The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

In 1985, participants of the multi-year Illinois Mine Subsidence Research Program conducted surveys of subsidence effects on crop production from current high-extraction mining methods, selected a site to characterize the profile, strain, fracture development in overburden materials and changes in aquifers produced by subsidence from high-extraction mining, characterized floor materia1 s in three mines, and established bibliographic reference and data base files. The Illinois State Geological Survey, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals and Twin Cities Research Center of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are coordinating State and Federally funded research.

"Over the years many differing approaches have been developed to clearly understand the nature, mode of occurrence, associations and deportment of both free-milling and refractory gold in a wide variety of differing geologic environments and plant products. Many approaches can be taken to characterize the ore which may occur as complex fine grained gold, ultra-fine grained gold, coarse nuggetty gold, complex Asrich refractory gold and double-refractory gold. The approach taken in assessing small drill core composites from Novo Resources Beaton Creek Paleoplacer gold project located in the Pilbara region of Australia was complicated by the nature of the ore, the small amount of sample available from current exploration work, and the gold grade and the grain size distribution. In this case the scope of the study was limited by sample availability although significant amounts of valuable information was also gained. This gold characterization study included the following elements:??Size fraction assays??Ore microscopy??Preparation of heavy mineral concentrates from sized fractions (screening) of crushed or milled head using heavy liquids and Superpan table.??Systematic scans of the heavy mineral concentrate, middling, and tailing fractions using TIMA Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy integrated with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry to provide semi-quantitative elemental analysis of the individual grains found in the sample.The unique methodology employed to detail the gold deportment was the combination of the Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) and the Oxford INCA GSR software. This technique not only allowed us to document the deportment of gold but recognize other associated minerals, which included gersdorffite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite, brannerite and several Rare Earth-bearing minerals.INTRODUCTIONGold deportment studies are commonly carried out on preliminary gold exploration projects in order to determine the various limitations, which may effect processing of the potential ore. This is often because it may be expected that there may be a refractory component to the gold, which may limit physical separation techniques and suggest more costly hydrometallurgical techniques. Often when carrying out gold deportment studies the mineralogical methods may be limited to assuming that the gold will be fine and easily found using standard techniques of optical microscopy or Scanning Electron Microscopy. This may not always be the case as various geological environments may pose their own individual problems to determining the deportment of the gold grains."

Continuing analysis of environmental samples for asbestos content has resulted in the misidentification of non-asbestos amphibole particles as asbestos fibers. These errors have received wide publicity (such as in the asbestos-in-crayon story) and have caused unnecessary reformulation of products. The primary cause of these errors has been a poor understanding of mineralogy and analytical techniques among the many asbestos laboratories that arose following the passage of the AHERA regulations. Presented here is a procedure based on published data that can be used to correctly classify an elongated particle as asbestos or as non-asbestos.

El presente trabajo técnico describe y analiza el proyecto para la implementación de la tecnología de explosivos denominada emulsión bombeable aplicado en el carguío mecanizado de tajos de producción SLS con perforaciones ascendentes y descendentes realizado en mina Cerro Lindo. Este proyecto tiene la finalidad de mejorar los KPIs (Key Performance Indicator) que actualmente maneja la operación. Por ello, el área técnica del sitio ha elaborado un protocolo de implementación, para efectuar la introducción y validación de la propuesta de valor de esta nueva tecnología.

In the last 20 years, In Line Inspection (ILI) using intelligent pigs has become the principal tool used by pipeline operators to assess the condition of their pipelines. New pipelines are normally designed to take intelligent pigs, but many older pipelines require some modifications and special procedures for their inspection. This paper is aimed at practicing engineers and managers of pipelines, or people aspiring to those positions. The paper describes the benefits of ILI and some of the practical issues regarding pipeline preparation and cleaning, choice of inspection tool, running pigs in pipelines, and what to do with the data collected. What are the responsibilities of the Pipeline Engineer ? ? Maintain reliable and acceptable performance of the pipeline in terms of safety and product delivery at economical cost. ? Provide a defined margin of safety for operating the pipeline at its designated pressure. ? Provide timely information on all pipeline defects such that repairs can be carried out according to a managed schedule. What Defects does the Pipeline Operator have to cope with ? A useful record of actual incidents seen in pipelines can be obtained from the web site of the US Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) - http://ops.dot.gov/stats/stats.htm. US pipeline Operators are obliged by Law to report all pipeline incidents exceeding certain threshold criteria (e.g loss of life, escape of product, cost of incident etc). These OPS statistics show that corrosion and third party damage have remained consistently the prime causes of reportable incidents in the US, with similar experience elsewhere. There are several kinds of flaws and defects in pipelines that can lead to failure, the main families being :- ? Metal loss ? Cracks or crack-like defects ? Laminations and other mid-wall defects ? Yanacocha —mina donde por primera vez se desarrolló el uso de la tecnología de membranas (ósmosis inversa) para el tratamiento de efluentes mineros— se constituye en el marco de este estudio sobre tecnologías para tratamiento del agua, en el que se muestra la evolución asociada al proceso de separación sólido/líquido de ultrafiltración y tratamiento de cianuro por el proceso de SO2/aire; y se aborda también la importancia de implementar raincoats y de organizar un proceso de cosecha de agua a través de sistemas de almacenamiento, como reservorios y diques, para asegurar una descarga permanente. Adicionalmente, el estudio observa que los volúmenes de tratamiento y los costos asociados a los permisos de descarga se han visto reducidos porque existe un 100% de recirculación del recurso y todas las tecnologías implementadas están alineadas con los actuales Estándares de Calidad Ambiental (ECA).

O AISI201LN é um aço inoxidável austenítico com teor reduzido de Ni em relação aos tradicionais da série 300 e com adições de Mn e N como estabilizadores da austenita. Os aços da série 200 se propõem a substituir outros inoxidáveis em algumas aplicações com vantagem econômica pela redução do Ni, porém há pouca informação sobre o seu comportamento em temperaturas elevadas. Este trabalho avalia a resistência à tração do AISI 201LN na temperatura ambiente e na faixa de 500ºC a 800ºC e a resistência à fluência na temperatura de 700ºC. Observou-se que, comparado a outros inoxidáveis austeníticos, o material estudado tem resistência à tração comparável em temperatura ambiente e mantem boa relação ductilidade – resistência no intervalo de 500ºC a 800ºC. O aço AISI201LN apresentou desempenho em testes de fluência na temperatura de 700oC comparável ao de outros aços inoxidáveis austeníticos largamente utilizados para aplicações em altas temperatura, incentivando assim a ampliação dos estudos em outros intervalos de tensões e temperaturas.

The Biwabik Iron Formation is a ~1.9 billion year-old sequence of iron-rich sedimentary rocks that was metamorphosed at its eastern- most extent by ~1.1 billion year-old intrusions of the Duluth Complex. The metamorphic recrystallization of iron-formation locally produced iron-rich amphiboles and other fibrous iron-silicate minerals. The presence of these minerals in iron-formation along the eastern part of what is known as the Mesabi Iron Range, and their potential liberation by iron mining has raised environmental health concerns. We describe here the geologic setting and mineralogic composition of the Biwabik Iron Formation in and adjacent to the contact metamorphic aureole of the Duluth Complex. The effects of metamorphism are most pronounced within a few kilometers of the contact, and decrease progressively away from it. The contact aureole has been divided into four metamorphic zones?each characterized by the composition and crystal structure of the metamorphic minerals it contains. The recrystallization of iron-formation to iron-rich amphibole minerals (grunerite and cummingtonite) and iron-pyroxene minerals (hedenbergite and ferrohypersthene) is best developed in zones that are most proximal to the Duluth Complex contact. ©2007 Elsevier Inc. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

"As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for the development and use of Alaska raw materials, the Bureau of Mines is conducting an investigation of deposits f nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad for use in building materials in the Alaska Railroad-belt area. The results of the investigations, to date, indicate that raw materials for the production of brick products are in plentiful supply as clay in the Anchorage area, as fire clay at Sheep Mountain, and as shale in the Healy Creek coal formations near Healy, Alaska.Shale for the production of lightweight aggregate or Haydite occurs near mile 67 on the Glenn Highway, and preliminary tests give excellent results. Physical tests are new in progress on commercial-size concrete building units made with this aggregate. Another shale deposit in the same formation was located at mile 16 on the Matanuska Branch of the Alaska Railroad, and preliminary tests give comparable results.Natural lightweight aggregate in tree form of pumice and pumicite occurs in Katmai National Monument and has been used with excellent results in lightweight-building units in Anchorage and Fairbanks. These deposits will be investigated in more detail by the Bureau of Mines during 1952.One small perlite deposit near Healy, Alaska, showed excellent expanding properties, and the product compares favorably with commercial perlites being used in the States for plaster and concrete aggregates. Additional investigation by the Bureau of Mines to delimit the known occurrence and, if possible, discover others were planned for the 1951 field season.The pumice from Katmai National Monument also was considered for use as a pozzolan in pozzolan-portland concrete. Tests by the Bureau of Reclamation indicate that the pumice sample submitted by the Bureau of Mines would be satisfactory in strength development but is not outstanding. Natural activity is good and is greatly improved by calcination at 1,4000 F. Water requirements and shrinkage also are satisfactory. However, the material is ineffective in reducing expansion owing to alkali-aggregate reaction; and, if reactive aggregate is used to make concrete, it would not insure against excessive expansion. An attempt will, be made during the 1952 field season to delimit pumicite deposits along the Alaska Peninsula more amenable for use in pozzolan-portIand concrete.Because the Railroad belt has such a rigorous climate, insulation for new construction is of prime importance. Luring the Bureau of Mines, investigation of building materials all samples were submitted for chemical analyses as possible sources of raw materials for the production of rock wool, one of the best insulation mediums. Four areas having deposits of the required constitu¬ents were located as follows: Anchorage area, with Potter limestone and argillite; Cantwell-Windy area, with limestone and shale; West Fork of the Chulitna River area, with limestone and agrillite; and Homer-Seldoyla area, with Seldovia limestone and Homer clay. It was planned to take bulk samples of these formations and submit them for testing during the 1951 field season."

After scoping out the objectives of this general report, the report reviews the three assigned main themes addressed by the papers submitted to the session: pile monitoring, testing, and data processing. It focuses on later developments and on issues requiring clarification, thereby identifying topics for potential discussion. Pile Monitoring does not bring much novelty, except for the integration of IT on construction sites. As far as testing, new developments focus on internal pile loading procedures while more confidence is being gained with dynamic and kinematic load tests. Significant advances are noted in the interpretation of data, where variability of results are coped with, loading rate effects are being better addressed, and more routine use of Finite element analyses are observed. Several many older problems remain while new issues emerge from more recent technologies and approaches.

Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

OCI Wyoming mines two flat-lying trona seams that are 3- to 3.5-m- (10- to 11.5-ft-) thick, about10 m (33 ft) apart and 250-m- (820-ft-) deep at its Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding-pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. The use of yield pillars minimizes the stresses transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. However, yielding must not impact the good, long-term stability needed to prevent subsidence for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel.

El proceso de lixiviación es un método para el tratamiento de minerales sulfuros y sulfuros mixtos que consiste en la utilización de un consorcio microbiano acidófilo y una solución rica en cloruro de sodio. En ese sentido, el presente texto destaca el método de la biolixiviación como la alternativa adecuada -en tanto solución ácida (cobre) que contiene el metal en su forma soluble. Dicho proceso se desarrolla en dos etapas: En la primera se usa una solución de cloruro de sodio, el compuesto protector, más un inóculo del consorcio microbiano. La mezcla permite obtener una recuperación de cobre de hasta un 80% basados en pruebas preeliminares. En la segunda etapa, se le agrega un agente oxidante, que no daña a las bacterias, con el fin de disminuir la pasivación del mineral y un inóculo fresco del consorcio y así prolongar la recuperación.
