"The deposition of tailings under water is considered to be one of the most environmentally promising and potentially cost effective methods to reduce or eliminate acid mine drainage from tailings. One of the concerns of subaqueous deposition has been that metals may leach into the cover waters, thereby increasing aqueous metal concentrations to higher than acceptable limits. This potential was seen to have an even greater possibility for impact when the tailings are deposited under acidic lake water.The following paper summarizes the results of subaqueous tailings pilot column test work conducted to determine the effects of subaqueously deposited tailings on lake water and tailings pore water. Two types of tailings were tested: high sulphide tailings (pyrrhotite concentrate), and low sulphide tailings (end of pipe slime tailings).Data was collected from five columns over a 13 month test period. The results indicated that a stagnant I 000 mm water cover was capable of maintaining the underlying tailings in a reducing condition. The upwards diffusion of pore water resulted in a pH increase in the waters overlying the thickened pyrrhotite tailings and the pyrrhotite tailings with a shallow cover of substrate. A conductivity gradient between the tailings and the water cover caused a diffusion of salts upwards into the overlying water column. Precipitation noted at the tailings water interface may be related to the precipitation of ferric oxyhydroxides, which resulted in a decrease in Fe concentrations noted in the water cover. Other metal concentrations did not exhibit significant increases in the water cover. A sulphate concentration gradient between the tailings and the water cover may have caused the diffusion of SQ4 from the tailings into the water cover."

"Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."

El presente texto describe el panorama geográfico, causas y proceso de derrumbe del cerro "Cóndor Sencca", ubicado en el departamento de Apurímac. En 1945, un deslizamiento de roca se precipitó desde una ladera del río Mantaro, originando una represa de 101 metros de alto. Producto de las filtraciones de la reserva se provocó derrumbes en la parte alta de la reserva, ocasionando un descubrimiento de los depósitos sedimentarios en la laguna. En este sentido, se encontró que las causas posibles del derrumbamiento era la pérdida de estabilidad producida por el río y los sucesivos resbalamientos de masas de roca, cuyas masas perdieron estabilidad al desecarse la arcilla que rellenaba las junturas durante la época de sequías. Así, el daño que las lagunas pudieran ocasionar a las instalaciones hidroeléctricas se convierte en un factor de riesgo permanente. Por tanto, es recomendable que las represas, canales y demás estructuras de una planta, sean diseñadas dentro de las limitaciones económicas y contra los fenómenos hidraúlicos catastróficos, como el ocurrido en 1945.

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). Survey programs convert and export survey data to Google Earth as points and polygons. Programs that extract data from Google Earth include; points, lineations, polylines, and polygons. The RockWorks/EarthApps collection is developed by RockWare Incorporated based in Golden, Colorado.

El litio se considera un elemento estratégico debido a sus diversos usos en industrias tales como la electrónica o la automotriz. Por ello, se debe entender cuáles son los ambientes geológicos (pegmatitas, ambientes volcánicos, ambientes metamórficos y cuencas endorreicas en relación a salares y salmueras) asociados donde alberguen los minerales de litio (silicatos, sales y/o salmueras). Para llegar a ello, se deben conocer las características macroscópicas geológicas de campo y fundamentar su interpretación por medio del apoyo de la instrumentación en los tipos de análisis químicos, mineralógicos, las características microscópicas petrográficas y la caracterización puntual de algunas muestras por la microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM). Por tanto, en esta publicación se presentan datos preliminares de ocurrencias con valores anómalos de litio en afloramientos de rocas volcánicas, intrusivas (graníticas), aplíticas y metamórficas dentro de las unidades morfo estructurales del Altiplano y la Cordillera Oriental, ubicadas en las regiones de Cusco y Puno. En la zona de Corani (Puno) afloran rocas volcánicas tipo tobas de lapilli con altos contenidos de litio entre 2815 a 3070 ppm, cuya presencia se relaciona a los minerales de micas de litio, denominado lepidolita, como constituyentes inmersas en agregados granoblásticos de cloritas y silicatos, perteneciente al miembro Sapanuta de la formación Quenamari. Por su parte, en la zona de Ocongate (Cusco) las ocurrencias con anomalías de litio (1096 ppm) se encuentran asociados en clinocloros y/o amorfos asociados como constituyente dentro de cuerpos de areniscas, con presencia de vetas de cuarzo, sulfatos de cobre, óxidos de hierro, trazas de pirita y calcopirita, pertenecientes a la formación Ananea.

Morgan Gold Mine, dry crushing has only been practiced to a very limited extent in Australasia, and elsewhere it might be said to belong to industries other than mining Its sphere of usefulness depends on the fact that the' product is delivered in a dry state without the separation of the finer particles from the coarser to any appreciable extent, thus enabling the following advantages to be achieved with different ores.

Enmarcamos este documento en la presentación del programa Moquegua Emerge, cuyo éxito se viene dando de la mano con éxito de las instituciones involucradas, tanto públicas, privadas y organizaciones sociales. Mostraremos con ejemplos, el diseño y puesta en marcha de la metodología propuesta y el camino que se está siguiendo para asegurar la sostenibilidad del impacto a largo plazo. Las conclusiones del mismo nos llevan a repensar la forma en la que se viene diseñando y ejecutando diversos programas sociales, de forma un tanto aislada o sin llegar a generar la sostenibilidad que tanto se espera.

"GENERALThe Outokumpu Company is today an important European producer of metals from its own mines: copper nickel cobalt, ferro chrome and zinc being the main products. In 1972 about 4 million tons of ore was hoisted from eleven mines.Outokumpu Oy has gained experiences on the various aspects of on line computer control since 1968. This knowledge has been combined to develop a standard computer control package for concentrator control. Before the development of computer control package was started Outokumpu Oy had three large computer control systems. The first system was at the Pyhasalmi Concentrator, thee second at the LokkolaPlant, and the installation of the third system at the Vuonos Concentrator was just started.The characteristics of general computer software packages - both control and executive ones - were thus well-known as well as the practical usage of control theory. Furthermore Outokumpu had developed the Courier analyzer which included a so-called minicomputer. This project had given experience both 1n totally self made real tire executives and in computer hardware and peripheral d=vices. The instrumentation of the Outokumpu concentrators was designed and installed traditionally by the engineers of Outokumpu themselves."

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

Um dos tratamentos superficiais mais conhecidos é a nitretação a plasma, que consiste basicamente na introdução de nitrogênio na superfície da ferramenta, na forma de nitretos de elementos de liga, em solução sólida, a fim de criar uma camada protetora que aumenta a vida útil do material. A nitretação a plasma permite o controle da camada formada através do ajuste de parâmetros como temperatura, mistura gasosa e tempo de tratamento. Porém para ferramentas mais complexas é comumente utilizado um novo processo de nitretação, a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica que tem como principal diferencial o aquecimento homogêneo das peças, evitando assim a heterogeneidade da camada nitretada. Outra vantagem é que neste processo não é comum ocorrer o acumulo de plasma o que evita o efeito de borda. Neste trabalho, será analisada a importância da menor rugosidade superficial aliada a dureza superficial no comportamento tribológico do material no processo de nitretação a plasma com e sem gaiola catódica. O resultado dos ensaios tribológicos demonstraram que o incremento de dureza associado a uma menor rugosidade superficial obtido para a amostra nitretada com gaiola catódica promoveu uma redução no coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo. A rugosidade superficial média para as amostras nitretadas com gaiola catódica foi menor que as nitretadas via processo convencional, aproximando-se do valor obtido para às amostras que foram polidas.

El presente texto señala las posibilidades a futuro de incrementar la producción cuprífera del Perú. Los dos países desarrollados con grandes reservas de cobre son Estados Unidos y Canadá y estos no tienen yacimientos interesantes, ya que los mismos o tienen leyes muy bajas o sus reservas no son comparables a los prospectos mineros del Perú, Chile, Panamá, etc. De otro lado, se clasifica las reservas con el precio del cobre. Los precios se determinan de acuerdo a la información de las memorias anuales de las empresas propietarjas; así como las declaraciones de los funcionarios de las empresas y de las autoridades gubernamentales en el caso de los países en desarrollo.

Introduction In situ leaching (ISL) is an alternative method of mining uranium from deposits that are low-grade, deeplying, and water-saturated. ISL recovers uranium by transporting fluids through rock rather than by moving rock, a concept the Chinese developed over 2000 years ago for water production. This technique eventually evolved into production systems for oil, gas, sulfur, and salt. More recently, in situ methods have been developed to produce shale oil, gasified coal, geothermal energy, uranium, and copper. ISL uranium operations began in the early 1960s with Sabine Production Co. in south Texas. About the same time, Utah Construction and Mining Co. (Anderson and Richie, 1968) started similar operations in Wyoming's Shirley Basin. During the 1970s, six commercial operations were started in south Texas, (USBM, 1978) and a number of pilot operations were in various stages of development in Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. This paper reviews some of the technical and economic aspects of the ISL process and briefly discusses key subsurface engineering functions as¬sociated with well pattern design and operation. While flow characteristics of a deposit are of prime importance, the following information is also needed: Depth, ore grade, total contained metal, ore thickness, flow conductivity (permeability), void space in rock (porosity), mineral type and distribution, natural groundwater flow, and structural features. Solvent selection, which is important to the economic success of the operation, takes these factors into account: Composition, rate of metal solubilization, interaction with gangue minerals, impact on rock permeability, impact on materials of construction, trace metal solubilization, cost, availability, and handling problems. Overview of ISL An ISL operation consists of these functions (Fig. 1): 1. Chemicals to dissolve and maintain uranium in solution are prepared at the surface extraction facility. 2. A set of injection wells forces the solvent into rock pores of fractures using pressure in excess of the deposit's hydrostatic pressure. 3. Solvent travels through the rock and reacts with uranium minerals to dissolve them. The solvent usually consists of an oxidant and a complexing agent in an acidic or alkaline medium. 4. A set of production wells creates a low-pressure sump where metal-enriched solution is collected for transport to the surface. 5. The enriched solution is processed to recover uranium and to separate the leaching solution for recycling through the system. The economic performance of an in situ operation may be estimated by integrating these related factors: (1) the flow rate of solution processed through the system, (2) rates of fluid injection and production from wells, (3) the rate of mineral solubilization in the liquid phase, and (4) the volume of rock swept by the fluid. As these factors reveal, ISL involves the technical disciplines of petroleum engineering, ore deposit geology, and hydrometallurgical processing. Wellfield Design Just as mineral engineers use drillhole information to plan a conventional mine, in situ engineers use similar information to design a well field. Numerical simulation of coal pi1lar loading has traditionally been a difficult task due to the unique and highly variable properties of coal and the inability of numerical procedures to duplicate these properties. This simulation was based upon material properties developed from laboratory tests of coal cubes and examined against coal pillar strength data developed from actual underground measurements. The coal cube measurements indicated the coal followed a nonlinear Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion. The in situ measurements showed that a pillar yield zone developed similar to Wilson's hypothesis and, at high confinements, the pillar core seemed to followed a pseudo-ductile behavior. The strain-softening material model, based on a 1inear Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion, simulated coal cube and pillar behavior at moderate load conditions. However, at high loads the models were inaccurate, due to an inadequate failure mechanism and/or to changes in the pillar constraints at the coalbed interface.

During the last 100 years, the submerged arc furnace has been one of the most amazing diversified melting units. These furnaces have found their application in more than 20 different main industrial areas such as iron, ferro alloy, chemical industry, lead, zinc, copper, refractory, titanium oxide, recycling, phosphorus etc. Such an evolution was only possible because of tremendous efforts in research and development and due to the large range of design solutions. The worldwide strong competition also forced the industry and plant suppliers to develop highly efficient, economically balanced units in optimized sizes and with long lifetimes, to adapt to the market conditions. Regarding the environment, the plants improved significantly in terms of water treatment plants and off-gas treatments as well as on site recycling units. This paper will give a short overview regarding the history of the furnace and the latest developments in today?s main application fields: ferro alloys, non-ferrous, special application and recycling. In addition new activities in research and developments are briefly discussed.
