The Federal Bureau of Mines studied the thermal decomposition of the nitrides of the Group V A metals (CbN, Ta3N5, and VN) with the goal of preparing high-purity metals. Solid-state purification and arc and electron-beam melting were examined. Electron-beam melting proved to be the most efficient means of nitrogen and oxygen removal. Columbium and tantalum of 99.9-pct purity were prepared by this technique; in the case of vanadium, however, nitrogen could not be reduced below the solid-solution level.

For many years mining men have sought for a portable device that would be direct reading and permit more positive detection of methane than was possible with flame safety lamps, which depended so largely on the training, skill, and personal ability of the user. Through the years, after the discovery that methane contributed to many mine explosions, considerable effort and large sums of money have been expended in searching for and developing instruments that would be practical, and, at the same time, reliable and safe to use. Very early in the history of the Bureau of Mines, some of its engineers were unsuccessful, after many trials, in attempts to develop such an instrument. Commercial firms, however, persisted in research until today a number of instruments are on the market that have proved to be practical in coal-mine service. It is hoped, however, that further research will bring about improvements in accuracy and other desirable features. BUREAU OF MINES STANDARD FOR METHANE DETECTORS The Bureau of Mines recognized the need for establishing minimum requirements on which to base official approval of suitable Instruments. This standard was prepared as Schedule 8. It was revised before being issued in printed form. The revision was published as Schedule 8A in 1920 and was revised on two other occasions. The present edition, known as Schedule BC, was issued October 31, 1935.

Microseismic noise rates and slope movements were measured in an unstable area along the north wall of the Tripp-Veteran pit, Kennecott Copper Corp., Ruth, Nev. Low-noise, wide-band microseismic geophones were located at various points in the wall, and the change in distance across open fractures, resulting from instability, was determined by repeated measurements between fixed points set on each side of the fractures. The microseismic noise rate increased and decreased with corresponding increases and decreases in the rate at which the fractures opened. The microseismic noise rates and changes in width of the fractures show excellent agreement, and the two types of measurements complement each other in monitoring the progress of pit wall failure.

The Bureau of Mines explored the use of air or natural gas for recovering additional oil from natural water-drive reservoirs with little or no original gas saturation. Engineering and production data for a field in the Mid-Continent area, results of limited laboratory experiments, and data shown in the literature were considered. Injecting air into a water-coned well could seriously damage the well. Injecting natural gas into the watered-out zone could improve the producing water-oil ratio. In the reservoir studied, oil recovery can be increased by injecting natural gas to decrease water-oil ratios. Laboratory tests on a core from the field show an increase in oil recovery of 7.6 percent of the original oil in place as a result of increasing the free gas saturation. This recovery could amount to as much as an additional 6 million barrels of oil from this field.

This paper deals with truck haulage methods and costs at one of the many open-cut mines that are replacing rail haulage with heavy-duty trucks. At this mine, ore is trucked to a crushing plant, centrally located within one of the open-cuts. The requirements for efficient low-cost truck haulage are: Good trucks designed for heavy loads, adequate truck maintenance, smooth roads, and well-trained truck drivers The weighted average cost of hauling a long ton of ore to the crusher and the waste to the dump was reduced from $0.1993 in 1948 to $0.1114 during the last half of 1949, his corresponds to a cost per ton mile of $0.0864.

Provide reliable, early-warning fire detection instruments, telemetry, and control systems for noncoal underground mines. Approach Industrial-grade fire detection instruments and signal telemetry equipment were modified for long-term exposure to harsh underground mine conditions, then were installed in four mines to evaluate long-term performance and reliability. How It Works The elapsed time between the onset of a fire and its detection is critical because fires tend to grow in size and intensity with time. Early fire detection and warning permit the initiation of a mine's emergency plan (evacuation, fire fighting, etc.) while the fire is still small, or ideally, while it is still in the incipient stage. Fire detection and warning systems, utilizing sensitive heat, flame, smoke, and gas analyzers, provide the most rapid and reliable indication of a developing fire.

Magnesia spinel (MgO.Al203) recovered from dusting slags in the system MgO.Al203-2Ca0.SiO2 is in the form of single crystals most of which will pass 35-mash. This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the concentrates as a refractory raw material. Three specific types of refractory bricks were studied: (1) dense, (2) lightweight bubble, and (3) insulating. Test specimens ware fabricated 1 by dry pressing, fired to 1,675° C., and tested by procedures common to the industry. The concentrates produced a refractor, having satisfactory density and mechanical strength; however, spinal is sensitive to thermal shock and the possibility of producing a spall-resistant brick using aggregate of such small grain-size must be considered remote. Lightweight refractorias fabricated of spinel bubbles were the most promising of the types tested. They were 30 percent lighter in sight than the dense refractory, their mechanical strength was good, and definite superiority in thermal shock resistance was indicated.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses. In response, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts research to reduce the noise emission of various underground coal mining equipment, an example of which is a roof bolting machine (RBM). After the removal of coal or rock, the remaining strata may be subject to fall, either from overhead (the roof) or from the side (the rib). One method used in underground coal-mines to prevent failures requires the installation of roof bolts. The roof bolting machine operator trams the machine to the required location, drills a hole into the strata, and then installs a roof bolt, supporting the roof or the rib, as the case may be. Field studies support the premise that, on average, drilling noise is the loudest noise that a roof bolting machine operator would be exposed to and contributes significantly to the operators? noise exposure. NIOSH has determined that the drill steel radiates a significant amount of noise during drilling. NIOSH is developing bit and chuck isolators to reduce vibration, and thus noise radiation of the drill steel, with the longer-term goal of reducing roof bolting machine operator noise exposure. Laboratory testing has shown that operator ear sound pressure levels may be reduced by 3 to 7 dB(A), depending upon the test configuration and drilling media.

The objective of this report is to explain a statistical method for the summarization, organization, and classification of multivariate assay and other data from the mineral industry. Multivariate data are those characterized by several measurements at each data point, such as assay data from a mixed metal mine, or blast furnace data. A specific method of linear discriminant analysis, the Mahalanobis d2 procedure, is explained, starting from elementary principles; the d2 procedure enables many measurements at many data points to be studied by investigating the interrelationships among the data. The relation of linear discriminant analysis to other statistical methods for treating multivariate data, in particular the eigenvalue technique of factor analysis, is also explained. Example analyses are made on data from the Frisco mine, San Francisco del Oro, Chihuahua, Mexico. The data comprise assay values for silver, lead, copper, and zinc taken at some 19,000 sample points distributed into 91 groups.

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with information regarding (1) the effects of jointing and bedding on rock fragmentation when bench blasting in two small-scale (2.5-ft) limestone benches, and (2) the successful use of inexpensive equipment and field techniques to determine the orientation and spacing of joints and bedding separations within the quarry. Using inexpensive equipment, such as a pocket transit and steel and paper tapes, joint and bedding separations were mapped and their frequencies measured. Results from two small-scale bench blasts in the Stewartville member of the Galena limestone formation showed that when the row of vertical blast-holes was oblique to the vertical joint orientations, the backface expression was outlined by two relatively large triangular protrusions (joint surfaces). In this blast, part of the rock burden was unbroken. When the line of vertical blastholes paralleled a predominant joint set, all of the rock burden was broken and displaced. The thickness of fragments that had been displaced by a blast correlated with the observed bedding thickness in the bench.

Air quantity-pressure and methane concentration surveys were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in accessible portions of an area being pillared in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in West Virginia. These included two mined-out and three active butt headings and a bleeder system. The particular mine workings were started in virgin coal directly from a set of main headings; the main reason for the study was the difficulty usually encountered in adequately bleeding the gobs under such conditions. Although the two separate return airways in each active butt heading and the North and 1 Left bleeders contained acceptable methane concentrations (0.01 to 0.78 percent in the butts and 0.73 to 1.0 percent in the bleeders) with significant total methane removal (109 cfm in butts and 631 cfm in bleeders), there were relatively large areas in the gobs with possible minimal airflows. This condition appears to have developed from lack of systematic regulation of the airflow across the gobs and appears to indicate the existence of considerably more methane in the probably low flow areas in the gob.

PURPOSE This report provides an integrative review of 52 recently published research reports that examine the associations between long working hours and illnesses, injuries, health behaviors, and performance. The report is restricted to a description of the findings and methods and is not intended as an exhaustive discussion of all important issues related to long working hours. Findings and methods are summarized as reported by the original authors, and the study methods are not critically evaluated for quality. SUMMARY In 16 of 22 studies addressing general health effects, overtime was associated with poorer perceived general health, increased injury rates, more illnesses, or increased mortality. One meta-analysis of long work hours suggested a possible weak relationship with preterm birth. Overtime was associated with unhealthy weight gain in two studies, increased alcohol use in two of three studies, increased smoking in one of two studies, and poorer neuropsychological test performance in one study. Some reports did not support this trend, finding no relationship between long work hours and leisure-time physical activity (two of three studies) and no relationship with drug abuse (one study). A pattern of deteriorating performance on psycho physiological tests as well as injuries while working long hours was observed across study findings, particularly with very long shifts and when 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work a week. Four studies that focused on effects during extended shifts reported that the9thto 12th hours of work were associated with feelings of decreased alertness and increased fatigue, lower cognitive function, declines in vigilance on task measures, and increased injuries. Two studies examining physicians who worked very long shifts reported deterioration on various measures of cognitive performance. When 12-hour shifts combined with other work-related demands, a pattern of more adverse findings was detected across studies. Six studies examining 12-hour shifts combined with more than 40 hours of work per week reported increases in health complaints, deterioration in performance, or slower pace of work. Two studies com-paring 8- and 12-hour schedules during day and night shifts reported that 12-hour night shifts were associated with more physical fatigue, smoking, or alcohol use. Two studies examining start times for 12-hour shifts reported that decrements in alertness or more health complaints were associated with early 6:00 a.m. start times. One study examining 12-hour shifts in hot work environments reported a slower pace of work as compared with shorter shifts. Another study examining high workloads during 12-hour shifts showed increased discomfort and deterioration in performance as compared with shorter shifts. More definitive statements about differences between 8-hour and 12-hour shifts are difficult because of the inconsistencies in the types of work schedules examined across studies. Work schedules differed by the time of day (i.e., day, evening, night), fixed versus rotating schedules, speed of rotation, direction of rotation, number of hours worked per week, number of consecutive days worked, number of rest days, and number of weekends off. All of these factors could have interacted with overtime and influenced study results. The Douglas fluorite property is in the Empire district of eastern Pope County, Ill., which lies near the west boundary of the productive Southern Illinois fluorspar field in Hardin and Pope Countios. Production from mines on the Douglas property accounts for about one-half of the 72,000 tons of fluorspar with which the Empire district is credited. This output was from the Sycamore, Pierce, Slapout, and Empire veins, which are normal fissure veins of little displacement along which there has been local wall-rock replacement by fluorite.

"INTRODUCTION The Ward copper deposit was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in September 1943 by John J. Knob, 217 E. Penn Street, Long Beach, N. Y. At that time all Bureau of Mines work on Seward Peninsula was being directed to the exploration of deposits of tin, a metal high on the strategic list. It was not until September 1946 that the Bureau could make a preliminary examination of the Ward prospect.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This report presents the results of laboratory mineral-dressing investigations by the Bureau of Mines of 14 individual or composite character samples from deposits in the Batesville manganese district. It will be noted that some concentrates have met or approached analytical specifications for metallurgical manganese ore although great variations in both physical and chemical composition from once deposit to another make each a new problem. In most cases it is evident that a substantial loss of manganese has occurred in the various slime and tailing products. An important aspect of this work is the research being conducted on manganese-bearing limestones. Recent reconnaissance indicates that this resource constitutes one of the major domestic reserves of manganese. Laboratory study has shown that ferrograde concentrates can be recovered from samples of manganese-bearing limestones from two properties. Research on samples from other areas is still underway.

This report summarizes the work performed on Bureau of Mines Contract J0199106, "Portable Trailing Cables, Splices, and Couplers - Design and Installation Considerations," from May 1, 1979 until December 31, 1981. Splice installations and considerations for the possible use of conductive-rubber shielding in low-voltage trailing cables as well as coupler installations in high-voltage cables were the principal tasks. Flammability measurements on cable components and general testing facilities for mine electrical equipment were secondary tasks. Theoretical and empirical data indicate that conductive rubber with high resistivity values is an unsatisfactory shield design for current-sensing fault detection. Elimination of partial discharge in coupler installations requires meticulous care.

Limited experiments in the laboratory with specimens of mine rock from a Virginia bituminous coal mine indicate that natural gas-air mixtures can be ignited by sparks generated by rubbing friction of sandstone against sand-stone, shale against sandstone, sandstone against (roof-bolt) steel, and shale against steel. Such sparks, generated during a roof fall, may have initiated a recent gas explosion in this Virginia mine, although this cannot be stated with certainty. No ignitions of gas were produced by sparks or heat generated by impact friction between mine rocks or steel, during tension breaks of roof bolts, or by pull tests of roof bolts through their washers and roof plate. However, this negative result of limited experiments does not preclude the possibility of gas being ignited by these conditions.

"INTRODUCTION The use of gasoline engines as the motive power for lift trucks, tractors, and other types of mobile equipment operated in enclosed spaces, such as industrial plants and warehouses, may create a hazard because of the carbon monoxide present in the exhaust gases of the engines; gasoline-powered equipment should not be used in mines or tunnels. Because the equipment is mobile, local ventilation usually is impracticable, and general ventilation of the spaces is nec-essary to dilute and remove the carbon monoxide. To estimate the rate of ventilation required in such situations, information is necessary on the concentration of carbon monoxide in the exhaust gas and the rate at which exhaust gas is produced under given operating conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present data that may be used in making estimates of ventilation requirements.COMPOSITION OF GASOLINE-ENGINE EXHAUST GASThe exhaust gas of a gasoline engine consists mainly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, oxygen, and unburned hydrocarbons (usually reported as methane), together with the nitrogen present as a residue from the air sup-plied for combustion. 3/ The exhaust also contains water vapor resulting from combustion of the hydrogen of the fuel. The water-vapor content is not included in exhaust-gas analyses calculated on a ""dry"" basis and is not involved in the estimation of ventilation requirements."
