Mining was the first economic activity carried out in Cuba, by the colonial conquerous, i.e. gold extraction from rivers and use of asphalt to calk their ships; however, due to different historic reasons only a limited development took place in this field during the colonial domination. During the republican period beginning early in this century, other interests lead to a larger scale exploitation of some known deposits. From the beginning of the century up to the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, not less than the following figures were extracted of some Cuban minerals: Refractory Chromium 3,300,000t Manganese 7,650,000 t Copper 9,000,000 t Iron 22,000,000 t Nickel 150,000 t (Ni oxide and sulphide These productions were practically directed to cover the demands of the U.S., industry and some-times these Cuban ores were almost the sole suppliers of the market.

This paper (1) presents new data on the use of horizontal curves to optimize the alignment of belt conveyors. The operating concept of a horizontal curve is simple. As an element of the belt passes through the curve, it is motivated to drift toward the center of the curve by unbalanced tension forces in the belt. This lateral drift is resisted by the forces of friction and gravity, which in turn can be stated as a function of drift. Resisting forces, as a function of drift, are stated in terms of variables such as the amount of load on the belt, and parameters such as the trough angle, tilt angle, and super elevation angle, and number of rolls in the idler. The trick is to determine that the belt will drift to a position of equilibrium within predictable limits, without physically constraining the edge of the belt. In practice this prediction is not easy to make without the aid of a computer. The motivating force is easy to calculate, but its value is continually changing throughout the angle subtended by the curve arc. The resisting forces are constant throughout the curve for a given drift and load condition, but the calculations are very complex. Data in this paper will assist the conveyor designer in making preliminary calculations for horizontal curves. Presented is the equation for calculating the motivating force, and a family of curves that show the resisting force as a function of lateral drift for some commonly encountered conveyor design criteria.

The impact of conversion on the coal industry can be summarized very briefly: We are going to have to mine an awful lot of coal. Fortunately, the United States has the coal reserves available, and given the right conditions, we can mine it. The coal reserves of the United States are enormous. If we consider them on the basis of proved reserves, using the standards of the petroleum industry--that is, resources mapped and explored and recoverable with present techniques at close to present costs--and compare that with the reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88 per cent of the proved recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium, so long as the uranium is used in burner reactors. If we consider resources on the basis of "ultimate recoverable" reserves, that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs--and if we include those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery--coal still accounts for 74 per cent of the national total. We have built a hydrocarbon economy in which about 76 per cent of our total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas, and about 20 per cent by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low and, assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20 per cent supplied by coal may increase dramatically. We already import nearly a quarter of the petroleum we consume, and the chief source of additional imports seems to lie in the politically unstable Middle East. Natural gas is in even shorter supply, and the problems of importing it seem at least as difficult as those of oil. The fact is, the United States is already relying to an increasing extent on foreign fuel sources. There is an obvious national risk in making an important part of energy supply hostage to foreign governments of uncertain tenure and friendliness. Plans for a large industrial development in the Upper Ohio Valley between Moundsville and New Martinsville, West Virginia, were announced in the Fall of 1955. This development consisted of a large aluminum plant to be .built by Olin-Mathieson; a 675,000 KW power plant to be constructed by the American Electric Power Service; and a large coal mine adjacent to the power plant to be developed by the Hanna Coal Company Division of Consolidation Coal Company. The Ireland Mine was designed to efficiently supply fuel for the power plant, and this was the first consideration in the location of facilities, design, and development of plant and the selection of the equipment. The first problem was to find a suitable area for the surface facilities. A level bottom area south of the power plant was reserved for future industrial plants and this area was also blocked off from the coal reserves by an old abandoned and flooded mine. The coal storage facilities of the power plant were on the north side of the plant and it was decided to locate the coal mine preparation plant on-the shoulder of a hill above the power plant. This location required the excavation of 70,000 yards of rock but permitted the driving of a belt slope from the plant at an angle so that the haulage roads underground would miss the abandoned Cresap Mine. This location also permitted the plant to be located at an elevation so that the conveyors leaving the plant were horizontal and had sufficient clearance above the highway and railroad tracks. The other surface facilities consisting of air shafts, supply slope, supply yard, office, bathhouse, shop and warehouse were located in the valley some distance north of the preparation plant. This location placed these facilities one mile nearer to the working area. Plans for design and development of the mine were started in November 1955; grading and clearing of surface area was started in January 1956; the air shafts and slopes were started in the Spring and Summer of 1956; and the first coal was produced from the supply slope in October 1956. The preparation plant was put in operation in March 1958, and by July 1959 was producing 8,000 tons per day.

Gas outbursts occur as sudden eruptions of gas and minerals from the face of a mine heading as the heading approaches potentially burst-prone (or anomalous) zones of rock. Such outbursts have resulted in considerable damage to equipment and in some cases lives have been lost. Characterizing these anomalous zones and detecting their presence is therefore vital to safe mining. Certain significant characteristics associated with the outburst-prone zones are: (1) the presence of fluid inclusions, (2) unstable stress conditions, (3) characteristic geologic structures, (4) certain physical properties of the rock, and (5) micro-seismic activity. Geophysical and engineering methods for detecting these characterisitcs are discussed and are considered with respect to their past success and future potential for predicting gas outbursts.

This article summarizes some of the results of the continuing research activity at the Henry Krumb School of Mines, Columbia University, directed towards a better understanding of the stochastic behavior of slurry flows in underground coal-slurry pipeline systems. The slurry system under consideration here replaces all conventional haulage systems between the coal face and the coal preparation plant on the surface. At the beginning of the pipeline system, flow rate and frequency of coal slurry is very closely related to the activities of production equipment at the coal face. Due to several scheduled and unscheduled interruptions in continuous miner's coal mining activity, resulting slurry flows possess stochastic characteristics. Proper understanding of these characteristics is believed to lead to a more realissic and economic design of slurry handling equipment. Fundamental ideas supported by field observations are presented and a Semi-Markov model of the slurry flows is developed. As a result of this formulation, behavior of combined slurry flows from N independent coal faces can be expressed in analytical form. The contents of a slurry surge tank receiving slurry flows with certain stochastic characteristics is investigated as a function of discharge pump characteristics and time.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

The competitiveness of power production from lignite depends on the ability of coal industry to meet CO2 emissions limits, as specified by the Kyoto protocol. According to the National Allocation plan issued by EC, power plants should reduce CO2 emissions to a certain level, other-wise they will be obliged to cover the difference buying CO2 certificates through the Emission Trading Scheme. These charges will increase the operating cost of current units, as well as the investment cost for new units. To predict the increase in the marginal cost of electric power produced from the current plants of Western Macedonia, an emissions factor (CO2 t/MWh) for various units has been computed. Based on the algorithm used, this factor depends on the calorific value of the lignite, the efficiency of the power plant and the oxidation factor of the unit. For lignite plants with efficiency ~37%, CO2 emissions factor ranged from 1.19 t/MWh to 1.32 t/MWh. The increase in the marginal cost of kWh, as compared to the values of CO2 certificates, is higher in units fed with low quality lignite and worsens if the efficiency of the unit is low too. Also the presence of calcareous minerals in lignite increases the CO2 emissions and consequently the cost of power generation.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

One of the critical challenges facing the mining industry ? and not just in the United States ? is the looming labor shortage. A significant percentage of the industry?s professional workforce is, well, getting old, and many will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This is not a new issue to the industry. It has been discussed at various industry meetings and conferences for many years. How does mining, with its largely negative public image, attract young people to mining schools? And, equally important, who is going to teach them? Mining schools, what?s left of them in the United States, are beginning to lose qualified faculty to retirements, and no one is available to replace them. SME addressed this issue during the keynote session at its annual meeting in February in Denver, CO. This year?s theme was ?Mining: It?s About the People.? Despite a blizzard that blanketed the city on the day most attendees were to have arrived, the meeting still attracted a record 7,202 people. And the accompanying exhibit sold 822 booths, also a record. The U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory contracted with the National Academies? National Research Council to complete a study concerning the availability of skilled workers to meet the energy and mineral security requirements for the United States. The National Research Council, in turn, asked SME to collect and analyze workforce trends in these industries. The result of SME?s analysis is the report ?Emerging Workforce Trends in the U.S. Energy and Minerals Industries.? It is available on the SME website, www.smenet.org. Click on Government Affairs. While the report did not paint a completely dismal picture, there were some disturbing results. It concluded that within 20 years there will not be a sufficient number of skilled professionals to satisfy the labor demand. That said, the report said that most of those positions would likely be filled. However, the U.S. mining will go through a period of time when the workforce will be made up of very young and senior workers.

The City of Santa Cruz Water Department is replacing the existing Newell Creek Dam inlet/outlet works at Loch Lomond Reservoir in the San Lorenzo Valley. The project will improve the City’s overall operational efficiency, improve system performance, and improve the safety and reliability of storage for the City’s drinking water supply. The project comprises new inlet works* (three new inlets that control and convey flows into and out of the reservoir, and an intake control building), an inlet/outlet tunnel with a 48-inch conduit to convey flows into and out of the reservoir, and a new outlet structure at the toe of the dam. The outlet structure includes a release point for energy dissipation of emergency drawdown flows, a connection to Newell Creek Pipeline, and beneficial releases into Newell Creek. The project also includes a new dam seepage collection and monitoring system and appurtenant structures such as a culvert bridge over the spillway plunge pool to improve access to the new outlet. Notable complex project components include in-water work to connect the new intake shaft pipes to the three new inlets. The project includes one major milestone with a work window regulated by environmental permits that could only be amended/ extended with approvals from those agencies. If not met, the milestone work would have caused significant delays (potentially up to one year) to the project.

Federal regulations require refuge alternatives in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 h while maintaining an apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). Research by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with refuge alternatives because they have limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding a refuge alternative is complex and not easily defined, analytically or experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in refuge alternatives, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine, 96-h tests on a 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, a 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and a six-person metal-type refuge alternative. The results show that when moisture was introduced to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average temperature at midheight increased by 10.5 °C (18.9 °F) and the RH approached 88 percent for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative; the average temperature at midheight increased by 9.4 °C (16.9 °F) and the RH approached 94 percent for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative; and the average temperature at midheight increased by 7.7 °C (13.9 °F) and the RH approached 95 percent for the sixperson metal-type refuge alternative. For the dry tests, where no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 12.6 °C (22.7 °F) for the 10-person tent-type refuge alternative, by 10.3 °C (18.5 °F) for the 23-person tent-type refuge alternative and by 8.4 °C (15.1 °F) for the six-person metal-type refuge alternative. These results may provide refuge alternative manufacturers and mine operators with guidelines and considerations for evaluating temperature profiles for portable refuge alternatives. The information may then be used to make decisions on occupancy ratings and heat mitigation strategies based on the thermal environment in which the refuge alternatives will be installed.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. In oil sands mining, tailings are voluminous unwanted byproducts generated from extracting the desired mineral from the mined ore. Dyke construction and backfilling activities require well-managed techniques to facilitate progressive reclamation at the earliest opportunity. This directly affects the sustainability and profitability of the mining operation. This research introduces a goal programming framework that simultaneously optimizes the (1) production schedule with limited duration stockpiling and directional mining, (2) dyke construction schedule, (3) size, shape and location of tailing cells and (4) mining and processing production targets. The results show that in creating in-pit tailing-cell designs, decreasing the mining-cell volume and increasing the number of mining cells improves the net present value (NPV) of the operation due to increased operational flexibility.

In a recently developed long term open pit production planning model, the optimum plan is found by exhaustively searching through nested pits of maximum-metal contents. A more efficient, dynamic programming (DP) based search algorithm now replaces the exhaustive search algorithm which was requiring prohibitively long execution time in real life cases. The logic and the formulation of the newly developed search algorithm are illustrated through a small hypothetical case. A real life gold deposit is treated to demonstrate that the algorithm does indeed find the optimum production plan among all possible plans. A comparison, in terms of computational savings between the two algorithms is also given.

After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.

The purpose of my presentation is threefold: a) to make you aware of what is available in Canada in terms of refractory minerals. b) indicate the mineral deposits that have potential for development. c) show the advantages of Canada as a supplier of electrical energy necessary for the production of electrofused minerals. Canada is a producer of natural refractory minerals, electrofused minerals, and synthetic refractory minerals. Several deposits also have good potential for development. The natural refractory minerals produced in Canada are shown in Table 1. The major minerals by decreasing order of importance in terms of tonnage and values are: dolomite, graphite and magnesite.

The economics of the producer-consumer interface - the route from mine to market - impact much more severely on specialty industrial minerals, extender/fillers that have to be sold, than on commodity industrial minerals that are basically supplied. Working capital costs for inventories and accounts receivable, fixed capital costs for storage/ warehousing/distribution, and sales and marketing costs all make the extender/filler producer much more of a marketer than a miner. The future survival of an extender/filler producer will primarily depend on the skill he has in the economics of the interface.

In recent years a number of data processing and analytical techniques have proven to be useful to engineers and geologists in various segments of the mineral industries. Petroleum companies were among the first to utilize the computer to store well data files and to analyze that data for exploration purposes. A few years later, metal mining companies began to apply the same basic computer methods to problems in mineral exploration, ore reserve evaluation, and open pit mine planning. Because of the increasing complexity of planning for coal mines and land reclamation, a case study was undertaken to evaluate the usefulness of computer techniques to assist mining engineers and geologists in mapping coal deposits, evaluating coal reserves, strip mine planning and land management. The data used in the study was provided by the Illinois State Geologic Survey. This paper describes some of the results of that study. First, considerations for the development of a computer data base for coal deposits are presented. Next, a series of analytical techniques for processing the data is described. Finally, the case study is presented to illustrate how the coal data base and the analytical techniques could be used in actual practice.

To the safety engineer, mine planning engineer, and mine inspector associated with an underground operation, stability of the underground structure is of the utmost importance. In the United States in 1961 rock falls killed 167 miners, crippled many more, and cost the industry a fortune in lost equipment and production. Much research has been carried on to try to find ways to eliminate this loss of life and property. Within the past few years the interest in rock mechanics as a science has been at its highest point, Private industry, government agencies, universities and foundations have launched studies to gain a better basic understanding of the stability of underground openings.
