasing size of mining equipment like drills, loading shovels, dump trucks. The main focus has been in reducing the cost per ton of mining. This cost focus has often resulted in increased waste rock dilution and more ore losses. From costs to value: Waste rock dilution means waste rock in the concentrator feed. It?s value in open pit mining is equal to the value of ore it replaces. In underground mining, waste rock dilution?s value is equal to the value of ore it replaces added to the costs of mining it. It is commonly accepted that waste rock dilution in open pit mining ranges between 5 and 20% and in underground mining between 5 and 40 % . In a typical large open pit mine ore value is from 20 to 60 USD per ton and mining costs are 1 to 3 USD per ton. One percentage point reduction in waste rock dilution represents savings corresponding to about 20% of total mining operation costs. The difficulty of reducing waste rock dilution comes from the complicated nature of the ores. Accurate ore waste-border detection has not been possible due to excessive costs. Core drilling combined with geochemical lab analysis is the most accurate method for locating ore waste borders. However, it is also expensive and time consuming, which is why it is often combined with somewhat lower cost methods like sampling drill cuttings from blasting drill holes or from reverse circulation drills and analyzing them in a laboratory. The main drawback with these methods, in addition high costs, lies in the sampling accuracy and in the quality control of the whole process when a large number of samples have to be handled manually. In every mine it is possible to halve waste rock dilution by using new on-line analysis technology .

El presente trabajo es un estudio técnico-económico del yacimiento minero Caridad, perteneciente a la compañía del mismo nombre en Lima, cuyas características permiten aplicar el método de corte y relleno en la minería en vetas de plata. Sin embargo, las bajas cotizaciones en el mercado mundial de los metales, minimizaron los costos de los mismos y aumentaron la productividad para mantener la mina en operación. Por tal motivo, se busca utilizar este método en pequeñas minas de plata que tienen características similares y asi recuperar el minado completo de los valores en plata, la eficiencia en la mecanización de los equipos de acarreo y volteo y reducir los accidentes por caídas de rocas, como causa principal en la minería subterránea.

Residual aeolian placers (RAPs) are formed by the wind, by preferential entrainment and removal of small and low-density detritusfrom a pre-existing, typically sedimentary sequence containing heavy minerals. Heavy minerals that are resistant to chemical alteration and either soft and malleable (gold), or extremely hard (diamond, sapphire, ruby, etc), are concentrated as a residual on the wind deflation surface, typically in the interstices between larger resistant clasts. RAPs form preferentially in arid or semi arid areas, where the vegetation is sparse or absent, and where topography and surface gradients are low, but may also form on beaches and in periglacial environments. RAPs consist of a continuous or discontinuous, planar or gently undulating horizon of heavy minerals in a single-clast-thick pavement of resistant pebbles, cobbles, or boulders, which mantles the present topography or palaeo-topography. Extreme wind erosion and surface deflation may condense the full pre-existing sequence into a layer of heavy minerals only. The grade of RAPs is substantially higher than in the precursor deposit, and commonly much higher than those typically found in most other placer types. Aside from their general occurrence as a thin pavement of resistant clasts, the best indicators of residual aeolian gold placers are the presence of wind-eroded stones (ventifacts) on the pavement, and the distinctive and unique shapes of aeolian gold grains themselves. The shape of the gold grains is progressively transformed by sand blasting during placer development, from grains with thickened rims, to toroidal grains on which the rims are æsplitÆ and peened inward toward the grain centre on one or both of the grain sides, to hemispherical or sub-spherical grains that are fully encapsulated by the in-turned rims. Gold that has undergone aeolian shape transformation is difficult to entrain and transport away from the site of aeolian concentration by anything other than mass movement or glacial processes. It is also easily retained by commercial recovery plants of any configuration.

O posicionamento de bobinas a quente com seu eixo na direção horizontal protege suas bordas, mas restringe sua área de apoio sobre o solo. Logo, é inevitável que a bobina sofra algum grau de ovalização pela ação de seu próprio peso, o qual se torna particularmente acentuado em algumas situações, como no caso de aços com médio e alto teor de carbono após bobinamento sob temperaturas relativamente altas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi identificar as possíveis contramedidas para minimizar o grau de ovalização das bobinas a quente. Foi constatado que a ocorrência desse problema é crítica para bobinas mais finas, com maior peso e com menor tensionamento entre as espiras, bem como quando seu bobinamento termina antes da transformação total da austenita, particularmente no caso de aços com alto carbono equivalente. Por outro lado, o posicionamento das bobinas em berços com ângulos otimizados contribui para minimizar a ovalização. A seleção das medidas a ser adotadas para reduzir esse problema deve ser ponderada caso a caso, pois elas podem eventualmente interferir com as características finais do produto solicitadas pelo cliente.

"This paper discusses a new methodology for defining and measuring mine planning software utilization in the South African gold mining sector within an evolving data-set framework. An initial data-set showing the mine planning software providers, their corresponding software solutions, as well as the software capabilities and information on the number of licences was collected and compiled in 2012 in an online database for software utilized in the South African mining industry. Details of the database development and implementation were published in the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgyin 2013. In 2014 the data-set was updated with additional and new information. Using the 2012 and 2014 timestamps, a methodology for estimating the software utilization was developed. In this methodology, the three variables of commodity, functionality, and time factor were used to define and measure the software utilization in order to ultimately inform decision-making strategies for optimal software utilization. Using six different functionalities, namely Geological Data Management, Geological Modelling and Resource Estimation, Design and Layout, Scheduling, Financial Valuation, and Optimization, utilization in the gold sector was measured. This paper presents the methodology employed for measuring the mine planning software utilization. The methodology is useful for stakeholders reviewing existing software combinations or intending to purchase new software in the near future and who want to estimate the comparative attractiveness of a certain software package. These stakeholders include mining companies, consulting companies, educational institutions, and software providers. The work presented in this paper is part of a PhD research study in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand."

For many years line-of-sight (LOS) issues for underground mobile equipment is a growing focus of research. This research is a result of the numerous fatalities and injuries which occur in the mining industry and which are related to poor operator LOS. Three assessment methods are currently used to assess operator LOS of underground mobile equipment. The light filament (LF) method is a hands-on assessment method that is performed in the field. This method is not evaluated in this paper. The laser scan (LS) method of assessing equipment is a quick and reliable method that comes from the need to evaluate vehicles already located in the field. The computer simulation (CS) method can assess LOS issues using a computer aided drawing (CAD) model, which is useful for assessing current or prototype models. The purpose of the current research is to compare and validate different operator LOS assessment methods. Comparison of the results of the LS and CS visibility plots yielded similar quantifiable results. A visual comparison of the results further illustrate that the LS and CS methods are acceptable assessment tools for mobile equipment operator LOS evaluation. The visibility assessment methods are now being prepared as guidelines for the mining industry to assess current and potential designs.

El presente texto señala el diseño de controladores en los hornos de fusión de concentrados de cobre a través de la lógica difusa. Para ello, se simuló dinámicamente el proceso de fusión de concentrados de cobre de un horno de tecnología Isasmelt, incluyendo su actual sistema de control y subsistemas convencionales (PID), para representar sus principales parámetros termodinámicos, y de esta forma, obtener una base de medición. Posteriormente, se desarrolló el sistema de control avanzado con la teoría de lógica difusa, que fue incorporado en el módulo de simulación del horno, para comparar su performance con la del controlador convencional.
