1. The investigation shows that the Poplar Creek and Big Mary beds contain the largest known recoverable reserves of coal in Morgan County, Tenn. The Poplar Creek bed has been the most productive. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 96 million tons, as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 59 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics were too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to determine how well the Bendix BDX 60, the Gilian HFS 113U, the MSA Fixt-Flo, and the Spectrex PAS-3000 dust sampling pumps control the flow rate at 2 L/min. These tests were performed because users need to know the performance characteristics of sampling pumps to select the pump that best satisfies their sampling requirements. Long-term (6- to 8-h) flow stability at various backpressures was examined in relation to the flow control tolerance of ±5% of the flow, the level imposed by Federal regulations; four of the five Bendix pumps did not meet the criterion for this test, which was passed by all other pumps tested. Flow control recovery times were measured at transient backpressures; all pumps evaluated met the criterion for this test. The low-flow indicators of the sampling pumps were tested; only two Bendix pumps and one Gilian pump met the criterion of indicating a flow change greater than ±5%. In the pulsation flow measurement test all of the pumps passed, with pulsating flows greater than 20 Hz. The Bureau also evaluated the manuals accompanying the sampling pumps. All were judged adequate except the Spectrex manual, which was judged poor.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to devise technology for increasing the Nation's mineral supply by recovering valuable constituents from currently discarded waste materials. Municipal solid waste (MSW), presently a major disposal problem, represents a significant source of metals, glass, and a combustible fraction that can be used to supplement coal in generating heat and electricity. As part of the total metallurgical system to treat MSW, this study evaluates the combustible fraction of MSW to characterize the various combustible components and to identify the principal sources of elements that eventually may be objectionable from corrosive or environmental considerations. Several possible sources for cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc have been tentatively identified. These sources are pigments, inks, paper stock, and additives to plastics. A correlation between industry consumption values and measured concentrations in MSW was found for several elements.

A joint effort by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fourth phase of testing from 1989 to 1993. The SCSRYs were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS). These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform as expected except units with manufacturing defects. However, when the apparatus are carried in and out of the mine daily and stored at the working section, they may suffer abuse. Physical signs of abuse, unless extremely obvious, are frequently not detected by the miners or mine operators. In addition, some apparatus collected for this study had not been returned to the manufacturer in a recall effort for correction of a manufacturing defect. In both cases, the apparatus would have presented problems in emergency use. Recommendations include improved training in inspection procedures and better enforcement of recall notices.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has conducted research to improve the nondestructive testing (NDT) of wire hoist ropes. Losses in the diameter of a wire hoist rope are used as one criterion for judging when a rope should be replaced. Losses are determined by periodically measuring the rope diameter and comparing this measurement with the original measured diameter; when the diameter reaches a specified minimum at any point along its length, the rope must be retired. Generally, these measurements are made at randomly selected locations along the length of the rope, using a hand caliper. To provide more accurate measurements and to allow measurements to be taken continuously along the length of a hoist rope, an optical diameter-monitoring system was built for the USBM under contract. Continuous measurements are preferable because, when combined with continuous electro-magnetic NDT results, they can indicate whether losses in metallic cross-sectional area originate from external wear or internal wear and corrosion. Tests of the system showed that the instrument met specifications when measuring wire rope at low rope speeds but was inaccurate at speeds over about 30 m/min (100 ft/min). This report describes the prototype system, presents the results of the test program, and describes the capabilities of the system.

"SummaryDiesel-exhaust particles from two sources were dispersed in aqueous mixtures of dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline, a major component of pulmonary surfactant, and were tested for genotoxicity. Diesel samples from the same sources were extracted with dichloromethane and transferred into dimethyl sulfoxide and subjected to the same assays. Both types of extractions yielded similar results in both the Salmonella mutagenicity assay and the sister-chromatid exchange assay using V79 cells. After separation of the samples into supernatant and sediment fractions, the activity of both diesel samples was shown to reside exclusively in the supernatant fraction for the solvent-extracted samples, and exclusively in the sedimented fraction for surfactant dispersed samples. These findings indicate that genotoxic activity associated with diesel particles inhaled into the lung may be made bioavailable by virtue of the solubilization / dispersion properties of pulmonary surfactant components.While diesel engine emissions are associated primarily with transportation, they are also very common in the workplace. Estimates for the U.S. are that as many as 1.35 million workers in as many as 80 000 workplaces are exposed to the combustion products of diesel engines (NIOSH, 1988). These occupations include, but are not limited to mining, agriculture, motor vehicle maintenance, fork lift truck driving, truck driving, and tunnel and bridge operation."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under a Memorandum of Agreement with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), established design criteria for a facility to melt residues from municipal waste combustion. This facility, which is available to potential users on a cost-sharing basis, is also applicable to a variety of inorganic waste materials from smelting or melting operations. The design consists of a mechanical feed handling system, electric arc melting furnace, fume-offgas handling system, and thermal oxidizer for final offgas treatment. Screw conveyors and a bucket elevator deliver up to 2,000 lb/h of minus I-in material to a three-phase electric arc melting furnace. This unique 800-kV?A furnace has a water-cooled shell and roof to minimize interaction of the melt with the refractory lining. The volume of the hearth below the slag taphole is approximately 1.2 st of steel. The furnace is sealed, allowing atmosphere control within the furnace and fume duct by nitrogen or inert gas injection. A jet-pulsed baghouse removes particulate from the offgas and serves as an acid gas scrubber. The clean offgas is heated to 1,800° F for 1 s in a propane-fired thermal oxidizer before being vented to the atmosphere.

THE BITUMINOUS coal and lignite industry declined slightly in 1961, compared with the 1960 figures. All of the major items, production, consumption, average value, exports, and employment, declined. Even the steady upward trend in mechanization failed to materialize; the percentages of total tonnages mechanically loaded and cleaned remained the same as in the preceding year. However, tonnage per man per day increased from 12.83 tons in 1960 to 13.87 tons in 1961, owing partly to the increased tonnage produced by continuous mining machines. Also, the percentage of total production mined by stripping and by augers increased slightly. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1961-403 million tons-was 3 percent less than the 416 million tons produced in 1960. Production was retarded in 1961, owing largely to the business recession and reduced exports.

This Bureau of Mines study covers 25 underground mines that were active in the Upper and Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coalbeds in 1976. The coal ranges from low to medium volatile in rank; its primary use is for steam generation. Seven mines emit more than 100,000 cfd of methane gas; those mines are the deepest and largest producers. The methane gas content of three core samples of the Lower Kittanning coalbed was estimated by the direct method. A sample from a depth of 320 feet contained 0.5 cu cm of gas per gram, at 620 feet there was 0.8 cu cm of gas per gram, and at 1,060 feet there was 11 cu cm of gas per gram. These results suggest that methane control problems will be encountered in the future as deeper coal is mined.

This report presents the results of a washability study of 322 coal mine samples showing the sulfur forms and distribution in the coals. The samples were collected from mines which were principally utility coal producers. Generally, the data show the total sulfur content of the coals evaluated could be significantly reduced by some combination of stage crushing and specific gravity separation. However, few coals could be upgraded to a final product containing 1 percent or less total sulfur. The complete washability data are presented for each sample processed. A statistical evaluation is included for the coalbeds from which more than 10 samples were collected and for the geographical coal producing regions. A graphical summation is presented for the coal producing regions and selected coalbeds.

Not long after electrically driven equipment was introduced into coal mines it became apparent that the spark-producing parts, such as controllers and motors, required safeguards to prevent the ignition of mine gas that might come into their vicinity. Many of the early designs attempted to provide protective enclosures having ventila¬tion and relief for pressures if ignition should occur within. The principal feature of the Davy safety lamp, namely, the wire gauze, was employed widely for this purpose. Other devices were developed to reduce the temperature of products of combustion escaping through the protected openings to a value below that which would cause ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres. Although many such devices performed their intended function satisfactorily under laboratory conditions they were not so satisfac¬tory when subjected to the rigorous conditions encountered under¬ground. Corrosion, mishandling, and accumulations of grease and dirt reduced or destroyed their protective qualities after a period of service in the mines. In the United States this has led to abandon¬ment of special devices in favor of what is called " total enclosure " which means that no regular provision is made for ventilation and release of pressure but rather that the housings or enclosures are built strong enough to withstand the explosion pressures without rupture. As a further protection the joints usually are made of broad, closely fitting surfaces. It is impractical to make such joints absolutely gastight in ordinary machine practice when provision must be made for partial or complete disassembly to facilitate ad¬justments and repairs. Therefore, when an explosion occurs within such enclosures flames may escape through the joints. If the latter are broad enough and not separated too widely, however, the flames will be cooled by contact with the metal surfaces (flanges) of the joints, by rapid expansion, or by both cooling and expansion, with the result that an explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure will not be ignited. The Bureau of Mines conducted research into the dispersion strengthening of lead by the coprecipitation method. Commercially available reagents in water solutions were reacted to form homogeneous precipitates of lead and aluminum compounds. The resulting precipitates were roasted to oxides and reduced in hydrogen to form mixtures of lead powder and alumina. The powders were isostatically pressed into billets which were extruded into rods. The rods were rolled into strip to provide material for testing. Alloys containing 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 nominal volume-percent A1203 were tested in short-time tensile tests and in tensile creep tests. An alloy of Pb-3 volume-percent A1203 exhibited an average tensile strength of 8,570 psi after rolling to 75-percent reduction at 125° C but had no measurable elongation. Alloys of lower A1203 content provided a better compromise between tensile strength and ductility. For example, an alloy of Pb-0.5 volume-percent A1203 had an average tensile strength of 6,590 psi with 9-percent elongation after rolling to 75-percent reduction at 125° C. Creep rates of dispersion-strengthened Pb-A1203 alloys were below 1 percent in 10,000 hours at stresses of 2,000 to 4,000 psi.

"The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

This Part is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a corner. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency which propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

In 1984, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Black Rock Desert Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (NV-020-620), which covers approximately 319,000 acres in Humboldt County, Nevada. About 90% of the WSA is underlain by Pleistocene desert playa sediments; the remainder is comprised of Jurassic-Triassic metamorphic rocks, a Cretaceous intrusive and Tertiary volcanic rocks. Most of the WSA is within a down-dropped fault block of the Basin and Range physiographic province. No mines or evidence of major exploration were identified within the WSA; but five claim blocks within or adjacent to the WSA and zones of anomalous character as defined by the Bureau of Land Management were examined. No mineral resources were identified, but anomalous gold, silver, and indicator element content of samples taken near Pinto Hot Springs indicate resources may exist. Lithium content of samples from near-surface sediments on the desert playa is too low for resources, out geologic conditions are favorable for higher concentrations at depth. Occurrences of zeolites are not considered to be of commercial interest. Approximately 27,000 acres are held under geothermal lease, and most of the WSA is of interest for oil and gas. No evaluation of these commodities was made by the Bureau of Mines

"An investigation of protocols for research performed from 1953 to 1988 on pneumoconioses (with emphasis on diseases related to coal and silica) was conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust. In addition, interviews were conducted with prominent U.S. medical researchers, aerosol scientists and engineers in government, industry, and universities to determine dust sources, dust preparation methods, laboratory protocols, and determinant variables related to in vitro and in vivo research and assess the comparability of results.Since the original report on the protocol project, additional research regarding free radical existence in freshly produced dust particles and the shape and contamination of particles generated for research purposes has further heightened scientists' concerns. As indicated by current research, fresher dust particles and those with more angular shapes may have a different level of reactivity in biological systems than do older or more rounded particles. Therefore, research on dust preparation methods for biomedical studies was undertaken and will be outlined here.Results of protocol review and interviews are summarized. Research on size reduction methods and their particle characteristics plus some recommendations concerning dust preparation methods and reporting in biomedical publications are also presented. Recent evidence indicates that these recommendations may be of importance in comparing and interpreting research results."

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. During the summer of 1973 we were asked to perform a theoretical investigation of the propagation of low frequency (LF) radio waves down deep (10,000 feet) hoistshafts* for the case where the hoist cable ("rope") is the only metal conductor present. Propagation is by means of the TEM coaxial mode of transmission in which the hoist cable serves as the inner conductor and the surrounding rock acts as the outer conductor. Since the rock is a relatively poor electrical conductor the current in the outer conductor of the coaxial line is not confined to a very thin surface layer as in a metal coaxial cable, but spreads radially to a distance that is generally many times the shaft diameter. This feature of the wave propagation requires a more sophisticated theoretical treatment than the approximate skin-depth theory that is adequate for metal coaxial lines. In this Part we treat the hoist shaft wave propagation loss, characteristic impedance, and the field current distributions in the surrounding rock medium. We also show that the large penetration of the wave into the rock outer conductor does not present a difficult problem with regard to coupling the transmitter or receiver to the transmission line with a minimum of insertion loss, but that the large impedance mismatch caused by the capacitance termination between the cage and shaft wall may well be the most significant contribution to overall system loss. Inductive coupling and impedance matching to the hoist rope/shaft transmission line are also treated briefly. Preliminary results indicate that a broad minimum in overall system loss should occur between 100 kHz and 1 MHz, possibly centered around 300 kHz. Further work is needed to better quantify this signal loss behavior, compare it with hoist shaft electromagnetic noise spectral data recently acquired by NBS, and identify the most favorable operating frequencies.
