Maybe it?s because, like the older woman, the older materials have to make a determined effort to keep themselves looking young and attractive. T at?s just about the situation with which the lead industry is laced. We have to make a determined effort to keep lead looking young and attractive to industry. However, there is one difference and it is important, Lead can not only be kept looking young, but it can, in fact, actually be kept young, This results from two things. First, industry and technology are constantly changing. For example, we have known for years that the density of lead makes it ideal to stop gamma rays, but it is only recently that atomic fission as a source of gamma radiation has become an important tool of industry, That makes old knowledge about lead useful in developing a new market for it.

The interest in using halogens for extracting precious metals from ores has increased due to changes In ore characteristics, environmental concerns and regulations. The rediscovery of halogen leaching capability has been the topic of these and other writers1-30. Much work has been done on the performance of bromine, chlorine and iodine5-29. Of these, bromine and chlorine look most promising. Iodine is quite expensive and sometimes forms an Insoluble film on a precious metal surface22,23. Little experimental work has been published on the relative performance of bromine versus chlorine. The Pourbaix diagrams for the halide leach system (see Fig. 1-4) Indicates a significant stability advantage for bromine In forming complex ions with gold. This should result In greater extraction of gold under similar leach conditions and Is evaluated In this work. The regeneration of halogen from a spent leech solution is a critical requirement for an environmentally acceptable halogen leach process. Bromide can be oxidized In-situ to bromine ~ adding chlorine or ozone2,31. Bromide like chloride can be oxidized In an electrochemical cell to produce halogen on demand 13,15,17. Bromine clearly offers a number of possible regeneration pathways. This work strives to compare the relative ability of chlorine and bromine to extract gold from partially and fully oxidized ores. A commercially pressure oxidized sample was evaluated under a number of experimental conditions. The autoclave feed ore from the same mill was also evaluated after complete oxidation In a laboratory autoclave.

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a

Over a period of eight years (1989 through 1997) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a nonevaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). The following three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No. 4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10 to 20 min of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down, and more than 100 min of additional residence time is required to produce percentage increases equivalent to what was achieved in the first 10 to 20 min. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove gindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275°C to 325°C (525°F to 61 5 OF) range.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. A novel methodology to estimate gold recovery by gravity is presented. The methodology makes use of a population balance model which represents gold liberation, breakage and classification behaviour and applies pre-concentration and recovery performance curves to gravity-recoverable gold to predict overall recovery. Derivation of the necessary parameters is explained and demonstrated using data from an actual gravity circuit and one projected application. The methodology makes it possible to estimate the performance of circuits with large gold circulating loads and relatively low unit recoveries (e.g. jigs), or with high recoveries on a bleed of the circulating load (e.g. Knelson concentrators).

INTRODUCTION The inelastic stress-strain behavior of rocks has urged engineers to seek for the possible application of plasticity to engineering pro¬jects such as tunnels, oil wells, dams, etc. for a long time. Early efforts in this direction have tentatively used the classical theories to solve some axisymmetric problems, in which the rocks were treated as perfectly plastic and nonfrictional materials (Talobre, J. A., 1957). Meanwhile, one of the fundamental assumptions is that the volume strain of elastoplastic material is purely elastic. Drucker and Prager (1952) developed a perfectly plastic and frictional model with a generalized form of Mohr-Coulomb law, which serves as both failure criterion and yield criterion. Although the associated flow rule gives unacceptably large dilatancy, this model is a very important step to deal with the frictional behavior of geological materials. As a further step, Roscoe et al (1963) and Schofield and Wroth (1968) proposed a Cam-clay model, which accounts for the yielding before the material reaches a failure envelope and reflects the plastic volume strain as a strain hardening factor, and the open end of the Drucker-Prager envelope is capped by a family of yield surfaces, the envelope is made conforming with crit¬ical void ratio line. The proposed shapes of the cap have been based on experimental data and on convenience of mathematical descrip¬tions. Drucker, Gibson and Henkel (1957) introduced a spherical cap for soils, while in Cam-clay model the cap is semi-logarithmic yield function derived from the result of triaxial tests. DiMaggio and Sandler (1971) proposed an elliptical model for sand, in which the hardening function depends exponentially on plastic strain. Sandler et al (1976) used a plane cap model to express the behavior of a wide range of geological materials of which the nonlinear hysteretic nature is significant. Mizuno and Chen (1982) illustrated the physical mean¬ing of cap models and their adaption to finite element calculation. In recent years, Carroll et al (1972, 1980) have studied the com¬paction of porous materials under hydrostatic pressure and discussed the mechanism of the nonlinear response thoroughly. Analytical and numerical analysis of the hollow sphere model by Curran and Carroll (1979) predicted an initial yielding surface, dependent on the initial porosity, and showed a strong coupling between hydrostatic and deviatoric effects. All these main features from the abovementioned theoretical research are visualized by the experimental data on Boise sandstone (1984). The combination of such previous work would be logically the construction of a plasticity model for porous rocks which, following the tradition of assigning the name of birthplace to a special model, is called Cal-Rock model (Carrol, M. M., 1984). The results of triaxial tests along different loading paths reveal the compaction characteristics for deviatoric and hydrostatic stress separately. the fitting of the nonlinear stress-strain curves leads to a construction of yield surfaces. Moreover, an uniaxial strain test gives the strength envelope which is the critical state line. The whole model is composed in the frame of elasticity theory. The concept and representation of plasticity used here are in the spirit of Naghdi¬Casey theory (Casey and Naghdi, 1984 and 1984, Naghdi and Trapp, 1975). In order to find the way of using such a plasticity model in engineering problems, the stress field in a thick-walled cylinder of porous material is calculated. This is an axisymmetrical problem with plane strain, which is an idealization of oil well in an infinite medium. Because the constitutive relation is highly nonlinear, a numerical method has been utilized to obtain the solution. CONSTRUCTION OF CAL-ROCK MODEL (1). Elastic-plastic constitutive equations The basic assumption is that the yield surface in stress space depends on one parameter, namely the plastic volume strain, as the data on Boise sandstone suggested. Starting from this point, the theory formulated in stress space and in strain space by Naghdi and his co-workers (1975, 1981) can be simplified. The simplified yield function is

The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer is suited for a variety of bulk material handling systems, especially those operating with stockpiles in excess of 30,000 tons. The bucketwheel stacker/reclaimer, although relatively new in the United States (first introduced here in 1964), has been successfully used in European countries since the early 1940's. Basically the machine is the outgrowth of the bucketwheel earth excavator and the traveling tripper boom type stacker. Since their introduction here they have achieved wide acceptance, especially with coal fired power plants. (Figures 1, 2, and 3.) The stacker reclaimer has been utilized in barge and ship loading/unloading facilities, and in the material handling systems for steel mills, where it has been used to stack and reclaim iron ore at rates up to 6000 tph stacking and 4000 tph reclaiming. They have also been employed at mine mouth power plants for the handling and storing of the plant fuel supply and to help balance the mining rate with the fuel consumption rate.

INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5'/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. DEVELOPMENT The ramp access system lends itself well to conduct¬ing the several phases of development concurrently. Vermiculite is the mineralogical name generally applied to a group of hydrated, trioctahedral ferromagnesian aluminum platty or micaceous silicate minerals. In microscopic particles the mineral as mineral is differentiated from montmorillonite by a higher Si:AI ratio of approximately 3:l and a higher layer charge and higher cation exchange capacities. Commercial vermiculite, the vermiculite which is mined, beneficiated, and discussed in this chapter, is an important industrial mineral which is formed by the alteration of macroscopic particles of biotite and iron-bearing phlogopite. In natural form it has the size and shape of mica, while possessing the ion exchangeable properties of zeolites and some clays. Within the internal structure of vermiculite lie water molecules, which when rapidly heated to high temperature, transform into steam causing the vermiculite particles to increase in volume. This process of thermal exfoliation produces a lightweight product which finds use in various construction products, agriculture, horticulture, and other industrial applications. In exfoliated form it has the low density and biological inertness of expanded perlite, while maintaining a chemically active surface. Most of the uses of vermiculite are for the thermally exfoliated material. In addition, the cation exchange potential of vermiculite and its layer-silicate structure are properties which can be used as the basis for numerous products including intumescent coatings and gaskets, inorganic films, and the treatment of nuclear and other toxic waste. When chemically and physically modified, it possesses some properties common to organoclays and synthetic compounds. In high purity concentrates and manufactured products, these properties can be altered and optimized in applications to produce superior performance. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Vermiculite was first described as a mineral by Thomas H. Webb in 1824. Webb believed vermiculite to be a variety of talc and described its diagnostic property of thermal exfoliation thusly: "If subjected to the flame of a blowpipe, or that of a common lamp, it expands and shoots out into a variety of fanciful forms, resembling most generally small worms having the vermicular motion exact." Observing that with one exception, all commercial vermiculite has formed by the alteration of iron-bearing phlogopite, a simple definition of vermiculite might be the alteration product of trioctahedral micas, macroscopic particles of which display marked exfoliation when heated rapidly to temperatures above 374°C (the critical temperature of water). The first vermiculite described was found near Worcester, MA, but it was later pointed out by Brush (1866) that vermiculite had been known for some time in Japan as a children's novelty. Because the techniques for mineral analysis were somewhat primitive com- pared to those routinely available today, and because the structure and crystal chemistry of the micas and related minerals were not widely understood, the early literature generated at least 20 "new" minerals which were nothing more than variations in the color and chemistry displayed by vermiculite. Trade names such as Dugarlite, Mandolitem, Strong-LiteTM, and Zonolitem are sometimes used to denote commercial vermiculite, thermally exfoliated vermiculite and their products. Vermiculite particles resemble mica and vary in color from colorless through tan and green to black, depending on the chemical composition. Most physical and optical properties are close to those of biotite, with perfect basal cleavage, hardness between 1.5 and 2.5 Mohs, and specific gravity between 2.2 to 2.8. Fine-sized particles will feel talcose, especially when wet. However, for commercial vermiculite the diagnostic test is that of thermal exfoliation. Vermiculite can display a wide range of compositions, depending on the composition of the original mica and the change of chemistry during weathering and ion exchange. Chemical data for some commercial vermiculites are given in [Table 1]. There are numerous analyses for vermiculite given in the literature, and the analyses of vermiculites from commercial deposits will fall within the range indicated by the average analysis in the table. Many analyses separate the adsorbed water (H2OP) from crystalline water and water as hydroxyl (H20+). The basis of separation of adsorbed water is generally considered to be 100°C. However, hydrate water within the vermiculite interlayer begins to be lost at 75°C and lower. Therefore, measured water content and loss on ignition are combined in the table as H20[total].

A safe and precise mineral separation alternative to heavy liquids is being used for mineral sands exploration on large scale orebodies. The separation process, Magstream®, uses ferro-fluids and magnetic and centrifugal forces to produce precise split points over a range of specific gravities from 1.5 to 18.0 g/cc. This paper describes a commercial scale exploration program treating, roughly, 90 samples per day in Senegal (West Africa). Separation results comparing Magstream® and conventional heavy-liquid separation are presented.

Experiments were carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064- by 1.5-m bubble column equipped with a Mottporous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and airflow rate are presented and discussed.

The exploration geologist is frequently confronted with the problem of allocating his resources, i.e., exploration effort, among various areas. Although geologic, financial and logistic considerations influence the allocations, no objective criterion is usually given which determines the optimal allocation. Maximizing the gain in information, subject to the constraint of a limited exploration budget, is used as the objective criterion to allocate reconnaissance effort. The information function, I(x), quantifies the expected gain in information, where x is the scale of exploration. To calculate the information function the following data are necessary: 1. The probability that an area contains a target must be estimated. 2. For each scale of exploration, four probabilities must be estimated: the probability that an anomaly is produced by the target; the probability that an anomaly is not produced by the target; the probability that an anomaly is produced by a barren area (false signal); and the probability that an anomaly is not produced by a barren area. Alternatively, the barren area can be replaced by other targets. To illustrate the allocation model, the optimal number of line kilometers/line spacing per area is determined for an aeromagnetic survey for iron in Egypt.

Federal and State surface coal mining regulations require special handling of prime soil materials which result in additional costs, and no actual benefit when prime and non-prime soils are similar. The Coteau Properties Company proposes to mix both prime and non-prime topsoil and subsoils at the Freedom Mine in Mercer County, North Dakota, based on an analysis of soil physical and chemical characteristics which show these materials to be comparable.

The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. Conveyor belt haulage has become the preferred mainline transport method in underground coal mining, especially for multi-unit mines. Proper designs for belts (width and speed) and surge bins (placement, capacity, and discharge rate) are necessary to achieve efficient mine haul- age. Two computer simulation models, CMBCS and BELTSIM, available for designing these parameters were compared. These comparisons included modeling, input data requirements, statistical flexibility, accuracy of simulated loading, and execution time.

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy's program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

Controlled release systems delivering the required concentration of an effective bactericide over an extended time period have been developed by The BFGoodrich Company's ProMac® Systems group. The ProMac system is site-specific and includes a four-step approach to controlling acid mine drainage (AMD): (1) Diagnosing the problem, (2) Prescribing the treatment, (3) Supervising the application of controlled release bactericides, and (4) Honitoring the success of applied treatment. The success of the ProMac system is evidenced by improved water quality, healthy vegetation, a reduction in levels of acidophilic thiobacillus, and a corresponding increase in population of beneficial microorganisms.

Since the early 1950's exploration in the Yukon Territory, Canada, has been confined largely to Selwyn basin where at least five large stratiform or massive sulfide Pb-Zn deposits have been discovered. The five ore bodies total nearly 100 million tons of 10-16% combined Pb-Zn with 1-3 oz./ton Ag. The only deposit currently in production is the Anvil Mine operating at 8,000 tons per day. Beginning in 1972, exploration in the Mackenzie Mountains, east of Selwyn basin and west of Mackenzie arch, resulted in finds of Mississippi Valley type Zn-Pb mineralization in a belt of Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks (Figure 1). Four districts have been located and intensive exploration by numerous Canadian and Arnerican mining companies is currently in progress over a length of 400 miles in the carbonate belt. The consensus is that a major new Zn-Pb province may be taking shape.

With today's high energy costs per million BTU's, far greater emphasis is placed on increasing thermodynamic efficiency in the use of energy. America has long since discarded its previous golden age of "low cost energy" in the past ten years. Energy costs are now a very significant percentage of operating expense in industrial operations. Public utilities have felt the same influences of increasing costs in energy for the generation of electricity. Not only has the input energy expense increased seriously, but as pointed out by Blackmore in a paper, fuel costs were 53.4% of the total operating costs for American Electric Power Company.
