The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

It is the purpose of this paper to examine a number of the recent developments in powder metallurgy, being most concerned with those which are yet to prove themselves rather than those which have achieved commercial maturity. Such developments include the production of very much coarser and very much finer powders, down to the near-micron size range. Also considered are activated sintering, direct powder rolling and extrusion (both hot and cold), brazing and welding, hydrides of reactive metals, oxide dispersion strengthened alloys and theoretical evaluations. Introduction T HERE surely can't be very much argument with the fact that powder metallurgy has made large advances on many fronts during the past ten or more years (1). Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidised-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Based on its condition, Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled due to the combined effects of too-high operating temperatures and corrosion caused by the following two main factors: ? Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut which resulted in and increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue; ? SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated through the brick lining, passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but upon dismantling more damage was found and the roaster was rebuilt from the tuyeres upwards. During the rebuild, the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

Since 1997, in partnership with the Laboratoire Central des Ponts et Chaussées in Strasbourg, ProfilARBED has been carrying out a vast study to qualify the improvements jetting can make to vibratory driving of steel sheet piles, and to understand its effect on the surrounding ground and on the sheet piles themselves. The process basically involves discharging a fluid (mostly water, sometimes in association with air) at controlled pressure and/or flow rate near the toe of the sheet pile being driven. The steel jetting pipes are attached to the sheet pile and are connected to the pumps by hoses. The jet of fluid loosens the soil, thus reducing the resistance at the toe of the sheet pile. Depending on ground conditions, the fluid that flows along the pile can reduce skin friction. Four soil types were involved in our experiments. Each site was instrumented: the driving parameters and the geotechnical characteristics of the soil before and after vibratory driving and jetting-assisted driving were recorded. Each test provided its own particular information which contributes to overall thinking on the matter and is of help to project managers who are often confronted with rapid driving to the final depth.

En 2010 se identificó un peligro potencial en la pared Norte del Tajo Chaquicocha, donde existía fallas pre-existentes, catch bench reducidos (subestándar) y bloques colgados que presuponían condiciones de mala voladura de control. Por ello, se planteó la modificación del diseño Final del Tajo Chaquicocha, ya que la continuidad de estos malos resultados arriesgaba el minado de los Bancos inferiores. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente texto estriba en lograr voladuras masivas, sin afectar la estabilidad de las paredes del Tajo Chaquicocha, así como tener beneficios económicos en la reducción de tiempo de minado por cada banco, y en la productividad (Dig Rate) de los equipos de carguío.

"Long distance slurry pipeline systems have been successfully trans-porting steam coal, iron concentrates, copper concentrates and limestone for an aggregate of nearly 60 years and nearly three billion ton-miles annually. A phosphate concentrate pipeline is nearing start-up and systems for coking coal, lead/zinc concentrates and fly ash are planned. The solids pipeline concept, first patented in the early 1900's and commercialized in the 1950's, is now a proven technology providing an economic, environmentally pleasing and safe method for long distance bulk transport.The challenge for larger tonnage and longer distance movements of solids, for traversing increasingly rugged terrain in grass roots mineral developments, for transporting untried materials and for shipping more economic forms of proven materials still remains. This has necessitated continued refinements and optimization of the technology. The economic and environmental incentives for slurry pipelines when compared to other transport alternatives has justified substantial activity in this area. The scope of planned systems in coal, iron and other minerals is indicative of the firm place slurry pipelines will have in worldwide mineral development.In this presentation, the state-of-the-art in long distance slurry pipelines is reviewed with a focus on major systems of interest to the mineral processing industry. An overview of new developments in the application of this concept is presented, and finally, a projection of the future of pipelines in mineral development both worldwide and in Canada is discussed."

Geotechnical conditions in the Lochiel Deposit are somewhat unusual, and thus geotechnical and hydrological investigations have assumed a high priority. The cost of mining the deposit has been shown to be very sensitive to geotechnical design parameters, and it is now seen to be of paramount importance to establish a high level of confidence in the design parameters used for mining cost estimation. Geotechnical investigations in the Lochiel Deposit reached a crossroads in 1985, when there appeared to be several quite different and equally attractive routes to follow to establish a satisfactory level of confidence in geotechnical mine design parameters. Three main options were identified, referred to as the No Further Work Route, the Drill and Trench Route, and the Trial Pit Route. The No Further Work Route was ruled out as being technically unsound and as satisfying none of the Electricity Trust of South Australia's (ETSA's) or the State Government's requirements. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento mecânico sob flexão de um instrumento endodôntico constituído de Ni-Ti M-Wire e comparar suas respostas com aquelas obtidas de um instrumento de Ni-Ti superelástico convencional com a mesma geometria, utilizando-se simulação por elementos finitos. Um instrumento ProTaper Universal F1 foi selecionado para este estudo. O modelo geométrico para a simulação numérica foi gerado através de micro-tomografia computadorizada e os dados para os modelos constitutivos foram obtidos por meio de ensaios de tração realizados em laboratório. A simulação numérica foi realizada em ABAQUS, com condições de contorno baseadas na especificação ISO 3630-1. Os resultados mostram que instrumentos de Ni-Ti M-Wire apresentam maior flexibilidade e menores valores de tensão quando submetidos à flexão, o que indica que estes instrumentos são mais resistentes à fadiga por flexão.

Neste trabalho, amostras de NiTi com a composição de 50,9% at. Ni passaram por um tratamento superficial a laser Nd:YAG. O objetivo desde trabalho foi de modificar a superfície das amostras para comparar o parâmetro de rugosidade média (Ra) entre as amostras que sofreram interação do pulso do laser e a amostra que não passou pelo tratamento superficial a laser, já que para algumas aplicações biomédicas a superfície do material precisa ser rugosa. Para tanto, o laser foi utilizado em condições de velocidades de avanço diferentes. A amostra tratada com a menor velocidade de avanço laser, de 12,5 cm.s-1, apresentou uma maior rugosidade (Ra de 210 nm) devido ao maior tempo de contato do feixe com a superfície da amostra e, além disso, observou-se a formação de óxidos na superfície da amostra.

Time-dependent ground behavior may have important implications for the construction process or the life of a tunnel. The paper gives a concise overview of the influence of time on the deformations and the stability of underground openings, including topics such as face stability in soft ground or the time-development of pressure or deformations in squeezing or swelling rock. While keeping in mind practical questions of tunnel engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding the observed time-dependency, on the underlying mechanisms (such as pore water pressure dissipation or chemical processes) as well as on the respective inherent prediction-uncertainties and design-uncertainties.

"Highwall miners have been widely used to extract additional coal reserves from existing surface operations, particularly on contour operations in the Appalachian coalfields. Using a continuous miner cutting head, coal may be extracted from significant depths (such as 150 m), leaving behind an array of web and barrier pillars with the purpose of maintaining highwall stability. This method inherently involves elevated risks to both equipment and personnel due to proximity to and increased exposure time near highwalls. As a result, modern operations should actively design web and barrier pillars to maximize extraction while providing adequate stability. The ARMPS-HWM software, an empirical-based program created for the design of web and barrier pillars at highwall mining operations, is one such approach. The calculated stability factor is compared with empirically established guidelines produced from examining case histories.The ARMPS-HWM program is a handy tool for initial design, but understanding the site’s structurally significant geologic features and geomechanical behavior is important and may potentially increase extraction. We created a two-dimensional numerical model using FLAC3D and calibrated it to ensure pillar strength, closely following the Mark- Bieniawski formula for a typical range of pillar geometries and overburden properties. The development of pillar stresses along a highwall panel was then numerically investigated as mining progressed, and the stress distribution between barrier pillars was found to be asymmetric, which can result in an over-design of the closeout web pillars if tributary area loading is assumed. Finally, the importance of adequate barrier pillar stability is highlighted."

AFTER the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public assayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a sufficiently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present., small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. Este artigo está voltado para otimização da dosagem de aglomerante na planta 3 de pelotização da Samarco em Ubu com objetivo de reduzir a variabilidade, reduzir o retorno de pelotas cruas, aumentar a quantidade de pelotas na faixa entre 8 a 16mm e, consequente, aumento da produtividade.

Introdduction The main line of ascent in the development of the nickel industry may be traced back through the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, to its earliest antecedents, the Canadian Copper Company and the Orford Copper Company. Mining geology is but one aspect of the overall development of this organization, and the stress it has placed on geology grew according to the need. In the early days, intensive geology was not required because ore supply was not one of the main problems of this or any of the pioneer companies. The difficulty then was to find economic methods for reducing the ores to nickel and copper, and markets for absorbing nickel in the face of a limited demand from consumers heavily prejudiced in favour of the New Caledonia product. "Very early in the history of the region it was patent to everyone that to share in the full benefits of the industry the same individuals or company must control the whole of the operation necessary to manufacture the finished product' (1, p. 45). These conditions were fulfilled for the International Nickel Company in 1902 when the Canadian Copper Company (incorporated 1886), with its ample ore supply, took the initiative to merge its interests with those of the Orford Copper (Refining) Company (incorporated 1887) to form the new company which, with reorganizational changes, emerged as the producer of the overwhelming bulk of the world's nickel. The Mond Nickel Company, Limited, entered the field in 1899 with a refining process, and over a period of years acquired ore through purchase of mining properties. This Company operated successfully and independently until 1929 when its assets were joined with those of the International Nickel Company in order to permit the most economic exploitation of the Frood-Stobie orebody in which both Companies were interested.

The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.
