In the group of minerals used in making this study, the cyanite is associated with quartz, mica, and feldspar in the schist. The amount of quartz is variable, but it is always an abundant mineral. Both large and small crystals of quartz occur in irregular masses, rarely ever showing crystal outline. Mica Is of the clear and dark varieties, the larger crystals being dark as a rule, and the finer crystals of light color. The present mineralogical composition of the mina is rather variable, as most of the original biotite and muscovite have suffered alteration, and much secondary mica is present as a result of alteration of the original mica and other minerals present, especially the larger cyanite crystals. A large part of the mica now found in the ore is chlorite, with varying amounts of Jefferisite and others, especially sericite. These are in the form of aggregates, or felt-like intergrowths filling the spaces between the quartz, cyanite, and feldspar. The feldspar is plagioclase probably mostly albite. It is white, possesses good cleavage, and is one of the hard brittle minerals of the rock. It alters to kaolin, and sericite, and more or less of these alteration minerals are present within the feldspar crystals but not separated from them. The cyanite is of two varieties, distinguished by their colors as blue and white cyanite. The blue color varies in intensity, being a pronounced blue in some crystals and paler in shade in others. Some crystals have been seen which posses the blue color in one-half of their mass and are pure white or clear in the other half. The purity of the cyanite is probably not affected by the color, but it is difficult to detect the white cyanite in the ore by macroscopic examination, so that great care has to be exercised in the selection of the ore in the field. Of the above minerals, cyanite is the heaviest, having a specific gravity of 3.6; none of the others approach it in specific gravity. The usual as opiates of cyanite in the mica schists are garnet, magnetite, and tourmaline, but these have not been noted in the group of minerals treated, and their absence is a point of great value in favor of this ore, as they possess high specific gravities and interfere in separation processes, and if not separated they are detrimental because of their easily fusible character. Small amounts of apatite and titanite have been noted, but not enough to cause trouble.

The Bureau of Mines conducted ignition, flammability, and decomposition experiments on gas mixtures containing ethylene to determine its flammability characteristics at elevated pressures and ambient temperatures. Pure ethylene was found to propagate a decomposition reaction at 1,000 psig and ambient temperatures when ignited with 1 gram or more of guncotton in a 2-inch-id bomb. The decomposition products were primarily carbon, methane, and hydrogen.

"INTRODUCTION Aluminum and manganese bronzes as a group, may be separated readily from other copper-base alloys by experienced sorters. However, separation of aluminum bronze from manganese bronze is generally a matter of guesswork, so that accurate separation presents a difficult salvage problem.Attempts at separation by the thermoelectric tester. 3/ which had proved successful in solving other sorting problems, showed in this instance that the desired separation was uncertain because of the wide range of composition allowable in each kind of bronze. If only one composition of each kind of bronze were used in industry, separation by the thermoelectric method probably would be simple. However; the variability in composition observed in commercial alloys is so great that the thermoelectric power of the one type frequently overlaps the range of values found for the other. As a result, specimens frequently are classified in the' wrong group.Separation of the two types of bronzes on the basis of measurements of magnetic properties on filings from the various samples also proved unsuccessful because the test results overlapped to such an extent that no clear-cut division could be obtained.Electrode potential measurements were made also on the aluminum and manganese bronzes in the hope of distinguishing between them. A drop of saturated potassium chloride solution was placed on the fresh surface of the metal and the tip of a calomel electrode introduced therein. The voltage generated was measured by connecting the electrode and the bronze part to a research-type potentiometer. Although the voltages generated by the manganese bronze parts were greater than those generated by the aluminum parts, the difference in the closest two sets of readings was not sufficient to warrant a good separation. When a concentrated potassium alum solution was used instead of the potassium chloride solution, a wider divergence of voltage was produced by the various bronzes, but unfortunately readings overlapped in several instances."

[The Bureau of Mines initiated an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors in 1922, large- scale tests being conducted in its experimental nine near Bruceton, Pa., over a period of two years. A comprehensive report an this work is in course of preparation, but in order to place the practical results before the mining fraternity immediately and in condenses form, the more important features will be presented in a number of short papers. The present report is the first of a series dealing with the resistance of coal-mine entries to the flow of air and considers only entries in which there are no obstructions other than the natural roughness of the ribs, roof, and floor.]

This report describes the initial results of long-range research on bit life conducted by the Bureau of Mines. Three commercial bit designs -a round-nose radial, 60° conical, and 90° conical with tungsten carbide (WC) inserts -and five experimental bits were tested. Four of the experimental bits were radial designs using polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) inserts. The fifth was a 90° conical with an oversize WC insert. Bits were worn on a high-silica sandstone typical of coal mine roofs. The bits were mounted on a 34-in-diam drum section that provided a bit speed of 565 ft/min. Cutting forces were measured on a modified vertical slotter using a three-axis force dynamometer and recorded on an FM magnetic tape recorder. Changes in cutting forces, bit weight, and airborne dust due to gradual abrasive wear and catastrophic insert failure are presented. Tabulated and graphed data, photographs of the progression of bit wear, and selected qualitative visual and auditory observations of the bits taken throughout the experiment are found in the appendixes. The results show that bit life ranged from approximately 16,000 ft for the WC round-nose radial bit to over 125,000 ft for a PDC round-nose radial. Performance, in terms of bit life, cutting forces, wear rate, frictional sparking, machine vibration, and noise was in general best with the PDC bits, followed by the rotating WC bits, with the nonrotating WC bits (round-nose radial and locked 60° conical) being the worst. The results show variations in the included tip angles of new conical bits have an insignificant influence on bit performance when the effects are averaged over the life of the bit. In addition, new bits were generally found to entrain more primary respirable dust for a given cutting distance than worn-out bits. It is hypothesized that this is due to the difference in frictional behavior between new and worn bits. The results from these tests are being used in the Bureau's cutting system model (CSM).

"INTRODUCTION Information relative to the ignition temperatures of acetylene and acetylene-air mixtures has become of particular interest recently due to a number of explosions that have occurred in 500-pound, double-rated, medium-pressure acetylene generators in shipyards on the West coast. Various suggestions have been made as to the causes of these explosions prominent among which has been that air finds its way into the acetylene generators during abnormal operation or that air remains in the carbide hopper of the generator following the purging and charging operations.This raises the question as to how and to what extent the presence of small percentages of air in acetylene affects the ease of ignition of such mixtures at the various operating pressures of the acetylene generators. The range of operating pressures in the 500-pound, double-rated generators involved in the explosions may vary from below atmospheric to 15 pounds gage.The present report gives the results of an investigation made to determine the effects of pressure on the ignition temperature of pure acetylene and of acetylene containing varying percentages of air:EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus A preliminary investigation showed that a heated quartz surface gave lower ignition temperatures than other material tested.A ""hot-spot"" method of ignition was found desirable in the case of the acetylene mixtures since the violence of the explosions was reduced by keeping most of the test mixtures at room temperature. Explosive violence was reduced further by using an ignition tube 17 mm. or less in diameter."

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. The Bureau of Mines studied the penetration of a slender cylindrical tube into a sand bed, simulating seafloor material under the application of a static load. The factorial experimental design was based on three factors: tube diameter, geometry of penetrating bit, and seawater saturation of sand, all of which were found to be significant in influencing the depth of penetration. The geometry of the penetrating bit, or shoe, is of major significance in the mechanics of penetration and should be considered the most important factor for additional study. Linear regression analyses of the load-penetration data show that the relationship is linear.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. The following equations show the relationship of these factors to operating costs:

Develop a new method for coal mint pillar stability evaluation and design based on pillar load measurements. Approach A novel approach to chain pillar stability evaluation and design for longwall coal mining panels has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The evaluation approach uses an INTEGRITY FACTOR as the criterion for stability. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells developed by the Bureau are used to measure stresses in a pillar for stability evaluation. The results are used to improve the pillar design.

"IntroductionSince the establishment of the star,just concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines.Particular areas of success have been implementation of better coal-cutting strategy to control dust generation, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomski, 1983).While dust concentrations in mining sections have been dropping considerably, one problem area has been mining sections where quartz is a considerable portion of the airborne dust. The federal regulations require that quartz content must be held below 0.1 mg/m3 in the air regardless of the concentration of the total dust. This legislation limits the allowable dust concentration to a ""reduced standard"" of 10/ (% quartz) when the quartz content of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere is more than 5%. Today, approximately one-third of underground coal mining operations have designated areas with more stringent dust standards in place, and many mines experience considerable difficulty in meeting these standards (Jankowski, and Babbitt, 1989).It is well known that metal miners subjected to respirable dusts high in quartz have a higher incidence of silicosis than those exposed to dust low in quartz. However, the role of quartz in the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis is still a highly controversial question, in spite of the large number of research projects devoted to this subject over the last 20 years. Because coal seams contain less quartz than metal ores and quartz often comes from sources outside the coal seam (e.g., roof and floor), it is difficult to relate studies that deal with the quartz content in coal seams and the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Hamilton, Ogden, and Vincent (1983) have provided a plausible explanation for the incidence of the disease by hypothesizing that the quartz content does not affect the probability of developing pneumoconiosis until some threshold value (generally thought to be about 10%) is exceeded.The objective of the research studies summarized here was to obtain a better understanding of quartz occurrences in airborne coal mine dust by studying the variations of the quartz levels in different dust sizes and the relationship between the quartz content in airborne coal mine dust and the quartz content in the mined material. The implications of the results to control of dust in high-quartz sections will also be discussed."

"Concentration, ore-dressing, or the dressing of minerals are common terms used in metallurgy and indicate processes of separating valuable minerals from worthless gangue. It is understood, of course, that the products from such processes, being separated from the various minerals and gangue, are ready for commercial sale or for further treatment by smelters and refineries.Gravity concentration takes advantage of the difference in specific gravity of the various constituent minerals and gangue of waste material in the ore. The two most common forms of concentration by this means are jigging and table concentration. Jigs usually are used in the separation of relatively coarse material and the tables for the finer material, the line of division in general being about 20 mesh.There are mar factors to be considered .before a decision can be made as to what method would be best adapted to the successful treatment of an ore and only by careful experiments can this be determined. Among the important factors to be considered are. The nature of the minerals present, their physical and chemical relations to the gangue material, and the gangue material itself. Perhaps the most important is the number of minerals present and their relation to each other.Metals exist in ores in three principal forms -- sulphides, oxides or carbonates, and native. Concentration by gravity methods is in general best suited to sulphide ores, although in some places considerable success has, been obtained in the concentration of oxide ores by gravity methods."

Shale specific - gravity to oil - yield relationships were developed for black shales of the New Albany Formation of Kentucky from data collected on core samples representing the complete section of the formation in three counties . Linear equations for estimating oil yield from measured specific gravity and for estimating specific gravity from measured oil yield were shown to be applicable within small error limits to all the sites tested . Variation in pyrite content is the largest source of error .

Graphite is chemically identical with diamond, both being crystallized allotropic forms of carbon. Graphite obviously differs greatly from diamond in physical properties and is easily recognized by its blackness, its softness (1 to 2 on Mohs' scale), and its slick feel when rubbed between the fingers. Strictly speaking, all graphite is crystalline, but grades in which the individual grains cannot be distinguished with the naked eye are commercially classed as amorphous. Natural mixtures of the two varieties occur in all proportions, and the classification of a given sample as "amorphous" or "crystalline" graphite is based largely upon trade practice. Until recently different varieties of vegetable or animal charcoal, lamp black, soot, gas carbon, and coal ware considered strictly amorphous, but modern examination by X-ray methods indicates that even these materials possess the same internal crystalline structure as graphite, differences in physical properties being perhaps explained by porosity or presence of combined hydrogen or other impurities.

The differences in starch demands that occur between ore types subjected to the anionic flotation of calcium-activated gangue and the range of residual starch contents expected to give the best metallurgical response were evaluated on a batch and pilot plant basis. A phenol-sulfuric acid procedure was used to determine the residual starch contents in the iron ore slurries. Three pilot plant campaigns on samples from a group of orebodies located on the Marquette Range, Michigan, showed that in the rougher flotation pulp, a residual carbohydrate range of 25 to 100 ppm, which is equivalent to a 0.5 lb/short ton spread, yielded optimum results. Concentrates assaying at least 65 percent Fe and less than 6.0 percent Si02 and containing more than 80 per-cent of the recoverable iron were obtained. Both batch and continuous research indicated that starch adsorption is calcium modulated and relatively unaffected by the fatty acid additions employed. Residual starch level is not a critical control factor, but the addition must be adjusted to about 25 to 50 ppm residual starch and kept in this range for most effective utilization of the added tapioca flour.

THE WORLDWIDE economic expansion that has characterized the first 3 years of the 1960's continued through 1964 and was reflected in North America by strength in the industrial economy of the United States, which again was dominant. Advances in production were recorded in virtually all industries, including the mineral industry; 1964 mineral production established a new high, 5.4 percent above the previous peak recorded in 1963. However, the percentage increase in value of North American mineral production was slightly below overall economic growth. For industry in general, consumer demand held firm throughout the year and overall commodity prices averaged 2 percent higher than in 1963. Wages and salary payments also were up. With the single exception of the dock strike in the United States, the year was free of serious labor troubles and unemployment in both Canada and the States was at a low level. Despite the Viet-Nam situation, relatively tranquil international relations contributed to the forward movement of North American business. Total gross national product (GNP) for Canada and United States, in current dollars, was estimated at US$672.2 billion; 6.8 percent above the previous year's figure. Combined national income in 1964 amounted to US$546.9 billion, which was nearly 7.0 percent more than in 1963. In 1964, gains were recorded in each of more than 50 metals, nonmetals, and fuels commodities that comprise the North American output. The greatest category increase was 13 percent in metals, which was in part attributable to the 14 percent rise to a new record in value of iron and steel in United States, a 29 percent higher value of Canadian iron ore and a 57 percent rise in Canadian zinc. Despite a moderate decline in prices of iron ore and iron and steel products, generally favorable markets and rising prices for metallic ores and metals were a stimulant to the metals industry. Nonmetallic materials, with a total value in excess of US$5.25 billion were 7.3 percent higher than in 1963. "Usually a newly developed machine leaves the factory ""on a wing and a prayer."" The manufacturer hopes that the operator will hasten to report defects. In turn, when the suggestions arrive the manufacturer makes the required changes and maintains close collaboration with the operator. Thus the history of our machines of today is written.Laboratory concentration tables are exceptions to growth by experiment and collaboration. Their operation never enters directly into the cost sheet; they are seldom used for longer periods than 10 minutes; and the experimenter, while hurrying to another job, accepts the table, good or bad, for a quick test on his ore. Thus we go back about 50 years when we use the preset in factory-built laboratory table.The Southern Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, recognized the existence of a tabling problem net usually considered. Eleven are gelatinous, 56 are the granular type, and four are water-gel explosives, an entirely new type of ammonium nitrate-based explosive for use in coal mines. At the microscopic laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Intermountain Experiment Station, Salt Lake City, Utah, efforts are being made to devise methods of differentially coloring finely crashed minerals as a means for their identification. Staining would facilitate sight recognition of minerals under the microscope and would be of great value in the study of crushed ores, concentrates, and tailings. Since the treatment of ores for their beneficiation is primarily based on the recovery of the minerals containing the clements of value, it is extremely important that these minerals should be known and that a method for quickly determining them when in minute fragments should be available. Herein lies one of the greatest uses for color methods. In many cases it is a difficult matter for even the trained petrographer and mineralogist to identify finely crushed minerals quickly. Although ordinary petrographic methods are accurate, they are often time--consuming and are not suitable to the needs of millmen who require, especially in the examination of tailings a method for determining minerals by inspection.
