Granular systems, i.e. particles with realistic shapes, are commonly encountered in nature and industry. While the discrete element method (DEM) is a tool for the simulation of granular flow, in most of the DEM simulation particles are assumed to be spherical. It is questionable whether results drawn from a spherical particle could be easily transferred to a non-spherical particle. Thus, obtaining a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics of granular flows is not only of academic interest, but is also highly related to industrial applications. An in-house developed DEM software called KMPCDEM ©, which was coded to handle non-spherical particles, was used to simulate the particle behaviour. In this paper, the effect of particle shape on the dynamics of particles of non-spherical and spherical shape, including algorithms for the determination of the particle orientation, the moment of inertia, shape representation, and computation time was described. The assumption of a spherical shape has been justified by the complexity of simulation and significantly higher computation time if a realistic shape for particles was used. Dynamics differences showed that findings obtained from spherical particle systems could not be readily extrapolated to non-spherical particle systems. Consequently, particle shape is an important, if not even the most important parameter to be considered in DEM simulations, and therefore has to be captured accurately if DEM is to be used as a predictive tool. This paper investigates the effect of chemical and physical operational parameters on the reverse flotation of Timbopeba itabirite iron ore in a pilot-scale pneumatic flotation cell. Operational parameters include collector and depressant dosages, feed rate, superficial gas velocity and solids concentration. Results show that increasing collector dosage results in an increase in quartz recovery, particularly for the coarser quartz where recovery increases by nearly 30%. Increasing depressant dosage results in a decrease in both quartz recovery and hematite loss, for the coarser hematite particles. Increasing the feed rate has no effect on quartz recovery or hematite loss, suggesting that the pneumatic flotation cell is not residence time constrained. Increasing the superficial gas velocity results in an increase in quartz recovery to an optimum at a Jg of around 0.6 cm/s after which it decreases significantly, particularly for the coarser particles where recovery decreases by as much as 50%. Decreasing the solids concentration does not affect quartz recovery but results in significant decreases in hematite loss. Here, fine and coarse hematite loss decreases from around 25% to 12% and 10% to 2% respectively. Superficial gas velocity and solids concentration are operating parameters which have the largest effect on the flotation performance of the pneumatic flotation cell. Results suggest that this flotation cell should be operated at relatively low superficial gas velocities and solids concentrations. However, these are pilot-scale findings and would need to be tested at an industrial-scale where different operating conditions may be optimal. This paper presents an actor-critic reinforcement learning (RL) method to allocate trucks and shovels in open-pit mines, while defining short-term production scheduling of an industrial mining complex, given new information collected during operations. This new data obtained from sensors update the uncertainty of the orebody models. The RL agents interact with the mining complex environment; exploring the solution space, learning actions to improve metal production and equipment utilisation. A case study is presented at a copper mining complex, highlighting the method’s ability to adapt and make informed decisions while collecting new information.

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. "A new approach is proposed to perform relativistic comparisons between alternative operational risk management solutions by taking into account the impact of each operational activity on overall system performance. A specific case study, to which this new approach is applied, involves the deployment of safety systems in underground mining operations. Conflicting objectives to be satisfied are the minimization of risk to human lives and the minimization of production losses. As the focus in this case is primarily on the mitigation of risk, the approach that was applied is referred to as activity-based risk (ABR) analysis. Existing development process and risk management methods used in the South African mining environment were analysed by means of observations, a case study, technical documentation, and literature review. It was evident from this analysis that a discontinuity existed between the acquisition and operational phases in terms of the management of safety risk in the acquisition of electronic safety equipment when viewed from a full lifecycle perspective. This discontinuity could be addressed by defining a risk perspective in the system development phase by employing ABR in the preliminary design phase of a system’s engineering life-cycle. The focus of the ABR system development process is to find the functional definition and configuration of safety equipment that addresses both safety and productivity when taking into account human performance variability. In doing so, a balance between productivity and safety is found in a relativistic sense. IntroductionIn any system life-cycle, two major phases exist, namely system acquisition and operation (including maintenance). A distinction is made between acquisition and procurement, where acquisition includes system development and integration as specific engineering activities. In the development phase of a new system, conceptual design, preliminary design, and detail design phases follow in this order to define a complete system, after which the system is put into production and implemented in an operational environment—these activities chronologically define system acquisition in the context of this paper. It is not uncommon that differences exist between the risk management perspective during acquisition of a system and risk management perspective during operation, where nontechnical aspects are often ignored during acquisition, but are then encountered and found to be problematic during operation (Leveson, 2012). These differences also exist in the mining industry."

There can be very few members of the Institute who failed to appreciate this extremely interesting and informative paper by Mr Rohrmann of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation. This story of vanadium in South Africa has a very wide appeal to members of our profession: it embraces both ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, and both hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. In a comparatively short time, South Africa has become one of the the world's leading producers of vanadium.

Models of cone crushers and vibrating screens are described. These models have been constructed from actual plant data using a systematic model-building technique. Included in this technique is regression analysis using multi-dimensional spline functions. The models have been used too simulate complete crushing plants and hence to design and evaluate a control system for crushing plants.
