The U.S. Department of Energy Pittsburgh Research Center,1 has developed and field tested a spatial, spectral sensor for measuring the thickness of mineral deposits. Knowledge of the dielectric constant of the material is not necessary because the electrical properties of the media are determined automatically along with the thickness or distance measurement. The technology was developed to measure the thickness of coal remaining in the roof and floor of a mine or the thickness of a coal pillar remaining between two mining entries for the purpose of guiding a mining machine. However, field tests have shown the new technique is equally valuable for measuring the thickness of each layer in a multilayer manmade structure such as highway paving or building foundations and the thickness of geological deposits other than coal, such as, salt, granite and sandstone. The noncontacting electromagnetic technique uses spatial modulation created by moving a simple dipole sensor antenna in a direction along each axes to be measured while the complex reflection coefficient is measured at multiple frequencies over a two-to-one bandwidth. The antenna motion imparts spatial modulation to the data and enables frequency domain signal processing to solve the problem of media, target and antenna dispersion. The technique overcomes the problem of multipath reflections from nearby metal structures and avoids the use of radio frequency absorbing material. In its present form the system measures material thickness of zero to over 3 m to within ±2.5 cm accuracy. The system parameters are variable to suit the application but for most applications default values of 40 cm antenna motion with measurements made at 401 frequencies from 0.6 to 1.4 GHz at each of 32 antenna positions with a power level of 0 dBm or less are more than adequate to provide a satisfactory signal-to noise ratio. In the range of 0 to 10 m the system operates in the continuous wave mode and by simply turning off the transmitter for ranges beyond 10 m the problems of time domain processing are entirely avoided. The technique can be implemented with a vector network analyzer, a servo controlled L-band antenna positioner, an IEEE488 bus controller and a process computer. An electronics package designed and constructed to operate in the harsh mining environment and providing 1, 2 or 3 dimensional image presentation is being evaluated as a replacement for the network analyzer. The following are abstracts from papers presented at the 4th Symposium on Respirable Dust in the Mineral Industries and· were produced through research funding under the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust. Full articles appear in the proceedings published in July 1996 in Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. (Volume 11, Number 7). The two addresses included in the proceedings point to the progress, prospects, problems, and perspectives on control of respirable dust and dust-related disease in the mineral industries. The symposium papers deal with respirable dust issues that are longstanding such as characterization, health effects, control of airborne coal dust, new and emerging issues such as iron toxicity, diesel particulates, and sampling. The papers were grouped into the following topics: continuous dust monitoring, encompassing the development of a fixed-site monitor that will provide continuous information on instantaneous and time-weighted respirable dust concentrations; mechanisms involved in the generation of dusts in mine environments, important for dust control at the source; characterization and control of diesel emissions (particularly diesel particulates) in mine atmospheres; mining systems effects and models; dust control in mine working faces and in milling environments; characterization of the physical, chemical mineralogical, and biological properties of the dust and their relevance to health effects and sampling; dust-lung interactions, encompassing results from several biomedical studies dealing with acute and chronic inhalation of airborne dusts and associated lung responses; the role of iron in causing lung injury; and therapeutic strategies for ·the control of pulmonary disease. All papers submitted to the organizers were peer-reviewed. In the proceedings, we have not differentiated among the platform and poster papers; rather, they have been grouped into the above topical areas. Taken together, these papers reveal significant progress in the control of dust generation, characterization of dust, understanding of dust-lung interaction, and mining and milling practices to reduce dust exposure - all essential for reducing dust-related occupational hazards at the workplace.

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of seagoing vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in these classes are not wholly devoted to mineral commodity transport, as seen in tables 16 through 22. Bulk carriers move considerable tonnages of agricultural products as well as crude minerals, their concentrates, mineral fertilizers, and the like. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to non mineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral commodities and non mineral commodities. They include general cargo ships, full container ships, partial container ships, roll-on/roll-off ships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Table 16 shows the distribution of the world's merchant fleet by vessel type in terms of the number of vessels, their gross tonnage, and their deadweight tonnage. The increase of nearly 1.5 % in the number of vessels between 1990 and 1991 compared with a 2.7% growth in gross tonnage and a nearly 2.3 % increase in deadweight tonnage points to an increase in the average size of vessels. Of the four categories of vessels reported, all showed increases in number and in deadweight tonnage between 1990 and 1991 except for "other," and on the gross tonnage basis, all groups registered increases. Although physical characteristics of vessels such as size, draft, crew requirements, type of propulsion system, ratio of gross tonnage to cargo tonnage, and fuel costs have undeniable influences on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and types of materials moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy, and thus have a bearing on the minerals sector of that aggregate. Unfortunately, comprehensive global data reflecting changes in these critical variables are not published.

"The presence of respirable quartz-bearing mineral par-ticles has been well documented in many coal mines, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration regulations address the quartz content of mine dusts. Unfortunately, the correlation between the quantity of respirable quartz-bearing mineral particles and the pathogenicity of the dust is not strong. Work is currently underway by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/U.S. Bureau of Mines and work is being included in the Respirable Dust Center Program by Dr. Seehra to determine the surface availability of quartz in mixed composition mine dusts. However, this paper propose a possible source of surface quartz or a spe¬cial region in the coal that may contribute to the pathogenicity of selected particles in the respirable dust.Assumed in this model is the hypothesis that either the cleat surface is coated with quartz or some cytotoxic sub-stance that in the body is capable of destroying macrophage and thus inducing a fibrotic response (1) that during the frag¬mentation a reasonable proportion of the respirable size coal particles contain some of the original cleat surface and that these particles have the same order of in vivo cytotoxicity as do the quartz particles. It may be that these cleat surfaced respirable size particles are only contributory to the overall pathogenicity of the coal dust, nevertheless, there are enough of these particles to to considered as a potential source of the cytotoxic dust particles.This paper demonstrates that if the cleat surfaces are mineralized with quartz or have a pathogenic coating, then in many mines there will be enough respirable coal dust particles containing some cleat surface to cause a fibrotic reaction. To understand why some of the dust particles contain as part of their surface some of the cleat surface, consider what happens when a beer bottle is broken. While there are a large number of beer bottle fragments, many of the fragments, particularly the larger fragment sizes, will have as a fraction of their surface part of the original beer bottle surface. The model and mathematics of this problem have been worked out by Meloy.(2-4)In the homogeneous IAC model, (2-5) a fragment or par-ticle resulting from comminution is equally likely to occur anywhere in the material being broken. Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the most widely distributed and most frequent causes of industrial accidents . Carbon monoxide gas is a product of incomplete combustion , and since it is without color , odor , or taste , its presence is frequently unsuspected in many places where it exists . It is an ever present danger about blast and coke furnaces , smelters , and foundries . It may be found in buildings having a leaky furnace or chimney , and in buildings where a gas stove is used without a proper flue connection , such as is often found in tenements , tailor shops , and boarding houses . Hospitals receive annually a great number of victims of poisoning , either by accident or in an attempt at suicide , from artificial illuminating gas . People may be affected by leaks wherever water gas is formed or used . The exhaust gases from gasoline motors under average running conditions usually contain 5 to 7 per cent carbon monoxide , and sometimes as much as 13 per cent ; deaths from running an automobile engine in a closed garage are not infrequent . A similar danger may arise in operating gasoline engines in launches without sufficient ventilation . The gas is formed also in stoker rooms , in gun turrets on battleships , in petroleum refineries , and by the Lablanc soda process in cement and brick plants . In underground mines carbon monoxide may appear as the result of shot firing , mine explosions , or mine fires , and in tunnels where automobiles , coal or oil - burning locomotives are operated . In spite of the common occurrence of carbon monoxide poisoning there appears to be no uniformly recognized treatment for a person overcome by carbon monoxide . In the rescue work of the United States Bureau of Mines , however , a method has been developed which has been supported by laboratory investigation , and has proved successful in practical experience , over a period of years . As outlined in this article , the method is useful in the hands of first -aid men as well as physicians .

This study presents a historic overview of the role of mobile roof support (MRS) technologies in improving stability and worker safety and presents the results of recent field evaluations of the MRS load rate monitoring device and other remote deformation-monitoring techniques. Field studies were implemented at two sites in cooperation among researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Maleki Technologies, Inc., and J. H. Fletcher & Co. The objective of the field programs were to (1) study the interaction between MRS’s and coal mine strata and (2) develop and test suitable monitoring systems for assessing roof and pillar stability. An MRS consists of a roof canopy, four hydraulic cylinders, a caving shield canopy, and associated electromechanical systems mounted on crawler tracks. The machines are controlled by radio from a remote location and operate on self-contained power units. Typically, MRS’s have capacities of 5,340 and 7,120 kN (600 and800 tons). In comparison to posts, an MRS is capable of maintaining the yield load after significant amounts of roof-floor deformation. Because the mining cycle is accelerated, MRS’s help reduce the potential for time-dependent roof falls. MRS performance has been monitored in the laboratory under controlled static loading conditions and in the field under deep, two-seam mining conditions. Laboratory studies have quantified support capacity and system stiffness as a function of machine height. Field investigations have focused on determination of optimum operating conditions and development of warning systems that indicate excessive load on the machine and/or impending roof-pillar stability problems. Analyses of field data show that roof instabilities are influenced by (1) pillar failure, (2) pillar yielding, (3) mine seismicity, (4)geologic structures, and (5) panel layout designs and mining practice.Pillar yielding and failure (unloading) and seismicity can be conveniently monitored by the load rate monitoring device, but for consistent detection of roof falls, additional deformation measurements directly within the cuts are needed.

Toxic fumes produced by detonating explosives in surface mining and construction operations pose potential hazards to workers and the public. Blasting operations produce both toxic and nontoxic gaseous products; the toxic products are mainly carbon monoxide (CO) and the oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Since 1988, there have been 17 documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through ground strata into occupied enclosed spaces as a result of proximate trench blasting or surface mine blasting. These incidents resulted in 39 suspected or medically verified carbon monoxide poisonings as well as one fatality. At worst people may be fatally poisoned and the least to be expected is increased public objections to blasting. Local and state agencies could demand a cessation of the blasting requiring more expensive mechanical means to break the rock. This paper discusses the most feasible means of preventing CO migration, mitigating CO that has migrated, and detecting CO in an underground enclosed space and may help reduce the exposure of unsuspecting area residents to carbon monoxide and help prevent the implementation of unnecessary regulations and limitations on blasting. Single-hole shots and small-scale multiple-hole blasts were performed that indicate promising means of prevention and mitigation.

Study Design. A split-plot experimental design was used to evaluate the influence of posture, trunk angle, and rotational velocity on peak torque output and myoelectric activity during maximal trunk extension maneuvers. Objectives. To determine whether the kneeling posture alters extension torque capabilities in isometric and isokinetic exercises as compared with standing. Also, to ascertain whether recruitment of trunk muscles is modified by such a postural change. Summary of Background Data. Factors such as workplace geometry may force workers to adopt awkward or unusual postures in the performance of manual tasks. An understanding of the limitations placed on strength in unconventional working postures is crucial to the proper design of jobs. Methods. Twenty-one healthy male subjects (mean age = 36 years 7 SD) performed 12 trunk extension exertions in standing and kneeling postures. Isometric tests were performed at 22.5°. 45°, and 67.5° of trunk flexion. isokinetic tests were done at three velocities: 30°/sec, 60°/sec, and 90°/sec. Electromyographic data were collected from eight trunk muscles to assess muscle recruitment under each condition. A prior; orthogonal contrasts were specified for analysis of both torque and electromyographic data. Results. The kneeling posture was associated with a 15% decrease in peak torque output when contrasted with standing; however, no concomitant change in trunk muscle activity was evident. Trunk hyperflexion (isometric tests) and increasing rotational velocity (isokinetic tests) were associated with reduced torque in both postures. Trunk muscle activity was primarily affected by changes in trunk angle and velocity of contraction. Conclusions. A reduced extensor capability exists in the kneeling posture, despite equivalent trunk muscle activity. The similar activation patterns in both postures suggest that the strength deficit does not result from alterations in trunk muscle function. Rather, it may be the consequence of a reduced capability to rotate the pelvis in the kneeling posture, due to a disruption of the biornechanical linkage of the leg structures. 1. Potential groundwater pollution resulting from large-scale surface mining in western states should be evaluated. 2. Criteria should be developed for the design, construction, operation, and abandonment of sediment ponds for maximum removal of suspended solids. 3. Methods should be developed for reducing suspended solids discharges from surface mines to less than 30 milligrams per liter. 4. A manual should be developed in the form of guidelines for sediment and erosion control planning and implementation. These guidelines must be designed to cover all phases of the coal surface mining operation (i.e., before, during and after mining). 5. A mine road manual should be developed for use by surface mine operators and State and Federal Agencies. Erosion, water control, and dust control should be covered in detail. 6. The block-cut, head-of-hollow fill, and mountain-top removal methods and techniques of contour mining should be evaluated, designed, and ultimately demonstrated in steep, mountainous terrain. Designs should be prepared for single and multiple seam applications. The demonstrations must show that these mining systems will secure rapid achievement of reclamation require¬ments and provide maximum, safe, economic coal recovery in an environmentally safe manner. 7. A Blasting Manual should be developed for use by industry and enforcement agencies. Stress should be placed on how to keep vibration levels and air blast pressures well below accepted safe criteria. Also, methods that can be used to control noise should be listed. 8. Investigations should be conducted on the effect of continued vibrations from blasting on structures that are near quarries. 9. Additional guidelines need to be developed for sampling and analysis of overburden material and associated coals for trace elements and noxious strata. Samples are extremely sensitive, and the source and manner of their collection, handling, storage, and treatment, as well as the techniques of analysis, need to be developed and described. This information can be used to predict possible future problems.

"Inhaled dust particles of appropriate size contact cells of the alveolar region.' The acute response to coal dust appears to involve a variety of cell types, including alveolar epithelial cells, interstitial fibroblasts, both resident and recruited macrophages, and cells of the immune system. Direct and indirect effects of dust, which may be mediated by soluble factors,'' can initiate acute and long-term lung injury. While it appears that epithelial cell growth and differentiation, along with integrity of the epithelial basement membrane, may play a role in the long-term response to dust exposure, little is known of the role the alveolar epithelium may play in the progression of injury. The broad hypothesis that underlies these experiments is that short- and long-term consequences of coal dust exposure involve changes in structure and function of the alveolar epithelium and the underlying extracellular matrix. Recent studies show that coal dusts exert direct effects to modify pulmonary epithelial cell-extracellular matrix interactions in vitro.3EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURESType II cells isolated on day 0 by density centrifugation and differential attachment4 were plated overnight in D MEM containing 10% fetal calf serum before exposure to anthracite dust PSOC 867 sonicated into culture medium (750 ug/mL).3 Synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins was determined on day 3 of primary culture, as detailed elsewhere. 5 Cells were removed from extracellular matrix by extraction with NH4OH and high salt. Extracellular matrix synthesis and fibronectin content were evaluated based on radiolabeling with 3 H-leucine and on Western blot analysis, respectively. Additional analytical methods and calculations are detailed elsewhere.3-5"

This circular presents the method of making tests and apparent results of comparing performance of tungsten carbide insert bits and steel detachable bits by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the company's mines on the Marquette iron range of Michigan. The mines are at Ishpeming and Negaunee, Mich., and include the Cliffs Chaft, Mather "A", Cambria-Jackson, and Mather "B". There are four general characteristic types of high-grade iron ore on the Marquette range. B. H. Boyum2/ classifies the Cliffs Shaft as "hard-ore" and the Cambria-Jackson and Mather "A" as "soft-ore" types of deposit. Shaft sinking through Jasper, slate, and graywacke was in progress at this writing at the Mather "B", with completion at 3,100-foot depth in August 1949. The many different kinds of rock and ore at the mines of the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. and the experimental work being carried on with carbide in- sert bits make it possible to compare, generally, the carbide insert and steel detachable bit. The type of "hard ore" at the Cliffs Shaft mine re- quired close study of the possible use of the insert tit, and their records are more complete than those of the "soft-ore" mines. History and development of tungsten carbide tips inserted in rock drill bits have been covered by R. W. Adamson, C. H. Vivian, R. C. Sullivan,5/ and others. Tungsten carbide insert rock bits have only recently been introduced to the domestic mining industry. Although unusual performance records are being reported at operations employing the insert bits, the general adaptability of the tool to all rock types and the advantages to be gained by using carbide insert tits remains to be demonstrated. Insert-bit performance is being observed at numerous mines and quarries throughout the United States The several mining operations at the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., is one site where exhaustive comparative tests of insert and conventional steel detachable bits are currently in progress. The Vest nickel prospect, in Floyd County, Va., was discovered about 25 years ago. Limited exploration of the deposit had indicated some appreciable nickel mineralization in the sulfide ore. The property was examined on March 9, 1943, by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in company with C. W. Vest, owner of the property. A limited exploration program was recommended. Two holes totaling 320 feet were diamond-drilled in January 1944. Drilling indicated the sulfides are sparsely disseminated. The only nickel values of interest were at the old prospect shaft.

The story of helium is one of the romances of science . Probably nothing , except perhaps radium , compares with it in human interest . Helium is one of the best examples of a discovery in pure science that has wide commercial application . In 1868 , an eclipse of the sun was visible in India , several scientific men who were in India making observations of the eclipse turned a spectroscope for the first time on the solar chromosphere - that part of the atmosphere of the sun , about 10,000 miles deep , which merges into the corona . A bright yellow line was observed and was thought at first to be due to sodium . Janssen showed , however , that this line was not just the same as either the D or D₂ line of sodium, although it was extremely close to these lines , hence he suggested that the new line have the designation D₂ . Frankland and Lockyer decided that Dz was due to an element in the sun not previously discovered on the earth , and suggested for it the name "Helium" from the Greek work " Helios " the sun . For several years nothing more was done in connection with this element . In 1894 , Sir William Ransay , in conjunction with Lord Rayleigh , made his memorable discovery of argon in the atmosphere , which was announced at the British Association meeting in the same year . After this discovery , Ramsay looked for other sources of the element . Through Sir Henry Miers , he learned that Dr. W. F. Hillebrand , of the United States Geological Survey , had obtained an inert gas from certain uranium minerals , which gas he had decided was nitrogen . Ramsay believed that part of it might be argon ; he obtained from Hillebrand for experimentation , a sample of the mineral , cleveite , one of the uranium minerals , and after extracting gas from the mineral and purifying it , he ran it into a spectrum tube . The lines obtained ' were , however , different from those of argon; among them was the bright yellow line noted by Janssen . Thus was terrestrial heliun discovered .

Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. "INTRODUCTION The behavior of particulate systems in general is determined by the properties of the solid and fluid phases and of the interfaces between them. As particle size is reduced, the inter facial effects become increasingly important until, in colloidal systems, they become completely dominant. Interfacial phenomena are especially important in coal processing for a variety of reasons. Because coal is naturally hydrophobic and its density is low, surface forces begin to dominate over gravity at relatively coarse sizes. Coal is thermodynamically unstable in the presence of air, so that surface oxidation occurs readily leading to important variations in surface properties with time and environment. These effects are further compounded by the inherent heterogeneity of the material.Surface characteristics and properties play a significant role in most aspects of coal processing. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface, while agglomeration involves the reduction of surface area and is usually controlled by surface forces. Both solid-solid and solid-liquid separations are influenced by interracial phenomena, Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and are affected by the wetting characteristics of the various solids present and by the need to ensure proper dispersion of the individual particles. Froth notation, of course, separates particles on the basis of differences in surface characteristics. Chemical processes such as leaching generally involve interfacial reactions whose rates depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. Solid-liquid separations and associated processes such as flocculation are strongly dependent on the nature and properties of the solid-liquid interface.In characterizing solid surfaces, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface may depend on the distribution of different petrographic constituents and impurities such as finely disseminated mineral matter, on the extent of surface oxidation, and on adsorption from the environment. These, in turn, will generally determine the surface properties which define particle behavior. Since the relationships between structure etc. , and properties are not generally known, it is usually necessary to measure properties such as wettability and electrical charge directly."

Growing concern from labor unions, regulatory agencies, and industry about the safety of a prevalent underground coal mining method which utilizes remote control has prompted human factors field evaluation of mining activities. Remote control operations were implemented with little consideration given to human-system interactions. Ideally, collecting and analyzing information prior to implementing new technology would have helped to address potential problems. One such problem that operators and other mine personnel are faced with is the question of where they should safely position themselves to avoid injury while remotely operating machinery. To determine work methods employed by machine operators before and after implementation of the new method, work sampling techniques have been used to provide data about positioning of face crew members at different points in the mining cycle. This data provides information for optimal positioning, leading to safer operating procedures and identifying training shortfalls.

A NEW record was set for helium shipment in 1962 for the 13th successive year. For the first time since 1949, the production of helium from natural gas at Bureau of Mines plants was less than in the previous year. The Bureau shipped 599.5 million cubic feet, 9 percent more than the 1961 volume, and produced 680.9 million cubic feet-a decrease of 6 percent from the record set in 1961. The Bureau added 77.2 million cubic feet to the volume stored for future use. Of the total 524.6 million cubic feet in storage, 522.4 million cubic feet is accumulated excess production from Bureau of Mines plants. The remaining 2.2 million cubic feet was purchased during 1962 from industry under the helium conservation program. The first two of five private plants began production in December to recover helium for conservation storage and ultimate use. A 425-mile pipeline system to transport helium from the five private plants to the Cliffside field was constructed by the Bureau at a cost of about $8 million.

"A remarkable explosion of fire-damp caused by a discharge of lightning at the new shaft at the Sitalpur coal mine, has been reported by the Chief Inspector of Mines of India, who gave the following details:""The explosion occurred during a thunderstorm, and the evidence showed that a flash of lightning had, to all appearances, passed down the shaft caus¬ing disruptive discharges at certain points between the guides and the winding rope, rending the latter at two places situated respectively .228 .feet and 278 feet from the surface, The distance between the winding rope and the side of the shaft was 5 feet 4 inches, indicating a spark gap ;of this width, and an intensity of discharge which could not fail to ignite the explosive mixture of gas and air known to be present in the shaft.""The Compressed Air Magazine, January 1920 issue, which contained the above extract also goes on to state;""In 1915, M, Ferey described in a paper read before the Societe de l'Industrie Minerale phenomena of a similar character to the above. In a pit liable to sudden outbursts of gas, for the sake of safety, shot firing was carried out from the surface. During a storm, in the year 1905, shots went off in two places after the detonators had been connected to the conductors) we read in the Colliery Guardian, London. These shots were situated respectively 1,400 and 1,410 metres from the firing station, Realizing the possible danger from this cause, the precaution was taken to cut the conductors at the bottom of the shaft and to connect there just before firing, Even under these conditions a shot went off spontaneously, -.owing, it is believed, to lightning."""

"The occurrence of Coal Worker's Pneumoconiosis (CWP) ·has been potentially linked with several characteristics of coal such as rank, volatility, percent content of ash and non-coal components, quartz content, and the presence of several trace elements. According to the National Research Council, numerous epidemiological Studies: indicate that the incidence of CWP varies significantly with the composition and/or the concentration of the coal mine dust.Although advances in dust suppression techniques have markedly reduced respirable dust levels in underground coal mines, the National Research Council has concluded that chemical characteristics of respirable dust from different coal seams should be studied. With this objective in mind, research has been conducted in underground coal mines located in the eastern and mid-western United States, and in the laboratory to characterize the elemental composition of mining-generated airborne dust and laboratory-generated dust derived from samples taken from these mines. The goal of the research is to determine if a relationship exists between mining-generated and laboratory-generated dust from the ·same mine. Results of this research will be presented. ,"
