OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. An investigation into the source mechanism of mining-induced seismic activity plays a vital role in understanding the various modes of failure observed in the underground deep-level South African mining environment. The seismic events data for this study was captured by the mine-wide seismic system operating at Kloof Gold Mine. This system comprises 40 4.5 Hz tri-axial geophones sampling at 6 kHz installed at locations that surround the stopes mining the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Main Reef (MR) and Kloof Reef (KR). A set of 103,753 mining-related seismic events (-3.0≤ ML ≤2.7) that occurred during 2017 and 2018 was selected for this study. The mining depth of these seismic events ranges from 1600 – 4200 m; most located close to stopes mining the VCR ore body. The main criteria used to select a subset of events for detailed analysis were the number of stations that recorded the seismic event and the azimuthal distribution of the sensors.

This study examined the potential of mixing rotary kiln fines (RK fines), a waste product generated when limestone is converted to lime (CaO), with acid producing mine waste to provide 1) short-term mitigation by neutralizing acid produced by iron sulfide oxidation and 2) long-term mitigation by facilitating the passivation of iron sulfide mineral surfaces. Five loadings of RK fines were mixed with 75 g of Duluth Complex rock to produce neutralization potential (NP) added: acid potential (AP) quotients of 0,0.11,0.22,0.66 and 1.1. The mixtures were subjected to wet-dry cycling laboratory testing for 585 weeks. The rock alone produced acidic drainage, with pH decreasing below 4 after about 20 weeks of reaction and ultimately reaching the approximate range of 3.3 to 3.5; sulfate release did not decrease over time. The RK fines elevated pH and inhibited sulfate release for time periods which increased with the mass of RK fines present. The pH of drainage from the 0.11 quotient (NP added1AP) loading decreased below 6.0 after 75 weeks of dissolution and decreased to 3.6 after 117 weeks, at which time the reactor was terminated. The duplicate 0.22 quotient loadings of RK fines decreased below 6.0 after 95 and 170 weeks. The former was terminated after 117 weeks, and the latter reached a minimum pH of 2.8 after 512 weeks. Drainage pH from the 0.66 quotient decreased below 6 after 581 weeks. For the drainages which acidified, the cumulative calcium release prior to pH decreasing below 6.0 was 92 to 103 percent of that initially present as calcium carbonateloxide in the RK fines. The pH of drainage from the 1.1 quotient typically remained above 8.0 throughout the period of record. Sulfate concentrations in the drainages decreased while the neutralizing fraction of the RK fines was present, but increased after this fraction was depleted.

Glass is one of man's most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860's resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer's economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material's potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.

Increasing transportation costs, clean air regulations and the decreasing availability of landfill space are factors in the increased interest in the utilization of low cost disposal sites for coal combustion residues (CCR). Inactive surface and underground coal mines can satisfy the conditions for stable CCR disposal sites, and subsurface CCR injection can be beneficial in reducing the amount of acid mine drainage (AMD) often produced at such sites. The material is expected to add alkalinity to the subsurface environment and to decrease the permeability and porosity of the buried spoil. Both mechanisms can reduce the amount of acid normally generated at a mine site. The Bureau of Mines is cooperating with an independent coal company in a test of subsurface injection of a mixture of fly ash, from conventional power plants or from fluidized bed combustion (FBC) , with AMD sludge into a reclaimed surface mine. Changes in water quality parameters and the concentration of heavy metals in water samples from wells and seeps are being used to assess the effect of CCR injection. The preliminary results discussed here indicate that improvement in subsurface water quality was related to fly ash injection and that components of the fly ash were stable in the acid environment.

Underground coal mining machinery utilizes portable electric sables, "trailing cables." to obtain power from load centers or distribution boxes. Cables are frequently damaged since mobile equipment, poor lighting, and restricted space are inherent to coal mining operations. Normally, the damage is repaired by splicing--the joining of one or more severed conductors and replacing insulation and jacket. Figure 1 illustrates a typical single conductor splice. Although the repair seems simple, difficulty of the splicing process is exemplified by the many safety hazards and frequent production delays that result from defective splices. Forty-two cable splice related injuries were reported to the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1972 and 1973. Additionally, 17 splices related fires were reported in the three year period prior to December 1972. Assuming the damaged area is quickly located, an average splice time for a two conductor cable is twenty minutes. Some operators estimate this delay is incurred once per day per operating section. If one ton per minute is averaged throughout the shift, each unit could loose 4800 tons per year from splice delays. An estimated cost for materials and labor to make a splice is $20. The expenditure could result in a $4800 annual cost per section. The estimated expense does not include wages of other personnel waiting for the repair to be completed. Nevertheless, labor and materials cost is minor compared to the income lost from decreased production.

A roof bolting drilling operation in an underground coal mine can expose the operator to a high concentration of respirable coal and crystalline silica dusts (smaller than 10 µm). Overexposure of high-level quartz dust for a roof bolter operator can lead to the development of silicosis in as little as three years [1]. This study proposes a drilling control algorithm for the bolt hole drilling process. This algorithm can be integrated into a current drilling control system on the roof bolter machinery and is expected to reduce the generation of respirable dust while enhancing the energy efficiency of the roof bolter machine. In addition, the drilling efficiency and bit condition can be evaluated while drilling based on the real-time feedback parameters. This capability enables the algorithm to ensure the drilling is performed under a relatively high energy efficiency with less respirable dust generation and to avoid drilling with an excessively worn bit that can cause bit clogging or steel buckling failure.

A Denver Autometrics Particle Size Monitor, PSM-400, was installed at Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. in October 1988. The PSM-400 measures the grind product's particle size and percent solids. The particle size is used to control grind size by automatically adjusting mill feed rate. The PSM's continuous response to ore changes has improved grind product uniformity and mill throughput. Metallurgical testing has shown the PSM's accuracy to be +/-1 % + 150 µm (100 mesh).

The Malmberget Division of LKAB is located 70 km north of the arctic circle and has about 2000 employees. The dominating products are sinter feed concentrate and pellets. A general flow sheet for the operation is shown in Figure 1. About 20 percent of the ore body consists of hematite, which is mined separately and processed into sinter feed concentrate. That pert of the ore consisting of magnetite passes through a dry cobbing plant. The robbing process includes crushing, screening and dry magnetic separation. The entire cobbing product is used as feed for the wet concentrator. After rod mill grinding and magnetic separation the concentrated slurry is classified. The coarse fraction (+200 mesh) becomes sinter feed concentrate and the slime fraction after further ball mill grinding and magnetic separation, becomes pelletizing feed. A small quantity of the magnetite ore is processed into special iron-rich products in the the wet concentrator. Two types of pelletizing plant are used, shaft furnace and straight grate. This paper will deal only with experience gained at the straight grate plant.

J.R. Atkinson, office engineer to Kennecott Copper Corp., summarized data on the Mineral Park area [Wallapai (Chloride) Mining District, Mohave County, Arizona, Fig. 1] and submitted it to the New York office in 1950. He recommended an examination. Weston Bourret, a Kennecott geologist, accompanied by B.S. Butler, the well known former US Geological Survey geologist, examined the larger of two hydrothermally altered areas in Mineral Park that same year. Bourret recommended that the property be optioned and mapped. Georges Ordonez, Kennecott's chief geologist, after a field examination, agreed with Bourret's conclusions At the end of the summer of 1951, Annan Cook (another Kennecott geologist) accompanied Ordonez to the property prior to starting a mapping program. At Ithaca Peak, the structure, alteration, and reddish-brown coloring in leached cavities-hematite, jarosite, and goethite with minor copper staining - made an interesting target. The Peak, which has since been mined, was a Laramide quartz monzonite porphyry grading into quartz porphyry, penetrating Precambrian rocks. Turquoise had been mined from several workings on the Peak. Surrounding the central area of alteration, but mainly to the northwest, there were many long-abandoned underground workings mined for zinc, lead, gold, silver, and copper. To the west of Ithaca Peak within the main area of alteration, surface evidence of a chum drill hole suggested interest in the disseminated mineralization probably prior to World War II. A topographic and geologic survey of the altered Ithaca Peak area was initiated by Cook in September 1951. He was assisted by Richard Vosburgh, field engineer, and by four geologists: Charles Goddard, III, Donlon LoBionda, Keith Martin, and A.T. Stone. When Cook returned to New York, Vosburgh was left in charge. Mapping continued and diamond drilling took place during the winter of 1951-1952. Drill sites were selected entirely on the basis of surface geology. Five drill holes, including a flat hole, located around the flanks of Ithaca Peak, averaged about 183 m (600 ft) in length. A sixth hole caved at less than 60 m (200 ft). The best values obtained were in the first hole (-45°): 90 m (300 ft) averaged 0.62% copper and 103 m (337 ft) averaged 0.041% molybdenum. In another hole, 43 m (142 ft) averaged 1.09% copper and 0:023% molybdenum. The values of copper and molybdenum in these two holes were generally higher than in the remaining holes, although molybdenum values were always around 0.024% or better. The New York office decided, however, to abandon the project even though the remaining field crew of three had recommended more drilling.

The Hutti Greenstone belt, located in the northern side of Dharwar Craton, India, contains several promising gold fields. It is predominantly composed of meta-volcanics with minor intercalations of meta-sedimentaries. Alkali-SiO2 and Zr-P2O5 diagrams, immobile element trends, and an iron-rich trend on the AFM diagram indicate that the volcanic suite is low-potassium tholeiitic basalt. The lower Mg number, MgO-TiO2, MgO-Ni, and Ni-Zr plots reveal that the basalt was derived from a fractionated, highly evolved magma generated by 10-20% melting of the mantle at 1100°C and 5 kb pressure. The chemical variations suggest that the Hutti metabasalt represents volcanic arc rocks generated at a converging plate margin.

The addition of dolomite to iron ore pellets improves their high-temperature reduction properties primarily by increasing their reducibility and raising their softening temperature. In this study we prepared dolomite-fluxed pellets from three different concentrates; Hibbing, a magnetic taconite, Knob Lake, an earthy hematite; and Carol Lake, a mixture of specular hematite with magnetite. The composition n of the concentrates is given in Table I. The pellets were subjected to standard physical tests and the following reduction tests: low temperature degradation, swelling, softening, and thermogravimetric analysis. Petrographic examination and electron microprobe analysis allowed us to evaluate the effect of composition and firing on the phase assemblage. Further, we were able to interpret the test results in terms of chemistry and microstructure. This approach enabled us to determine which fluxed composition best suited each of the concentrates.

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project's inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

Mine planning at Consolidation Coal Company's (Consol) Glenharold Mine in North Dakota is being constrained by environ¬mental concerns that did not exist when the mine opened in 1965. One such concern which developed in the mid-1970's is the impact of mining on woodlands that are considered impor¬tant wildlife habitat. To better coordinate mine planning with permitting, a cooperative task force was created to evaluate woodlands for their wild¬life habitat potential. The task force included representatives from Consol and state and federal agencies. This cooperative process is seen as a method of communication between industry and government and as a way of developing decision-making tools for mine planners and regulatory agencies.

An unusually pure grade of rutile and several grades of aplite rock are produced in a unique mining and mineral dressing operation in Hanover County, Virginia. The ore body is an aplite rock of gnessic structure, having a sari ace exposure extending over several hundred acres, heavily leathered and containing rutile, ilmenite, and other titanium and iron minerals. The physical nature and mineral composition of the ore body has permitted the use of a relatively economical and unusual processing circuit. The flowsheet was designed to take full advantage of the remarkable liberation of the minerals at relatively coarse rinds. It permits flexibility in changing the product mix, and maintains high levels of purity in both rutile and aplite rack. The mineral processing is discussed in some detail below.

It is doubtful if anyone knows precisely how many U.S. coal miners have been killed by roof falls. In 1931, 51 miners were killed by falls or rock in every 10-day period (Paul, 1). Roley (2) indicated that from 1882 to 1945, over 3,700 men were killed by roof falls in Illinois alone. During this 63-year period, roof falls accounted for 47.6 percent of the coal mine accident fatalities. Similarly, Price and Nolting (3) reported that during the 10-year period beginning in 1937, roof falls claimed over 50 percent of the lives lost in West Virginia coal mines. Over 150 miners died under fallen rock in West Virginia alone, in each of those years. Certainly, the statistics have improved over the years. The Theodore Barry Report of 1971 (4) indicated that during, the previous 4 years, fewer than 100 miners per year lost their lives to roof falls--in the entire United States. The improvement is less remarkable when it is realized that the accident rate has declined only as the number of miners employed underground has declined. The TRW Report (4) pointed out that although the number of fatalities in underground coal mining (from all causes) had been cut in half from 1956 to 1965, the fatality rate per thousand miners had remained virtually constant. The decreased accident rate was due not to a reduction in hazards but to a reduction in work force. Roof falls still claim approximately 50 percent of the lives lost in underground coal mines. Considering the increased underground production of coal which must result from our energy crisis, the environmentalists' pressure against strip mining, and our inevitably diminishing supply of strippable coal, it is apparent that some means must be found to reduce the number of lives claimed by coal mine roof falls.
