"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. Machine breakdowns and maintenance delays are large contributors to lost production and increased operating costs in the mining industry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the applications of expert system technology to diagnostic and predictive maintenance tor mining equipment. This will help increase mining productivity and decrease operating costs, by reducing the frequency of equipment failures and repair times. The Bureau has begun this effort by applying expert system techniques to the diagnosis of hydraulic system problems on a continuous mining machine. This paper discusses the development of the hydraulic diagnostic expert system.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of using silica sand as a grinding media in stirred ball mills for ultra-fine coal grinding. Laboratory batch as well as bench scale continuous tests indicate that the use of silica sand can reduce the energy consumption by 50% and more over its steel media counter-part. Moreover, this approach has been found to eliminate the disadvantages observed with grinding using steel media such as high replacement cost, contamination of coal through media wear, greater degree of coal oxidation due to higher slurry temperature and greater level of noise dissipation. Additionally, coal-sand attrition system reduces the manpower time required which is often spent towards cleaning and storing of steel media in inert atmosphere to avoid rust and corrosion problems.

Several alternatives are available for treating lover grade gold ores averaging 0.04 to 0.10 ounce per ton. These include heap, vat and agitation leaching and may involve conventional zinc precipitation or carbon adsorption-electrowinning systems. Each of these processes have their inherent economic and operating advantages and disadvantages and the selection of the optimum method for a given gold ore is solely based on economic evaluation of the applicable processes. In this paper an effort is made to provide engineering feasibility estimates for the above processes under varying operational conditions such as ore grade and price of gold.

The Bureau of Mines, Department of Interior, has been investigating the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant for a variety of mineral wastes. As part of this investigation, the hydrodynamics of the flocculation process were studied. It was determined that to obtain optimum dewatering results, the factors of energy input into the stirrer, polymer concentration, and polymer dosage must be considered. Lt was found that at a given polymer concentration, there was an optimum stirrer speed and polymer dosage. With excess PEO, the amount of water removed in the trommel decreased, but no evidence for steric stabilization was observed.

Due to the surge in shale gas production, a substantial number of unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled across U.S. coal reserves. Gas breaches resulting from damaged wells pose a considerable safety risk to miners. This paper investigates how a ventilation system can effectively manage breached gas through a network-based numerical model and laboratory-scaled physical model. Several hypothetical gas breach scenarios in a longwall area are simulated, exploring factors influencing gas mitigation. The study establishes correlations between breached gas inflow and gas concentration at critical locations. The findings in this study provide valuable insights for managing mine ventilation systems and enhancing coal miner safety.

Fluorine is a lively element in both its chemical and economic behavior. It was not isolated as an element until 1886 by Moissan. However, its principal source to this day, fluorspar, was known and its special merits recognized long before that time. Our own mining brother, Agricola, is credited with having named fluorite, the mineral name, in 1546 from the Latin, "fluere", to flow. It made things melt and was already being used as a flux. Because fluorspar has been found as a relatively common gangue mineral in metal ore veins, it has long attracted the attention of geological thinkers seeking to, explain the whys and wherefores of veins. Fluorine has been thought of as one of the principal mineralizers, holding metals in ascending vein solutions for deposition close enough to the eventual surface to be accessible for profitable mining.

Open-pit mining is sometimes conducted in areas where the artesian pressures contained in aquifers underlying the pit's floor are great enough to cause floor heave. In order to reduce this pressure several methods are commonly used. One of these methods is a pressure relief well or depressurization wick. The wick consists of a borehole which is filled with gravel and cased at the surface. The wick is allowed to flow freely, thus reducing pressure near its location. The spacing and depth of these wicks can be determined by a simple analytical and graphical technique which considers the weight of material overlying the aquifer and the artesian force within the aquifer. An example of the technique using data from a Colombian coal mine is presented.

Although there has been an increased interest in the electrokinetic properties of coal (1) research on the subject is still in an early stage of development (2,3,4,5,6,7) To the author's knowledge, no electrokinetic studies have been made on coal lithotypes - particularly anthracite lithotypes. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the double layer properties displayed at the anthracite/water interface (whole coal and lithotypes) as determined by streaming potential methods, It is hoped that this investigation and related future investigations will provide correlations from which the surface properties of any coal can be predicted and then related to surface dependent processes such as froth flotation and flocculation. Another aspect of this research, undertaken to determine the physical and chemical parameters necessary for anthracite lithotype differentiation, was previously published (8). The number of parameters involved, lithologic, organic and inorganic, and the wide divergence of these parameters within an individual coal limits the practical utilization of the results, however, the results are of value and of interest in guiding theoretical developments. Keeping the limitations in mind, the results are analyzed in terms of their application to froth flotation processes and are used to indicate the feasibility of making a lithotype separation by flotation.

This paper is a description of the digital Data Acquisition and control System that is installed at Cities Service's Pinto Valley Concentrator. Pinto Valley Concentrator ? The Pinto Valley Concentrator (5, 41 is located approximately seven miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona. The Concentrator is situated south of the open pit mine and was designed to process 40,000 tons of ore per day with an average grade of .45% copper. The comminution process consists of primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing, and single-stage closed-circuit grinding 161. Concentration of the copper sulfides is by means of froth flotation. Concentrates are transferred to the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company smelter in Miami, Arizona through a slurry pipeline.

At the outset of a discussion on the adaptability of Illinois coals for use in iron and steel production, it is perhaps well to define terms. ?Adaptability? as used in this context, means that a coal can be, adapted to use within a given technological and economic framework. For a coal to be adaptable, to use in the manufacture of metallurgical coke within the present technological and economic framework, it must possess, among other things, at least the following characteristics: 1. The coal must be capable of producing, alone or in combination with other coals, a coke that can meet at least a minimum standard of required performance in the present-day blast furnace. The coke must have sufficient strength, stability, hardness, and freedom from impurities to make it suitable. 2. If the coal in its raw form does not meet these requirements, it must be amenable to beneficiation or upgrading so that the requirements can be met. 3. It must be available in uniform quality and in sufficient quantities to meet the need. 4. Use of the coal must be economically attractive. If its quality is equivalent; to that of the coals with which it must compete, it must be no more expensive than they. If It is better, a premium price may perhaps be demanded. If, in any respect, it is the least bit less suitable, the cost must be lower to offset its disadvantages.

The Tunnel of Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri, spanning 6.05 miles, will be Latin America’s longest road tunnel, is currently under construction in Colombia’s Antioquia Department with a single bidirectional tube connected to a parallel rescue tube through multiple cross-passages. The study faces challenges in implementing the prescriptive semitransversal ventilation system due to design restrictions. Different ventilation concepts are eplored to nd the most suitable system for regular operation and re scenarios. A quantitative ris assessment evaluates each alternative system and identies the longitudinal ventilation system, accompanied by ris mitigation measures, as the safest choice, since it surpasses the prescribed semitransversal ventilation concept.

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have studied the influence of headgate side ventilation controls near the longwall start-up room on the formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground coal longwall bleeder ventilated gobs. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study the formation of methane-air mixtures in the gob, start-up room, and bleeder entries. The relative change in size and location of EGZs are examined in response to ventilation controls in the headgate side bleeder entries near the start-up room. Modeling suggests that adjustments to the ventilation controls can be made to minimize the size of the EGZ. However the EGZ may form in or around active working areas regardless of the ventilation control settings. Research found regulators on the crosscuts into start-up room and first entry inby can force air into to crosscuts outby the start-up room causing more air to flow through the gob. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall mine ventilation systems may operate with either a bleeder ventilated gob or a progressively sealed gob. Bleeder ventilated gobs must meet the standards for safe operation of the bleeder system by examining bleeder system effectiveness. As defined in the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Program Policy Letter (PPL) No. P13-V-12 (MSHA 2013), the pillared area or gob is “any area where a reduction in pillar size has occurred during retreat mining” and includes the “caved and broken material, the interstices within the caved material, and the open spaces surrounding the caved material.” The PPL further states that the intended purpose of ventilating the gob is “to protect active workings from the hazards of methane accumulations …” The requirements for operating a bleeder system as stated in The United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 2013) Title 30 §75.334(b) is to pass ventilation air though the gob “and to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures [from the gob] away from active workings and into a return air course …” where the concentration cannot exceed 2 percent methane (CFR 30 § 75.323). Further clarification of the bleeder system as described in the PPL states the following: “A bleeder system includes the area from which pillars are wholly or partially recovered, bleeder entries, bleeder connectors, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air movement through the area. Bleeder entries are air courses designed and maintained as part of the bleeder system.”"

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

The advantages derived from the use of pellet burdens in blast furnaces are so great, that hematite ores are being converted into pellets in greater quantities each year. The conversion of these ores into pellets appears on the surface to be relatively simple. In reality, this is not so. Serious difficulties are encountered in drying these pellets that do not exist in the drying of taconite concentrate pellets. The ores that present problems are goethite and earthy hematites. Green pellets prepared from these ores have very law shock temperatures, 200-600° F. The shock temperature of a green pellet according to our definition is the highest initial temperature to which a green pellet may be exposed without suffering decrepitation. Decrepitation may involve spalling, fracturing or total disintegration. The poor shock properties of these green pellets result from the inability of the vaporized water to escape freely and easily as it is formed with¬out affecting the integrity of the pellet. As a consequence, the pellets must be carefully dried prior to induration. This careful treatment is costly. The slow drying process restricts productivity and requires larger furnaces than desired. The use of an additive to elevate the shock temperature of the green pellets would increase productivity. Bentonite is used in some pellet plants to improve balling but it raises the shock temperature only slightly. Nalco became interested in the shock temperature problem because of its activity in the development of organic pelletizing aids for taconite concentrates. The findings reported here are an outgrowth of our experimental work on the development of shock temperature additives.

In order to better understand the relation- ship of underground and surface oil shale processing systems, a block flow chart is presented in Fig. I. From this figure only modified in-situ and Room and Pillar underground mining are currently committed and into the Detailed Design and Construction phases. Figure II illustrates the times required (Federal land site) to bring oil shale operation into production. As this example shows, only those companies having progressed beyond the exploration stage have a chance to obtain oil shale production within the next 10 years. A more detailed breakdown of the oil shale development for those on private lands or having already obtained Federal lease lands is shown in Fig. III for shale oil development (without major regulatory changes).

There are tens of thousands of inactive mine features in 274 mining districts in New Mexico (including coal, uranium, metals, and industrial minerals districts). However, many of these mines have not been inventoried or prioritized for reclamation. Many of these mines have existing mine wastes, generated during mineral production, which could have potential for critical minerals, especially since the actual mineral production was generally for precious and base metals and not critical minerals. The purpose of this project is to characterize and estimate the critical mineral endowment of mine wastes and “beta-test” USGS sampling procedures. This project is important to the state of New Mexico because critical mineral resources must be identified before land exchanges, withdrawals or other land use decisions are made by government officials. Future mining of mine wastes that potentially contain critical minerals will directly benefit the economy of New Mexico. Possible re-mining of mine wastes could clean up these sites and pay for reclamation. Furthermore, this project will include training of younger, professional geologists and students in economic and reclamation geology by the PIs.

In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.
