El presente trabajo refiere la utilización práctica de las escorias metalúrgicas -en tanto material de aislamiento térmico-. La lana de escoria es conocida como "lana mineral", cuya industria se inició en 1897. La manufactura suelta no es el producto final, sino la materia prima, que será tratada en un proceso seco para obtener las diferentes formas de productos y adaptarlas a distintos usos. La lana de escoria puede ser usada como aislante térmico, en absorción de sonido y también como medio de filtración y material de relleno. En el primer caso, se utiliza en casas y edificios, hornos, duetos de aire acondicionado, salas frigoríficas para alimentos, tanques de agua caliente, calderos, intercambiadores de calor, tuberías, etc. Mientras que en el segundo caso se utiliza para extraer polvo, agua de aire o gases. Asimismo, los productos de lana de escoria son la granulada, acolchada en mantas, en bloque, en planchas comprimidas, en formas moldeadas, las cuales tienen una densidad instalada desde 2-lb/pies3 en las formas más-79- livianas, hasta 16 lb/pies 3 en las formas semi-rígidas.

The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30,000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet.A typical assay for a monthly period is 14·40/0 Pb., 5·6 ozs. Ag., and 11· 60/0 Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and 'zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.MINING METHODSMining practice throughout the field varies only in minor details. The ore-bodies forming the Broken Hill Lode lie within complex folds arranged along a shear and vary in size and mineralogical associations, but all the mines have similar types. Some of the ore-bodies have weak walls, but the chief difficulty in mining is caused by "heads" and "flaws" in the ore.Besides these local weak areas there are ground movements-referred to later-of varying magnitude extending throughout the central portion of the lode where the large ore-bodies, several hundred feet wide, approached the surface.

The Ladolam deposit lies within the altered volcanic rocks of the caldera floor, part of which now forms Luise Harbour. It was discovered in 1982 in the course of a reconnaissance drainage sediment sampling programme. This was designed to follow up indications of surface hydrothermal activity noted by Government geologists during an earlier survey of the Tabar-Feni island chain. Diamond drilling began in September 1983 and by the end of 1989 a payable and proved mineable reserve containing 19 million ounces of gold had been established. Rock types and structures are masked at the surface by intense alteration and weathering. An extensive drilling programme has enabled the identification of these features and the relationships between them necessary for an understanding of the factors controlling gold mineralisation. It has also led to the recognition of two distinct phases of alteration. The first phase of porphyry-style potassic alteration was followed by violent caldera formation, producing extensive brecciation and veining. The second alteration phase partly over- printed the first phase and was an epithermal one, evidenced by argillic, advanced argillic and phyllic assemblages. During this event, a large volume of fluids circulated under the favourable structural conditions; these fluids included a sulphur- rich, neutral chloride brine believed to have transported the gold. Boiling and mixing of circulating fluids in the open breccias is thought to have resulted in deposition of the gold. There is evidence that this process is continuing at the present day.

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world's output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

In 1990, Freeport Exploration began regional reconnaissance exploration programs in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the republic of Indonesia (Fig. 1). Irian Jaya occupies the western half of the island of New Guinea. Freeport was awarded an initial contract of work that totaled 2.6 million hm2 (6.4 million acres). The company was subsequently awarded additional concessions that added 1 million hm2 (2.5 million acres). The concessions require work commitments and periodic relinquishments. Due to these relinquishments, Freeport’s current land position totals 1.9 million hm2 (4.7 million acres). Freeport began the exploration program to locate additional Grasberg deposits, the largest deposit in the Ertsberg district. But the company recognized that other types of deposits could be present in the largely unexplored area of Irian Jaya.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

En la unidad Cerro de Pasco de Empresa Administradora Cerro SAC, existen varias fuentes de aguas ácidas de diversas características, con diferentes rangos de acidez y contenidos metálicos de hierro, zinc y cobre, que parcialmente han pasado de ser un pasivo, en términos económicos y ambientales, a ser una fuente de recursos. El tratamiento convencional que se aplicaba en la planta de neutralización consistía en neutralizar la acidez protónica y precipitar los metales disueltos utilizando lechada de cal y luego separar por sedimentación los sólidos formados para obtener un efluente tratado descargado por vertimiento y disposición de lodos formados en la relavera de la unidad. El cambio de pasivo a recurso para las aguas ácidas pasó por rehabilitar un proceso abandonado, identificando y separando en el interior de la mina subterránea un flujo que por su contenido de cobre ha sido separado en un circuito independiente del existente para las otras aguas ácidas de menores contenidos metálicos. Se desarrolló una secuencia de procesos de precipitación selectiva; inicialmente para recuperar cobre se implementó a escala industrial la cementación con chatarra de hierro. A escala piloto se han concluido tanto las pruebas para separar el hierro por oxidación y precipitación selectiva en medio ácido, como aquellas por las que, a partir de la solución pobre de la precipitación del hierro, se precipita el zinc en dos alternativas: precipitación alcalina como hidróxido de zinc o precipitación en medio ácido por sulfuración. A escala industrial, la recuperación de cobre en la cementación con chatarra de hierro alcanza el 75%, y 85% de contenido de cobre fino. A escala piloto, para el hierro se espera una recuperación sobre 95%, para un producto que alcanza 39% de fierro, mientras que para el zinc, la recuperación esperada es de 93% y un contenido de 35% de Zn en el precipitado de sulfuro.

Zircon sand may be reacted with sodium hydroxide at 600° C. to form sodium zirconate and sodium silicate. Sodium zirconate is water insoluble and so may be washed free of sodium silicate. The sodium zirconate may then be converted to zirconyl chloride by the action of hydrochloric acid and the zirconyl chloride crystals separated by cooling the solution. This approach produces zirconyl chloride of satisfactory purity with less cost than is involved in buying anhydrous zirconium chloride and converting it. The techniques are discussed briefly in the following sections. However, detailed information on the techniques is provided in the cited references. INTRODUCTION Coalbed methane, if not properly controlled in the underground mine environment, is a safety concern due to the potential risk for an explosion. This is a particular problem during longwall mining, where the high rate and volume of coal extraction can result in the release of large amounts of methane from the mined coalbed and other adjacent gas-bearing strata. The variability and potential hazards of these sometimes unexpectedly high gas flows provide the impetus to develop methods to predict methane emissions into the underground workplace. A forecast of the volume of gas that might be released during coal mining is helpful for designing ventilation systems and for implementing optimum methane drainage strategies to help mitigate expected gas emission problems. A complete assessment of the need for methane drainage prior to mine development generally requires both an empirical and a theoretical approach. If there are active mines in the general area with similar geologic conditions and coal characteristics, a review of gas problems in those mines provides an initial insight into the level of gas emissions to be expected at a new location. In addition, relatively simple methods exist to determine the in situ gas content (volume of gas per unit weight of coal) of the coalbeds in a particular mining area, as well as the gas-in-place (volume of gas in the coalbed(s) within a defined geographic area).

The pjPocesses of polygonization and subgrain growth were followed in slightly stretched 99.99 pct A1 single crystals heated for cumulative times at 400°, 500°, and 600°C. Changes in sub-grain size and boundary angle were determined from measurements on X-ray micrographs. CAHN1, 2 studied polygonization in stretched and heated aluminum single crystals of 99.99 pct A1 using various techniques, including etch pits, Laue patterns, and a slight restretching of heated specimens to reveal small changes in lattice orientation by the direction of new slip lines. He found that kink bands, which had well-defined boundaries lying in a plane perpendicular to the slip direction (at least in the early stages of deformation), formed during stretching. Also, he noted that bending occurred about the <211> axis lying in the (111) slip plane perpendicular to the <110> slip direction. His studies of polygonization were largely confined to the kink bands rather than to the weakly bent matrix regions between bands. The minimum temperature required to bring about polygonization was established at about 450 "C. Guinier and Tenevin used a focusing Laue X-ray diffraction technique to study polygonization in aluminum single-crystal specimens of 99.99 pct purity. Stretching the crystals 5 pct in tension caused a widening of the focused Laue spots. After heating for 4 hr at 450°C, their method revealed no change in the specimen. Above 450°C polygonization was detected and further annealing near 600°C led to subgrain growth. They concluded that the orientation of the crystal relative to the axis of deformation had no marked effect on polygonization. Gay and Honey-combe4 using an X-ray microbeam technique found that polygonization did not occur in a stretched aluminum crystal heated at 250oC, although some decrease in the yield strength occurred. Southern Peru, es una empresa minera que explota cobre a Tajo Abierto, en cuyo proceso de explotación del mineral se utiliza un sistema mecánico manual de introducción de las barras de acero a los molinos que genera una serie de problemas como el mayor empleo de mano de obra, carguío mecánico manual, inseguridad y la elevada pérdida de producción anual. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo señala el uso del equipo “Fighter Bull" para introducir las barras al molino en el menor tiempo posible. El diseño de este equipo se desarrolló en los Talleres de Maestranza de Toquepala de nuestra empresa Southern Peru Copper Corporation y permite reducir en gran porcentaje las pérdidas de producción de molienda de mineral y no produce riesgos de accidentes de accidentes para los trabajadores.

Discussions are presented of the three phases of the noise reduction program on flight-type coal conveyors. The three phases are identification of noise sources, evaluation of potential noise reduction concepts, and implementation of noise reduction which is intended to reduce conveyor noise to less than 90 dB(A) in the underground mining environment. The major noise sources are impacts of the chain on the tail roller and on the top and bottom decks. A total noise reduction of 11 dB(A) was achieved by using techniques which are applicable to retrofit. These are a vibration isolated tail roller and an isolated wear strip on the return deck. A theoretical model of isolation provided by the isolated tail roller is developed. Appendices are presented which contain information on other potential concepts and additional data generated.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

The paper focuses on construction of a 2.55-km (8,365-ft) long, 2.4-m (8-ft)diameter storm drain tunnel in Evansville, Indiana. The tunnel was driven through saturated soft ground varying from clay to fine sand. The paper presents: an overview of design and design rational including specific EPB machine requirements; the contractor’s proposed and accepted alternative construction methods and TBM design; and construction issues and performance. Some of the key points discussed are the use of the TBM in different operational modes for alternative ground conditions, the effectiveness of dewatering systems, production rates, and issues such as surface settlements and gas.

As cities are growing all over the world, the need for urban transportation facilities are on the rise. Designers (of these facilities) today are faced with a number of constraints for their design, of the most is the space limitation and impact of new construction activities to the community. A typical subway station, as the focus of this paper, is approximately 600 to 1000 feet long, 50 feet wide and 2 to 3 story high. With such a large volume of construction activities, it is easily realized why underground stations are becoming obvious choice for larger cities eventhough the cost could be 2 1/2 to 3 times as much as an aerial station and 4 to 5 times that of an at-grade station [O&apos;Neil et. al.(1977)]. Since cost is an important factor which is always increasing, therefore, the designer should have a good planning, consider alternatives for design and come up with a realistic design with minimum impact to the community. This paper is about the geotechnical considerations that the designer should be aware of. PLANNING A 1977 report [O&apos;Neil et. al.(1977)] on the construction costs for a number of underground subway stations indicate that about 4 0% of the cost is site-controlled, 35% is structural items, and 25% is finish and equipment. It is seen that of opportunity exists for cost savings in the site selection and proper use of the site. Once the site is selected, the cost of construction become controlled by urban conditions at the site, geotechnical conditions, station size and depth. Therefore, the design-solution is very much site-specific. The geotecnical designer should collect the following information at the early phase of the design:

"Desde 1950 en el Perú, el examen pre-ocupacional es un requisito para la inserción laboral dentro de la industria minera. Es por ello que la empresa se encargaba de la realización de la evaluación directamente. Posteriormente se designó dicha labor a un personal no facultativo, conllevando riesgos de salud futuros para el trabajador y por ende, a la producción de la empresa. En este sentido, el presente texto señala algunos de los aspectos de política preventiva de salubridad, donde sea el profesional médico, quien realice una promoción de salud y diagnóstico precoz de la enfermedad, protegiendo así la vitalidad del trabajador. Entre las principales funciones del personal médico a realizar tenemos: las contínuas visitas médicas al lugar del trabajador, desarrollar una permanente capacitación de actividades de higiene industrial, delimitar enfáticamente una orientación preventiva de su trabajo, etc. De otro lado, el trabajo muestra una descripción del formato médico (datos, historia ocupacional, antecedentes patológicos, sintomatología, examen clínico, inmunizaciones, clasificación de actitud) que debe considerar el examinador, para obtener un conocimiento conjunto del estado de salud del postulante y potencializar las capacidades del trabajador para la industria minera. De tal forma que se logra integrar en un solo documento médico, los resultados de los exámenes y se prescinde de la necesidad de contar con grandes archivos, facilitando el seguimiento de los casos."

Augered-Cast-in-Place piles have been used successfully for many deep foundation applications. The four case studies discussed herein describe ACIP pile projects where problems developed during ACIP pile installation requiring changes to the method or sequence of installation. The case studies illustrate the importance of understanding existing subsurface conditions and project constraints when considering the use of this pile type. Ground loosening and over-excavation of soil during the augering process, a significant concern for fine to medium sands and non-plastic silts below the water table, can significantly impact adjacent structures. This risk needs to be evaluated during the pile selection process and generally can be mitigated, but not eliminated, by requiring the use of piling equipment with high torque and slow auger rotation speed to advance the auger with minimum amount of rotation. In some applications where high lateral stresses in the soil are present such as at the base of retaining structures, the use of ACIP piles may not be appropriate if structure movement is unacceptable. On the other hand, ACIP piles have been successfully used to support deep foundations in preconsolidated varved deposits where the new structure was designed to accommodate recompression settlement.

This paper is one of a series comprising the Mineral Industries Survey of the United States, which was begun in 1935. It describes the simple methods of mining and beneficiating manganese ore, in eastern Tennessee and compares these methods with those used elsewhere in the Appalachian region. The report contains general information on manganese to give a clearer understanding of the methods and costs of mining and. beneficiating manganese ore foam a widespread deposit, an in addition presents zone difficulties normally fond in these operations. The marketing, uses, and value of manganese ore are discussed as well as the amount of capital necessary for effective operation on given scale of production, and requirements are outlines for successful operation of manganese, property in this region.
