A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in-situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in-situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in one area of the mine that contains Argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for Argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the other four primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

Granitic Pegmatite deposits are the chief source of commercial feldspar, micas, lithium minerals, tantalum-columbium, beryl, and certain types of kaolin. The output from pegmatite mines in the United States is small compared to other mineral products in terms of bulk or value, and much of it comprises only minor metals and nonmetals. Nevertheless, pegmatite minerals play a vital part in our domestic industrial economy, particularly in the ceramic and electrical industries. Numerous special purpose uses also are important, even though they require small quantities of raw materials. In recent years, realizing the potential importance of the pegmatite minerals, the U.S. Geological Survey, the United States Bureau of Mines, several state Bureaus of Mines, and a few private companies have carried on extensive programs of pegmatite studies in the New England and southeastern states, in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, in the Rocky Mountain region of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and in various parts of Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Currently, some of the pegmatite minerals such as micas and spodumene are selectively separated by the flotation process. To a lesser extent a few plants are selectively floating feldspar and quartz. Much of the credit for the above progress goes to the fine work done by U.S. Bureau of Mines (1), and companies such as Foote Minerals (2). Additional research efforts by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines (3) has successfully demonstrated selective separation of micas, beryl, spodumene, lepidolite, microlite, quartz and feldspar from a complex Pegmatite containing all these minerals. Since the nature of the mineralization of various valuable components of a pegmatite deposit is such that selective separation of some of these can be carried out at a coarse size using the Heavy Media Separation technique, it was felt that such a system should be investigated for selective preconcentration of their minerals. It was also felt that of all the :MS systems available, the DYNA WHIRLPOOL (DWP) device which allows a close control and adjustment of specific gravity should provide a means of achieving the above goal. Once the desired preconcentration of one or more of the pegmatite mineral assemblage is achieved, the available selective flotation techniques should provide effective recovery of various minerals into marketable products. This paper presents technical and economic aspects of selective preconcentration of some of the pegmatite minerals followed by selective flotation to produce marketable products.

The first part of this paper comprises a general discussion on refractory gold ores and their mineralogy processing methods now in use are reviewed and test procedures for the important methods are discussed. Factors determining the selection of a process are outlined. The paper includes a survey of production plants using pressure oxidation, roasting and biological oxidation to process refractory ore. The status of processes under development is briefly reviewed.

Empirical and numerical methods are the two extremes of the tools available for the seismic design of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Both have their limitations: when relying on purely empirical methods directly relevant experience may be scant; site data may be insufficient to justify a comprehensive dynamic analysis. The primary purpose of this paper is to review the analytical tools available to the design engineer of subsurface excavations and underground structures. Particular attention is devoted to simplifed models that appear to be applicable in many practical cases.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on a dual leaching method that offers the potential for the economic recovery of the silver as well as the manganese contained in some of the domestic manganiferous silver deposits. The method is an initial leach of the manganese with aqueous SO2 followed by a neutralization rinse, and then by a second leach for the extraction of silver with cyanide solution. Refractory silver in these ores is either bound by the high-valence manganese, chemically resistent to cyanide leaching, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization. Less than 10 pct of the silver was extracted when -1 in +1/2 in (-2.5 cm + 1.3 cm) ore pieces were leached directly with cyanide. However, extractions of 25 to 82 pct for silver and 65 to 96 pct for manganese were attained in laboratory column leach tests using the dual method on the same size ore pieces from six domestic deposits.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it “feels right”. We have developed procedures to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will be suitable for copper heap leaching.

INTRODUCTION With only about 30% of Japan's entire population served by sewer systems at the end of 1980, extensive sewerage construction programs have been implemented. As major sewer networks in large cities are near completion, construction of smaller sewer networks in less populated areas and branch sewers in urban areas is on the rise, where a demand for sewer tunnels of 600mm to 1500mm diameter is very heavy. The pipe jacking technique, usually employed to excavate such small diameter tunnels, therefore has become the subject of further technological development and sophistication to cope with the increasing volume of construction. At the 1979 RETC, the state of the art on the slurry shield tunneling method at that time was reported. This paper is a follow up to the last paper and discusses a newly developed boulder crushing equipment and automatic pipe jacking system for the slurry shield method and their application. Such technological advancement as high-degree mechanization and automation will significantly improve tunneling operations in response to the aging society to come. Through application of the technique on so called factory automation, this is a step towards field automation for the construction industry.

Improvements in fine (28x0) and ultrafine (200x0) coal cleaning is an acknowledged goal with potential benefits in both steam and metallurgical coal markets. This work focuses on adaptation to fine coal flotation of FLOTE, a computer simulation model of the froth flotation process originally developed in the hard minerals field. FLOTE describes the flotation of solids based on particle surface activity, composition, and size. The quasi steady state model was applied to predict flotation performance at an Eastern Kentucky, full scale metallurgical coal preparation plant. Parameter estimation and model testing used detailed flotation test data from a five stage rougher flotation bank. Overall grade/recovery predictions compared well with known plant performance under variation of principally feed grade, plant throughput and reagent addition; however, grade/ recovery predictions for each cell weaken under overloading conditions. Analysis of grade/recovery over a range of sizes is presented. Suggested model improvements and extensions are discussed.

AngloGold Ashanti operates the world`s deepest mine, Mponeng gold mine, in South Africa. A vast refrigeration and ventilation system provides acceptable working conditions 3800m below surface at 60°C rock temperature. In such a system, optimisation and assessment of modifications becomes very difficult. With that in mind, a research project was launched to determine whether recently developed system simulation technology can be applied to a mine as vast and complex as Mponeng. Using the techniques and methods as implemented in FLOWNEX software, it was indeed proven to be possible to do a mine-wide combined simulation of compressed air flow, ventilation air psychrometry and refrigeration water systems. Interactions between the various streams included heat transfer, pressure drop, evaporation and condensation. The simulation model was used in a parametric study to test various water flow and temperature operating points for the refrigeration system. It was found that, given current limitations, the mine refrigeration system is running fairly close to optimal but with some opportunities for improvement. The simulation model also provided useful insight for future changes or extensions to the system.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

Hard times continued to plague the industry when the calendar rolled over to 2000. During 1999, the United States economy had grown vigorously, capping the longest economic expansion in United States history. However, the mining industry was not so fortunate. Commodity prices remained in a slump in the “new-economy” that was fueled by excitement and speculation about the power of the Internet during the infancy of the Information Age. Much of the investment money that once went to mining and exploration was now headed to the world of virtual gold mines. SME President Donald E. Ranta implemented new technology into his plans for SME. His two major goals were new membership growth and to foster the establishment of the comprehensive Internet presence for the Society’s technical information. His strategic priorities included enhancing the quality and quantity of publications, programs, meetings and short courses. “The Internet is the vehicle that will advance the priorities,” he said.

One of the prime examples of the versatility of the MARCONAFLO system, which is a body of technology comprising the means to handle, store, load, transport, discharge and reclaim mineral commodities in slurry form, is the direct application of this process to leaching ores. The initial approach was to provide a much improved materials handling system for the transport of copper ores; however, an extensive development program, inclusive of prototype and pilot plant tests, has established that a new leaching concept is possible with this system. Data are presented from the leaching operation of a 25 TPD pilot plant utilizing a copper-oxide ore, mainly chrysocolla. This pilot plant was designed to incorporate true countercurrent flow where the ore is actually in motion, as contrary to vat leaching operations, and the ore being successfully leached is fine crushed ore (3/8-inch x o), contrary to agitation leach circuits. Extractions in excess of 85% of the soluble values are common with only 15 hours of retention time in the MARCONAFLO leaching system.

Mining heritage can be of outstanding value for many regions around the world, because mining has been done for thousands of years for the benefit of mankind and its development. This paper presents an ongoing project creating a general guideline for the handling of mining heritage on the basis of experiences made in Germany. Interactions of stakeholders in the ?heritage network? as well as strategies for the technical proceeding will be described. An action plan for the sustainable handling of mining heritage has already been developed in part, which includes necessary measures. Best-practice recommendations will be derived. Banks frequently manage large privately owned mineral land trust accounts for estate heirs. The bank has a fiduciary obligation to follow the “Prudent Man Rule”, which requires that trust properties be managed at least as well as a prudent and knowledgeable owner could. However, banks may not have internal staff proficient at mineral property values, lease contracts, royalties, mining practices, etc. This is an opportunity for experienced geologic consultants and certified minerals appraisers to provide needed help. Items valuable to Trust managers may include: 1. Marketing privately owned mineral trust lands to mining or oil & gas firms, assuring competitive offering prices and terms; 2. Negotiating favorable new mineral lease and purchase-option contracts; 3. Monitoring progress of mining, royalty payments, land reclamation, and environmental clean-up work; 4. Balancing future mining income with later industrial, commercial or housing development, timber harvest, etc.; 5. Assuring that Depletion Allowance tax advantage is taken for actual mine royalty payments, but not for annual non-mining lease (rental) income; 6. Appraising in-ground mineral value for bank audits, estate tax valuations, and equitable property division between heirs; and 7. Serving as expert witness, representing the legal interests of the bank, trusts, and the mineral heirs in litigation. Banks do welcome reliable advice which assists them in achieving the “Prudent Man Rule” and improving mineral income to their land Trust accounts.

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cuft), tons (/T) (2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.76m3 1 cu ft =0.28m3 1st = 0.9 t7 1 acre = 0.40 ha or m2 In several cases the royalty is a percentage of the finished products, sale price and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. Bentonite and newly discovered deposits of sepiolite, saponite, and hectorite are now being processed and marketed from the Amargosa Valley of Nevada. All of these deposits are large. The bentonite has been known for decades and is the whitest known. The only other sepiolite deposit is in Spain. The only other commercial hectorite deposit is at Hector, California. No other saponite deposit is known. All the components except bentonite are hydrous magnesium silicates. The bentonite is mixed layer Na-Ca. All the materials have characteristics unique to their locale and type, such as high yield point for drilling muds and liquid suspending agents. The sepiolite has geothermal stability. Figure 1.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling of a potential nuclear waste repository drift may be an important tool to estimate moisture redistribution caused by natural convection within the drift. To refine and support CFD techniques, a small laboratory cold-trap experiment was developed. Results from numerical modeling of the laboratory experiment show the sensitivity of the bulk air flow rate and average air temperature within the drift to several key parameters, including various boundary condition assumptions and surrounding porous media properties.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.
