Some of the challenges facing the flotation of base metal sulphides are the opening of new and varying ore bodies as well as maintaining essential skills in plants. Flotation reagent research focuses not only on improving flotation grade and recovery, but also on producing reagents robust enough to cope with changes. A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

Scandium is an important industrial metal for which demand is projected to increase in the future. Although many Sc deposits are secondary, Sc is scavenged by clinopyroxene during fractional crystallization of primary, mafic-ultramafic magmas. Sc may thus occur in sub-economic concentrations in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In this work, we present new data on the concentration of Sc in the Bushveld Complex (BC) of South Africa. The eastern and western limbs of the BC are considered to be largely pristine, primary magmatic deposits, whereas the northern limb shows evidence of largescale, localized crustal contamination. Samples from the primary magmatic cumulates of the eastern limb, from the mineralized Flatreef of the northern limb, and from the crustal-contaminated Footwall Assimilation Zone (FAZ) of the Flatreef were analysed for Sc. Despite the FAZ containing abundant clinopyroxene, interpreted to have recrystallized from the original cumulates in the presence of melted sedimentary rocks, no significant differences are seen in the concentration of Sc compared to other cumulate rocks of the BC containing less-abundant clinopyroxene. The concentration of Sc in the analysed samples is mainly controlled by mineralogy, with anorthosites, chromitites, and harzburgites containing under 20 ppm, and norites and pyroxenites containing 20–40 ppm. The parapyroxenites of the FAZ are less enriched in Sc than expected, suggesting that Sc may have been lost during alteration and recrystallization.

"The complexity of the mining and metallurgical operations of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, has made it necessary to use computer-assisted planning techniques in order to maximize copper production and marginal contribution to profit. The most successful of the Group Production Scheduling systems utilized linear programming to optimize the concentrate routing only. This third-generation system was commissioned in March, 1968.It bad become necessary by March, 1970, to expand the long-term planning activities and to take into account new mines and new concentrate treatment schemes. Technical difficulties and manpower limitations made it impossible to expand the third-generation system, and it was decided to construct a new Group Production Scheduling system using only linear programming.The plant models in the new fourth-generation system are based on data available from the monthly reports of the metallurgical plants. The models consist of mass balances and empirical relationships. Matrix coefficient assignment and management reports are produced using a Report Generator Language designed for linear programming data files. The development of this system is an example of a user application of a system package."

Mineral Resources estimation plays a crucial role in the profitability of the future of mining operations. The conventional geostatistical methods used for grade estimation require expertise, understanding and knowledge of the spatial statistics, resource modelling, geology, mining engineering as well as clean validated data to build accurate block models. However, the geostatistical models are sensitive to changes in data and would have to be rebuilt on newly acquired data with different characteristics, which has proved to be a time-consuming process. Machine learning methods have in recent years been proposed as an alternative to the geostatistical methods to alleviate the problems these might suffer from in Mineral Resource estimation. In this paper, a systematic literature review of machine learning methods used in Mineral Resource estimation is presented. This has been conducted on such studies published during the period 1990 to 2019. The types, performances, and capabilities, of several machine learning methods have been evaluated and compared against each other, and against the conventional geostatistical methods. The results, based on 31 research studies, show that the machine learningbased methods have outperformed the conventional grade estimation modelling methods. The review also shows there is active research on applying machine learning to grade estimation from exploration through to exploitation. Further improvements can be expected if advanced machine learning techniques are to be used.

Lack of visibility makes it difficult for continuous miner (CM) operators to judge the desired sump depth. The resulting inaccuracies have proven to lead to significant production losses. This problem of measuring the depth of sump has been addressed in the past and a few measurement techniques have evolved. Despite various attempts, a suitable commercial depth of sump sensor does not yet exist. A system using the Doppler effect has been patented, developed and successfully tested. The method is non-intrusive and involves a beam of microwaves being projected obliquely at the roof. The received signal is analysed with respect to the transmitted signal, yielding the desired measure of displacement. Surface tests have revealed an accuracy of a few centimetres. Underground simulation tests on a load haulage dump (LHD) machine have verified the repeatability under the harsh conditions of interest. The system is presently being installed on a CM where it is to undergo a long-term performance evaluation. This paper presents the theory behind such a system, the hardware developed, the signal processing requirements and an analysis of the test results.

We report on further progress in improving seismic locations by using the so-called double-difference method (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 and Waldhauser et al., 1999). Double-differences are obtained either using picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. The double-difference method provides for much improved relative locations by reducing the effect of the errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each geophone. Further improvements are obtained by using known locations, such as blasts. One of the difficult problems that we have overcome is that of finding the best “weights” for the time corrections. Experience obtained in relative moment tensor inversions by Andersen (2001) suggests that use of median corrections is both more stable and more accurate, even while the locations of the individual events is based on weighted least-squares minimization. A hybrid location program with known reference events has been developed. Tests on a synthetic data set gave relative locations that were much less widely spread than the absolute locations. The use of known event coordinates (blasts) moved the relative locations back towards the real locations. These results are confirmed in preliminary analysis of data from a mine. The absolute locations are adjusted using blast events restricted to the line of tunnel development. Inter-event distances are distributed in a power-law fashion that suggests that the relative location accuracies are improved by a factor of three or more. Nous rendons compte des progrès faits dans l’amélioration des locations de séismes en utilisant la méthode appelée de double- différence (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 et Waldhauser et al., 1999). On obtient les double-différences soit en utilisant des temps d’arrivée choisis soit des mesures variées de différences de temps obtenues de doublets de forme d’onde. La méthode de double-différence fournit des locations relatives très améliorées en réduisant l’effet des erreurs dans la vitesse d’onde des trajectoires de rayon entre chaque évènement et chaque géophone. D’autres améliorations sont obtenues en utilisant des locations connues, telles que les coups de mine. Un des problèmes difficiles que nous avons surmontés est celui de trouver les meilleurs coefficients de pondération pour les corrections de temps. L’expérience obtenue dans des inversions de phases tensorielles relatives par Andersen (2001) suggère que l’utilisation de corrections médianes est à la fois plus stable et plus exacte, même lorsque la location des évènements individuels est basée sur minimisation pondérée de moindres carrés. Nous avons développé un programme hybride de location avec des évènements connus pour référence. Des tests sur des données artificielles ont donné des locations relatives qui étaient beaucoup moins étendues que les locations absolues. L’utilisation de coordonnées d’évènements connus (coups de mine) a ramené les locations relatives vers les locations réelles. L’analyse préliminaire des données d’une mine a confirmé ces résultats. Les locations absolues sont ajustées en utilisant des évènements de coup de mine restreints à la ligne du développement du tunnel. Les distances entre chaque évènement sont distribuées comme par loi exponentielle ce qui suggère que les degrés d’exactitude des locations relatives sont améliorés par un facteur de trois ou plus. Wir berichten über einen weiteren Fortschritt, die seismische Positionen unter Verwendung der zu sogenannten Doppel-Unterschied-Methode (Spottiswoode und Milev, 1998 und Waldhauser et al.,1999) zu verbessern. Doppel-Unterschiede werden entweder mit ausgewählten Ankunftszeiten oder verschiedenen Messungen von Zeitunterschieden erreicht, die von den Wellenformpaaren erhalten werden. Die Doppel-Unterschied-Methode liefert viel verbesserte relative Positionen unter Verringerung der Auswirkung von Fehlern in der Wellengeschwindigkeit von Strahlengängen zwischen jedem Fall und jedem Geophon. Weitere Verbesserungen werden erreicht, indem man bekannte Positionen, wie Sprengungen verwendet. Eines der schwierigen Probleme, die wir überwunden haben, ist jenes des Findens der besten "Gewichte" für die Zeitkorrekturen. Die Erfahrung, die in den relativen Momentspannerumkehrungen von Andersen (2001) gewonnen werden bietet den Schluß an, daß der Gebrauch von mittleren Korrekturen beständiger und genauer ist, sogar wenn die Positionen der einzelnen Fälle auf der bewerteten Reduzierung der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate basiert. The primary focus of management today is safety, or preventing negative, generally irreversible, events of acute duration. The outcomes of safety-related events are usually visible and can evoke strong emotions if the results are severe. Experts now see that occupational illness and disease also result in significant emotional and financial toll to workers, their families and communities, and to their employers. Effective health and safety management must include acknowledging the importance of occupational health hazards and the proportionate application of resources to address those issues. Improvement in workplace conditions and decrease or elimination of illness and disability are due to actions within the workplace and result from the implementation of risk prevention and control measures. However, success may only be visible months or years later and may require interventions that have to be maintained over prolonged periods. This demands continuous, co-ordinated effort to ensure sustainability of diverse occupational health programmes and the relevant management systems. Too often occupational health is not seen as being part of the general management of business, but rather the function of a medical practitioner somewhere off site in a clinic. Integration of occupational health management systems with other management systems within an organization is essential for its success.

ABSTRACT Durability tests and evaluation of sub-zero temperature effects to some argillaceous clastic rocks were carried out. Welded tuff, limestone, sandstone and schist samples collected from different parts of Japan were tested and results are presented. Schist and dolomite from Ganesh Himal area along the higher Himalayas of Nepal were also tested, and the results are compared. The slaking tests were performed on all samples in pure water. The results reveal that the slaking index of schist from Japan is lower than that of schist from Nepal. Regarding carbonate rocks, the slaking index of limestone from Japan is higher than that of dolomite from Nepal. A tendency of decrease in slake durability with an increase in porosity is also observed. Freezing and thawing experiments conducted on welded tuff and schist reveal that crack initiates earlier but extends slower in schist than in welded tuff. It is also observed from the freeze-thaw experiment that the welded tuff deteriorates and wears faster than the schist. However, sandstone remains relatively intact for a long run of freeze-thaw cycles. Zusammenfassung Beständigkeitstests sowie die Bewertung der Auswirkungen von Minusgraden auf Tonschiefer Trümmergestein wurden durchgeführt. Dabei wurden geschweißter Tuff, Kalkstein, Sandstein und Schiefer aus verschiedenen Gebieten Japans sowie Schiefer und Dolomitgestein aus dem Ganesh Himal Gebiet, dem höheren Himalaya Nepals, untersucht und die Resultate verglichen. Für alle diese Gesteine wurden Slaking-Tests in reinem Wasser vorgenommen. Die Resultate zeigen, dass das Slaking von Schiefer aus Japan höher als das von Schiefer aus Nepal war, wohingegen bei kalkhaltigem Gestein das Slaking von Kalkstein aus Japan niedriger als das von Dolomitgestein aus Nepal ausfiel. Es wurde dabei auch eine Tendenz zur Löschbeständigkeitsverringerung bei gleichzeitig erhöhter Porosität beobachtet. Gefrier- und Tautests an geschweißtem Tuff und japanischem Schiefer zeigten, dass Risse in Schiefer schneller auftraten, aber sich langsamer ausweiteten als in geschweißtem Tuff. Bei Gefrier- und Tautests wurde ebenfalls beobachtet, dass geschweißter Tuff schneller verfällt und verschleißt als Schiefer. Sandstein hingegen blieb über lange Tau- und Gefrierzyklen intakt Résumé Des tests de solidités et l’évaluation de l’effet des températures en dessous de zéro sur les rocs argileux ont été effectués. Les rocs d’origine volcanique (cendre), les rocs calcaires, sableux et les schistes de différentes régions du Japon, ont été étudiés. Les schistes et les dolomites de la région de Ganesh Himal le long du haut Himalaya (Népal) ont été étudiés et comparés à ceux du Japon. Les tests de désintégration sur les rocs ont été effectués dans l’eau pure. Les résultats montrent que l’index de désintégration des schistes du Japon est inférieur aux schistes du Népal. En ce qui concerne les rocs carbonyles, l’index de désintégration des rocs calcaires du Japon est supérieur à ceux des dolomites du Népal. Une décroissance de la résistance à la durabilité est observée avec une plus grande porosité des rocs. Les tests de congélation-décongelation sur les schistes et les rocs d’origine volcanique (cendre) du Japon montrent une apparition précoce des fissures mais l’expansion des fissures est plus rapide dans les rocs volcaniques. Des tests similaires montrent que les rocs volcaniques (cendre) se désagrégent plus rapidement que les schistes. Richter magnitudes for seismic events were calibrated for use as a Local magnitude scale in the West Rand (WR), Far West Rand (FWR), and Klerksdorp–Orkney–Stilfontein–Hartebeesfontein (KOSH) gold mining areas. Richter magnitudes are currently calculated from seismograms recorded by local surface cluster networks using tabulated calibration values for Southern California, published in 1958. The Richter (1958) model is incorrect for distances of less than 30 km and should be applied only to crustal earthquakes in regions with similar attenuation properties to those of Southern California. When compared to the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), the cluster networks, on average, overestimate seismic event magnitudes by approximately 0.1 of a magnitude unit. A calibrated Local magnitude scale was derived by means of a multiple regression analysis between the Local magnitudes reported by the SANSN and the largest zero-to-peak trace amplitudes measured on the cluster network horizontal seismograms, after modelling the attenuation of the seismic waves as these progress from the epicentre to the station position. Magnitudes reported by individual stations for the same event show a significant scatter around the average magnitude owing to the near-surface amplifications of the seismic waves at the recordings sites. Average magnitude should be estimated using as many magnitudes of individual stations as possible to ensure an accurate estimate. Larger event magnitudes should be compared with those recorded by the SANSN.

In 2015, after amendments to the explosives regulations, stemming became a mandatory activity for all South African mining operations. There are, however, circumstances in which it is thought stemming has an adverse impact on the blasting outcome. Some of these circumstances include blasting in hot holes, in reactive ground, or when blasting a pre-split. In order to determine when stemming is necessary, its role in the control of adverse blasting phenomena and impact on explosive performance were reviewed. Stemming was found to play a significant role in the fragmentation process and burden movement. Additionally, stemming significantly influences the control of flyrock, air-blast, and toxic fume generation. The review of the literature indicates some motivation for not using stemming for presplit, trim, hot hole, and reactive ground blasting, provided the benefits associated with not stemming the holes outweigh the risks of stemming them. Best practice for stemming from the literature indicates a stemming length of 0.7 × burden is best for larger hole diameters, and 20 to 30 × Ø for smaller hole diameters. Crushed aggregate appears to be the most effective stemming material. The South African explosives regulations pertaining to stemming were found to be consistent with those of Australia and the USA.

Float-and-sink analysis is widely used in the coal industry to obtain washability data, yielding important information about beneficiation potential and performance. This method is associated with health and environmental problems, and research into alternative densimetric methods is important. The RhoVol is a new technology developed by De Beers Group Technology South Africa (DebTech) for the image-based generation of densimetric data from ores. The analysis is done on a per-particle basis, within a size range of +3 mm –8 mm. In this paper we compare the established methods used for the float-and-sink analysis of coal with a new method using RhoVol. The aim of the study was to determine the validity of the information obtained from the RhoVol analyser by performing comparative densimetric analysis on three different coal samples. The results showed that the RhoVol method was more rapid, safe, and precise, but tended to consistently underestimate the density of the coal sample, probably due to varying coal porosity.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted a School on 'The Practical Design of Comminution Processes' at Megawatt Park (near Johannesburg) on 14th to 16th May, 1991 Derek Barratt, a Senior Consultant of Wright Engineers, Canada, and the main speaker, provided a good insight into how Wright Engineers design milling circuits, particularly large semi-autogenous mills. He was ably assisted by Jens Lichterof Allis Mineral Systems, who described some interesting examples of pilot-plant testwork and summarized South African milling practice. Mike Moys of the Witwatersrand University spoke on the influence of pulp viscosity on mill performance, and Johan Engelbrecht and Jeremy Bosman of Multotech

This paper describes the educational philosophy behind the development and summarises other salient features of the Program. The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. M J Martinson (Fellow) There is everywhere a lamentable dearth of quantitative information on occupational factors affecting the health and safety of mineworkers, and as the authors point out in their introduction underground lighting is one of the factors which has received little attention in South Africa prior to this welcome paper. Since the authors are to some extent pioneering, it is perhaps inevitable that the paper should raise more questions than it answers, but nevertheless it provides a provisional yardstick against which the need for, and success of, remedial action may be judged. Before commenting in detail on a few aspects of the paper it may be worthwhile to summarize the statutory provisions relating to underground lighting, contained in Chapter 15 of the Regulations promulgated in terms of the Mines and Works Act 27 of 1956. Chapter 15 is entitled `Lighting, Safety Lamps and Contraband', but in the context of the present paper only four simple regulations need be noted: firstly, no person shall work or travel in an unilluminated part of a mine unless he carries a light ; secondly, adequate stationary lights shall be provided at stations and certain other localities in shafts, winzes and places used for winding; thirdly, mechanically propelled conveyances shall be provided with an effective bright light shining in the direction of travel; and fourthly, moving machinery to which personnel have access shall be illuminated so as to be clearly visible. In all four regulations the standard of lighting to be provided is wholly subjective, and under these circumstances the wide inter- and intra-mine variations in light intensity disclosed by the study are hardly unexpected. Nevertheless the data presented in the authors' Table I raise three points (1) Is there any evidence that the 19 mines visited during the survey are representative of the 45-50 large gold mines in South Africa, or that the shafts selected are representative of the respective mines? Mine managers would scarcely be human were they not to offer better lit working places for the survey; perhaps the use of a scaling factor (e.g. tonnes or transit mineworkers per shift, kilowatts, etc.) for each working place might have helped to put the figures in perspective. (2) Looking at two of the more numerous - and probably important - of the ten working places included in the survey, i.e. stations and tips, one is struck by the marked. skewness of both intensity distributions (with higher frequencies at the lower intensities) and the abrupt cut-off in both cases just short of pitch darkness. Thus, of the 45 meaned readings recorded at 26 tips no less than 19 fall in the lowest range of 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2, with but one tip in total darkness; of 46 readings on 26 stations, 7 fall in the lowest range and none is in total dark-'1 ness. Although a light with an intensity in the range 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2 may satisfy the regulations, it is certainly arguable that in some situations it may be safer to have no light at all. (3) In view of the skewness referred to above, one wonders how meaningful are the `total average light intensities for (the gold mining) industry' quoted in Table I, which the authors compare with illumina¬tion levels found in other countries. Looking at tips again, one notes that 34 out of 45 meaned intensity readings fall below the `total average' for tips, and only 10 exceed it. From this it may be concluded that a few well-lit working places included in a `total average' may conceal a plethora in Stygian gloom. In their discussion the authors make fleeting reference to the effect of underground lighting on productivity and accident rates, without however quoting any South African experience in this regard. Intuitively it seems highly likely that better lighting (in the widest sense) would improve productivity and reduce accidents, and of course it is in these areas that the mining industry might seek economic justification for providing better lighting. It is all the more regrettable therefore that these factors were not studied simultaneously with the present investigation, especially at the Psychological Division of the Human Sciences Laboratory has recently published a study on underground accidents in the gold mining industry without making any reference whatsoever to lighting as a causal factor. In the event neither of the two studies enables us to make an economic appreciation of the situation, and this seems to be a classic example of a situation where some dovetailing of research effort would have greatly increased the useful return. On the effect of lighting on accidents, it may be noted that in 1939 Mickel presented some very interesting statistics to the Mine Managers Association of the Transvaal2, on the improvement in accident rates which followed the random issue of electric cap lamps to native mineworkers in the Hercules Section of E.R.P.M. the previous year. Based on a 12 month trial period in which 250 000 shifts were worked with carbide lamps and (contemporaneously) 307 000 shifts with cap lamps, the incidence of major accidents (at least one day in hospital among men using carbide lamps was 1,15 accidents per 1000 shifts, while the incidence of minor accidents (requiring dressing only) was 11,52 per 1 000 shifts. The corresponding figures for men using cap lamps were 0,79 and 7,31 accidents per 1 000 shifts respectively, representing a reduction of over 30 per cent in both major and minor accidents. While these figures are obviously dated - only men using cap lamps were issued with hard hats, for instance - they do indicate a need for similar research today.

Discussions on reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (RPEEE) include the CRIRSCO 2019 reporting template, JORC 2012, SAMREC 2016, CIM 2019 Guideline, and Regulation SK-1300. These reporting codes all conform to the principles of reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction. To demonstrate that all mineral resources align with the RPEEE principles, the Competent Person is responsible for endorsing the mineral resource estimate. Moreover, establishing mineral resources and RPEEE requires technical input from numerous technical specialists, such as mining and geotechnical engineers, metallurgical engineers, social and environmental specialists, financial and governmental practitioners, and more. The aim is to improve the transparency of the disclosure of mineral resources and guarantee the investor or potential investor that the reporting of mineral resources is based on reliable technical, economic, environmental, social, and other relevant factors. This paper discusses the important protocols and definitions in some international reporting codes for the purposes of developing a guide memoire that will assist the Competent Person to interpret, establish and apply RPEEE appropriately and easily.

Productivity is improved by increasing the ratio of output to input. In an operating open-pit mine, improving the productivity of heavy mining equipment (HME) enables the unit cost of production to be reduced. To optimize HME productivity, the Kolomela open-pit iron ore mine transitioned to an enhanced short-term mine planning (STMP) process that supports the application of a manufacturing-type operating model. At the core of the enhanced STMP process is a focus on integration across the open-pit mining value chain. The interdependencies between mining activities are highlighted and emphasized, thus ensuring that mining activities are synchronized. The improvements related to HME productivity were monitored from 2019 to 2020. The utilization of mining area in the Leeuwfontein pit improved from 71% to 90%, and the blasting frequency reduced by 14% while the average blast size increased by 17%. The distance travelled during shovel relocations between mining phases reduced by 16%, and the lost time associated with drills relocating reduced by 53%. These productivity improvements resulted in an 11% increase in the loading rate of the main waste shovel at Kolomela from 0.9 Mt/month in 2019 to 1.0 Mt/month in 2020. The enhanced STMP process can be adapted to other open-pit mining operations.
