Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. O mercado de Siderurgia no Brasil vive um momento de pressão causado pelas quedas dos preços internacionais e agravado por fatores internos como a redução no consumo, aumento do custo de energia e tributação elevada. Tendo em vista que, ao menos no curto prazo, não há perspectiva de melhoria, as indústrias do setor se mobilizam para adequar a esta nova realidade. A sobrevivência em um cenário de alta competitividade é garantida reduzindo custos de produção e manutenção e buscando aumentar a produtividade sem, entretanto, expandir a capacidade produtiva. Para atingir estes objetivos as indústrias focam em pequenas melhorias operacionais, com investimentos em pequenas modernizações e otimizações de processos existentes, em detrimento de grandes investimentos em expansões. Neste contexto observa-se um aumento na relevância do software de automação, que surge como alternativa para realização de melhorias, pois possuem custo relativamente baixo em comparação com reformas a nível mecânico e podem proporcionar ganhos importantes de eficiência e qualidade. Este artigo apresenta um estudo da utilização de metodologias ágeis de desenvolvimento de software para realização de melhoria contínua em processos industriais. Como exemplo de aplicação é apresentado o trabalho de otimização do software de automação de um laminador de alumínio com foco no aumento de sua taxa de utilização. A meta foi buscar um ganho de produtividade garantindo os mesmos padrões de segurança originais dos equipamentos e com impacto mínimo nas atividades produtivas.

El presente artículo describe algunos aspectos de la educación de la carrera profesional de ingeniería en Europa. Para ello, se obtuvo información de educadores de países como: Inglaterra, Francia, España, Italia, Alemania, Portugal, Bélgica, Suecia, Polonia, Yugoeslavia, Finlandía, Austria y Holanda, donde se evaluó la cantidad de años reales para obtener de título de Ingeniero Civil, en qué niveles está dividida la educación de ingenieros en el país; el nivel de matemáticas que debe poseer un ingeniero al recibir el primer grado; los posibles estudios postprofesionales que existen respecto a la carrera; el número de estudiantes por cada escuela de ingeniería, métodos de enseñanza, y el porcentaje de materias básicas para alguna ingeniería, los materias de aplicación y las herramientas comprenden los programas de las escuelas de ingenierías.

Suggestions have been made at various times that there may be a recurrence of lodes similar to those at Kalgoorlie in the country to the south of the Golden Mile, but, so far as is known, there has been no geological evidence to support these suggestions apart from the possible extension of the younger quartz-dolerite greenstone in this direction.Geological mapping carried out by the writer in the Coolgardie district in 1946, provided some additional geological evidence to support this claim, and the ideas then held have since been expanded and are now considered to be sufficiently advanced to present them as concrete suggestions. As will be seen from the following pages, the critical area for lode prospecting is Hannan's Lake, where the basement rocks may include younger quartz dolerite greenstone, which, although perhaps distributed over a smaller area than at Kalgoorlie, could, on structural grounds, have a similar fracture system and similar ore deposition.There is little need to stress the importance discoveries in this area would have in prolonging the life of the field, and stimulating the post-war gold mining revival.Previous Work: Only the publications having a direct bearing on the preparation of this paper are given in the list of selected references, but the writer is very conscious of the fact that much other geological work has been carried out in the Kalgoorlie district since its discovery, by the W.A. Department of Mines, by mining companies, and others, all of which has contributed to the present knowledge of the field, and acknowledgment of the value of this work is given herewith. In presenting the suggestions in this paper a broad structural control of ore deposition is assumed, but this has already been established in other parts of the goldfields of Western Australia, including adjacent areas. In the early nineteen thirties, the Western Mining Corporation commenced work on the basis that there was a close relationship between geological structure and auriferous ore deposition, and a similar approach was first made by the Geological Survey of Western Australia in the South Yilgarn in 1935. These ideas were further developed during later surveys, particularly in the North Yilgarn and the Mount Margaret Goldfield.During the Coolgardie Survey in 1946, broad structural mapping was done in greater detail than before, and the structural ideas were implemented and further developed, leading to some success.Other work to which particular acknowledgment is given is that of Stiltwell, Gustafson and Miller, Forman, Prider and Finucane, at Kalgoorlie, and that of Honman in the Kalgoorlie-Coolgardie district, references to which are given at the end of this paper.Valuable constructive criticism of this paper has been given by Professor E. de C. Clarke and Dr. R. T. Prider, of the University of Western Australia.

This article attempts to outline essential features of the Mount Isa ore deposit, to reveal the agencies thought to be responsible for its localization, and to describe methods used for obtaining and applying geological data on a commercial basis. Structural features are emphasized because they have proved the most useful agencies to date in searching for ore. Vertical depth, horizontal width and stratigraphic thickness are used throughout the article, and quantities are quoted in long tons.THE DEPOSITA width of more than two miles of evenly bedded shale of the Mount Isa series (upper pre-Cambrian) lies sandwiched conformably between quartzites. The series strikes N.S. and dips approximately 60° W. Shale is unaltered...Important geological work has been carried out by the Queensland Geological Survey, chiefly by Mr. S. R. L. Shepherd, in co-operation with the Geological Department of Mount Isa Mines Limited. Small scale' table concentration tests have many critics. Many metallurgists consider that such tests are of problematical value because of the difficulties involved in conducting and interpreting them.Many kinds of small-scale ore dressing tests are difficult to conduct, and there is, perhaps, good reason for thinking that table concentration tests are amongst the most difficuIt.Interpretation of results from small-scale tests is the responsibility of the metallurgists and engineers in charge, and it is often held that small-scale table concentration tests are particularly difficmlt to interpret.TESTING FOR TABLE CONCENTRATIONOn analysis it appears that the difficulties encountered in conducting small-scale table concentration tests are of three fairly distinct kinds. Firstly, there are difficulties due inherently to the smallscale nature of the operations; for example the smaller width of all mineral bands on the table and the less complete separation due to the shorter length of travel between the feed and discharge points.Secondly, there are the effects of batch operation owing to the fact that the mineral particles behave differently during the initial period when the sample is just beginning to spread over the table, the middle period when feed and discharge are even and continuous, and the final stage, when the last of the sample has been added and the table is beginning to empty itself.

J. H. Lord (Geological Survey of Western Australia): During the last few days in Kalgoorlie here we have heard on various occasions of the great job the mining engineers have done persisting against rising costs and increasing salaries without a rise in the price of gold. I think it has been somewhat overlooked that it has been difficult to find additional ore as well. I consider that geologists also should be commended on their action in persisting to search for more orebodies. This goes on in any mining community, but in Kalgoorlie in particular, I believe, over the last few years that it has been more difficult all the time to find additional orebodies and the Companies are calling for higher grades to offset the economic condition. I feel that this paper by Mr. Finucane shows that the geologists have persevered on an idea and discovered that they can find additional orebodies in the calc schist where previously it was thought that these did not occur. This has added many tons to the ore reserves, and although it is not very significant at the moment, the significance will probably improve as more work is done.The whole thing has shown us the importance of economic geology. Mr Finucane has had many years of experience here and he has given us a very able exposition of the economics of ore finding, and there are not many questions that one could pose to him, because most of the information he presented is obviously fact borne out by drilling, underground development and lining up the ore channels. He did briefly touch on ore shoots-the Oroya shoot and several others. It would be very good if we could, and I feel sure...

En este sentido, se revisa la repercusión del sistema de simulación GASP VI, el cual propone una serie de reglas de un sector de la realidad y lo simplifica en un modelo a construir. Este lenguaje de programación reconoce las identidades y sus atributos como codificación del valor de los atributos. Asimismo, sugiere el enlace entre el modelaje y las actividades del programa, simplificando el diseño y los análisis de las actividades requeridas por el problema a resolver.

O desafio no processo de coqueificação está relacionado à elaboração de misturas de carvões que produzam coque com a qualidade para utilização nos altos-fornos. Foi avaliada, em escala piloto, a influência de materiais inertes (coque verde de petróleo [CVP], antracito e carvão com alto teor de inerte [CATI]) às misturas de coqueificação sobre a formação de microtexturas e a qualidade do coque. Os resultados indicaram que, para a mistura avaliada, a adição do CVP até 30% produziu coque com qualidade (DI15-150) adequada para os altos-fornos da Usiminas. As principais microtexturas foram do tipo mosaico, fragmentária, fusita, inerte anisotrópico e o próprio CVP. O antracito provocou redução significativa de DI15-150 e CSR. A análise de microscopia óptica revelou partículas livres na matriz de coque, contribuindo para a queda de qualidade. A adição de CATI às misturas de coqueificação resultou em forte queda na qualidade do coque e a microtextura do tipo mosaico foi predominante. De forma geral, o carvão com alto teor de inertes foi o que apresentou menos benefícios, diferentemente do CVP, que apresentou melhor resultado para ser utilizado nas misturas de coqueificação da Usiminas.

When we are beset with the economic problems the world faces today, we are always inclined to look at the shorter term future. Today I would like to take a long-term view of our industry, project historical demands for our products into the future and discuss opportunities for our members. Perhaps we could firstly look at the long-term demand trends for our metals. If I tend to use non ferrous metals as a basis for my figures it is because this data is more readily available to me. I am sure that most other products of our industry show similar trends.

En los últimos 20 años la operación minera en Antamina ha profundizado su tajo, el stripping ratio y la distancia de acarreo de desmonte, se han seguido incrementando para mantener la producción metálica. Tal como ocurre en las todas operaciones mineras de tajo abierto, se espera en los próximos años un incremento sustancial de la cantidad de desmonte a remover conforme se avance las siguientes extensiones de vida. En adición a esta situación, los recientes compromisos globales de reducción de emisiones de carbono exigen reducir progresivamente hasta eliminar el 100% la emisión de carbono, opuesto a lo requerido para seguir operando con métodos convencionales. Estos dos factores afectan la sustentabilidad en el largo plazo en todas las empresas mineras maduras como en el futuro de Antamina.

Aquellos que lo hacen a menudo usan hojas de cálculo que consumen mucho tiempo para compilar y son propensas a errores humanos. Además, es evidente que la actividad minera y la producción de metales, tal como se lleva a cabo en la actualidad, generan emisiones de carbono significativas. Esto pone de manifiesto la necesidad urgente de abordar este problema y adoptar medidas efectivas para reducir la huella de carbono de la industria minera.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.

Ante los problemas económicos ocurridos durante el proceso de tratamiento hidrometalúrgico de los minerales oxidados de cobre en Cerro Verde, se decidó suspender dicho proyecto y se planteó un nuevo sistema donde era posible la lixiviación de los sulfuros. En este proceso de investigación, el uso de perforación no convencional desarrolló una función importante puesto que permitió recuperar muestras de hasta 20 metros de perforación en condiciones difíciles. Por tal motivo, el presente texto describe los mecanismos de lixivación de sulfuros desarrollados a escala industrial por el proyecto de Cerro Verde II a través de la perforación y los muestreos de los pads de lixiviación.

The Q-coda method for estimating the quality factor Q(f)= Qo(f)n was used to characterize seismic wave attenuation in a region of the Kaapvaal Craton that includes the mining areas of the Bushveld Complex and Witwatersrand Basin. Seismic waveform data, collected by locally distant stations of the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), consisted of mining-related events with magnitudes ranging from ML 1.8 to ML 4. Q was calculated for nine different source-receiver pairs spanning the study region. A weighted average Q based on the number of available data gave an estimated attenuation relation for the study region of Q(f) = 327 f 0.81.

Although lifetime estimates for sulfate reduction based on total substrate carbon typically range from 20 to 30 years, field and laboratory experiments showed that rates of sulfate reduction decreased over time as readily available organic material was consumed. When the rate of acid input exceeded the rate of sulfate reduction, alkalinity was removed from the substrate, pH decreased and metals increased. Output pH increased from 4 to over 6 after the system was shut down for several weeks and the rate of acid input was reduced. Successful long term treatment requires a design based on the input pH and the long-term organic decomposition rate.

Among the pile foundations of the 156 tall buildings over 18 storeys in Shenzhen, 86. 5% of them are constructed by slurry drilled piles, bored piles and excavated piles (hand-dug caissons). Based on the experiences of the engineering practices, the paper points out that the main quality problems of pile foundations in Shenzhen are: insufficient bearing capacity of single pile; poor concrete quality of pile; damage of the precast pile; pile tip not reaching the required bearing stratum and the thickness of bored/drilled sediment exceeding the specified. etc. The quality inspection methods that have been used include: check of construction records and excavating; static loading test; core sampling test; non-destructive test, etc. Treatments of quality problems used in Shenzhen are also introduced in this paper.
