The struggle to get the minerals industry seriously interested in high intensity wet magnetic separation* has been difficult. The high capital cost of the equipment, the lack of basic research, the lack of operating information, and the diverse characteristics associated with different minerals and ores have prevented the development and use of HIMS-W on a wide scale. The Climax Molybdenum Company, a Division of American Metal Climax, Inc., located at Climax, Colorado, was among the first companies in the Americas in recent years to support the development of HIMS-W to recover weakly magnetic minerals on a large scale. The Climax Molybdenum Company, one of the world's largest underground mines, processes about 40,000 tons per day of ore, from which about fifty million pounds of molybdenum disulfide are produced each year. By-products include tungsten, iron pyrite, tin, and some monazite.

WHAT IS AI? It's very hard to say. Most researchers and practitioners disagree with nearly any attempted definition, but most would agree that A1 does deal with the development of computer-related methods o f problem-solving. Artificial intelligence is a discipline which seeks to emulate human anatomy and/or thought processes by applying computer science, electronics, and mechanical engineering to the development of natural language processing, machine vision, robotics, and knowledge-based expert systems. Integration of these four fields will someday produce the robots of today's science fiction. A1 addresses problems of structuring large amounts of knowledge and representing relationships with rules and semantic frameworks rather than with mathematical equations. A1 is convergent rather than divergent - - conventional conputer applications use relatively small quantities of input to generate large output, but A1 generally reduces large amounts of information to establish a few major conclusions. The development of A1 has prompted greatly increased efforts on the part of scientists and engineers to understand just how humans think, organize information, approach problem-solving, and form conclusions. Some of the more exciting and possibly far-reaching advances in A1 are coming in this more-or-less soft-science area. Thirty years of A1 research (dating from a 1956 conference at Dartmouth College at which the term A1 was coined) has already spawned many widespread, almost ordinary, products: window graphics, hand-held controllers (mouse). function menus, etc., all in an attempt to make computers and people more compatible. WHAT IS AN ES? A1 can be used to develop EXPERT SYSTEMS, which are computer programs or systems which contain knowledge and rules by which problems can be solved. or at least by which possible solutions can be suggested for very complex problems. A1 can be used to better define problems so that solutions can be found. An ES is designed not to process numbers, but to process information according to rules and logic derived from actual practice and experience. WHY AI? WHY ES? Companies are increasingly aware of the value of accumulated knowledge and experience in designing, building, operating, and maintaining the increasingly complex or expensive physical plants in any business. As knowledge branches out and becomes more specialized, the accumulated learning of a veteran operator or manager or engineer becomes a scarce resource well worth preserving. EXPERT SYSTEMS offer a means of doing that, reinforcing, not replacing, human capabilities.

"The second prime area within the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization exploration area named H22 was delineated in 2013 with the goal to ensure sufficient nodule reserves for profitable mining operations and processing.The knowledge base for area H22 has been obtained from archive materials. The geological situation can be characterized as follows: the sea bottom is represented by tectonic blocks oriented in a sub-meridional direction. According to swath mapping, the depressions (troughs) are contoured at depths of 4500-4600 m while the tops of horsts occur at 4300-4350 m. Volcanic relief occupies 6% of the H22 area; in the eastern part a multicone volcano was detected. Its area at the base is 153 km2. The maximum height of a cone above the base is 850 m. The crystalline basement composed by tholeiitic basalts of late Oligocene age is covered by about 100 m of sediments. Semi-consolidated to consolidated calcareous nanofossil sediments of the Marquesas formation are deposited on the basement. Higher up in the profile sediments of the Clipperton formation occur. They are represented by unconsolidated siliceous (Radiolaria, Diatom) ooze. Sediments containing calcium carbonate have not been detected. Where opaline silica (or CaCO3 if any) content is below 5%, the sediments belong to zeolitic clays or red pelagic clays. Grain size composition of the seabed and the near-seabed sediments in H22 classifies them into clayey silts."

Introduction Most high purity silica is produced from crystalline quartz, generally from sand. However, there is a small area of southern Illinois where a porous, friable white chert rock is found that is very different in physical form from quartz sand. This microcrystalline material, commonly referred to as tripoli, is more easily ground to micron sizes than sand. Although of similar Moh's hardness, microcrystalline tripoli is less abrasive than either ground quartz sand or many synthetic abrasives. Location The southwestern corner of Illinois is underlain by extensive deposits of very porous chert; in some places the material is quite white. Two companies, Illinois Minerals Co. and Tammsco Inc., mine and process this white material. The Illinois Minerals plant is located at Elco, and the Tammsco plant is in Tamms, IL. Both companies mine from various locations within a 10-mile truck haul of their plants. Production from this district has been continuous since at least 1915. Malvern Minerals Co. mines and processes a generally similar microcrystalline, friable novaculite near Hot Springs, AR. Geology The southern Illinois white tripoli area is on the southern flank of the Illinois Basin. The commercial silica zone is a facies of the Clear Creek chert of Lower Devonian Age. To the north, where it occurs deep in the basin, the Clear Creek is a siliceous limestone. In the mining area, thin overburden has allowed access by surface ground water, which has leached away the carbonate content and left a quite pure silica residue. Fossils characteristic of sea bottom deposition, such as brachiopods and trilobites, are occasionally encountered in mining. The structure of the mining area is poorly known, due to infrequent outcrops. Strata in most mines are inclined at dips of 5° to 20°. There appear to be occasional high angle normal and reverse faults, but these are seldom of any significance in mining. The friable white silica zone mined in the Clear Creek chert is overlain by dark brownish-red chert and siliceous shale. Exploration drilling to date has not encountered the base of the microcrystalline tripolitic zone. Chemical content Leaching by ground water solution has removed virtually all the carbonate from the original siliceous limestone. Impurities encountered are red to yellow iron oxides, aluminous clays, and occasional black manganese oxides. The silica has no detectable formula water. A typical chemical analysis and physical properties are listed in Tables 1 and 2. Mineralogy and crystallinity Southern Illinois friable tripoli appears amorphous under the polarizing microscope. No crystal structure and only occasional, vague, patchy anisotropism is evident. However, the material gives an excellent quartz X-ray diffraction pattern. The never ending search for lower unit costs led Pima Mining Company's management to study various alternatives shortly after Expansion III was completed. It soon became apparent that a considerable amount of ore assaying 0.35% copper had to be moved in order to maintain mill feed at the desired 0.54% copper content, which is the overall grade of the ore reserves. Detailed investigations revealed that for a period of 8 - 10 years, about 14,000 tons per day of 0.30 - 0.40% copper ore would pass by the crusher en-route to the low grade stockpile. This ore is very hard, very clean and has to be mined at a relatively uniform rate. A six month pilot plant run testing autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding gave very encouraging results. Since no mining costs need to be charged to the extra tonnage (it had to be mined anyway) the only major costs would be against milling. The decision to proceed was made in August 1970 and Fluor-Utah was retained as the prime design construction contractor. Ore was first put through the new mill on December 29, 1971. By March of 1972 design tonnage of 14,000 TPD had been attained. The first three expansions at Pima Mining Company, 20 miles south of Tucson, increased mill capacity from 3,000 TPD to 36,000 TPD. These expansions included a separate, conventional, three stage crushing plant plus additions to the existing concentrator that primarily duplicated the then current flowsheet. Expansion IV, however, consisted of an entirely new and separate primary crusher and a completely new mill building located about 2,000 feet southeast of the 01 d concentrator. The new mill, using semi-autogenous grinding, produces scavenger and rougher flotation concentrates that are pumped to the old mill for regrinding, cleaning, thickening and filtration.

The Luossavaara "Research Mine" is the First large, offensive effort in mining research conducted by the Swedish state. Over a 5-year period, 1981-1985, the Swedish Mining Research Foundation works in the "Research Mine" on the development of mining systems and equipment. The purpose is to bolster the competitive strength of the Swedish mining and mining equipment industry. The previosly abandoned Luossavaara mine in Kiruna, in northern Sweden, has been reopened especially For the project. Ore is mined and sold during the course of the research project. The income from the sales covers a large portion of the costs for teh research.

Over it’s more than 100-year history, the Kennecott operation has often been at the forefront of innovation; driven by the demands of the lower grade ore-body and the higher costs of operating in the US where wages are generally higher and regulation more restrictive. One way of reducing operating costs in c/lb is to increase the lbs produced at minimal cost. Despite the relatively coarse grind at Kennecott - about 30% >150μm, approximately 20% of the Cu lost to tail is liberated chalcopyrite in the <20μm fraction, and about 30%-40% in the <37μm fraction. In 2020 Kennecott undertook a detailed plant scale test of the magnetic aggregation technology to increase copper recovery by reducing fine copper losses. A paired statistical plant test of magnetic conditioning on one rougher line showed a 1.12% increase in Cu recovery to 97% statistical confidence. The next challenge, unforeseen at the start of the project, was the fabrication and transportation to site of the equipment for the three remaining rougher rows, during the severe supply-chain constraints of the Covid pandemic in 2021. This resulted in delays and unforeseen costs as world-wide transportation became chaotic, particularly transportation via west coast USA. Nevertheless, the project was completed and commissioned, with only minor delays and cost increases, due to a flexible approach to overcoming the hurdles encountered.

In this decade of the 1.970&apos;s it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today&apos;s fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. As part of its mission to develop technology to assure a continuing supply of minerals, the US Bureau of Mines has investigated the flocculation of a Stillwater, MT, chromite ore. The ore was flocculated at different solids contents and at different stirring speeds to determine the importance and effect of hydrodynamic factors. In acidic and basic pH, the chromite ore was flocculated with high molecular weight polyacrylamides differing in the degree of hydrolysis. Polyacrylamides were found to bind to chromite ore particles through hydrogen bonding. The anionicity of the polymer and the pH affected the degree of polymer-particle interaction, which in turn affected polymer conformation at the surface. A polymer conformation with many loops and tails was used to explain high flocculation efficiency. It was found that such a conformation could compensate for poor hydrodynamic conditions.

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control sys- teas to be used when selecting circuits for wash-ing fine coal (28M x 0 size fraction). However, the desliming, declaying and sizing procedures required to ensure efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and dewatering circuit design which is extremely effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 28M x 0 (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster&apos;s definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige&apos;s pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. Anaconda has been active In the Bingham mining district near Tooele, Utah since 1914 when the company acquired International Smelting & Refining Co. Over the years both custom ores and complex Pb-Zn-Cu ores from the district were milled and smelted at International. In 1948 Anaconda acquired the property that covers the present Carr Fork ore body. Since that time active exploration took place in the 50&apos;s followed by detailed geological evaluation in the 60&apos;s. Convinced that high grade Cu deposits would be found at depth, a deep drilling program commenced in the late 60?s, with intersection of the ore zone in 1969. Following extensive deep drilling in the early 70?s, a feasibility study was conducted in 73-74 with board approval given Sept. 6, 1974. The 9,000 t/d mine-mill complex was budgeted at $217 MM over a 5 year schedule with start-up in Sept., 1979. The following discussion includes the concentrator and surface facility portion of the budget or approximately $60 MM of the scope. Special emphasis will be made on equipment selection and layout.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is conducting research and development on a coal-burning gas turbine. This work includes the development of (1) turbine blades resistant to coal ash erosion, (2) equipment to feed coal under pressure to a turbine, (3) an efficient combustion system, and (4) equipment to remove coal ash from the gases that drive the turbine. Initial emphasis is being placed on testing the first turbine ever equipped with blades designed specifically for use with coal as the fuel. Operating tests with this turbine are now in progress. This paper describes the Bureau&apos;s coal-burning gas turbine development program and progress on this operating test.

In spite of the fact that flyrock phenomenon represents the real threat for personnel and machinery, it still remains insufficiently investigated. There are efforts, in the mining community, to explain the causes of flyrock, but the models capable to accurately predict flyrock occurrence and define the flyrock distance still do not exist. This article is an attempt to establish such a predictive model. The model utilized the adaptive nature of artificial neural networks and combined it with the accuracy of numerical modeling of physical phenomena. Necessary data were collected by high-speed camera recordings of actual blasts at three different surface mines and processed for further use for artificial network training. The result was a neuro-numerical couple which was capable to predict flyrock occurrence, estimate the launch velocity of flyrock fragments, and calculate the maximum distance of flyrock fragments. The safe distance was then calculated by multiplying the flyrock distance with a factor of safety. The article explains the procedure for data acquisition and processing, artificial network construction, training, and validation. It also explains the principles of flyrock distance calculation and, finally, provides a definition of factor of safety and safe distance. The results showed that the prediction was satisfactorily accurate and reliable.

Minerals Appraisers/Valuers often find great difficulty or failure in attempting to employ the Sales Comparison Approach to the Market Value Appraisal of development and operating stage mineral properties. An important factor generally overlooked is a comparison of net operating income (NOI) margins on a per-unit-of-production basis between mineral properties, whether these be demonstrated or forecast margins. NOI margins can vary greatly between mines or quarries that are producing similar products. Ultimately, the expected NOI margin determines what a buyer is willing to pay for an income producing property. Common criticisms of the sales comparison approach by minerals appraisers are introduced. These are counterbalanced by raising some issues in the way the inputs for the Income Approach are usually derived by minerals appraisers, and by review of some conspicuous examples of the much too common misuse or abuse of the income approach in market value minerals appraisals. Example transaction analyses and sales comparison analyses are used to demonstrate the author?s methodology for adjusting units of resource in his transaction adjustment tables (see APPENDIX). The examples are used as the basis for discussion of ways to employ adjustments for operating economics and many other factors, while cautioning about the potential for double counting. The conclusions include a recommendation that minerals appraisers attempt to apply at least two of the three valuation approaches when appraising the market or fair value of development and operating stage mineral properties, the two being the sales comparison and income approaches.

Model pillars of limestone, marble, sandstone, and granite, with length-to-diameter ratios of 3, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 (0.286 for granite), were broken in axial compression to determine to what extent an increase in end constraint increased compressive strength. Radial end constraints of 13 to 23 percent of the average axial stress in the pillar, produced by solid steel rings bonded with epoxy to the ends of dogbone-shaped specimens, increased compressive strength somewhat above that of cylindrical pillars without ring constraint. However, when the results were compared with those obtained by other investigators for straight specimens of several rock types taken collectively, with L/D ratios greater than 0.5, the resulting strengths were not significantly different. Thus, the amount of end constraint produced by the solid steel rings was about the same as that produced by the friction from the steel end plates. In other tests a radial prestress of 3,000 psi or 5,000 psi was applied prior to axial loading by adjustable hardened steel rings to increase the constraint above that obtained for the solid rings. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 3,000 psi prestress, was 54.3 percent for limestone, 40.3 percent for marble, 44.7 percent for sandstone, and 23.4 percent for granite. The average radial constraint stress, expressed as a percentage of the average axial pillar stress at failure for the 5,000 psi prestress, was 74.2 percent for limestone, 51.2 percent for marble, 61.6 percent for sandstone, and 29.7 percent for granite. These constraints increased the compressive strength significantly above the strength of straight specimens and solid-ring constrained specimens. These results suggest that large horizontal stresses in orebodies mined by the room and pillar method should increase the strength of the pillars and allow an increase in ore recovery by a reduction of pillar size when major structural defects are absent.

The need for onsite gas monitoring during, or following, a major incident at an underground coal mine has long been recognised. Recommendations from inquiries following Queensland mine disasters have included ?qualified persons and equipment for rapid analysis of gas samples be available in times of emergency? and that ?this may be accomplished by either mobile laboratories or laboratories established in each mining locality.? Following the Moura No. 2 disaster, the Queensland Government allocated funds to Simtars for a mobile laboratory to respond should such a disaster occur again in the future. This vehicle was commissioned in 1997 and has been used at many mine sites under a wide range of scenarios. Simtars, armed with over ten years of operational experience with this mobile laboratory, has taken an active role in the design and construction of a modernised replacement unit. With a twenty point tube bundle system and ultrafast gas chromatograph the result is, arguably, the best equipped mobile gas analysis laboratory for mine emergency response in the world. This paper outlines the features of the new laboratory, its capabilities and the philosophy behind the design and inclusions.

During 1964 and 1965 a mineral exploration program was carried out over an area of approximately 250 square miles, located in the Anvil-Vangorda Creek area of east central Yukon, 125 miles northwest of Whitehorse. The Vangorda deposit, a massive lead-zinc sulphide body discovered in 1953, was centred in the area proposed for exploration, a northwest trending belt located between the southwestern flank of the Anvil Range and Pelly River. Exploration for base metals in the remote Anvil area had previously been restricted by poor metal markets in the late 1950&apos;s. Regional geologic information was also limited except for publication of a scale 1 inch to 4 mile map by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. To effectively explore this area, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methods were essential due to extensive overburden cover varying in depth from a few feet to over 300 feet. (Figure (i) Key Map) Dynasty Explorations initiated the first comprehensive regional exploration program in the Anvil area, utilizing saturation prospecting methods employing geologic, geochemical and geophysical methods. The program involved an approach demanding continual modification of technical and physical logistics. After a total of 12 months of field work involving an expenditure of approximately $450,00, massive sulphides were discovered which subsequently proved to be an economic orebody. Thirteen properties had been acquired and explored. Ten separate geophysical anomalies had been outlined by a combination of magnetic, electric and gravimetric survey techniques of which five were tested by rotary drilling and two by diamond core drilling. The discovery of the Faro deposit was a direct result of this program.
