Limited geographically by size and geo-logically by origin, smaller countries and territories of the Caribbean are nonetheless engaging in efforts to encourage the initiation of mineral and mineral-related industries. Petroleum dominates the minerals sector, which otherwise consists principally of minor quantities of construction-oriented materials, usually for local consumption. The increased cost of petroleum has adversely affected most of the world, but these islands with their economies precariously balanced on the uncertainties of agriculture and tourism are especially vulnerable to petroleum's direct and indirect costs. In 1975, the Government of Antigua acquired the financially troubled West Indies Oil Company refinery at St. Johns. The refinery ceased operations in 1976. In 1979, negotiations were underway to sell Ashland Oil Co. an interest in the small, 20,000-barrel-per-day refinery for $6.6 million. In 1977, Antigua granted petroleum exploration rights to the Antigua Mineral Exploration Company, which planned to drill in an undefined offshore area, possibly between Antigua and Barbuda. The company expected to spend about $200,000 per year through 1982. There have been no reports on its activity.

This report describes the development of new electroplating baths from which tin-nickel alloy plate was deposited. Although tin-nickel plate can be deposited from an aqueous ammonium bifluoride bath, the corrosive nature of this bath has served as a deterrent to its use. The Bureau of Mines felt that more general acceptance of this new alloy plate would follow if neutral or alkaline baths could be developed. Promising results were obtained from electrolytes containing both tin and nickel chlorides dissolved in triethanolamine-hydrochloric acid or in ethylene glycol hydrochloric acid baths. Current efficiencies close to 100 percent were obtained with these baths. Research revealed that tin-nickel plate could be produced from organic solvents or from mixed aqueous-organic electrolytes. The composition of the alloy deposit - 65 percent tin and 35 percent nickel - was found to exhibit the same single-phase structure that is obtained from the commercially accepted fluoride-type bath.

Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state. Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick's law. The free gas occurs in the fracture system and flows according to Darcy's law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. Conventional methods of reservoir engineering analysis are not applicable to coalbeds

Of the 19 major mine fire events (including thermal events) that have occurred in the last 6 years (2000-2005), it is estimated that remotely constructed mine seals could have been used at 65% of the events to control or suppress the fire. Underground observations of seals that have been remotely installed during mine fire events show that they often do not fully achieve mine roof-to-floor and rib-to-rib closure. Unfortunately, the inability to reliably close the mine void has limited or precluded the regular use of this technology. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is conducting full-scale underground experiments at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine to identify and remedy existing remote sealing technology shortcomings, to develop novel technologies, and to transfer the new or improved technologies to the mining industry. This paper will discuss the remote mine seal testing program and will provide the results of the in-mine experiments. As part of its effort to reduce the environmental impact associated with mining and metallurgical operations, the Bureau of Mines used a modified form of the Environmental Protection Agency's Extraction Procedure toxicity test on copper reverberatory slags that contained low, medium, and high levels of the impurity elements As, Pb, Sb, Bi, and Zn. All tests resulted in extracts that did not exceed those limits published in the May 19, 1980, Federal Register; there-fore, these solid wastes were designated as nonhazardous for most landfill disposal situations. However, arsenic and lead levels disturbingly close to the allowable limits--and even higher levels of copper and zinc, for which there are no established limits--leached from the high-impurity-element granulated slags. These slags should be handled in such a way so as to minimize the possibility of water contamination. One baghouse dust was tested according to the EPA procedure and found to exceed the extract limits by a factor of 10. This solid waste may be considered hazardous.

A kinetic investigation of copper cementation in a revolving drum was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to explore the effects of a porous copper deposit attached to the iron surface and a fluidized slurry of copper particles surrounding the iron precipitant. The rate of cementation was found to be significantly enhanced by the increased cathodic areas provided by a porous copper deposit or the presence of a fluidized bed of copper particles contacting the iron precipitant. The cementation rate was found to be retarded by increased ionic strength, low pH, and the presence of oxygen. The cementation reaction was first order with respect to precipitant surface area. Copper cementation on iron is visualized to occur by two basic mechanisms. Precipitation may occur through a series of shorted electrochemical cells, whereby cupric ion precipitates on a growing cathodic copper deposit, or, deposition may occur via a fluidized cathode of copper particles contacting the ion precipitant.

This report discusses the fundamentals of light and its interrelationship with the visual process. The purpose of the report is to insure an understanding of the numerous complex and interrelated factors that must be considered to design and implement a mine lighting system that will satisfy human needs for good vision and comfort. Topics include history, objectives, and technical considerations of coal mine lighting; light physics; light and vision relationships; and disability and discomfort glare.

Recognizing the dynamic nature and possible range of toxic concentrations in the impending fume cloud prior to undertaking explosive blasting can reduce potential hazards and mitigate related incidents. The scaled cloud model was formulated to predict the relevant (major) toxic components in fume clouds released by nonideal mining explosives used for surface blasting. Natural turbulence unceasingly disperses the toxic molecules, widening (inflating) the fume cloud while diluting the concentrations, ultimately rendering nonhazardous conditions. The threshold cloud size depends upon the type and quantity of total explosives used and the cloud's thermodynamic condition. Though the scaled theory works for fume clouds with irregular (odd) shape, an equivalent upright cylindrical form is useful for rendering simple riskhazard scenarios. The cylinder's projection downward on the underlying terrain yields a circular 'shadow' marking the region threatened, thereby permitting a rough estimation of the potential hazards, were the cloud to settle down there. Wind causes the cloud to drift while it expands, so the shadow travels while it grows, until the risk hazard process is truncated at the nonhazardous threshold. The overall relative fume toxicity (RFT) is taken from the traditional Russian RFT rule, which utilizes only the two fume components that tend to dominate the resultant toxicity: carbon monoxide (CO) and total nitrogen oxides (NOx). Tabulated constants that characterize the fume spectrum in the cloud model were resolved for ammonium nitrate (94%) with fuel oil (6%), ANFO-94/6, using a refined thermodynamic work-principle. Comparable results were found with the reduction factor technique, when test results from the underground fume chamber were readjusted to reflect nominal field shooting conditions.

Pillar recovery has been associated with nearly one third of roof fall fatalities in underground coal mines during the past decade. Safe pillar recovery requires global stability and local stability. Global stability is addressed primarily through pillar design. The local stability risk factors include cut sequence, the final pillar stump, supplemental supports (timbers vs. Mobile Roof Supports (MRS)), roof bolting, and many others. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated each of these factors through field research and analysis of accident statistics. The paper discusses design methods and technologies that have been transferred to the mining community and implemented.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines study was a laboratory-scale evaluation of the sodium sulfate refining process for removing copper from molten ferrous scrap. Maximum copper removal is achieved in carbon-saturated melts at 1,300° C. Low carbon concentrations and higher temperatures result in a less efficient copper removal and an increased sulfur concentration in the iron. Sodium sulfate refining significantly lowers the concentration of aluminum, manganese, and silicon; however, the copper removal efficiency is adversely affected by the presence of manganese and silicon. Compared with other reagents tested, sodium sulfide-forming slags were found to be the most suitable for both copper removal and sulfur control. The sulfur content of the refined iron was higher in tests conducted in acid-type refractory crucibles. Earlier studies showed that tin, a significant metallurgical impurity, is not removed by the sulfate process. During the present investigation, results showed that chlorination, using organic solid sources of chlorine, reduced the tin concentration to acceptable levels in molten iron.

A two-dimensional plane strain analysis by the stiffness matrix method was used to analyze two basic pit slope configurations. The magnitudes and the directions of stresses are given for a V-shape and for a flat-bottom pit with the slope angle varying from 30° to 90° at 10° intervals, Stress effects due to irregular pit configuration or to in-situ forces are discussed. Equations of similitude for gravity loading are given. Expressions are also given for the stresses at the toe as a function of slope angle. Procedures are given for finding the stresses in any geometrically similar pit slope of different dimensions and material properties from the stresses and equations presented in this report. Numerical results show that the V-shape pit slopes have lower stresses than the flat-bottom pit slopes; hence, they are inferred to be more stable.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThis paper is one of a series recently undertaken by the Mining Branch, Bureau of Mines, College Park, Md., to describe current practice in hauling ore and waste by truck at various mines.Heavy-duty ore trucks are replacing railroads at many large open-cut mines and even at a few underground mines. Recently a few mines have been equipped with trucks for transporting ore to a central point, from which conveyor belts move the ore out of the mine. This paper deals only with truck haulage methods and costs.The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers.A correct balance must be maintained between the primary crusher capacity, the number of shovels loading ore, and the number of trucks hauling ore.The cost of tires is important. Tire companies are manufacturing better tires. Mining companies are prolonging the life of tires by building better roads and maintaining correct tire pressure.The trend is toward heavier equipment. In 1949 it cost $0.0925 a long ton to haul ore and waste with a 15-ton truck and $0.0743 a long ton with a 22-ton truck.When trucks are properly maintained, hauling costs do not increase with the age of the trucks. During 1948 it cost $0.1118 per long ton to haul with the four oldest 15-ton trucks and $0.1130 per long ton to haul with the four newest 15-ton trucks, two of which were purchased in 1945 and two in 1947.The weighted ayerage cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and waste to the dump has been reduced from $0.1159 in 1948 to $0.087 in 1949."

The development of systems for location of miners who have become entrapped following a mine disaster has been one of the major research goals in the Bureau of Mines. This study details the preliminary development of such a system. Current technologies for locating trapped miners from the surface are either simple direction, finders or time difference pulse systems that have accuracy Limitations. Developing technologies using full vector field measurements at several receiving points are currently being studied. The necessity of measuring field strength with great accuracy can be a drawback in these systems. A system that operates with continuous wave radio signals, whose phase differences can be measured accurately even in weak signal conditions, greatly improves the location accuracy. A microcomputer would be used, in conjunction with the system, to gather and manipulate the data to automatically pinpoint the location of the trapped miner. Comparison of this system with existing technology indicates a favorable accuracy/complexity ratio for the phase difference of arrival technique.

Coalbed gas content measurements are commonly used in mine safety as well as coalbed methane resource assessment and recovery applications. Gas content determination techniques generally fall into two categories: (1) direct methods which actually measure the volume of gas released from a coal sample sealed into a desorption canister and (2) indirect methods based on empirical correlations, or laboratory derived sorption isotherm gas storage capacity data. Direct gas content determination techniques may be further. subdivided into quick-crushing and extended desorption methods. The quick-crushing methods are primarily used in mine safety applications outside the United States, but have also been used for resource recovery applications. Quick-crushing methods rely on crushing the coal sample soon after collection to release all the desorbable gas, thus significantly shortening the amount of time required for desorption measurements. However, some data useful for resource recovery applications are lost. Extended desorption techniques are most commonly used for resource assessment and recovery applications where information on desorption rates is useful for reservoir modeling, and for fundamental coalbed methane research. Extended desorption methods allow the gases in the coal sample to desorb under controlled laboratory conditions until a defined low desorption rate cutoff point is reached. The sample may then be crushed to measure the amount of gas remaining within the sample. Direct method techniques for gas content measurement are the focus of this paper.

THE South Asian countries of India, Ceylon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim have a large variety of mineral resources; however, in spite of mineral industry growth during 1964, development of resources remained far short of possible development, and, in terms of value of trade in minerals, the area remained a sizeable net importer. India's mineral industry is by far the most significant; its minerals production in 1964 accounted for more than 90 per cent of the total value of all minerals produced in the area. The total value of all minerals produced in South Asia in 1964 was only about 1 percent of the area's estimated gross national product of $55,125 million. Despite the rather small current contribution of minerals to the economy, development of mineral resources figures prominently in plans for the industrial development of the nations of this area.

As part of the pre- and post - shot mine examination at Project GNOME , acceleration data were recorded underground from a series of chemical explosive shots . The cube root of the charge weight was used to scale acceleration and distance because charge weight was not constant . Regression analysis of particle acceleration - distance data gave the following propagation equation : A W1 /3 = 5.10 x 105 ( R / W¹ / 3 ) −2 .43 The quantity A W1 /3 is scaled particle acceleration expressed in g's - lbs¹ / 3 , and R/W1 /3 is scaled distance expressed in ft / lbs¹ /3 Data obtained from the nuclear explosion were scaled and fall within one standard deviation of the calculated propagation law for the smaller shots . Cube root scaling laws were adequate to group acceleration data from explosive charges varying by a factor of more than 1 x 10 in charge weight and over shot - to - gage distances varying from 100 to 46,000 feet . Data obtained from a series of small tests provided sufficient data from which reliable predictions of acceleration could be made for the large nuclear explosion .

Massive roof overlying the working seam in longwall operations can cause hazards if it does not cave readily behind the face supports. The overhang thus formed can overload the supports and endanger personnel when it collapses suddenly as a large rock mass. This Bureau of Mines report proposes the use of a concentrated load, either strip or point loading, applied onto the roof with the help of the upward thrust of the face supports. An experiment was conducted in the laboratory to obtain information about break characteristics and the values of significant parameters of three sedimentary rocks. The results were used to determine the breaking load requirement for a strong roof possibly encountered in typical longwall operations. The results show that the roof slab of moderate thickness can be fractured within the load capacity of off-the-shelf powered supports.

"In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 20 and 25 outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible.In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 20 and condition 2 on page 25. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES TESTED UNDER SCHEDULE 17CAn active list of permissible explosives was published in October 1938 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3421, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. This list included 191 brand names.Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1939, placed 56 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Fifty-seven permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The brand names of four explosives were rescinded curing the year. The present list contains 18G brand names. Gypsum plaster is calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaS04-1/2H2O). There are two varieties, commonly designated as a and ß. The hydration setting) of this plaster involves the chemical reaction: CaS04?1/2H20(c) + 3/2H20(l) = CaSO4?2H20(c); that is, the hemihydrate combines with water to form the dihydrate. Many substances, when present as impurities, either in the hemihydrate or the water have influenced the rate of the hydration reaction. The objective of the Bureau of Mines work described in this report was to investigate the accelerating or retarding effects of small amounts of dissolved substances and to attempt to classify these effects upon a chemical basis. To eliminate competing effects, the work was conducted separately on the two varieties of hemihydrate; both were in highly pure form. (Commercial plasters usually are a mixture of the hemihydrates, with other substances present as impurities.) As the hydration reaction of each variety of hemihydrate evolves heat in amounts known from previous work, 5,6/ the authors decided to use calorimetric methods to follow the extent of the hydration reaction as a function of time. Two calorimetric methods were employed. One was designed to study the hydration reaction with a large water to plaster ratio and the other with a small water to plaster ratio (to simulate commercial practice in utilizing plaster).
