The computer program introduced in this paper is based on design guidelines developed for selection of support systems used in mine roadways. The support types considered include rock bolts as well as rigid and yieldable steel arches. Using the computer program, the design engineer can select the type, pattern and specifications of the support systems suitable for various roof conditions. The concepts utilized, assumptions made, support selection criteria and description of the computer program, developed for the PC, are included.

Recent advances in X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology have made it possible to conduct powder XRD measurements on samples at high temperatures during reaction. State-of-the-art detectors are now capable of rapidly acquiring diffraction patterns across a wide angular range (typically 120"20) enabling phase transformation rates to be measured directly during sample reaction. In this study, the phase transformations during the reduction of hematite to metallic iron by five per cent hydro ºen in nitrogen gas mixtures, were measured in situ between 500 - 700 C. Complete X-ray diffraction patterns were acquired within 15 seconds every one minute, enabling direct measurement of the transient phase abundances during the reaction. The data were quantitatively analysed by the Rietveld method to yield the abundances of hematite, magnetite, wustite and metallic iron, as functions of time during the reduction process. A first-order reactions-in-series model was proposed, and the reaction rate constants and activation energy were determined from the time-dependent phase abundance data.

Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tons of which 22 million tons was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (north and south) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/h, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (define?measure?analyse ?improve?control), which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for ongoing fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of unblasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance with plan for actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but this is now being replaced with a fully automated drill data management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods for the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire drill and blast process.

The history of mill liners has evolved over time and this paper tracks the changes and development of liner technology. It provides an overview of the primary types of liners, the design and the materials of construction. The design of a mill liner is driven by application, materials of construction, casting technology and handling issues. The choice of solid steel, grid liners, rubber or composites and magnetic liners is based on many factors.The methods used for monitoring wear and predicting eventual change out time are many and varied. The contribution of discrete element modeling (DEM) analysis in predicting wear profile is discussed.Mill trajectory and DEM software programs are used with great effect to predict the effect of lifter height, face angle, high low lifters or mill speed. In the field, trial and operational experience is used or improvements/design concepts at one operation are applied to another. Broken mill lifters, accentuated wear and other problems can be better understood using hardness testing, chemical analysis and photo micrograph analysis of pearlitic or martensitic structure along with fracture face observations. This forms a part of the typical root cause analysis. However given correct and sound liner and lifter, feed and discharge design media selection, and materials of construction, the majority of premature liner or bolting failure is normally attributed to incorrect operational methods such as excessive high ball to feed ratio, incorrect mill speed relating to lifter ball throw, incorrect media selection, "tramp" material entering the mill charge from upstream or recirculating process and understanding the specific mill operation in question.It is hoped that this paper will benefit mill operators who are faced with challenges of improving wear life and at the same time optimizing mill throughput and performance.CITATION:Connelly, D and Thompson, C, 2013. Kemi cardboard mill is founded on the alluvial bed of Kemi river at the north-eastern cost of Botnic Culf in Northern Finland. The alluvium consists of sandy and silty layers underlain by thick medium dense silty moraine layer. The first cardboard machine, having a belt width of 7,4 m, was constructed in 1972 on 7,5 to 9,5 m long wedge-shaped precast driven piles. Because of the excessive differential settlements and sometimes unexpected dynamic malfunctioning of the machine it was decided to strengthen the foundation before installing the partly new machine and increasing the running speed from 500 to 750 m/min. Piling was done under extremly strick limitations concerning space, vibrations, settlements, dust etc. Extra vertical support was made by using 23...25 long x-form steel piles driven by compressed air pile hammer down to rock. The piles were held together with old piles by a conctrete frame with diagonals, which made the total system - machine - foundation frame, piles and ground - ridgid enough to avoid resonance during dynamic loading.

Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. "This paper presents a case history of evaluating the stability of a distressed earth bund and rectification measures carried out. A 5.45 km long, 7m high earth bund for drinking water storage was constructed in Andhra Pradesh. During construction of the bund following were observed – (a) a longitudinal crack at the downstream side (b) Bund on the downstream side along the crack settled to a max of 700 mm and (c) downstream rock toe level area raised by heave up to 175 mm. Investigation of the events made important contributions to the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of large earthworks of this type. It was found that the variation in subsoil strata was not addressed during the execution.After careful evaluation, stone columns were recommended as a suitable ground improvement technique. Stone columns were used as a reinforcement to improve the shearing resistance of foundation and in turn ensure stability. By using and applying advanced geotechnical engineering analysis tools and modelling techniques, earth bund and its foundation was analysed and examined against failure by slope instability. Stone column design was carried out using in-house computer program GEOSTONECOL and stability of earth bund was analysed using TALREN software. Earth bund construction was completed after ground improvement and is performing satisfactorily.INTRODUCTIONIn order to supply water during summer season, Government of Andhra Pradesh decided to construct a 7m high and 5.45km long earth bund summer storage tank. It was one of the largest earth bund summer storage tanks in whole of South India at the time of its construction. During construction, the earth bund has undergone sudden distresses. Investigation of the series of events occurred during construction has made important contributions to the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of large earthworks of this type. This paper presents the reasons for earth bund failure, slope stability assessment of the distressed earth bund and recommendation of stone column as a suitable ground improvement remediation technique.DESCRIPTION OF STUDY SITEThe characteristics of the original construction are briefly described as follows. A shallow cut-off trench was excavated below existing ground level at the centreline of bund as shown in Fig. 1. Below the base of the trench a cut-off grout curtain was installed. Upstream and downstream shell earth filling was carried out using Clayey Sand ‘SC’ type soil. At some locations, bottom of cut-off trench has reached as deep as 12m from the existing ground level."

This bulletin is the fourth in the series of petroleum bibliographies being published by the Bureau of Mines, the three preceding, Bulletins 149, 165, and 180, being compilations for the years 1915, 1916, and 1917, respectively. In this bulletin the same general plan has been followed in arranging the references, but a few changes and additions have been made in the classification, the more important changes being in the classes "Geology and Origin" and "Refining and Refineries." C. W. MERRILL*-Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably, a matter of vital interest.

In order to search for a more economical and effective roasting additive for extracting vanadium from stone coal and solve the question of the disposal of PVC waste, PVC waste was proposed as a novel roasting additive to enhance extraction of vanadium from stone coal and realize the comprehensive utilization of resources. By adding this roasting additive, the leaching rate of vanadium reached 94.5% under the conditions that the PVC waste addition was 10 wt%, the roasting temperature was 800 °C, the roasting time was 1 h, the sulfuric acid concentration was 15 vol%, the liquid-to-solid ratio was 1.5 cm3 /g, the leaching temperature was 95 °C, and leaching time was 4 h, which increased by 8.4% compared with that of blank roasting. The thermodynamics calculation showed that the decomposition reaction of mica was performed easier with the participation of HCl produced by pyrolysis of PVC. Meanwhile, The SEM-EDS and aperture test analyses demonstrated that more cracks and voids appeared in the roasted sample by roasting with PVC waste, which could facilitate the release and extraction of vanadium. Additionally, the TG-DSC analyses indicated that PVC could provide large amounts of heat for the roasting process to promote the decarbonization and roasting efficiency of stone coal because of its high calorific value.

"SynopsisAccording to the overlying rock strength and thickness of 10 shallow coal seams in China, the strata are classified into four types: weak and laminated strata (hereinafter referred to as WL), weak and massive strata (WM), strong and laminated strata (SL), and strong and massive strata (SM). The four types of strata, together with longwall panel height (M), panel length (L), and seam depth (H) are factors that influence the loads on hydraulic power supports. Principal component analysis was used to study the seven influencing factors. It turns out that seam depth (H) is multicollinear with WL, WM, SL, and SM. Thus the enumerated seven factors are divided into two models. In Model 1, six factors; panel height, panel length, and layer thickness of the four type strata are involved. In Model 2, three factors; panel height, panel length, and seam depth are included. Using multivariate regression analysis, two equations to calculate loads on supports are obtained for each model. The equations were applied to shallow coal seams. The equation of Model 1 is more accurate than that of Model 2, but Model 2 could be further used in deep coal seams. The equations were coded through VB programming to simplify the calculation.IntroductionTo ensure coal production in the long term, the focus of coal mining has been gradually shifted to the western areas of China in recent years due to rich coal resources in this region. Most of the coal seams in this area are shallow but the support loads are abnormally high. In these circumstances, the chock loads estimating methods used in the past do not work. If the rated working resistance of a support is larger than needed, the shield is unable to fully perform, while a lower working resistance would lead to accidents like shield crushing or even casualties. This problem is frequently found in shallow coal seams such as Shenfu-Dongsheng, Yulin, Tuha, Lingwu etc. (Zhang, 2011). Thus, to ensure safety and efficiency during mining, the estimation of support loads and selection of supports are of great significance."
