An economic analysis for evaluating coal preparation plants in the Appalachian Region is presented. A complete coal preparation plant which includes multi-streams and/or multi-stages coal cleaning circuits, complete closed water circuits, environmentally acceptable refuse disposal and reclamation systems is used to determine the capital and operating costs. The plant is capable of producing metallurgical grade clean coal or deep cleaned steam grade coal for future power generating plants use. Utilizing a profit maximization as a decision criterion, an optimal yield, and optimal coal clean¬ing circuits, closed water circuits, and disposal and reclamation systems for a given coal characteristic may be selected among the process alternatives by using a process simulation-economic model of the coal preparation plant. A deterministic analysis is used to calculate the discounted-cash-flow interest rate of return (DCFIROR) and project the selling prices, and determine the Return on Investment (ROI) for the cases of 32.65% and 52.74% plant utilization with producing two cleaned products. Sensitivity analyses are performed to quantify the effect of total capital investment, operating cost, run-of-mine cost and yield on an economic criterion-ROI and selling prices. A probabilistic evaluation using the Monte Carlo simulation technique is further made to quantify the risk involved in obtaining the desired profit levels. The results of the economic analysis for a given coal preparation plant configuration and characteristics of raw coal indicates that the selling prices of producing two cleaned products are greatly affected by the change in percent of plant utilization (production schedule), yield, and run-of-mine cost, and total capital cost. The sensitivity analysis also shows that the total capital investments has a three times greater effect on required selling prices than operating costs. The risk analysis shown that the overall economics look very attractive with current coal sale prices and 52.74% plant utilization.

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy (CCSEM) analyses of sediment samples from coastal regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu states and the heavy mineral deposits of Chavara, South India, show large lateral differences in the titanium content in ilmenite due to varying degrees of iron leaching. As the depositional environments for the sands with varying degrees of ilmenite alteration are comparable, the cause for the different degree of alteration is due to differences in the primary source of the ilmenite or to differences in the geochemical history of the ilmenite grains during transport from source to deposit. The CCSEM analyses of the heavy mineral fractions show that source of sediments with a high content of titanium-enriched ilmenites, mainly the heavy mineral deposit around Chavara, resides in the khondalite belt of South India (granulite facies metasediments). The less titanium-enriched ilmenites are sourced from other rocks in the area such as the charnokites. Those conclusions are based on the high MgO content in the leached ilmenites, chemical composition of the accompanying garnets (low CaO and high MgO), and the concentration of aluminum-rich minerals in the sands.

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Ground control is critical to the success of a safe and productive underground stone mining operation. The primary focus of the ground control engineer is the stability of the roof or back; development and benched pillar stability; stability of the sill pillar between vertically adjacent mining levels; and floor stability. Roof stability begins with the selection of a stable back horizon based on the presence of a thin shale parting, stylolite or other discontinuity from which the production shot can easily peel away, leaving a stable back stratum. Bed thickness, fracture spacing, jointing and the material properties of the roof strata control the room width; the decision whether to bolt the roof; the bolt length, type and diameter; and the spacing of the roof support. Horizontal stress controls the header and crosscut azimuth. The mine operator should avoid driving perpendicular to the maximum horizontal stress direction. Where this is unavoidable, narrowing the opening width, narrowing pillar centers, increasing the support density and using three-way intersections are alternatives to remediate shearing along the roof-rib interface. Stable pillar dimensions depend upon the interaction of the vertical stress resulting from overburden thickness and multiple-level interaction of overlying level or levels; the mining height during development and the final mining height after floor shots are taken during benching; the presence of faults, folds or joints passing through the pillar; and limestone lithology, recognizing that the presence of oolitic bands, shale partings, joints and bentonite beds creates zones of weakness that can destabilize an otherwise competent pillar. Floor stability is typically not a significant issue for underground stone mines because the bearing capacity of the stone typically exceeds the vertical pressure transferred through the pillar. However, floor heave can be a ground control issue where shale partings, moisture-sensitive strata, weak stone bands or horizontal stress is present. Roof stability and pillar stability problems can be initiated as the floor heave enables the pillar and roof to settle. To illustrate these ground control issues, this paper presents four case histories that are a mix of ground failures and successful mining. The focus is on the geotechnical data required for roof, pillar and floor design and stability analysis.

Disintegration of the immediate shale roof in coal mines interferes with ventilation, production, and safety. The effect is seasonal and correlates with high levels of moisture in the intake ventilation air. Disintegration, though not completely understood, is caused by shale dilation and weakening upon exposure to atmospheric moisture. Fluctuating moisture conditions are particularly deleterious, and may be at least partially controlled by "tempering" the air before it is brought to the working places. Roof behavior was studied in an operating mine during a 12-month monitoring period. This approach can be used in developing criteria to reduce or prevent shale roof deterioration.

This paper concerns the development and application of a high throughput multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyzes the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analyzing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 tons/hour for a-2 ½? + 1 ¼? feed to 200 tons/hour for -6" +2 ¾ " material.

Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55% are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper’s goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with SiO2between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with SiO2 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2from 0.8 to 0.95 during production.

This paper attempts to answer whether or not the mill performance at Bougainville could have, in fact, been predicted by the population balance approach, or whether other special considerations are required to explain their behavior. In recent studies, the plant tests were performed at Bougainville and batch tests were carried out at the Utah Comminution Center. In all tests power measurements were made and several levels of energy input to grinding were evaluated. Also, tracer tests were performed for mill residence time determination. The performance of Bougainville's 5.5x6.4-m mill has been very successfully predicted by population balance methods. The prediction errors are only about 1% on product size distribution and 4% on power with a mill volume scale-up of 3790:1. It is significant that this approach will reduce the risk of failure in large mill design that has been recognized in traditional methods.

The phenomena of dripping into cavities (e.g. tunnels and drifts) within an unsaturated fractured porous medium under ventilated conditions is studied to improve estimates of dripping rates, drop sizes, and chemical composition of droplets that could affect the integrity of high-level nuclear waste packages placed in drifts. The sensitivity of dripping rates and water chemistry to ventilation is analyzed at various flow rates using analytical expressions linking flow on fracture surfaces to drop formation and evaporation. The model was tested using laboratory experiments involving machined aluminum slabs designed to represent a simplified morphology of a fracture face intersecting a cavity and using natural fracture surfaces from a welded tuff. Comparison with ten years of data on dripping in natural caves showed good agreement with model predictions. In particular, for low dripping rates, evaporation due to ventilation leads to larger drop sizes and alters drop chemistry by increasing the concentration of solutes in the drop relative to that in the water flowing on the fracture face.

The current study is concerned with the analysis and attempt at simulating the product size distributions obtained from a vibrating ultrasonic device. Systematic experiments of comminution were performed with natural sizes as well as monosizes in order to understand the breakage behavior of the device. A precise analysis of the device's breakage performance in the case of fine grinding of alumina samples will be presented. Initial steps to model the breakage events using a detailed mathematical algorithm will be discussed.

Over the past 30 years, the coal industry has been continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning fine coal to acceptable ash and sulfur contents while maintaining maximum product yield. The flotation process has been part of this effort and its importance is expected to grow as new utilization technology demands finer and purer coal products. The work outlined in this paper is part of a larger effort aimed at development of new and improved flotation systems for removing sulfur and ash from as-mined coal as well as for producing super-clean coal for future markets. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of flotation.

Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

"When Dr. Joseph A. Holmes was named the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910, the challenge in front of the mining industry was urgent and profound. Just three years before the Bureau was formed, the United States’ coal industry saw a spike in fatalities, as 3,242 miners lost their lives, including 918 miners killed in 18 major disasters. Holmes, who is often called the Founding Father of Mine Safety, was charged with researching and finding new and safer methods to conduct mining activities as well as more efficient ways to conduct mine rescue to educate miners.The U.S. Bureau of Mines was dissolved in 1996, but the mission of the Holmes Mine Rescue Association remains intact, although the challenges have changed greatly.During the 102 years between its formation and the 2018 Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association & Holmes Mine Rescue Association Annual Meeting and Training Seminar in Denver, CO June 5-7, the mining industry has evolved to become one the safest industries in the United States, with an injury rate on par with school teachers and better than retail workers. The work of Holmes and the Bureau of Mines plotted a course for others to follow, and the fatality rate has plummeted to historic lows. However, those who work in the mining safety and health sector remain diligent to their cause and are slow to celebrate too much the accomplishments of the past century, focusing instead on the work that lies ahead.“The nature of mining accidents has changed and it is very difficult to make changes when you get down to the asymptotic part of the equation,” David Zatezalo, assistant secretary of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) told Mining Engineering. He was the featured speaker at the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association annual meeting’s banquet dinner and presented a thorough overview of the mission of MSHA and his goals as its top man.Nominated by President Donald Trump, Zatezalo was sworn in as the ninth assistant secretary for MSHA on Nov. 30, 2017 and brings with him a lifetime of experience in mining. During his presentation, he displayed the chart (Fig. 1) showing the dramatic improvement in safety that the industry has achieved during the past century, but he noted that, as the industry gets closer to its end goal of zero fatalities, it has become increasingly more difficult to cross the finish line."

The link between artificial ground freezing and the mining industry stretches back more than 140 years, and across an ocean. Patented by the German scientist F.H. Poetsch in 1863, the technique is reported to have first been used circa 1862 in the coal mining valleys of South Wales. In the United States, the first ground freezing application, to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), occurred in 1888 for the Chapin Mine Co. in Iron Mountain, MO. In England in 1901, the Poetsch method was used for the first time to successfully sink two shafts through 24 to 27 m (80 to 90 ft) of wet sand and boulder clay at the Washington Glebe Colliery, near Sunderland. British mining engineer T.H. Cockin, in his 1905 Class-Book of Practical Coal-Mining, noted that, ?This method of sinking through thick beds of very wet quicksand has met with great success; it is one of the recognized methods of sinking on the Continent.? Mine shaft freezing soon became relatively common in Europe where the project could bear the cost of a major refrigeration plant construction. However, it was not until 1952 that the second North American ground freezing project was completed to facilitate the sinking of a 4.5-m- (15-ft-) diameter, 233-m- (765-ft-) deep shaft at a Potash Company of America (PCA) mine in Carlsbad, NM. Nowadays, ground freezing is used worldwide for both mining and civil applications. In small mine shafts of 3 to 6 m (10 to 20 ft) in diameter, excavations have been carried out to depths of more than 820 m (2,700 ft) within the protection of unbraced or unlined frozen walls. In fact, for deep mines, no better method has yet been established for sinking production shafts through deep, water-bearing ground. Major deposits of coal, potash and salt would still be inaccessible if not for artificial ground freezing. There are several advantages of ground freezing unique to the construction of shafts. Proper instrumentation can provide complete assurance of the integrity of the freeze to full depth prior to excavation. The frozen wall allows construction to be scheduled without evaluating the in-shaft time necessary to probe ahead, place additional sup-ports or deal with ground water. The freeze can be implemented perfectly through the soil/rock interface, which is often the most difficult geology in which to create a ground water cutoff by other methods. In an industrialized nation, as the process of industrialization continues, the ratio of the value of production of non-metallic to metallic minerals normally increases gradually over a period of years. For example, in the United States, the ratio of the value of production of non-metals to metals now is approximately two-to-one. Those of us who come from California like to think that we inherit the mantle of the old hard-rock miner, but the truth of the matter is that, in California, of the total value of mineral production exclusive of fuels, 97% comes from non-metallic - industrial - minerals. Since the industrial minerals furnish a principal source of raw materials for the construction and chemical processing industries and since these two industries, in industrialized nations, generally increase directly with increasing population, the future of industrial mineral production both in the United States and throughout the world is indeed bright. Because of the importance of industrial mineral production, it often surprises those of us in the industrial mineral industry to find that industrial minerals are poorly understood by many of our colleagues in the mining industry. I think that one reason for this comprehension of the industrial mineral industry is that the education of both geologists and mining engineers still markedly emphasizes exploitation of the metals.

The separation of liquids from granular materials has been widely studied by a number of: investigators over a period of years in an effort to more fully understand the physical phenomenon which occurs. Liquid may be removed from solids, or partially removed, by gravity separation, mechanical separation' or heat drying. Mechanical separation is advantageous when compared to heat drying principally from a cost saving standpoint and also on certain materials which are heat sensitive. It is realized however that mechanical separation of liquids has certain practical limitations. In order to evaluate the efficiency of mechanical separation and predict the extent of, liquid removal, it is first necessary to study the forces which hold the liquid to the solids. From a very practical observation using gravity drainage, it is soon obvious that a pile of coarse solids will drain faster and retain less liquid than a pile of finely divided solids of the same material. For commercial operations it is important to estimate the residual liquid which will remain after a mechanical separation. Batel (1) explored the various quantities of liquid present in the interstices of the bulk granular material. From his work and other authors which he has correlated in one of his recent papers, various formulas are now available which permit an empirical relationship to be developed showing residual moisture versus mechanical separating forces.

An attempt has been made to parameterize the population balance model for a ball mill based on measurements of the elementary breakage process obtained using an ultrafast load cell device. Detailed insight obtained concerning the fragmentation of particle assemblies with the ultrafast load cell leads to a better understanding of ball mill grinding. The ball mill breakage function and specific selection function are derived from an average single event representing the multiple breakage events which occur in ball mill grinding. Since both the breakage function and the specific selection function depend on the loading mode in the mill, predictions of breakage mechanisms in ball mills are possible by using data obtained in various elementary loading modes. The application of this model to the description of batch ball milling behavior has resulted in reasonably accurate predictions of product size distributions for various energy inputs.

Searles Valley is located approximately 125 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the Basin and Range Province. Occupying the lowest part of the valley is Searles Dry Lake Playa, which is about 9 miles long and 7 miles wide. Three major subsurface evaporite horizons have been identified and are termed from bottom to top, the Mixed Layer, Lower Salt and Upper Salt. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of runoff from the eastern Sierra Nevada during Quaternary time. The saline beds are generally brine saturated with the important ions being sodium, potassium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride and borate. These ions are present in the brines in various concentrations and have combined to form the minerals halite, hanksite, trona, nahcolite, burkeite, borax, thenardite, sulfohalite, glaserite and others. North American Chemical Company selectively pumps the interstitial brines to feed their chemical plants located on the western edge of Searles Lake. Minerals have been mined since 1873, beginning with borax and trona scraped from the surface. Brine processing began in 1914 with potassium chloride and borax recovery. Expansions have added sodium sulfate and soda ash to the product mix. Currently, dredging of trona ore is also taking place.

Once completed, the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world. The REM represents construction costs of approximately 7.0 billion Canadian dollars. The project consists of 67 km of twin tracks over four branches connected to downtown Montreal. The project includes 26 stations with 3 underground stations in downtown Montreal. One of the underground stations was built using the NATM method with thin permanent shotcrete initial and final liners separated by a sprayed on waterproofing membrane. The 2 other underground stations were built with the cut and cover approach including one using permanent secant pile wall with permanent walers and struts as the support of excavation and the final perimeter wall of the station. The project also includes the rehabilitation and enlargement of the Mont Royal Tunnel. This 100-year-old double track tunnel is about 5 km long. The REM also consists of 3.6 km new TBM tunnel connecting downtown to the Montreal International Airport through saturated soft ground and karstic rock. By the time of RETC, the construction of REM underground structures will be completed. This paper presents the design and construction aspects of the underground structures of this mega project.

This study evaluated the effects of collector type amide-amine compared with those of conventional etheramine acetate (both cationic collectors) on the surface properties of quartz and hematite. An examination of certain properties of the reagents indicated that the new collector amide-amine has CMC (critical micelle concentration) and pKa values (100 mg/L and 8.2, respectively) significantly lower than those of etheramine (800 mg/L and 9.4, respectively). Microflotation tests showed that the recoveries of quartz with amide-amine in all the concentrations tested were higher than those with etheramine. This is attributed to its lower CMC and pKa values. The selectivity window between quartz and hematite flotation using amideamine was higher at pH 10.5 (approximately 80% for 5 mg/L). Therefore, the use of starch is not necessary in siliceous itabirite flotation by amide–amine collector. Zeta potential measurements and infrared spectra reveal that the adsorption of amide-amine collector on quartz surface occurs mainly by electrostatic attraction. Considering the better collectability of amide-amine for quartz flotation and lower adsorption affinity for hematite surface than etheramine, the amide-amine is a promising collector to be used in reversal iron ore flotation.
