Stimulated vertical boreholes are an effective means of removing gas from coalbeds in advance of mining. This Bureau of Mines report examines the coal mine roof damage potential of stimulation treatments. Twenty-two Government-sponsored stimulation treatments have been mined through to determine the effects on the coalbed and roof strata. Vertical fractures in the coalbed were discernible for most treatments and horizontal fractures were present for about half of the stimulations. Sand-propped vertical fractures were usually short in lateral extent. Evidence of stimulation fluid movement could generally be traced beyond the maximum extent of sand-filled fractures when fluorescent paint was added to the treatment fluids. The maximum lateral extent for a sand-filled vertical fracture was 416 ft and a paint-coated vertical fracture extended 630 ft. Horizontal fractures were generally found within bedding planes, most commonly on top of the coalbed. The maximum lateral extent for a horizontal fracture was 265 ft at a coalbed depth of 630 ft. Horizontal fractures have been found to occur as deep as 1,145 ft. Penetration of strata overlying coalbeds was observed in nearly half of the treatments intercepted. Most of these occurrences have been interpreted to be penetrations into preexisting joints. No roof falls or adverse mining conditions were encountered that could be attributed to the stimulations.

Destructive distillation (carbonization) was shown to be a feasible method of disposing of scrap tires. The Bureau of Mines conducted tests under a variety of conditions. Solid, liquid, and gaseous products were produced, recovered, and analyzed. The quantities of the various products were shown to be quite dependent on the test temperature. Variability in composition of the liquid and gaseous products with changes in test temperature was also significant.

The objective of this Bureau of Mines research work was (1) to determine how well the E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company P-2500 personal dust sampling pump controls the flow rate at 2 L/min and (2) to compare respirable dust mea-surements made using the P-2500 with those made using a nonpulsating sampling flow system, both using the Dorr-Oliver 10-mm nylon cyclone dust size classifier. The calibrator and the operation manual for the P-2500, supplied by the manufacturer, were also evaluated. Flow tests consisted of long-term (6-to 8-hour) flow stability tests at various backpressures, a low-flow indicator examination, flow controller response time tests and pulsation tests. Dust tests were performed using coal, silica, and Arizona road dust. No tests were performed to examine effects of temperature, barometric pressure, vibration, or mechanical shock. These pumps performed well within manufacturer specifications in all tests.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the extraction of lithium from hectorite-type clay deposits found on the Nevada-Oregon border. Two clay samples were used in the investigation; one contained 0.36 pct Li and the second contained 0.64 pct Li. The purpose of this laboratory-scale research was to determine how these clays responded to different extraction techniques. Extraction techniques investigated were sulfuric acid leach, sulfuric acid bake-water leach, and roast-water leach procedures with cholorides, sulfates, carbonates, and combinations of these reagents. The processing characteristics of the clay samples showed significant variations, and no one technique was effective for both materials. Lithium extractions near 90 pct were achieved during these exploratory studies.

The methodology for describing the geochemistry of elements in a coal seam have been developed. This has been applied to the Rosebud Coal Seam, which is an economically important member of the subbituminous coals of the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana. The method development has involved a detailed study of two popular techniques for determining the metal geochemistry of coal, namely, whole coal analyses and coal physical fractionation. The mathematically contrived element associations (whole coal analyses technique) and the element concentration trends in the float and sink fractions (physical fractionation technique) are considered to lead to only qualitative conclusions concerning the chemical associations of the elements in coals. Additionally, the processes taking place with the coal during low temperature ashing in an oxygen plasma are experimentally investigated and shown to be of sufficeint extent that the use of such low temperature ash for deciphering element geochemistry is questionable. The method developed in this study is a chemical fractionation that involves the sequential leaching of coal with water, 0.5 N HC1, 3 N HC1, 2 N HNO3, and 48% HF. These leach solutions are shown to selectively dissolve the predominate inorganic phases, sulfates, Ca and Mg carbonates, Fe sulfides and K alumino-silicates and quartz, respectively. These phases were identified with the use of XRD, SEM, EM and leaches (water and 0.3 N HC1) of whole coal and low temperature ash. The incorporation of the anion-exchange step in the leaching scheme was investigated and was observed to warrant further study of such intensity to be, at the time, unuseable. The use of this sequential leaching technique on several coal samples from the same seam generates element concentration trends that can be quantitatively interpreted with respect to the chemical associations of the minor and trace metals in the coal seam. The properties of the various seams of economic importance in the Fort Union Formation in Eastern Montana are compiled and presented. The subsequent conclusion is that there is not a large variation in the properties of these coal seams and that the variations within the Rosebud are within one order of magnitude. The chemical fractionation technique, investigated in this study, was applied to composite tipple samples of the Rosebud seam. Each composite sample represented 76,800 tons of coal. A minimum of 32% of the Ca and Mg are present as separate water soluble sulfates. An excess of the sulfate ion in the water extracts shows the predominating influence of the ion exchange capacity of the organic compounds in the coal. Based upon the CO content of the coal and the HC1 leachate data, 25 to 30% of the alkaline earth elements exist as separate carbonates and the remainder are associated with the organic compounds. The small fraction of the illite that dissolves in the HC1 and HNO3 leachates accounts for the K and Al. Slight dissolution of the pyrite in the HCl solvent occurs, the small amounts of Li and As do not relate to any known phase and Mn is present as a separate carbonate phase. Fe and a significant amount of the As exist in the pyrite that is dissolved in the HNO. Se is equally partitioned between the pyrite and the organic compound~. Most of the trace elements are found in the HF solutions. Li, V, and Cr were interpreted to be associated with the clay minerals (kaolinite and illite). Ni and Pb appear to be present as separate phases and 50% of the Hg is HF soluble but is not chemically related to any known inorganic phase.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory, are investigating technology and methods to monitor the blind areas around large haulage equipment used in surface mines. On average, six fatalities a year can be attributed to equipment colliding with other vehicles or pedestrian workers, or backing over the edge of a dump point. Several off-the-shelf technologies exist for monitoring areas that an equipment operator cannot see from the cab, including radar, video cameras, and radio signal detection systems. NIOSH researchers have tested many of these systems on large dump trucks both at their test facility and at surface mines. This article discusses the technologies available for this application and their effectiveness in detecting objects near an off-highway dump truck. Also, guidance is presented for mine safety personnel who are planning to evaluate collision warning systems or cameras on their haulage equipment. [The rapid expansion of the petroleum industry, the steadily growing use of oil fuel or steamships, the increasing transportation of oil in tankers and the extensive use of petroleum oils for many land industries, has resulted in pollution of our coastal eaters by these oils. On account of the great importance of this problem to the petroleum and shipping industries its, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute and -he American Steamship Owners Association has undertaken to ascertain the extend of petroleum oil pollution along the coasts of the United States and to indicated the principal so arcs of such pollution. Certain typical methods and devices in use and proposed for the separation of oil from water, and for the disposal of oily castes from ships and industrial plants have been studied. An attempt has also been made to point out the nature of the fire hazard resulting from oil pollution and to indicate the effect of such pollution on bathing beaches.]

Sphalerite concentrates prepared during processing of Missouri lead ores contain small percentages of cobalt and nickel which adversely affect zinc electrolysis. The Bureau of Mines has evaluated solvent extraction and precipitation techniques to remove and recover cobalt and nickel from zinc sulfate solution prior to zinc electrolysis. Prepared zinc sulfate solutions containing about 190 gpl of zinc and 50 ppm of both cobalt and nickel were treated using various combinations of complexing reagents, solvent, pH, concentration, time, and temperature. The following complexing reagents gave the best results: a-nitroso-ß-naphthol, ß-nitroso-a-naphthol, 1,2 cyclohexane dione dioxime (nioxime), di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime, and dimethylglyoxime. These reagents in suitable solvents lowered the cobalt and nickel levels to <0.1 ppm. Stripping the complexed reagents from the solvents was not possible except for nioxime. Direct addition of the appropriate reagent to the prepared zinc sulfate solution resulted in the precipitation of cobalt and nickel. Several possible flowsheets are presented for the removal and recovery of cobalt and nickel. Good zinc deposits were successfully electrowon from zinc sulfate solutions purified by solvent extraction and precipitation.

This report describes a project in which Development of a Supervisory and Management Training Program for the Underground Coal Mining Industry was developed and evaluated. The project was carried out in two phases. The first phase was a research effort to develop specifications for the program. The second phase was a development and evaluation effort. In the second phase, training programs for first-line supervisors (section foremen) and for middle managers (mine/shift foremen and mine superintendents) were prepared in accordance with the specifications and evaluated by members of the industry. This report describes the project and presents the conclusions drawn there from.

"The Bureau of Mines receives many inquiries concerning favorable areas in which to prospect for gold, procedure to be followed, equipment required, and allied subjects. This circular has been prepared for use in reply to these inquiries.Interest in gold mining and prospecting for gold remains steady. From time to time many people take to the field to search for new gold deposits. A large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the hope that it might assist these newcomers.A majority of the metal mines in the United States have been discovered by qualified prospectors who were searching for valuable minerals at the time. Chance, however, always has played a large part in finding mineral deposits. Some of the discoveries of the past were made by men on other errands, such as rounding up burros or hunting game. Accidental discoveries of ore bodies have been made in building roads and trails and in excavating for mine struc¬tures. Evidence of ore has been brought to the surface by burrowing animals and by ants; gold found in the craws of fowl has led to discoveries of deposits. Important discoveries have been made by men who had no knowledge of rocks or minerals; on the other hand, many ore bodies have been found by experienced prospectors, sometimes after hundreds of untrained men had already passed over the ground.The prospector who carries on his work diligently and intelligently is of course more likely to be rewarded for his efforts than the lazy or unintelligent worker; nevertheless, it is obvious that if valuable deposits are not present at the place being prospected none will be found. Conscientious and painstaking efforts to trace gold to its source usually disclose nothing more valuable than some narrow, unworkable seams; however, many deposits that were developed into profitable mines were found by this method of prospecting. Although some prospectors have made several lucky strikes, many others have spent their working lives searching for gold without finding anything worth while. Probably only one prospector out of several thousand ever finds anything worth developing. Moreover, only 1 out of every 300 or 400 properties developed becomes a profitable mine.Prospecting was begun in the Western States in the fifties as the miners looked for the source of gold found in placers. The search for gold has been continuous since that time; the number of prospectors in the field at any one time, however, has varied greatly. Except in some desert regions, practicallyall of the placer fields now being worked were discovered by old timers; more-over, most of the important gold districts were found by early prospectors. Important discoveries of lode mines, however, have been made from time to time. Most of the area in the mining regions of the West has been searched many times by prospectors, and nearly all of the easily found deposits have been located, but it is reasonable to expect that new gold mines will continue to be found. Most of the future discoveries undoubtedly will be of deposits that do not outcrop. Prospecting for such deposits requires considerable digging.Several important discoveries were made in 1934. One of these, the Rogers-Gentry gold mine at the edge of Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County, Calif., was found by an experienced prospector on an old patented homestead a number of miles from the nearest producing mine. The initial discovery at this mine was an iron-stained, decomposed, silicous limestone outcrop, with no vein structure evident at the surface, near a small, barren quartz outcrop and a water seep. Another discovery, the Silver Queen gold mine, in the same general region and near Mojave, Calif., was found by an experienced miner on an open fraction 400 by 1,400 feet in size between two old properties that were thought to have been worked out years ago. The uses of talc are many but are not, in general well known or fully developed within the last decade several companies have realized the possibilities of greatly increased use and have intelligently proceeded to develop some of the fields which seemed most promising. This has had a tendency to lift talc from the obscurity in which it had existed for years, but the work is only started and much remains to be done. Considerably more attention has been paid to the technology and utilization of talc in Germany and Austria than in this country, despite the fact that the United States produces 65 of the world's talc and Germany and Austria combined but 5.4%. In the "Bericht,uber die tatigkeit des verbends der talcum-interessenten in Oesterreich-Ungarn" (Proceedings of the Austro-Hungarian Talc Association), for the years 1912 and 1913, many notes upon new uses appeared, together with suggestions as to further development of old uses. Aside from a few notes on the use of tar in paper, little has been published in the English language upon this subject. By recent action of the Talc and Soapstone Producers Association (U.S.A.) funds for research into the properties and uses of talc have been made Available and it is hoped that markets will be materially broadened a a result of this work.

Before and during World War II, the Bureau of Mines investigated a large number of ore deposits in the United States and Alaska in a search for domestic sources of strategic minerals. Deposits chosen for development included those expected to contain metals of importance in the successful prosecution of the war. This report describes the work performed and results obtained in developing the Daggett Chief manganese deposit near Manila, Daggett County, Utah (fig. 1), during 1941. The work comprised mapping and a study of the geology by the Federal Geological Survey, and bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking of two shafts, and sampling by the Bureau of Mines. Work was started April 17, 1941, and was completed June 28, 1941. Two bulk samples for metallurgical testing were taken.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effectiveness of various types of crushers for use with the Bureau-developed pneumatic concentration technique for mica. Three types of crushers were investigated in this study, a roll crusher, a jaw crusher, and a hammer mill. All the mica concentrates produced contained over 82 percent mica, but recoveries varied considerably. The roll crusher gave the lowest recovery of 46 percent of the mica followed by the jaw crusher with a recovery of 50 percent of the mica. The hammer mill proved the most effective, producing four concentrates with recoveries of at least 70 percent.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the relation-ship between geologic features and linears. Cleats, kettlebottoms, and roof rolls were mapped and superimposed on the linear plots for a coal mine in West Virginia. No clear relationships were evident. This may be due, in part, to the mining practice of leaving head coal, which obscures geologic features that may exist in the roof. Future studies should concentrate on mines where roof is extensively exposed.

Numerous mine fires have resulted in high death tolls and considerable finan¬cial loss during the history of coal mining. In most instances the death toll and financial loss were greater because of inadequate fire-fighting facilities. The information in this report is presented in the hope it may serves as a guide in the selection, placement, and care of fire-protection systems in similar coal mines. The adequacy of fire protection varies according to size of operation, employment, and production. When fires occur on the surface or underground, measures must be applied quickly to prevent incipient fires from spreading. The record of coal-mine fires shows that, in many instances, facilities for combating fires were very meager or were absent. It would be virtually impossible to establish and maintain all the necessary facili¬ties that may be needed to extinguish widespread mine fires, but it is believed that the coal industry can ill afford less than the minimum required by other industries where the time element and avenues of escape are much more favorable.

A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the applicability of the thermal oil-recovery method as a means of increasing ultimate oil recovery in the Appalachian region. The primary objective was to establish self-sustained combustion in consolidated and unconsolidated sand test assemblies saturated with various amounts of Pennsylvania Grade crude oil and synthetic brine. Tests using blocks of sandstone were unsuccessful because of sealing problems and fracturing of the rock due to thermal stresses. A combustion wave of about 700° F was propagated through the sand-oil-water packs in the linear tube tests. The high air flux used resulted in high oil consumption and rapid movement of the combustion wave through the tubes. Analytical tests on the sand pack showed that sufficient fuel was deposited during the linear tube experiments for a self-sustained combustion wave.

The estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1990 exceeded $1,501.5 billion in terms of current (1990) dollars, or almost $1,160 billion in terms of constant 1983 dollars. This latter figure was 0.3% below the 1989 level and about 3.9% below the record high to date of $1,207.1 billion 1983 dollars set in 1980. Table 1 provides the latest available revised time series of the estimated value of world crude mineral production both in terms of 1983 constant dollars and in terms of current dollars. It also provides one of the two statistical bases for this estimation, this being the data on the value of production of a group of key commodities that was compiled for and published in the authoritative French language mineral industry periodical, Annales des Mines, for selected years up to 1983.1 It should be stressed that the values just discussed and those presented in the tabulation are for crude minerals only, and by no means reflect adequately the role of the entire mineral industry in the world economy. These figures represent only the value of mineral materials as they are mined or otherwise extracted from the earth. They do not reflect the value added to these materials through downstream processing within the facilities commonly accepted as mineral industry plants. That is, value added through beneficiation of ores, smelting, refining, and similar processing is not included in these figures. Comprehensive world data on the value added by such processing are not available; however, a conservative estimate of the total value of pro-cessed output from mineral industry plants derived wholly from primary (newly mined) materials would be on the order of about $2,780 billion constant 1983 dollars or $3,600 billion in terms of 1990 dollars.

Size distributions and concentrations of particulates emitted from diesel engine exhausts were measured with cascade impactors. Samples were taken from the exhaust of two types of engines using three types of fuel and operating under five different engine speed and load conditions. The measured mass median diameters of the diesel particulates were typically about 0.3 um. There was no significant difference in mass median diameter between engines or fuels and only a slight dependence on operating mode. Concentration measurements ranged from 14.2 to 250.9 mg/cu m, and calculated mass outputs, from 64 to 10,000 mg/min. Significant differences in mass output were found between engines, fuels, and especially between different operating modes. The quantity of clean dilution air that would be required to reduce the particulate mass concentration below the 2.0 mg/cu m respirable dust standard for coal mines was greater than the dilution air required to meet the standards for noxious gases for both engines tested.
