The monoclinic to tetragonal inversion of zirconium dioxide was studied by single-crystal X-ray methods, high-temperature X-ray diffractometry, and differential thermal analysis. The unusual features of the inversion, such as no definite transition Lperature, hysteresis, and athermal kinetics, were confirmed for powders who mean crystallite size was greater than 1,000 A. Samples of mean crystallite size below 1,000 A displayed classical kinetics, obeying a logarithmic rate law. A detailed mechanism based on Ubbelohde's theory of continuous phase transformations was proposed which is consistent with all the experimental facts.

"INTRODUCTION The first ten papers of the series on smelting in the lead blast furnace described the operation at the custom smelter of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, Utah, and at the plant of the Bunker Hill Smelting Co., Kellogg, Idaho, which handled a very rich lead concentrate. These previous papers may be considered a picture of the traditional lead smelter treating custom ores and of the smelter that will treat the type of product likely to be made in the future - lead concentrates of an increasingly rich grade.The great plant at Trail is of special interest to those smelting lead products containing much zinc and faced with the necessity of transforming all of their byproducts into commodities which may be sold profitably. The plant is equipped to produce electrolytic zinc, lead, copper, silver, bismuth, and cadmium. Part of the sulphur evolved from treating the ores is converted into sulphuric acid. Complete fertilizers for agricultural purposes are also produced.The smelter of lead ores has long considered that zinc is one of the most difficult ingredients that he has to handle. Even with the gretat improvement in flotation practice today, the residues from electrolytic zinc plants leaching zinc concentrates must still be smelted for their lead content. Of the total gangue material not separated from the lead concentrate sent to the smelter, zinc is still one of the most notable in percentage. The most successful way of coordinating the over-all operations of a concentrator, an electrolytic zinc plant, and a smelter provided with a plant for re-treating the blast-furnace slag for its lead and zinc content must be of interest to many treating complex ores.ACKNOWLEDGMENTThe data in this paper were collected in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada, Limited, and its entire technical staff. In a factorial experiment, blasting caps were detonated in three sizes of shotholes in mortar with three types of stemming--dry sand, wet sand, and hydrostone. Free-surface displacement pulses were recorded with a capacitive-displacement gage at a distance of 15 inches. The effects of decoupling and the type of stemming on the amplitude and the duration of the displacement pulse were determined. Both the amplitude and the duration of the displacement pulse were significantly decreased by increasing the decoupling, but they were little affected by the type of stemming.

The airflow and methane distribution patterns developed in an equipment-free entry 6.5 feet high and 12 feet wide, ventilated by line brattice operated blowing to or exhausting from the face, were determined by the Bureau of Mines for varying conditions. Results of these studies show that blowing line brattice systems of face ventilation are more effective than comparable exhaust systems. The face ventilating efficiency of any line brattice system is dependent upon the method of ventilation, the face distance, the tight rib distance, the volume of air delivered to the end of the line brattice, and the volume of methane released at the face. Experimental results indicate that maximum face ventilation efficiency is achieved when the inby terminus of the line brattice is installed 5 feet from the face and at a distance less than one-third the entry width from the nearest rib. Analyses of data are based upon the ability of a face ventilation system to dilute methane in the immediate face area.

Increased awareness of a healthy work environment is common to all industries and the stone industry is no exception. The presence of operating diesel equipment, welding, stone production blasting, and silica dust in a working environment all contribute to air quality issues in underground stone mines. Particularly recognized is the exposure of workers to diesel particulate matter (DPM). Recent regulations call for a DPM standard of 160TC ug/m3 (TC = Total Carbon). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of these mines and consequently reduce the exposure of workers to harmful airborne contaminants. The results have shown that the ventilation of underground stone mines can be significantly enhanced using improved ventilation controls and techniques. Large-opening stone mines present specialized ventilation challenges because their entries are much larger than in other types of mines. Most stone mines have entries about 40 feet wide and up to 30 feet high, with bench areas that may extend even higher. These large entries present the positive opportunity to move large air quantities at relatively low mine fan pressures resulting in lower fan horsepower and reduced operating costs. However, the difficulty in ventilating large-opening mines is that even with large air volumes, the air velocity is often less than 100 feet/minute. Higher ventilation velocities more quickly dilute and remove contaminants from the face areas. Higher ventilation airflow velocities can be achieved by effective ventilation planning and proper choice of ventilation fans.

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

Steels with an alloying addition of depleted uranium were studied to develop successful melting , casting , and fabricating methods ; to obtain data on mechanical properties ; and to determine the effects of this alloying element . Uranium in amounts up to 1.5 percent was added to steel - base compositions containing approximately 0.5 percent carbon , 2 percent nickel , 0.25 to 2.0 percent silicon , and 0.75 percent manganese in both vacuum- melted and air -melted heats . Radiation levels were monitored for all operations . Bureau of Mines research at the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center showed that uranium additions did not increase tensile strength ; that hot - shortness occurred during forging above 1,090 ° C because of the presence of a low melting point constituent of a eutectic type ; and although a measurable amount of radioactive contamination resulted from processing , the quantity was never large enough to require the work area to be identified as a radiation area .

A novel method of extinguishing a mine fire in a stowed or gob-filled area by employing liquid carbon dioxide under high pressure eras used recently with success at the President (Prasident) coal mine, Bochum, Germany, as reported by P. Cabolet in Gluckauf (Apr. 24, 1937, p. 393) The use of carbon dioxide gas as a fire-fighting agent in surface plants and in ships is now general practice in the United. States, but when it has been tried for extinguishing fires in mines in large areas more or less confined by stoppings it has not been successful. Examples of the latter method of attempting to fight mine fires are given in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 229, Fifty-Nine Coal-Mine Fires; How They Were Fought and That They Teach, by G. S. Rice, J. VT. Paul, and 14. VT. von Bernewitz (1927). The reason for its nonsuccess may be either that the stoppings are not tight or that the roof and pillars are more or less fissured and enough air passes into the area to sustain a slow fire, whether of spontaneous origin or produced by gas explosion or other source of ignition.

In overview, the world's mineral industry in 1989 registered gains over its 1988 performance, but these gains were by no means as pronounced as had been those of 1988. The traditional statistical measures of mineral industry performance, namely production, trade, and consumption levels, reflected significant growth in most industry sectors from crude material extraction through the gamut of down- stream processing. Growth in market economy countries generally exceeded growth in the centrally planned economy countries as a result of a variety of causes that will be covered subsequently, but even among the centrally planned countries there were some upturns. In contrast to these measures of the soundness of the industry, the situation for nonfuel mineral and metal prices was less satisfactory than in 1988, and low crude oil prices continued as a problem for the all-important petroleum sector, despite some gains during the year. The oil price situation mitigated against price increases for competitive fuels. Although this was unfavorable for fuel producers, it remained advantageous to consumers, including nonfuel mineral producers, processors, and transporters. Thus it cannot be viewed as a negative factor for the whole of the global mineral industry. Global crude mineral output value was estimated at nearly $1,420 billion in current dollars, an increase of 9% over the 1988 level, and an increase in current dollar terms for the seventh consecutive year. Measured in terms of constant dollars, however, adjusting for inflation, the increase was only 4.7% compared with the 1988 level. Despite the prolonged growth trend, the 1989 crude mineral output value level was still 3.2% below the record high set in 1980, which was $1,467 billion in terms of 1989 dollars.

In the movement of self-controlled direct-current machinery, particularly shortwall cutting, machines, from one place to another in coal mires, "nipping" or it stinging" has been practiced quite commonly. These terms refer to the method of obtaining current for propelling or tramming the machines along trolley haulageways by sliding the trolley trip (hook or nip), which terminates one conductor of the trailing cable, along the trolley wire. This is usually done by the machine operator or runner while sitting on the machine truck and holding the nip terminal against the trolley wire as the machine travels along the rails. This procedure is objectionable for several reasons. Under the best conditions, the area of contact between the nip and trolley wire is snail end, consequently, sparking and flashing ore most likely to be continuous as the machine proceeds. This is undesirable, not only because of the detrimental effect of electric flashes upon eyesight, but because of the pitting and roughening the trolley wheels which decrease the efficiency of current collection by locomotive trolley wheels and shoes and at the same time shorten their useful life by increased wear.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates data on nitrogen-gas reservoirs and isolated occurrences of inert gases in several Williston basin oilfields. Recoverable reserves of nitrogen gas in the Minnelusa nitrogen interval within the areas of five oilfields on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota are estimated at about 1.27 trillion standard cubic feet, based on computer analyses of logs from over 300 wells. This volume of nitrogen represents a large source of high-pressure inert gas and warrants consideration of possible application in oil-production operations. Drill-stem tests made in two of the fields indicated that nitrogen can be produced at rates up to 28 million cubic feet per day.

Petrographic methods of examination were used by the Bureau of Mines on a suite of samples of ultramafic rock from Soapstone Ridge, Ga., located about 8 miles south-southeast of Atlanta. The samples were analyzed to determine (1) their potential for releasing regulatory particles upon crushing and grinding and (2) their concentration of fibrous particles that approach the dimensions of amphibole and serpentine asbestos minerals. Such particles might be generated during grading and excavation for housing and industrial development and could become a health concern. Light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were the techniques used to examine the samples. Six of the twelve samples contained amphibole as a major mineral; in five, it was a moderate to minor mineral. One sample contained no amphiboles, and serpentine was not observed or identified by X-ray diffraction in any of the samples. In nine of the samples, the amphiboles exhibited a habit that was either prismatic or acicular, but not asbestiform. Two of the samples did contain asbestos, occurring as small veins or fracture fillings, which represented only a minor percentage of the total sample. Similar petrographic screening is recommended for examining any rock deposit or mine location to delineate hazardous and nonhazardous mineral areas.

"INTRODUCTION The Segerstorm-Heizer property was examined by engineers 3/ of the Bureau of Mines in May and June 1942 and Mach 1943. As a result of these examination, the Nevada State Department of Highways,constructed 9.3 miles of graveled road under the mine access-road program. A magnetometer survey was made by the Geophysical Division 4/ in October 1943, and as a result the Mining Branch set up and conducted a core-drilling,project. Work on the deposit started May 24, 1944, and was suspended on July 31, 1944, but was resumed on December 4, 1944 and continued until completion on March 27, 1945.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as it, primary objective the more effective resource to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch Lowell B. This report discusses the nonfuel critical minerals position of the United States-both current and future (to the year 2000). We have assumed that there will be no major global disturbances-military, political, or economic-during the rest of this century. However, international relationships, strategies, and conditions that affect the supply of minerals are very tenuous, normal trading patterns can be easily upset, and national and ideological objectives can and do interfere with "normal" free market conditions. For example, the Department of Defense has reported that the Soviet Union is engaged in a strategy designed to reduce the availability of strategic minerals, through either physical disruption, market manipulation, or domination of producing or neighboring states. Although such a strategy poses serious concerns for the United States and the free world, the impacts of disruptions are not covered in this publication. Historical Perspective The modern industrial economy of the United States is founded on the production and use of minerals.* Two hundred years ago our forebears began taming a raw continent, developing a base for agriculture and a rudimentary minerals producing system. In the 19th century, with the aid of imported labor and capital, the development of America's vast natural resources was undertaken, and the transition from an agricultural to industrial society was underway. By the century's close, the United States had emerged as a great industrial power, partly through the development of such mineral resources as iron in Minnesota and coal in Pennsylvania.

THIS PAPER describing the quarrying, mining, and crushing of gypsum at the Blue Diamond mine, 11 miles from Arden, Nev., on the Union Pacific Railway, is one of a series on gypsum mining being prepared for and published by the Bureau of Mines. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE ACTION OF TETRANDRINE ON SILICOSISBecause of the persistent presence of silica dust in the lungs silicosis is a progressive and irreversible disease. At present, there is no proven effective therapy for silicosis. Limited choices of therapeutic intervention with corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive regimens 1,2 have been accepted for some forms of pulmonary fibrosis. These treatments are only minimally effective, and the results provide little understanding of the disease state due to the lack of correlation between drug activity and the mechanism of fibrosis. Thus, continuing effort must be made in the search for effective antifibrotic agents, which may be used to provide a sequential analysis of the fibrotic process and to open the door for further research and clinical development. Tetrandrine is one of hundreds of drugs screened for antifibrotic activity by Chinese scientists. It has been used in China as a treatment for silicosis in open clinical trials3 and in laboratory animals. The action of tetrandrine on pulmonary fibrosis has been attributed to its ability to inhibit particle stimulation of alveolar macrophages, a key cell type central to the fibrotic process, to release oxygen radicals and inflammatory cytokines. Alveolar macrophages (AM) residing on the alveolar wall, are the predominant phagocytic cells of the lungs responsible for pulmonary defense against inhaled microorganisms and other particles and thus play an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of the lungs. 7 Ample evidence suggests that cells of the monocyte-macrophage series play an important role in the immunopathogenesis of pulmonary fibrosis. When upregulated by silica, alveolar macrophages generate reactive oxygen metabolites8·9 which can damage lung parenchyma and release fibrogenic growth factors and cytokines, 10,11 such as interleukin 1 (IL-1), which can induce fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. The cytokine-mediated fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis .11 Previous studies by our group have shown that tetrandrine exhibits strong binding affinity to AM and inhibits particle-stimulated respiratory burst activity (oxygen consumption, superoxide anion release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion) in these cells. 13 In addition, studies by Kang et al. 14 have reported that tetrandrine inhibits silica-induced release of fibrogenic factors such as IL-1 which are capable of inducing fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis. Reist et al. 15 further suggested that the antifibrotic action of tetrandrine may be mediated in part by the direct effect of this drug on the ability of fibroblasts to respond to proliferative agents. These results indicate that the mechanism of silicosis involves activation of AM and fibroblasts by silica, resulting in abnormal collagen production due to miscommunications between the cell types. Tetrandrine may interrupt this process by direct interaction with the lung cells.

This report describes and presents results of a phase of a laboratory study conducted at the Morgantown Petroleum Research Laboratory, Federal Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va., to determine the response of shielded electrodes of different dimensions in thin, noninvaded beds and to stimulate interest in the use of focused-type logging devices in the Appalachian oilfields. A blotter model was used to obtain plots of the potential field in the vicinity of a model shielded electrode. Three plots are presented. The difference in curvature of equipotential lines and the variation in measured resistance values for different blotter-model conditions suggest that the shielded electrode will give resistivities higher than normal when measurements are taken in a thin conductive bed located between resistive beds, and resistivities lower than normal when measurements are taken in a thin resistive bed located between conductive beds.

This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metalnonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data.
