In the past fifteen to twenty years, the use of drilled piers to support high capacities in coastal plain deposits has become more and more common. With improved construction techniques and better understanding of pier behavior, drilled shafts with capacities of 200 to 500 tons are not unusual. The purpose of this presentation is to review several drilled pier installations from North Carolina to north-east Florida as a means of illustrating the different types of design concepts and installation techniques which are presently being used. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The information in this presentation was obtained from work performed by many individuals and companies. The section on limestone socket caissons in South Carolina is an abridged version of a paper prepared by Rob Smith and Neil Gilbert of Law Engineering's Charlotte, North Carolina office, and is used with permission. THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-All of these notices have been revised, and some of then have been more or less completely prepared, by me. To those which contain more particularly the expression of my personal feeling, my initials have been appended. The labor of preparing or editing these paragraphs has been in many respects both welcome and interesting, on the one hand, and sorrowful, on the other. In going through the list, I have repeatedly felt like one who, visiting the Morgue, suddenly comes upon the pale face of a dear friend, of whose death lie was not aware ; and, even when this fact was known to me, the work of recording it has brought upon me a flood of recollections, almost preventing the discharge of that official duty. The list for 1907 seems to me to he peculiarly sad, comprising, as it does, so many sudden deaths by violence or accident, so many veterans, removed too soon, and so many young men whose early departure impoverishes the future, even more than the present. Probably, this feeling on my part is largely due to the circumstance that the increased membership of the Institute necessarily in¬volves an increase of the annual death-list. Probably, also, it is connected with the circumstance that during the first years of the history of the Institute-say from 1871 to 1880-it was joined by men of all ages, and that the death-rate is consequently now above the average which would result from the normal annual addition, principally of young men. And finally, I must admit that, as one of the original members of the Institute, and practically connected with it for nearly thirty-seven years as Acting President, President or Secretary, I am peculiarly impressed and depressed by the successive deaths of those who were my associates in the years of its early struggles and triumphs. I do not wish to inflict upon my younger colleagues the melancholy reflections of an increasingly lonesome old man. In fact, my prevailing mood concerning the Institute is not at all melancholy, but triumphant and hopeful. If I may be permitted to preach at all, I would enforce, from the texts given below, a moral which many of them declare so forcibly as to preclude the necessity of expository enforcements-namely, the duty of every one of us, old or young, to give to his brethren, as he goes along, and without waiting for some future occasion for a comprehensive and monumental contribution to technical literature, the results of his observation and experience. In addition to a range of pyrometallurgical options, Mintek specialises in DC arc furnace technology and has pilot plant facilities up to 5.6 MVA, as well as a strong base in process and arc modelling. Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

El artículo da cuenta de una investigación orientada a demostrar los beneficios del mecanismo de conminución en una cama de partículas, como ocurre en los rodillos de molienda de alta presión (HPGR) o molinos de rodillos de alta presión (HPRM). Se ha investigado el uso de los HPGR de laboratorio para mejorar la eficiencia de separación de los minerales con alto contenido de dolomita, ultra alto contenido de arcilla y alto contenido de arcilla (kaolinita) presentes en una mena de apatita en operaciones subsiguientes «aguas abajo» de beneficio de diferentes minerales de fosfato de origen sedimentario. La investigación incluye estudios de caracterización de minerales de fosfato dolomítico, datos del modelo físico aplicado por PerUsa EnviroMet, Inc. de HPGR para desarrollar información preliminar de conminución; y evaluaciones de HPGR de laboratorio para determinar los parámetros de chancado (velocidades de alimentación; velocidad y separación de los rodillos; torque, presión y energía aplicables).

Belt conveyors are widely used in materials handling industries. The bulk materials which can be transported include ores, coal, earth, grain, limestone, wood chips, fertilizer components such as potash and many others. Along with the new technology development and enhanced industrial automation requirements, belt conveyor instrumentation has also been modernized to improve conveyor availability and performance. Traditionally, belt conveyors are equipped with emergency pull cord switches to shut the conveyor down, misalignment switches to signal the belt offline condition, speed sensors to detect the belt slippage, and level switches to prevent material plugging in the discharge chute. Belt rip detectors are also normally provided for long belt conveyors. As a rule, equipment condition monitoring is not automated at most operating facilities, but is performed manually by maintenance staff via time-based surveillance. The new generation of condition monitoring instrumentation and control equipment can be successfully utilized to design a reliable, cost-effective, and centralized monitoring system, capable of monitoring a wide variety of mechanical equipment. The implementation of the condition monitoring automated system can provide continual monitoring of the plant equipment to ensure safe operation of the equipment to its required capacity. Any abnormal behavior of the motors, gear reducers and pulleys can be analyzed, alarmed, and recorded immediately, so problems can be detected and resolved before critical components failure. Therefore, the current trend is to provide the belt conveyors with condition monitoring system in addition to the traditional instrumentation, where temperature probes and vibration sensors can be installed on motors, gear reducers and all pulleys. Another innovative development is a three-in-one type belt rip detector which combines laser, tray and cord type detection together to ensure a prompt belt tear indication. The purpose of this paper is to present the latest development of belt conveyor instrumentation and introduce the application of newly developed instruments.

Every man-hour of work performed in and about the coal mines of the United States had a 2-percent heavier death load from accidents in 1938 than in 1937. This is an unorthodox way of stating that the death rate per million man-hours of exposure or employment was 2 percent higher in 1938 than in 1937, increasing from 1.74 to 1.78. Thus the average miner had a 2-percent greater chance of being killed in 1938 than he had in 1937. The average quantity of coal resulting from 1 man-hour of work increased 3.6 percent -from 0.615 ton in 1937 to 0.637 ton in 1938. The production of the average ton of coal was accompanied by a slightly smaller loss of life in 1938 than in 1937, the accident rate being 2.793 per million tons in 1938 compared with 2.833 in 1937.

An evaluation is presented of the Bureau of Mines process for the recovery of metal and mineral values from municipal incinerator residues. This process employs standard mineral beneficiation techniques and is operating on a pilot-plant scale of 1,000 pounds of incinerator residue feed per hour. Products from this separation process include ferrous, aluminum, and copper-zinc scrap, and colorless and colored glass. Cost estimates were prepared for four plant sizes. The estimated capital and operating costs For the four plants follow: [ ] It is assumed that the separation plant is located adjacent to a municipal incinerator. Provision is made, however, for part of the residue feed to be delivered by truck so that one large separation plant can be used for residue from more than one incinerator.

"Since about 2002 there has been significant capital cost escalation, not inflation, in the mining industry causing turmoil for successful project completion. Project capital costs have more than doubled and some cases tripled in this time period. This has rendered many projects to be economically challenged and in some cases not viable. In addition higher than expected operating costs have further adversely affected project metrics such as NPV and IRR. Capital cost increases for projects have been widely reported globally. This current paper reviews three items. Firstly, why such capital increases and the various components that make up capital estimates. Secondly, it looks at reasons why preliminary estimates, for example at scoping and pre-feasibility level, have been lower than the ultimate constructed costs. Such increases and differences in estimates have caused major problems for mine builders and have led to a general nervousness on the part of those providing project finance. Thirdly, what discipline is needed in project execution in an attempt to mitigate such capital increases. The paper will hopefully give a better understanding of the various issues and factors involved for those in the mining industry.INTRODUCTION The years 2012 and 2013 were a turbulent time for the mining industry. The European economic crisis, politics, metal price volatility and a wave of changes of CEO´s in some of the major mining companies all contributed to a challenging couple of years. Two issues stood out. First, the huge increases reported in the capital costs of projects, where increases of 100% - 300% were not uncommon and in some cases exceeded that during the first decade of the 21st century. Second, company write downs related to takeovers during the boom and the stabilization/correction in commodity prices. These have led to great uncertainty, made it difficult (or impossible) to raise project financing costs, contributed to the changes at CEO level and placed many projects either on hold or cancelled altogether. It is commonplace now to read of companies talking of reduced capital expenditure and making a complete review of their projects and operations to contain costs."

MARSA forma parte de los yacimientos vetiformes de la franja metalogenética aurífera del Batolito de Pataz, y políticamente se encuentra ubicado en la provincia de Pataz, La Libertad. En este sentido, el presente texto describe los resultados del programa de exploración 2010-2011, donde se dio el descubrimiento del primer cuerpo mineralizado del yacimiento, el cuerpo Esperanza, entre otras ocurrencias. Asimismo, se muestra que los cuerpos mineralizados de la franja metalogenética de Pataz, se formarian en estructuras de primer orden con evidencias de reactivacion, cuyo sistema estructural funciona como entrampamiento y en varias etapas de mineralizacion.

"Conzal Mine was not meeting production targets in 2013, and it was established that this was caused by the inability of the load haul dump machines (LHDs) to tram the required tonnages. An investigation of the LHD productivity was therefore conducted to identify the inhibiting factors. This was accomplished by carrying out a literature review on LHD operations to gain in-depth knowledge and conducting observations in the working environment. The relevant information and data on the LHD type used at Conzal was also acquired.The major inhibitor was found to be excessively long tramming distances in all the sections of the mine. The one-way tramming distances were all significantly greater than the 90 m set in the mine’s code of practice (COP), with the Main Shafts section having the longest average one-way tramming distance of 260 m. The other inhibitor was LHD utilization, which in 2013 was only 47% against a target of 70%. Simulation of the LHD operation, taking these two factors into account, showed that production could be increased by more than 100%. As a result, it was recommended that conveyor belts should be extended regularly in order to keep tramming distances within the recommended one-way distance of 90 m. In addition, utilization can be improved by minimizing employee absenteeism as well as by modifying the travelling routes such that LHDs do not encounter unnecessary delays.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc. La investigación muestra un "Estudio Comparativo de las Concesiones de Infraestructura de Transporte Terrestre de la Bimodal Central", comparando entre los dos modos de transporte terrestre o vías de comunicación concesionadas de la Carretera Central y el Ferrocarril del Centro, es decir de la Bimodal Central, con respecto a su influencia en los servicios de transporte de carga. Este estudio determinó el actual volumen de tráfico, y la destrucción acelerada de la vía por los vehículos pesados en la Carretera Central. Igualmente analizó cómo el nivel de congestión viene alterando las decisiones empresariales tanto por el tiempo total empleado en el movimiento como en los costos logísticos incrementados, por lo que se necesita introducir alternativas modales para revelar prioridades políticas en el desarrollo vial nacional. A partir de este análisis se determinó qué modo de transporte usar para llevar mercancías como los graneles sólidos -minerales, insumos de la minería y cemento-, es decir la competencia intermodal existe en el transporte de carga en la Bimodal Central, integrando productores y consumidores que en particular compiten en la cadena comercial hacia Lima Metropolitana y hacia otro modo en común, en el Océano Pacífico, que es el Puerto del Callao.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. La minéralisation aurifère est encaissée par des formations de fer d’âge Néoarchéen appartenant aux roches volcanosédimentaire du Groupe de Prince Albert; la minéralisation est associée à de la silicification (veines de quartz) ainsi qu’à la sulfidation de la magnétite et d’autre minéraux riches en Fe.Les résultats de la géochronologie U-Pb conventionnelle sur une unité de dacite concordante au sein de la séquence volcanosédimentaire ainsi que d’une intrusion de diorite qui les recoupe indiquent que ces roches supracrustales ont un âge de ~2.7 Ga. Certains des âges U-Pb obtenus à partir de la monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) et des âges Re-Os retournés par l’arsénopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma), en association avec l’âge indiqué par une isochrone à données dispersées « errochron » secondaire Pb-Pb pour la pyrite et l’arsénopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggèrent que la minéralisation aurifère associée à la sulfidation de la formation de fer s’est formée vers ~1815 Ma, avant que l’événement tectonométamorphique (D2TB/(M2TB) de niveau élevé (faciès des amphibolites supérieures) affecte le secteur de Three Bluffs. An extensive series of tests was carried out on a ball mill-rake classifier circuit in the New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. concentrator. The data were used to develop a mathematical model of the operation of a rake classifier and this model has been used in the simulation of the performance of a ball mill-rake classifier circuit on a digital computer. As a result of this simulation it has been possible to develop a technique for the optimization and control of a circuit which includes these units.

En 1922, se instalaron las primeras compresoras de 80 H. P para la obtención de gasolina natural en Brea y Pariñas, a través de la utilización del gas producido en los separadores de baterias de crudo. Sin embargo, esta cifra se elevó a 22, 000 h.p, demandando una red de 5 plantas de compresión-absorción que funcionan en conjunto con una Planta Central de destilación-estabilización y dos estaciones compresoras auxiliares. En este punto, la intención del trabajo es mostrar el proceso de logro de gasolina natural en el Perú, y el sistema de distribución de gas seco, a partir de la conexión con pozos productores, las plantas de compresión-absorción, equipo de compresores y el equipo de enfriamiento general.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a soldabilidade do aço da classe API 5L X80 de fabricação nacional quanto ao trincamento pelo hidrogênio. Para isto, o aço foi soldado pelo processo arame tubular usando como metal de adição o arame AWS E110-MC com 1,6 mm de diâmetro e como gás de proteção a mistura 75% Argônio+25%CO2. Foram adotados quatro níveis de energia de soldagem, 0,7 kJ/mm, 1,10kJ/mm, 1,60 kJ/mm e 2,00 kJ/mm e o ensaio de soldabilidade utilizado foi o WIC. Para as quatro energia de soldagem foi constatada a presença de trincas que iniciavam na região de grãos grosseiros da ZTA (RGGZTA) e se pronunciavam para a zona fundida (ZF). A ZTA apresentou um comportamento microestrutural com presença de bainita e a ZF com predominância de ferrita acicular. A microdureza na ZF foi superior em relação às demais regiões.

The Humphrey's spiral is a static gravity separation device which cannot be adjusted to match short-term variations that occur in the feed. Any disturbance in the feed grade, per cent solids or flow rate affects substantially the recovery and grade of concentrate. Such variations must be minimized in order to maintain the desired rate of production and quality of the product for which the installation has been designed. A study has been performed in which the foregoing assertions were quantified. The feed grade, per cent solids, flow rate and particle size were varied independently. Ore from Carol Lake, Nfld., was used throughout the experiments. This consisted of specular hematite and magnetite in a silica gangue.

El presente trabajo cuenta la experiencia, metodología y tecnología desarrollada en varios sitios por más de media década, donde en minas con tal nivel de producción y tecnología, se podría pensar que se encuentra todo bajo control; sin embargo, existen oportunidades de mejora para ir a un siguiente nivel al que llamamos Excelencia Operacional Digital. Como se relató, las tecnologías pueden parecer muy completas o robustas, pero normalmente no son adoptadas por los trabajadores. Esta falta de involucramiento tiene diversas causas tales como falta de empatía de parte de los proveedores de tecnología, poco entendimiento e involucramiento de los trabajadores o bajo entusiasmo que causa la tecnología en el día a día.

The paper point out the Galvanox process developed at the University of British to leach concentrates containing copper sulfide mixtures, mainly chalcopyrite. This patented process is based primarily on the galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite and pyrite, which allows chalcopyrite to be leached preferentially over pyrite. Under the correct process conditions, near-complete extraction of copper can be reached typically within twelve hours. This study will also show that this process is suitable to treat low grade copper concentrates (bulk concentrates) taking advantage of the selectively of chalcopyrite over pyrite, and the use of pyrite as a catalyst.

Esta ciencia trata de las relaciones entre las diversas formas de la energía, mostrando cuantitativamente los efectos que experimenta el complejo materia-energía cuando en él se realizaalgún cambio. Por ello, es fácil observar que muchos laboratorios tanto de Europa como de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, realizan estudios no sólo para completar las tablas de propiedades termodinámicas de las sustancias químicas, ya existentes, sino también para revisar los datos que antes se tenían de éstas."

Las especies minerales son los sujetos del quehacer metalúrgico -en tanto, el diseño, la optimización operativa y el monitoreo periódico de una planta de tratamiento requieren de un adecuado conocimiento de las características de los minerales involucrados. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala las particularidades de los minerales (tamaño de grano, composición porcentual y grado de liberación) y su determinación cuantitativa a través de técnicas que ostentan sofisticación, donde la primera característica no se determina mediante técnicas no microscópicas, mientras que las dos últimas son factibles de establecer mediante la microscopía óptica, utilizando la metodología desarrollada por uno de los autores. Dicha metodología es compatible con el entorno instrumental y tecnológico de la mediana y pequeña minería, aunque puede ser utilizada con igual beneficio por la gran minería. Asimismo se presenta dos ejemplos actuales de cómo la aplicación de estudios microscópicos al proceso metalúrgico que se utiliza en la mina Atacocha, un yacimiento polimetálico ubicado en los Andes centrales del Perú, se desarrolla exitosamente en la optimización del proceso.
