The leaching of gold in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants in an autoclave has been investigated. Also studied are thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of the ammonia leaching of gold and silver. The variables studied included stirring speed, temperature, concentration of ammonia, ammonium, and various anions. Arrhenius activation energy values were found to be between 47.1 kJ/mol and 86.2 kJ/mol depending upon the kinds of oxidants used. An electrochemical reaction controlling mechanism has been proposed for the dissolution reaction. The leaching behavior of gold and silver from various ores in ammoniacal solutions containing various oxidants has also been investigated. The samples tested included sulfidic as well as carbonaceous refractory ores. The recoveries of gold and silver from these refractory ores were better than 96% within 2-3 hours of leaching time.

Previous research on continuous mining operations has shown that significant interactions exist between dust-control parameter application and the resulting respirable dust levels. However, simply increasing the level of the controls does not guarantee a reduction in respirable dust levels. Full-scale laboratory tests are being conducted to provide information to longwall operators that would assist them in selecting control parameters to reduce dust levels for mine-specific conditions. The interactions between face air velocity, shearer water quantity, drum water spray pressure, external water spray pressure and spray system design were evaluated in a simulated 2.13-m (7 ft) coal seam for two cutting directions. Locations around and downwind of the shearer were monitored to evaluate relative changes in respirable dust levels as a function of each control parameter.

In the real world of coal mining, the bottom line for almost every support project decision is economic (i.e., what is it going to cost?). Up to this point, I have discussed the methods to improve the performance of typical support projects by better installation, materials, and techniques, thus lowering the impact of the bottom line cost. In this chapter, 1 shall explore what costs are relevant in mining construction, and how these costs are developed. The chapter centers around two major discussions: (I) developing cost accounting techniques, and (2) cost-estimating procedures for support construction. Each focuses on the fundamentals of practical cost considerations necessary for decisions on construction projects underground. Since cost accounting, economics, and investment planning are all subjects which warrant complete discussions on their own, this chapter will focus on distilling the important concepts required by a planning engineer into an easily understandable presentation.

This paper discusses the challenges to complete the construction of two large underground Metro stations and connecting tunnels in the Tren Urbano system. The completion work includes the installation of specialized mechanical and electrical systems, extensive architectural finishing as well as coordination with systemwide power and controls installed by others. A unique feature of this project was the simultaneous design and construction of the structural/civil/architectural/mechanical/electrical works by KKZ separately from the power and control systems under the management of the Owner, its consultants and other contractors. Completion of this project comes after almost six years of continuous design and construction in a dense urban environment. The project was confronted by many challenges that could only be met with the combined efforts of the Joint Venture team in close cooperation with the Owner and its System wide Contractor. This paper will also address many of the major design and construction changes implemented to suit the Owner’s requirements.

A key component of the Inland Feeder Project is the Riverside Badlands Tunnel, a7.9-mile stretch subjected to high internal and external hydraulic pressures passing beneath highly eroded hills in a semi rural environment. The tunnel presented significant design and management challenges to the project team. This paper describes the formula for project success used to manage the design of this complex pressure tunnel, from team member selection to the completion of all contract documents, on schedule and below budget. The project team dealt with sensitive regional and local community issues and won the trust of the community. The team included participation by senior management and recognized experts from inception to finish. The team worked diligently to build quality into design and adopted a claims avoidance approach to management and preparation of documents.

Metallurgical Accounting in the mineral processing industry transforms accumulated process data, including flow rates and assays, into a coherent information format. This is used to rapidly provide production reporting and key performance indications. A fully comprehensive and coherency of available data must be a component of any system expected to accomplish reconciliation in the mass balancing process. Quality issues are thus improved with such desired methods via a mass-balancing engine utilizing the results of measurements acquired by various on-line sensors, analyzers, and sophisticated laboratory equipment. Metallurgical Accounting, when accomplished through such an engine, provides high value information in a simple, straightforward, and simplified manner. Exceptional utility is then transparently available to authorized personnel for access to metallurgical accounting reports, production reports, mass balance results, performance indicators, and so on. This paper discusses how such information can be used to "drilldown" into each result set by consulting the data hierarchy to evaluate and validate calculations and input data used to produce the specific results being queried. The power of such a system resides in the full and true integration of all production and laboratory data. What is integrated are the data thus acquired via a single user interface, a single database, a single configuration tool, etc. From this comes the derivation of contextual information and its maintenance. It is possible to reduce metallurgical accounting and production reporting from possibly hours or even days to a matter of minutes. The result is maximization of information reliability and availability from masses of otherwise discrete and difficult to access key data.

Horizontal stresses are caused by global platetectonic forces. During 1995 alone they were largely responsible for the closing of two longwall mines in the United States. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions at the headgate caused by horizontal-stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements that were made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal-stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather it is 20o in the stress shadow of the gob. Computerized financial models can be used in all phases of the mineral industry from setting exploration targets to projecting profit plans for producing mines. In this presentation, I will use the example of an exploration company entering a new district to trace the application of financial models through the following intermediate phases. 1. Hypothetical analysis and strategy 2. First encounter of mineralization 3. Preliminary drill results - decision process 4. Feasibility studies 5. Post-feasibility negotiations 6. Producing mine 7. Acquisition of producing mines or mineral properties. I will conclude with a brief discussion of the mechanics of the financial models that we use at Wright Engineers Limited. As we progress through the seven phases, the availability and accuracy of the data will parallel the complexity and application of the financial models. However, the same basic financial models are utilized throughout the seven phases. I will begin by suggesting that the exploration group is somewhat autonomous and has the mandate to explore in Western Canada.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate trends in exploration expenditures of a selected group of mining companies for the interval 1968 through 1971. The paper also compares these trends with other financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and comments on the implications of these trends. Although a four-year interval is hardly enough time to establish a long-range set of trends from which operating rules can be derived, the fact that the four years selected are in the immediate past gives some sense of relevance to the matter of exploration expenditures at the present time and in the near future. The sample under study here consists of 21 mining companies. Of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the extraction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining; for example, from oil and gas sates, Also, no companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in this study. Although this definition held up fairly well when studying this list in 1968, the strict application of this definition became more difficult through the years up to the present time. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business, and either deriving their income or planning to derive a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining. All of the major raw materials (silica, soda ash, limestone, and feldspar) needed to manufacture most grades of glass are found in Wyoming. Additional advantages for the manufacture of glass include the state's geographic location, a well-developed transportation network, a favorable tax structure (no corporate or personal-income tax), and low energy costs. Inadequate local markets and prohibitive transportation costs to other markets have been the major obstacles to developing a glass industry in Wyoming, the least- populated state in the nation. The Rocky Mountain region only recently became a major market for glass, especially for the Colorado Front Range and Utah's Wasatch Front. Currently, changing costs of the production of glass, an increased market for con- tainer glass in the Colorado Front Range, and innovative production and transportation ideas (e.g., production of selected types of glass and bulk shipments of specification-glass pellets) favor developing a glass plant in Wyoming. Thus, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) and other state agencies have been conducting studies and contacting investors in an effort to attract a glass-manufacturing plant to the state. Between 1987 and 1993, three locations of silica-sand and -rock deposits were studied in Wyoming (Cassa, Plumbago Creek, and John Blue). Funding was provided by the WSGS operating budget and local and state Department of Commerce economic- development grants. The reports on these areas were released between 1988 and 1993. In 1988-89, a California-based company conducted additional drilling and feasibility studies and prepared to construct a glass plant in Cheyenne, using the Cassa silica source. However, due to losses incurred by some of their other investments, the company did not proceed. In 1997, the Wyoming Science, Technology, and Energy Administration (STEA) contracted a market study for glass manufactured in Wyoming, using information provided by the WSGS. The STEA contacted several major glass producers, and a major glass-producing company began feasibility studies in January 1998, for the construction of a glass plant. In June 1998, bids to supply brown beer bottles to the Budweiser brewery northeast of Fort Collins, Colorado, were submitted by at least two companies that were considering glass-plant sites in Wyoming.

In terms of their hydrogeology, most open pit mines can be divided into three categories. There are mines that occur above the water table, mines that extend below the water table in high permeability rocks and mines that extend below the water table in low permeability, tight formations. Mines that occur above the water table do not experience major ground water seepage. It may some- times be necessary to construct in-pit trenches and sumps to remove water from precipitation. But dewatering or enhanced drainage measures are typically not required. Open pits that extend below the water table in high permeability rocks find it cost-effective to pump from dewatering wells. This is done to lower the water table below the working pit floors, creating dry or depressurized conditions in advance of mining. If the rocks in the mining area are homogenous, complete drainage of the entire mining area may be achievable by pumping from wells. In this case, it is not necessary to consider drain- age enhancement. However, there are many open pits and excava- [ ] tions that can lower the water table using conventional wells, but for which drainage enhancement is also an integral part of the dewatering system. The Sleeper Mine in Nevada is an example of this. Hydraulic layering at Sleeper has prevented downward drainage of water as the main water table is lowered. In addition, there are many mines that have areas of low permeability wall rocks that do not freely drain as the surrounding water table is lowered. Ground water seepage also creates difficulties in mines that occur below the water table but for which lowering of the water table using conventional wells is not feasible because of the overall low permeability of the rocks. The volumes of water involved may be small. However, it is necessary to deal with all of the water inside the pit as mining proceeds. It is not possible to dissipate pore pressures in the wall rocks in advance of excavation.

In 1975 bituminous coal and lignite production in the United States reached an all-time high of 637 million tons, an increase of 6 percent over production in 1974. The output, valued at $11.9 billion f.o.b. mines, was produced at 5,100 mines in 24 states (6). Coal mining is the largest mining industry in Alabama. Production from Alabama's mines in 1975 was over 21 million tons, and present projections forecast a steady increase in production, with tonnages almost doubling by 1985 (5). Of the total quantity of coal produced, about 16 million tons were consumed in electric power generation and the remainder was used for metallurgical coke production, extraction of chemicals and petroleum based products, and power for industry. The fact that 75 percent of Alabama's power is generated by burning coal attests to the importance of this fossil fuel to the State. Approximately 14 million tons of coal were produced by strip-mining methods in Alabama during 1975 and about 7 million tons were produced by underground mining during the same period. Surface mining is expected to continue at about 14 million tons per year, but by 1980 underground coal mining is expected to increase to about 25 million tons (3). About 7 million tons of surface-mined coal in Alabama is subjected to some means of washing or cleaning. The methods used are screening accompanied by heavy media separation, jigging, tabling and flotation. Some of the simpler approaches employ screening and jigging, or tabling. Except where flotation is used, the screen undersize fraction (finer than 0.25 inch) is rejected, with the result that 10 to 15 percent of the coal is lost. Thus, in the State of Alabama an aggregate of about 1 million tons of coal is wasted annually in the fines which are impounded from treatment of surface-mined coal. The use of the Humphreys spiral to concentrate fine coal was practiced as early as 1947. At that time the Hudson Coal Company (1) used Humphreys spirals to concentrate anthracite fines. This paper deals with the responsibilities of an operating geologists and the relationship of operations to exploration. It should be of interest to those soon to enter the profession, those new to pining geology and as a review to more experienced geologists. Subjects discussed include detailed geologic mapping, sampling, core logging, assaying, selection of proper map scale, posting geological and assay data, section preparation, identification of ore controls, delineation of development drill targets and geologic hazards, models and the very important topic of salesmanship. Methods and ideas, proven valid in vein, pyrometasomatic replacement and porphyry copper deposits are presented. Hopefully, these will smooth the path for new members of our profession.

Introduction In contrast to the general type of crushing mechanism in which the crushing surfaces alternately approach and withdraw from each other, described earlier in this section, and continuous-pressure break¬ers such as rolls and roller mills that will be described in a later chapter, impact crushers load by striking pieces of rock while in free fall and hurling them at high speed against stationary surfaces. Because the impact crusher depends for its effectiveness upon high velocity, wear is greater than in the slower-moving jaw and cone¬type wear parts, and for this reason its use is strictly limited to rela¬tively soft, friable, and sticky rocks that are characteristic of many nonmetallic mineral deposits. A few of these are phosphates, lime¬stone, barite, clay, asbestos rock, and coal. However, several examples of their use on soft lead-zinc and precious metal ores have been known. Although the use of impact crushers is expanding today into the range of ores containing as much as 15-18% silica, Taggart16 set the practical limit at 5%, and in the 1940s and 1950s several installa¬tions in the US and western Europe exceeded the limits of economical maintenance and were quickly superseded by the slower-moving, con¬ventional crushers. A rock that tends to be plastic or bouncy in a jaw or gyratory crusher when the force is applied slowly to reach ultimate strength, may become brittle with rapid loading and thus increase the effective¬ness of the applied forces. For this reason it is to be expected that as the quality of hammers, grates, plates, and cages improves with advances in steel technology, the use of high-speed crushers of this kind will increase. Terminology Modern usage differentiates between the impactor and the hammer mill, the former relying primarily on the impact of hammers (fixed or free-swinging) and secondarily upon pieces striking one another or steel surfaces; the hammer mill relies on both the centrifugal impact force of free-swinging hammers and the attrition and shear action between these hammers and well-placed grates suspended at the bot¬tom just below the hammer circle. The hammer mill, because of its grate discharge, restricts discharge of oversize rock to the grate open¬ing, while at the same time providing a trap for removal of tramp iron or other uncrushables. The impactor discharges free, so generally works with a screen to control product sizes. The question of terminology, impactor vs, hammer mill, creates difficulties because the similarities appear to outweigh the differences by far; if one were to list the similarities in order of importance and then the differences, he would be forced to conclude that they would best be dealt with as a single kind of crusher. Taggart16 gave it four names and added "as it is variously known," but it must be remembered that in 1945 the machine was nearly exclusively of the flailing-hammer type, while today the fixed-hammer rotor is also com¬mon. In this chapter the terms impactor and hammer mill will be used where they seem to apply. It is perhaps unfortunate that this terminology is being confused with rock breaking at the mine, usually with hand-held tools, e.g., the article "High-Energy Impact Rockbreaking" by Grantmyre and Hawkes, CIM Bulletin, August 1975. General Description Impact breakers, impact crushers, and hammer mills accomplish material breaking and reduction primarily through impact action of the material with fixed or free-swinging hammers revolving about a central rotor. The material to be crushed enters through an opening at the top or top side known as the "feed opening" or "hopper opening" and falls into the path of rotation (hammer circle) of the hammers. Initial breakage is accomplished in midair by collision of the dropping feed material with high-speed hammers. The second stage of breakage occurs when the pieces hit plates or breaker bars which line the crusher boxlike frame. Hammer mills rely further on a shearing and attrition action between free-swinging hammers and grid bars or grates at the crusher bottom which restrict discharge of oversize material until it is broken sufficiently to pass through the grid opening. Inspite of the growing demands worldwide, thermal coal must compete in the market both in price and quality. The design and performance efficiency of coal preparation plants is thus crucial to the survival and profitability of a coal industry. While the coal recovery influences the cost of production, the quality produced by a preparation plant determines the selling price. Several coal preparation plant simulation models have been developed in recent years to help Improve the performance of coal preparation plants. A research project was recently conducted at Southern Illinois University to evaluate the practical applicability of such a model. The results of this study are presented and discussed.

Liquid ion exchange is becoming more and more important in hydro-metallurgical processing and recovery of metals. The key to success for this process are reagents which have suitable operating characteristics. One of these important characteristics is a relatively fast phase separation rate in the extraction and stripping circuits, as this greatly affects the size of plant required. A test for measuring phase separation rate is needed to help evaluate liquid ion exchange reagents. Such "a test also would be useful for evaluating carrier solvents that are used for diluting the re-agents. In fact, one standard test method would be very desirable as it would provide a common basis for comparing reagents and sol-vents. The phase separation test described in this paper has been used successfully for several years with the copper reagent, LIX®64N. The test is set up for feed liquors containing low copper concentrations. For other types of systems, modifications in procedure probably would be necessary. However, this test and the associated apparatus could be the basis for a standard phase separation test.

"The 2018 Elko Roundtable was held at the Red Lion in Elko, NV on March 15, 2018. The gracious host was once again Knight Piésold. Attendance was robust with representatives from more than 14 mining properties across Nevada representing nine corporations. Total attendance was at its highest in almost a decade. A high level of interest was also gauged by the number of companies with multiple attendees.The topic of water in mining was clearly a factor in creating the large show of interest. In terms of industry trends that are tracked annually, this topic had been absent from the list for more than 10 years (Deloitte, 2018) but was squarely planted there this year. And deservedly so. Three attending companies are signatories of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) which espouses a firm stance on water stewardship (ICMM, 2017).How’s the water?It is reported that water scarcity affects more than 40 percent of the world’s population (Deloitte, 2018). Consumption of water in the United States, based on the last detailed census, entails only 1.5 percent usage by the mining industry. The largest users are reportedly thermoelectric power and irrigation, combining for more than 75 percent of the U.S. consumption. During the prior census period, water usage at mines was up dramatically (USGS, 2014).Mine water source usage is primarily a mix of ground water and saline or fresh surface water resources. Over the previous period, saline sources experienced the greatest percentage in growth as a mine water source, nearly doubling in use. Nevada ranks second as a state nationally in mine water consumption. California is the leader, and Nevada is immediately followed by Utah and Alaska (USGS, 2014).Water rights in Nevada and the ongoing litigation at the state level, particularly over the Humboldt River basin, have elevated the concern over the supply of water and have raised the interest regarding the topic of water across the mining industry as well as within other industries.The Elko Roundtable meeting began with a safety share and introductions, and included each attendee mentioned a water problem or solution that he or she would like to discuss during the day. An interesting list of subtopics was developed from this round robin and yielded the following most common themes:• Mine pit dewatering during operation and pit wall stability.• Draindown from tailings dams and heap leach pads and dealing with this at closure.• Post closure pit lakes, pit lake water quality and associated water rights."

The design of an underground opening involves the coincidence of two highly complex and poorly specified components. First, the structural or mechanical characteristics of a geologic rock mass are not only extremely variable but are also very difficult to evaluate. Second, the general lay¬out of mine workings contains a large degree of indeterminancy as to the structure itself as a result of the indefiniteness of the mining process, and also because of the inherent redundancies associated with bulky and weighty structures. Even for the relatively simple problem of tunneling this complexity is well recognized to be "without question that to which the study of geo¬logy (for the Engineer) can most fitly and usefully be applied".1 It can, therefore, be appreciated that the comprehensive opening design problem involves a complicated assemblage of component structures made up of a sketchily defined, or sometimes even an undefined material and acted upon by largely unknown tectonic forces.

The US Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A h/150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 msecs. Graphite, lead and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70°C (158° F) gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10% to 30%, and a period of 100 msecs to 1000 msecs gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µg/mL to 0.1 µg/mL. Au concentrations decreased from 54 µg/mL to 0.2 µg/mL and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.
