Mr D. Twigg graduated in Metallurgy at the Sheffield Polytechnic, and later obtained a Master of Science degree at the University of Bradford. Mr I.D. Matthews matriculated at Roosevelt High School and joined the No. 1 Parachute Battalion in 1968. He worked in Zimbabwe for 31 years in geological prospecting, civil engineering, and open-pit mining.

INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

"Excessive amounts of moisture in product coal can influence the efficiency of downstream utilization processes due to a decreased calorific value and handling problems. Stockpiles can be used to decrease the moisture content of coal by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. This paper is focused on the evaporation of moisture from a coal stockpile surface with the aim of investigating the effect of particle size on the rate of evaporation as well as the depth to which evaporation extends.It was observed that moisture initially evaporates at a higher rate from a stockpile consisting of fine particles (-6.7 mm) than from coarser particles (-13.2 mm +6.7 mm). This high rate of evaporation is restricted to the outer shell of the fine coal stockpile. However, for coarse coal, the porous nature increases the depth at which evaporation occurs. Evaporation of moisture was observed up to the fourth day of each experimental run, after which steady state was obtained. It was shown the water can evaporate from the surface into the body of the stockpile, depending on the coal particle size and void spacing. An experimental reclaim depth of 0.4 m was achieved after 4 days. IntroductionCoal stockpiles serve as surge capacity for downstream utilization processes and can also be used for moisture reduction by means of gravity drainage and evaporation. Excessive amounts of moisture in coal can cause handling problems and, most importantly, will decrease the calorific value, leading to inefficient combustion.Research has shown that evaporation by means of wind and solar action is considerably more effective than gravity drainage(Williams, D.J. 2006), but the effect is limited to a restricted depth from the exterior of the stockpile (Boyapati, E. and Oates, A. 1994; CSEM-UAE, 2010). The effectiveness of wind and solar action can be improved by orienting the stockpile perpendicular to the predominant wind direction, maximizing the surface area of the pile, and reclaiming the coal from the pile gradually in shallow cuts over a large area (Williams, D.J. 2006)."

Dry coal processing is becoming increasingly favoured as a fine coal beneficiation technique. The decline in suitable good-quality coal, as well as the ongoing decrease in usable process water, makes dry beneficiation of the fine coal fraction even more crucial. Dry fine coal beneficiation is a relatively young process with most of the methods still in the developmental phase. Additionally, many of the dry processing options available are better suited for coarser (+6 mm) and easy-to-beneficiate coal. Air winnowing for fine particles has been established in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, which indicates that the method can be used to separate smaller particles on a density basis and therefore, may prove effective in the coal industry as well. A proof of concept study was conducted using both computer-based simulations (which do not form part of this paper) and physical experiments. The initial winnowing unit consisted of a closed box with a horizontal air stream flowing through the top section. Coal particles were injected into the air stream and displaced horizontally across a distance (x), depending on the particle size and density, thus actuating a separation based on these two parameters. For this study particle sizes of 6, 4 and 2 mm were used all with a density ranging from 1200 kg·m-3 to 2000 kg·m-3. The simulation in Star CCM+ confirmed the findings of the mathematic behavioural model and provided a virtual representation of the separation using streamlines and particle tracks. The coal tests prove that size separation can be achieved at an airflow velocity of 21 m·s-1 and the density cut-point can also be predicted by using the prediction matrices constructed as part of this study. The results show efficiency values (EPM) of 0.11 and 0.09 at density cut-points of 1400 kg·m-3 and 1500 kg·m-3 respectively. The data obtained from the study indicates that air winnowing can be used to separate fine coal particles based on both size and density. However, in order to achieve an efficient density separation, a narrow size range is required. With some improvements to the model, simulation, method and design, the separation efficiency can also be improved. The next phase of testing will include the upscaling of the process to a demonstration plant, optimising the separation unit and testing the method on different qualities of coal. Spiral concentrators are widely used in the coal industry treating fine (-1mm) coal. Their application was a limitation to the product quality until the introduction of low-cut spirals which allow a lower quality ash product to be produced, thus expanding the market. The Exxaro Grootegeluk 1 (GG1) plant has a two-stage traditional rougher-cleaner spiral circuit using conventional SX4 spirals to produce semi-soft coking coal product at 12.5% ash by mass. The overall plant product is 10.3% ash meaning that the coarser sized coal dense medium separation circuits must compensate. A low density cut-point spiral targetting 10.3% ash would thus be beneficial to the overall complex. The spirals were tested in the two-stage plant environment and in a pilot plant. This paper discusses the findings and compares a two stage four-turn low density cut and conventional spiral. The two spiral technologies were unable to sustain a 10.3% ash product. Pilot test work was also conducted on GG1 coal, demonstrating that an eight-turn low density cut-point spiral achieves the targetted 10.3% ash under controlled conditions. The Alusaf aluminium smelter at Richards Bay by H. T. KAISER, B.Sc. (Pta), M.B.L. (Unisa) (Visitor) and P. DE WAAL, B.Sc., B.lng. (Mech.) (Stell.) (Visitor) A description is given of the aluminium smelter at Richards Bay, which operates on the Hall-Heroult electrolysis principle. The annual output of metal (average 99,7 per cent aluminium) is approximately 7S 000 tons. Since its commissioning in 1971, the plant has fulfilled South Africa's total demand for low-alloy rolling slabs, extrusion billets, remelt ingots, and electrical conductor rod. The plant layout allows for sufficient expansion of its capacity to meet longterm increases in demand.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

Iron ore concentrate is used as the fresh feed of pelletising plants. The green pellet properties depend on iron concentrate characteristics such as particle size distribution (PSD), specific surface area (Blaine value), iron grade, moisture content and grinding methods. The grinding methods affects particle size distribution and Blaine value. To find out the effects of grinding methods on pelletising process, green pellets were produced with concentrates that were reground by means of HPGR (high pressure grinding rolls) and ball mill. The Blaine values of ground concentrates in both types of milling were approximately 1400, 1600 and 1800 cm2/gr. The results of green pelletising tests on a pilot plant scale showed that at the same Blaine values, drop numbers of green pellets produced by ground concentrate inside HPGR were higher than the green pellets produced by ground concentrate inside a ball mill. Also, reground concentrates by means of HPGR, in comparison with ball mill, caused the production of green pellets, at higher wet and dry compression strengths. As a result, it was found that preparing the pelletising feed by means of HPGR led to more positive effects on the properties of green pellets. This paper focuses on the application of ion exchange technology for the recovery of copper from a leach solution originating from a heap bioleach in which base metals are leached from a low-grade ore that bears platinum group metals. Screening tests indicated that Dow XUS43605 has high selectivity for copper over the other metals in the solution, namely nickel, iron, cobalt, zinc, manganese, and aluminium. Batch adsorption kinetic experiments showed that copper adsorption equilibrium is attained at a fast rate. The kinetics of adsorption increased as the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C due to the decrease in solution viscosity and the subsequent improved intra-particle mass diffusion. Single-component Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were fitted to the batch copper adsorption equilibrium data, and a maximum copper capacity of 26 g/l was observed for Dow XUS43605. The effects of flow rate, temperature, pH, and initial metal concentration on the dynamic recovery of copper were investigated in fixed-bed columns, and it was determined that temperature and flow rate had the most significant impacts on the loading of copper on the resin at copper breakthrough. A 36% increase in copper loading at breakthrough was observed when the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C. Finally, it was determined that a split elution is possible by using different concentrations of H2S04 to first elute co-loaded nickel from the resin, followed by the elution of copper.

The use of backfill for regional and local support is receiving increasing attention in the South African mining industry. To ensure that fill materials meet the purposes for which they are intended, a test procedure to characterize the load-deformation characteristics for a particular fill was developed. The major variables identified as influencing the load-bearing proper- ties of backfill include particle size distribution, porosity, width-to-height ratio, strain rate, confinement, water content, and additives. The influence of these variables on the performance of backfill is described in relation to crushed waste, dewatered tailings and deslimed tailings. These investigations confirmed that no single test could be used to define the overall stress-strain behaviour of a selected fill. Nevertheless, resulting from this work, a preliminary standard test procedure for uncemented backfill materials, com- prising a suite of tests in unconfined and confined compression, has been formulated. This test procedure is a significant advance towards a more meaningful evaluation of fill materials. Test results will also provide numerical information for input use in computer programs for the design of mine layouts incorporating backfill.

G. H. HENDERSON INTRODUCTION It is a pleasure to have read Mr Schuman's wide ranging and highly informative paper and also to congratulate him. Before proceeding to give views on the use and preservation of coal in South Africa, it is perhaps apposite to look at the South African scene on the world canvas. Mr Schuman's figures in his Table I are highly revealing. The Table shows expected consumption, export and import demand in the year 1980 by the continents of the world. The Republic of South Africa is shown as one of only four exporting countries at that date, although in the interim, Australia has become an exporter and will continue to grow as an exporter of coal. Huge fields have been proved in recent years. There is reason to think that for some years, coal and its economical uses have been under-estimated. The importation of oil carries a constant question mark and the exciting possibilities expressed in the uses of Dranium a decade ago for power generation, appear to have met with some setback. Present indications are that breederreactors will be delayed until about 1990. The capital cost of such reactors, too, is enormous. By 1980 it has been estimated that 20 per cent of the energy required by the leading ten nations of the world will come from nuclear power, but 80 per cent would then remain for fossil fuels and hydro generation. COAL DEMAND AND USAGE It is of interest to record that coal production in all the countries of Europe has declined markedly in the last 25 years. This is due to competition from oil, gas and nuclear power and also for sociological reasons; but there are signs that efforts will be made to resuscitate, at least in some measure, the mining of coking coals for which there is a strong and growing demand. Possibly all hard coal now mined in Germany has coking properties and that country is self-sufficient in this commodity. Germany might perhaps consider selling coking coal to her neighbours and importing additional coal for power-raising purposes. It has been frequently stated in American publications that the coal reserves of the D.S.A. are sufficient for 1 000 years. What that means, I do not know, but it is at least an indication that America has huge reserves of coal. Domestic and export demand in the U.S.A. in 1968 exceeded production for the first time. In 1969, the United States' output amounted to some 556 million tons, an increase of less than 2 per cent on the previous year. The output achieved fell short of demand, domestic and export, by more than 7 000 000 tons. This has caused and is continuing to cause anxiety in the U.S.A. In many countries young men for a number of reasons, largely environmental and social, are not coming forward in sufficient numbers for mining requirements and the same pattern has revealed itself in the Republic. This is, indeed, alarming because mining men in large numbers will be required to meet the estimated tonnage requirements set out in the following Table: It is difficult to visualise the replacement of these coal requirements either by oil or by nuclear fuels. The coal must be mined and men are required for the purpose. Unless a greater section of the population is allowed to participate in the more responsible aspects of mining, there is a serious likelihood that demand will not be matched by output. In addition to local demand, a lively export trade is possible. Exports are dependent on the future capacity of the South African Railways and Harbours and on Government policy. An export figure of 10000000 tons per year during the decade can be visualised and this figure would raise total estimated sales production to a figure of over 100 000 000 tons in 1980. Hydrocyclones are widely used in wet mineral classification applications and can be notoriously prone to wear. The methods currently used for quantifying hydrocyclone wear profiles are mostly twodimensional. In this paper it was attempted to quantify and monitor wear in three-dimensions, using a micro-CT scanner (Nikon XTH 225 ST). Hydrocyclone wear and, more specifically, spigot wear was investigated on a Multotec HC250 (Dc 250 mm, barrel diameter) hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone is lined by a vulcanised natural rubber compound within a metal shell, with a thermosetting polyurethane spigot and vortex finder. Tests were conducted on the hydrocyclone in a pilot-scale recirculating test setup. The wear rate of the spigot was quantified by measuring the volume change within the spigot over 122 days in operation, using the micro-CT scanner. After 122 days in operation (recirculating feed materials) the wear in the hydrocyclone led to only a 13.67% loss of spigot volume. The relatively low wear rate could be related to the fact that material recirculation led to particle smoothing and a reduction in size, thereby decreasing the wear rate. This also shows the enormous influence that particle shape and size have on wear. The research was conducted with the support of Multotec, NECSA and the University of Pretoria. Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability

Water-cooled copper tap-hole blocks provide an effective means of extending the life of tap-hole refractories, as the lower temperature of the refractory material inhibits wear and other damage and promotes the formation of a protective frozen slag layer. This is particularly beneficial during prolonged tapping cycles. The copper block forms an integral part of the lining, and provides mechanical support to the refractory, facilitating rapid replacement of tapping channel bricks without disturbing the surrounding lining. Safety considerations are an important design factor, and the positioning of the water channels is optimized to prevent leaks although the copper is not in direct contact with the molten fluids during normal operation. Water-cooled copper blocks designed by Tenova Pyromet have successfully been utilized on metal, matte, and slag tap-holes for a number of processes, including nickel, platinum group metals, and mineral wool.

Reverse flotation by cationic collectors is the classical method to reduce the silicon content in magnesite. But because of the low selectivity, there is a large loss of magnesite in the reverse flotation froth. To improve the efficiency of the collector, a novel collector named BK433 was developed in this paper. In order to determine the performance of the BK433 collector, a systematic experimental study was carried out with a high silicon magnesite in China. The suitable pH environment of slurry was confirmed, the depression effect of different depressants was investigated, and the flotation effect was compared with commonly used traditional collectors. The results show that the BK433 shows remarkable good selectivity and collection ability. After the 4 stages reverse flotation, the SiO2 content decreased from 3.76% to 0.25%, SiO2 impurity removal rate reached 94.69%. Meanwhile, the MgO content increased from 45.06% to 46.73%，the recovery of obtained concentrate (calculated by MgO) was 82.79%. Keywords: Magnesite, Desilicication, Reverse flotation, Collector

The dispersion of mature fine oil sands tailings (MFT) by the addition of sodium lignosulfonate was studied using contact angle measurements, optical scattering, and particle size measurements. Lignosulfonate caused the release of residual bitumen to the slurry surface and settlement of fines. Dynamic contact angle by captive bubble measurements were carried out on bitumen to determine the effect of the dispersant on the wettability of bitumen. Lignosulfonate caused a change in the aggregation state of the MFT and increased sedimentation of particles, as indicated by optical scattering measurements. Zeta potential measurements indicate that this change was caused by an increase in adsorption of lignosulfonate onto particles, which caused improved settling of the colloid. Ultraviolet Visible (UV) spectrophotometry and organic carbon content measurements showed that only a small amount of the reagent remains in the aqueous phase of the tailings, which is critical for decontamination of recycled water. The demand for stainless steel is ever-increasing. As an essential element in stainless steel-making process, so is the demand of chromite concentrate. At the same time, the industry proven technologies for beneficiation of chromite are limited. Chromite is only crushed, screened and jigged to produce a concentrate. However, for ultrafine and low-grade material, no satisfactory beneficiation methods for the enrichment of chromite fines exist in industrial operation. This poses a clear challenge for the industry, which Primetals Technologies has addressed with the development of a new beneficiation process. The aim of this process was to enrich low grade chromite tailings to a quality suitable for the smelting process. Required concentrate grades are different over the world, concentrate grades of Cr2O3=40% and lower are found at the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. The target for the present study was a Cr2O3-grade in the area of 49%. Three different chromite tailings with Cr2O3 grades between 16 % and 29 % were part of a study, executed by Primetals Technologies. All three tailing materials were characterised by Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). Based on the physical, chemical and mineralogical findings, process flowsheets were developed. The process flowsheets included grinding to ensure a full liberation of the chromite. The liberated material was classified at a cut size of 63 μm to a coarse and fine fraction. Gravity separation and flotation processes were tested with the coarse particle fraction. Due to the limitations of gravity separation with fine particles, only the flotation process is suitable and was tested with the fine fraction < 63 μm. A Design of Experiment (DoE) with six factors, each three levels, was conducted to identify optimal parameters for the fine chromite flotation. Two different collectors were tested: a phosphoric acid ester and a fatty acid type collector. In small scale test work a chromite concentration suitable for the smelting process was achieved.
