The topography of the Jamestown fluorspar area is rough and ranges from 6,400 to 8,000 feet in altitude. Some fluorspar was mined as early as 1870, but mining really did not begin in earnest until 1940, and up to July 1947 it is estimated that 272,500 tons of fluorite was mined and milled. In 1947 the General Chemical Co. was mining fluorite and milling it in a 200-ton-a-day mill at Valmont, 7 miles east of Boulder, and the Ozark-Mahoning Co. was milling ore in a 100-ton-a-day mill at Jamestown, using ore mined, by H. M. Williamson & Son. These fluorite deposits comprise veins in a granite country rock. The Bureau of Mines drilled eight holes, aggregating 2,579.1 feet, on the Blue Jay vein; four holes, aggregating 1,434 feet, on the Chancellor; and one 350-foot hole on the Nations Treasure. Fluorite of a minable grade and width was found in 10 of the holes drilled. In this report the location and accessibility, physical, features and climate are described and a brief history of the district is given. The deposits and character of the ore and sampling and analyses are described, mine workings are outlined, and work performed by the Bureau of Mines is summarized. Diamond drill logs are shown in appendix I, and 'Sample analyses are tabulated in appendix II.

"Introduction In the course of the investigations by the Bureau of Mines into the various causes of coal-mine explosions, the fact that several gas explosions had occurred during or very soon after a mine was being un-watered, attracted the attention of the Bureau's engineers. The apparent coincidence was so marked that there appears to be an extra hazard present, whenever water, which has been standing against the face of the coal for some time, is suddenly removed either by natural drainage or by mechanical means.Actual Occurrences Case 1. - A typical illustration of this hazard is shown in a gas explosion which occurred in a mine in Central Pennsylvania. Four main entries, 50 feet apart with an average grade of 6 per cent, had been driven with the dip of the coal, and from these mains 7 pairs of entries, at intervals of 800 feet, had been turned at such an angle that their grade was slightly rising. Prom these latter pairs of entries, rooms were turned practically at right angles.The main entries had been driven for 4,500 feet and at the face there was 400 feet of cover. As far as could be observed, the roof was of sandstone and the floor of clay.The coal bed being mined was the Lower Kittanning, which has a thickness of about 4 feet. "The sulphidizing filming of minerals in oxide ores as a preliminary treatment to aid their recovery by flotation is known practice. In this work the use of barium polysulphide does not appear to have been considered. A study of the properties of barium lead to the following comparative investigation of the sulphides and polysulphides of the alkaline and alkaline-earth metals. It is thought that barium polysulphide may prove to be a more satisfactory sulphidizing reagent than others now in use under conditions that favor the cheaper barium reagent.For the investigation two fairly typical oxidized ores of copper and lead were selected. The copper ore came from the Big Indian Mine in southeastern Utah, and assayed 3.8% Cu; the copper was present in a sandstone gangue mainly as the carbonates, malachite and azurite, with less than 0.2% as sulphides, or silicate. The lead ore is from the Tintic Standard mine in the Tintic district, Utah. It is typical of the oxidized lead-silver ores of that district; the lead is present in an oxidised form in a siliceous gangue, much: Uncolored by ferric oxide. The sample assayed 5.15% Pb and 11.3 oz. Ag.In addition to the results obtained in this investigation, there are included some results secured by Mr. J. B. Lain, consulting metallurgist of Reno, Nevada, on a sample of ore from the Chino Copper Co. The ore assayed about 1.7% Cu, of which about 0.25% was nonsuiphide."

Design a new acoustic monitoring system to more accurately forecast impending rock bursts, and to assist in understanding the rock burst phenomenon. Background Rock bursts arc the major cause of injuries and deaths in deep underground mines in the Silver District near Wallace, ID. Bureau investigations of the rock burst phenomenon resulted in significant improvements in computerized acoustic technology, and achieved limited success in forecasting several large events. Research demonstrated that the location of rock noise, and the rate at which these events occur, are indicators of areas that could fail violently. In minewide monitoring, the typical array of acoustic sensors (geophones) is arranged to cover an entire mine with 16 to 32 separate instruments. The mines intended to be covered may be 7,000 feet in depth and up to several miles in extent. While such an arrangement is capable of detecting and locating large seismic events (rock slippage along natural fractures or faults), the geophones are too far apart to accurately locate mining-induced events at the active workplaces. The Bureau devised a strategy to concentrate the geophones into typical slopes (mining areas about 200 by 500 feet) to record the rock noise in areas where the miners work. By using such a dense geophone array at a mine, the Bureau provided event location and rate information to mine operators who removed workers and ceased production from active mine areas that subsequently suffered rock bursts.

"INTRODUCTION Among the hazards that may attend the use of Diesel engines in mines, tunnels, or other underground operations the presence of harmful or objectionable constituents in the exhaust gas must receive due consideration to prevent the formation of unsafe or unhealthful working environments in these places. Previous reports of this series have presented discussions of the composition of exhaust gas from engines in proper mechanical condition, 6/ the effect of adding some of the exhaust gas to the intake air of the engine, 7/ the effect of operation in atmospheres containing natural gas, 8/ and the effect on exhaust-gas composition of conditions that influence the characteristics of fuel injection in Diesel engines. In all these studies the properties of the fuels used were in general conformity with specifications usually recommended by the manufacturers of Diesel engines. In evaluating the physiological significance of the various components of the exhaust in these experiments, the toxic or objectionable gases determined were carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and aldehydes. Because of the low sulfur content of' these fuels, compounds such as sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide were not determined, although in discussion of the test results attention was directed to the fact that if fuels of higher sulfur content were used, the concentration of such compounds in the exhaust would become a significant factor in establishing the quantity of ventilating air required to furnish satisfactory dilut1on of the exhaust gas in underground working places."

In August 1943 the Bureau of Mines completed seven churn-drill holes in an area of old mine workings near Linden, Wis., formerly known as the Argall mine. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation by the Bureau of the zinc and lead producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when special effort was being made to increase the production of metals necessary for war. The area was selected for investigation on the basis of its favorable geologic structure, past history, and apparent mineralization.

The systems contributing to the cost analysis, and the flow of data input and output related to these systems, are brought into focus in Figure 6. The various sub-systems of the Master Design Simulator provide the raw operating data basic to the cost model which, operating independently, accumulates the raw input, assigns costs to this data by standard or modified costing procedures, manipulates the costs into standard formats and outputs the data for managerial evaluation. Cost Modeling Direct costing methods are not complex in the sense that elemen¬tary arithmetic is employed using the same basic relations for each cost category. The basic cost model relations described above are illustrated in Figure 7. The greatest difficulty encountered in the transition from a dy¬namic systems simulation model to a costing model is the time frame of the input and output data. Dynamic simulation models utilize a small time increment, on the order of seconds or fractions of seconds, to analyze system operations and interactions. On the other hand, for cost computation and reporting, the smallest relevant time unit is the shift, with reporting periods expanding to days, weeks, months, and years. Complications arise in the accumulation of data for the various report periods due to the use of the Gregorian calendar by modern so¬ciety. The potential for simulation for the life of the mine, possibly in excess of 50 years, increases the complexity of the costing process

1, Introduction This report is submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of USBM Contract No. J0255017, "Development of Emergency Escape Systems Guidelines for Underground Metal and Nonmetal Mines" Under this contract the history of past mine fires was studied. Representative metal and nonmetal mines were surveyed and escapeways, refuge chambers, life support, and emergency hoist requirements were studied to determine the problems in complying with the proposed regulatory standards and their enforcement by MESA Mine Inspectors. In addition, a computer program was written to evaluate mine evacuation performance. The completed program is included in the appendix. 1. 1 Historical Review of Metal and Nonmetal Mine Fires Early records of mine fires are poorly documented because there was no statutory provision for reporting fires to the Bureau of Mines. The survey of representative mines during the course of this contract indicated that many small fires still go unreported even though they are now required to report all fires A recent report survey approximately 80 disasters in metal and nonmetal mines, (6 ) Table I is a summary of some of these fires. Historically most metal and nonmetal mine fires have been caused by electrical problems. Spontaneous combustion and the use of welding equipment are the other major causes of mine fires(14) Although not documented, many mine personnel agree that 30 percent to 40 percent of underground metal and nonmetal mine fires have their origin from cigarettes and other smoking related materials. The number of fires related to spontaneous combustion is decreasing and equipment fires are on the increase. The reduction of spontaneous combustion fires can be attributed to the use of sandfill in more mines and the increase in equipment fires to the increased use of LHD equipment.

Develop a more efficient method of testing the integrity of in-situ leach mining operations. The Problems For economic and environ-mental reasons, in-situ leaching operations must be sure that wells do not leak. Loss of solution in large quantities can be expensive in itself, and if such losses result in pollution the costs can be even higher. Wells are usually tested for leaks by sealing them with packers, pressurizing them and monitoring the pressure drop. However, many commercially-available packers are designed to be used in steel-cased wells rather than the fiberglass-or plastic-cased wells used for in-situ mining. These packers are heavy, cumbersome, expensive, and often leak. In addition, commonly used well-integrity-test systems require lengthy test periods and drill rigs or hoist trucks with rigid pipes must be used to run the packers in and out of the well. The Bureau of Mines has developed a mobile, self-contained leak-testing system that is faster, uses trailer-mounted equipment that can be operated by one person, and features a new inflatable packer.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out exploratory laboratoryscale studies to identify factors that may contribute to nitrogen oxides (NOx) production associated with non-ideal detonation of blasting agents. Explosive admixture with drill cuttings, loss of fuel oil in ammonium nitrate and fuel oil (ANFO) from wicking, ammonium nitrate dissolution with water, degree of explosive confinement, ANFO density, and critical diameter were identified as contributing factors to increased NOx production under the laboratory test conditions. Experiments were also conducted to examine the effectiveness of various additives in reducing the NOx production from ANFO, emulsion, and ANFO/emulsion blends. Aluminum powder, coal dust, urea, and excess fuel oil in ANFO formulations were tested and were found to reduce both the nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) production. Fumes measurements were obtained in the NIOSH underground closed chamber from the detonation of 4.5-kg (10 lbs) charges in schedule 80 seamless steel pipe and from detonations in light weight galvanized steel stove pipe. Some exploratory tests were also conducted with 0.8-kg (1.8 lbs) charges of pulverized ANFO initiated with 0.08-kg (0.18 lbs), 50/50 (Pentolite) boosters (in the NIOSH 12-ft (3.7-m) diameter steel sphere) to measure the degree of fumes production associated with post-detonation oxidation. Ammonium nitrate, emulsion and Pentolite boosters were also detonated in an oxygen-poor environment.

"INTRODOCTIONIn an earlier communication 1 from our laboratory it was reported that mechanical crushing of coal and quartz under normal air atmosphere generates of free radicals on the particle surfaces, and that these radicals decay with time, hence pointing to a higher toxicity of fresh dusts in relationship to pneumoconiosis and silicosis. More recently Fubini et al.2 have also reported the detection by electron spin resonance (ESR) of the formation of SiO. and Si-type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. In agreement with earlier ESR studies on single crystals of quartz crushed under high vacuum ( -10-10 torr>3 and subsequent exposure to air,3 and to other gases,4 these radicals were identified2 as being formed by the homolytic cleavage of the Si-0-Si bonds and the reactions of the Si• and SiO- radical with atmosphere. Fubini et al.2 also suggested that these radicals might be involved in the mechanism of the fibrotic action by silica, either by transforming the particle surface into a selective oxidating agent or as an initiator of a sequence of reactions leading to fibrosis. Earlier Gabor and Anca5 bad reported that lipid ·peroxidation caused by free radicals on the silica surface might be involved in the red blood cell membrane damage. Thus far, however, no parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 studies on a given quartz dust sample have been reported, except for some earlier work from our laboratory.1·6·7 We now present more recent results obtained from parallel cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and free radica1 measurements on a freshly made quartz dust. The dust's free radica1 content was measured using ESR spectroscopy while its cytotoxicity potential was estimated via hemolysis. Hemolysis was employed as the toxicity test because it is a widely used method for estimating the potential of a dust for disrupting the cell membrane. 8 The fibrotic potential was followed by measuring the dust-induced lipid peroxidation, using linoleic acid as a model lipid. As discussed below, the results obtained suggest new clues to the mechanism of the quartzrelated cytotoxicity and fibrogenicity. MATERIALS AND METHODSReagentsCrystalline quartz particles with a size range of 0.2-2.5 mm were obtained from the Generic Respirable Dust Technology Center, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania. These particles were crushed in air to obtain quartz dust samples with particle sizes smaller than 20 microns. We chose to work with a dust with mixed particle sizes, rather than a specific range, as an effort to simulate the mining atmosphere. An agate mortar-pestle arrangement was used for the crushing and grinding because of the close similarity of the structure of agate to that of quartz. Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DETAPAC) were purchased from Sigma. All other chemica1s were purchased from Fisher or Aldrich.Hemolysls ExperimentsHemolytic activity of silica was measured, following an established procedure,9 as the amount of hemoglobin released from a 2 % suspension of sheep erythrocytes after incubation with 10 mg of silica dust for one hour at 37 °C. The hemoglobin release was estimated via the absorbance at 540 nm using a Gioford spectrophotometer. The procedure was calibrated by substituting the silica dust by a phosphate buffer solution as a negative control (background) and O.S % Triton-X-100 as a positive control (100% hemolysis). A sample of oxidized copper ore from a large deposit located in Pinal County, Ariz., about 50 miles northeast of Tucson, was treated by the Federal Bureau of Mines in a small-scale continuous pilot plant by a procedure which comprised acid curing complemented by water leaching and countercurrent decantation washing in a series of drag classifiers. A feed was prepared by pugging minus 1/4-in, ore with concentrated sulfuric acid and about 10 pct, of eater, followed by curing in batches for about 24 hr. The cured ore was fed continuously to a leach drum, where it was mixed with advance solution from the countercurrent washing system to dissolve the sulfated copper. The pulp was thickened and washed in four Esperanza-type classifiers, using a flocculating agent to obtain rapid settling and thickening. The leached ore pulps thickened satisfactorily in the drag classifiers when about 0.8 lb. of a polyacrylamide flocculant per ton of dry feed was used. Clear overflow liquors were obtained, and classifier rake products containing about 60 pct. solids were produced, As much as 90 lb./hr. of ore was treated in the plant, with a recovery of 60 pct. of the total copper or 80 pct, of the acid-soluble copper when 2 tons of water per ton of feed was used in washing. The acid consumption was 4.3 lb./lb. of copper recovered. On the basis of the maximum feed rate employed and the effective pulp-settling area of the classifiers, a total of 1 sq. ft. of pool area was required per ton of dry feed per day for the thickening and washing operations. The washing efficiency in the test was 95 pct.

INTRODUCTION The pager phones used in many underground coal mines are battery- operated, party-line telephones with provisions for loudspeaker paging. The system is two-wire, non-polarized, and is operated by self-contained batteries. Many of the individual units are certified as permissible. Requirements for installation are specified in state and federal regulations, such as in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Mineral Resources, Part 75. The major federal regulations that affect communication in coal mines are noted below, with a brief description of the subject matter in each of the relevant paragraphs. Refer to the cited paragraphs of Title 30 for explicit details of these regulations. (This brief description is for reference purposes only.) Minimum Requirements (paragraphs 75.1600, 75.17 13-2, and 75.1003-1) Approved telephone or two-way communication will be provided between the surface and each main shaft landing and each working section ; to the nearest medical assistance; and shall be protected from contact with trolley wires or trolley feeder wires. Installation Requirements (paragraphs 75.5 16-2, 75.52 1, and 77.508-1 ) Communication wires will be supported on insulated hangers, attached to messenger cables, or buried, to protect against mechanical damage ; installed opposite trolley wires; and insulated near power conductors . . . each cable will have lightning arresters within 100 feet of going below ground . . . and arresters will be provided wherever telephone wires enter a building. Synopsis Underground stone mining Is an emerging sector of the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover, and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, effective stone pillar design methods will become even more Important. Current design practices are examined and a discussion of safe mine layouts is presented as a first approach towards weighing the demands for increased production against increased risk. Risks to underground stone-mine workers include rib Instabilities, pillar failures and roof falls. Seventy-two stone-mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail when subjected to excessive stress levels. When width to height ratios fall below 1.0 defects in the pillars, such as through-running discon¬tinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties and orientation are also important determining factors in pillar strength. During the past three years the number of active underground stone mines in the U.S.A. has ranged between 90 and 100. This number is expected to increase as the crushed stone industry responds to growing demands for its products.1 As more of the industry moves to benefit from the advantages of underground mining production from underground stone mines is expected to increase above its current level of approximately 66 000 000 r/year. Parker2 identified four advantages of underground mining operations: (1) surface developments, zoning laws and environmental concerns are often less of an issue; (2) stripping and restoration requirements are eliminated; (3) additional reserves are often available beneath the quarry floor, under pit slopes or under an adjoining property; and (4) space is created for secondary use. Underground mines enjoy the added benefits of work in a constant underground climate, rather than in the variable surface climate, minimization of community concerns by placement of the crushing, sizing and stowing operations underground and reduction of surface vibration concerns through smaller blasts. The drawbacks of underground mining include added health and safety hazards for the stone miners, whose health can suffer from increased exposure to falls of ground, airborne contaminants and fog in large underground openings. Injuries from falls of ground in stone mines have occasionally exceeded the incidence rates for other mineral resources mined underground. 3 Existing underground stone operations, by comparison with stone operations a decade ago, mine more stone at a faster rate and with larger equipment. Because of high demand mines face increased pressure to yield more stone per production blast. A majority of the miners use the V-cut blasting pattern, which limits the depth or pull for each shot to about 4 m. Therefore, to produce more stone, either the mines must work more faces or existing faces must be enlarged. The enlargement of underground openings poses problems in the maintenance o€ strata stability, First, the widths of the mine entries partially control the amount of sag or deflection that any given roof beam can withstand before failure. This deflection can take pi ace quickly after an opening is excavated or much later as weathering processes form additional, thinner beams. Because increased deflection increases the potential for roof beam failure, there is a limit to how wide a room can safely be made. These limits depend on local geological and stress conditions and, to some extent, the cost effectiveness of roof-bolting. Given these room width limitations, underground stone mines have placed more attention on expansion of production through benching where mining thicknesses permit. The heights of rooms partially control the strength characteristics of adjacent pillars: as the room height increases for a given pillar width the pillar width-to-height ratio (w/h) decreases. In general, stone pillars are very strong, but when the width-to height ratio diminishes the potential for pillar rib instabilities and pillar failures increases (see Fig. 1). [ ] In the underground environment the desire to utilize wider rooms, higher benches and multi-level mining results in the potential for unstable ground conditions. Although the number of failed pillars is currently very low, the potential for additional failures will grow if more slender pillars are developed, especially under deeper cover, with wider mining sections and in multi-level operations. "The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

The recent introduction of small coal jigs in Alabama to meet the needs of truck - mine operators for cheap and economical cleaning equipment marks another step in Alabama's pioneering record in the mechanical cleaning and preparation of coal . During the past 4 or 5 years a number of these small jigs , with capacity of 5 to 10 tons per hour , have been installed at Alabama truck mines and at a few truck mines in Illinois , Tennessee , and Pennsylvania . Most of the installations have been at mines that specialize in the production of domestic , stoker coal . This report describes three models of small jigs and includes performance data obtained recently on one of the models by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior , in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa , Ala . , for the purpose of comparing it with fullsize jigs on a performance basis . With literally hundreds of truck mines now in operation throughout the country , it has been assumed in preparing this report that there is widespread interest in the availability of small - scale inexpensive preparation equipment for use at such mines in the production of steam and domestic coal and in some instances coal for manufacture of coke . Practically none of the coal from Alabama truck mines is scld to coke - oven plants ; but in some sections of the country truck mines supply a considerable amount of coking coal, and the use of small, inexpensive washers at some of them might be very advantageous during the present war emergency from the standpoint of increasing pig - iron production through improvements in coke quality .

Trinitrotoluene is made by the direct nitration of toluene by a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids . The exact procedure varies , but the product , where Grade I of TNT is desired , is similar , and consists largely of material that has a melting and setting point of 80.6 °c . The purification consists of draining off the liquid portions , including the acid and liquid nitro compounds . The mass is crushed and washed until the TNT is acid - free . It may still have a low-melting point due to the presence of material of lower nitration. Other isomers also have the same effect . The crystal mass may be washed with a solution of sodium sulphite , thiosulphate , sulphuric acid , or with an organic solvent such as alcohol , benzene , or carbon tetrachloride , Where a very pure product is desired , the TNT is separated by fractional crystallization from solution in organic solvents . The TNT is If it forms In some cases the material is melted during purification . agitated as it cools to prevent solidification in a solid mass . in a solid mass , this is broken up and screened . There has been some question as to the effect of the different methods of purification on the strength and sensitiveness of TNT , although all methods left a product that would give satisfactory tests .
