A relatively large proportion of the coal produced 1n the State of Washington, especially in the coking coal areas is of fine size; hence washing by means or coal-washing tables to reduce the ash content is commonly practiced. For this reason the program of research in coal washing conducted jointly by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the College of Mines, University of Washington, has given special attention to the mechanism or the separation of coal from its impurities as effected by the coal-washing table with the object of increasing its efficiency. Previous work has evaluated the role of stratification the influence of size, specific gravity and respective shapes of particles in the feed, and the affect of hindered-settling classification of the feed prior to tabling.

This investigation examined the feasibility of altering the inorganic component of North Dakota lignite by ion exchange. Lignite of specific size consist was washed with various ionic solutions and examined for evidence of exchange. Ions of higher valance substituted preferentially at equivalent concentrations. Results indicate that a major portion of the inorganic material associated with lignite is combined in exchangeable form with the organic component. Particle size of the treated coal is a critical factor in determining the rate of exchange. The data indicate that monovalent ions are easily replaced by divalent and trivalent ions, and the presence of ionic material in slurries containing finely divided lignite significantly increases filtration rates.

Objective To identify techniques to reduce the probability of gob gas explosions. Background In the last 6 years, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many mine seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. Three of these gob gas explosions occurred in one mine in Alabama over a 3-year period. Fortunately, the explosion forces and the toxic gases that vented from the sealed gob area did not cause fatalities or injuries, but they destroyed several large seals. If miners had been inspecting or working near these areas, the potential for serious injury and/or death would have been high. The United Mine Workers of America and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requested that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) help identify the mechanisms for lightning penetration into the gob and recommend ways to reduce the probability of occurrence of future explosions from such lightning penetrations into sealed areas of underground coal mines. Because three of the explosions occurred in a single mine, special attention was focused on these particular explosions. The first occurred in April 1994 in a sealed area, which enclosed about 1.35square miles of abandoned workings (gob). This explosion destroyed 3 of the 38 seals that surrounded the gob. These seals were less than 2,000 ft away from three 4.5-in-diam steel-cased test wells that extended from the surface into the mine entry. At the time of the explosion, the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN)verified 12 lightning strikes within 10 miles of the mine, including several above the gob. After the 1994 explosion, the damaged seals were rebuilt using an acceptable seal design capable of with standing a 20-psi explosion, as required by 30 CFR 75.335. On January 26,1996, a second gob explosion destroyed five more cementitious pumpable seals less than 2,000 ft away from those destroyed in 1994and even closer to the steel-cased wells. The NLDN verified72 lightning strikes in the area of this second gob explosion. Compressive strength analyses of fragments from the destroyed seals showed that strengths ranged from 11 to 138 psi, with an average of83 psi. This is over 100 psi below the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement for cementitious pumpable seals. These seals were again replaced. On July 9, 1997, the third and most violent explosion occurred in the same vicinity of the last two explosions. Three more cementitious pumpable seals were destroyed, including one newer seal that exceeded the minimum 200-psi compressive strength requirement. This paper , which describes the mining methods and practices at the Hayden Creek lead mine of St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeast Missouri , is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts of the United States . The Hayden Creek mine is in the W 1/2 sec . 7 , T. 36 N. , R. 4 E. , St. Francois County , Mo. , about 1 mile southwest of the town of Frankclay ( fig . 1) . The mine is on the west edge of the mining district known as the Lead Belt . However , neither the ore body nor the underground workings are connected with those of any other mine in the district . In contrast with most operations in the district , underground haulage is entirely trackless , and nearly complete delineation of the large , well -defined ore body by drilling permitted comprehensive planning of development and mining in advance of shaft sinking . The ore differs in character and occurrence from that of the main ore deposits in the Lead Belt in that the lead mineral , galena , occurs in the dolomitic matrix enclosing granite boulders instead of in dolomite limestone .

The operation of combustion engines of various types at high altitudes and other combustion processes at reduced pressures have made it desirable to determine limits of flammabilities -under these conditions. Experiments carried out by the Bureau of Mines have shown that although natural gas-air mixtures become more difficult to ignite as the pressure is reduced below atmospheric, with a suitable source of ignition the limits of flammability are as wide at 175 mm mercury absolute as they are at atmospheric pressure.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrologic monitoring system for in situ leaching operations. This system records and displays flow and pressure information from sensors located in leachant injection and recovery wells. Continuous monitoring of hydrologic conditions is important during leaching operations because hydrologic factors such as aquifer permeability, solution injection rates, injection pressure, and solution recovery rates interact and change over time. This hydrologic monitoring system has been tested in an underground setting at the Cyprus Casa Grande copper mine. The system consists of hardware and computer software components and includes two Bureau-developed software applications. This publication describes the implementation of the hydrologic monitoring system and the software developed at the Bureau in support of in situ leaching research.

Knowledge of risks from exposure to hand-arm vibrations is usually presented by clinicians and researchers from a medical and engineering point of view. There is a strong need to develop innovative health promotion programs for exposed workers. Risk perceptions by vibration exposed workers and HAVS (hand-arm vibration syndrome) affected workers are less well known. In 1983, Brubaker demonstrated that 75% of studied fellers thought that whitening of the fingers was part of the job and/or an unrelated nuisance, while only 25% believed it was a disease. 1Grounds also showed that even though there were a very high number of forestry workers with white fingers, none considered quitting because of their condition. 2 It seems that many workers hesitate to declare the illness or believe they are less affected than they really are, perhaps from fear of losing their jobs and livelihood. 3 Risk awareness, on the part of exposed workers and their employers, as well as knowledge and acceptance of available preventive solutions are necessary steps before installing adequate preventive measures, whether organizational, behavioral or environmental. Workers need to understand fully the hazards and risks in order to be able to make informed decisions under uncertain conditions.4 Prerequisites include the following: workers knowledge about the risk, their attitude towards it, which in turn, can be influenced by values, needs and interests. Also, knowledge and attitudes towards safety behaviour, organizational or environmental barriers must be taken into account. Our research focuses on these key elements, which help bridge the gap between health promotion research and practice. Methods A descriptive exploratory study is in progress with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations. It uses qualitative methods that include focus group discussions with workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations, as well as individual interviews with other key informants (employers, health care professionals). An open-ended questionnaire was developed to collect qualitative data on perceived risks and solutions to prevent or reduce HAVS. Based on an integrated theoretical framework related to known determinants of behavior change, the analysis will focus on the following5: 1) knowledge of health effects, safety, well-being and/or quality of life 2) related beliefs about individual susceptibility and severity of consequences 3) attitude and values related to hand-arm vibration exposure 4) knowledge and attitudes towards exposure reduction, as well as perceptions of barriers and facilitating factors for these measures, in the workplace environment or otherwise.

The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a systematic evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of combustion gases. These studies were designed to provide basic thermodynamic information of high accuracy, facilitating the theoretical study of flame and combustion phenomena.4 This report is the fifth of a series5/ presenting results of the study for particular fuel-oxidant systems. These calculations have as their objective the constant pressure flame temperature of acetylene-air for a range of pressures.

The South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim arc to varying-degrees just beginning to achieve significant economic and industrial development. These countries are richly endowed with certain mineral resources, and development of these resources is being accelerated. In 1965, the mineral industry remained a relatively small sector of the region's economy, accounting for only about 1 percent of its estimated gross national product of $62,528 million. Nevertheless, the estimated $630 million total value of minerals produced in South Asia during 1965 represented an increase of nearly 15 percent t over that of 1964. India continued as the dominant mineral producer of the region, accounting for 85 percent of the total value of all minerals produced ill 1965. India increased its output of iron ore, manganese, mica, coal, and petroleum. Pakistan accounted for 13 percent of the value of the region's output and recorded increased output of iron ore, chromite, coal, natural gas, and most other minerals. The small mineral industry of Ceylon attained remarkable growth in the production of ilmenite, graphite, and gem stones. The mineral industry of Afghanistan remained relatively insignificant, although development of large known resources of natural gas was continued, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim produced no commercially significant quantities of minerals in 1965.

The Ladd manganese deposits are in San Joaquin County, Calif., about 13 miles southwest of Tracy. The deposits are confined in two main areas of development, roughly about 1,700 feet apart horizontally, and known as the Ladd mine and Fabian mine, respectively. The deposits occur as interbedded lenses in the white cherts of the Franciscan formation. The ore minerals are bementite, rhodochrosite and psilomelane. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a development program was started. August 24, 1940, and completed on June 24, 1941. The Federal Geological Survey cooperated by mapping the geology and logging the drill cores. The program included road building, trenching, rehabilitating the mine workings, trenching underground excavation, sampling, and core drilling. The following pages mention the location, give a brief history, and note the physical features of +1-.1, district. Mine workings are sketched, the deposit is described and the plan of the project is noted. The work performed by the Bureau of Mines is explained in the concluding pages with a summary of the drill hole logs.

Sodium-aluminum and calcium-aluminum silicates are important rock-forming minerals. While many of them are of only theoretical interest, several are of practical importance--as ceramic raw materials and as potential future sources of aluminum. Heretofore, thermodynamic data for these minerals were incomplete; and in many instances missing data were difficult to estimate reliably. This has seriously hampered thermodynamic calculations pertaining both to the natural formations of these minerals and to their decomposition in sintering and fluxing reactions. This paper reports the results of the Federal Bureau of Mines measurements of low-temperature heat capacities of four crystalline silicate minerals--dehydrated analcite (NaAlSi2O6), hexagonal anorthite (CaA12 Si208), lawsonite (Ca2Al2Si2080?2H20), and leonhardite (Ca2Al4Si8C24?7H2O). It augments previous similar measurements of related minerals, which were summarized recently.4 The measured heat-capacity data were used to derive entropy values for the four minerals at 298.15° K. Some relations between these entropy values and those of other similar minerals were discussed. These relations illustrate the difficulty of estimating entropy values of tertiary (or higher) silicates.

1. The major sources of heavy metal ions in wastewaters of the Coeur d'Alene Mining District are effluents from metallurgical processing plants. Effluents from mine operations provide a secondary source for heavy metal ions. Based on data analyzed by the Federal Water Quality Administration, mercury and arsenic are escaping from some mill waste ponds, but they are in the suspended phase. 2. Metallurgical process effluents are combined with mine waste effluents in tailings ponds, consequently, the quality of the tailings pond decant water is highly degraded. The major effect of combining metallurgical process effluents with mill wastes is a drastic change of pH in the tailings pond. This chance may be an increase or a decrease depending on the metallurgical process. The effluent from an electrolytic antimony plant drastically increases the pH in the tailings pond permitting the removal in solution of antimony via the pond decant system. The addition of low pH effluents to the tailings ponds results in a net decrease in pH which makes lead, zinc, cadmium, and copper more soluble, thereby permitting their removal from the pond via the decant system.

Primary standard gas mixtures were developed for more accurate calibration of analytical instruments at the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center and for calibration of analytical instruments used in the helium conservation program. A 10-kg-capacity balance is used to weigh a 4-kg metal cylinder filled to high pressure (1,800 psi maximum) with the component gases of the desired mixture. At 1,800 psi, a cylinder contains about 60 g of helium, or 420 g of nitrogen. An accuracy of ±0.05 mole-percent or better is claimed for each component in the mixtures.

The mineral asbestos, because of its unique fibrous character, is allied to cotton and wool but has the advantage of heat and fire resistance; therefore, it supplies many industrial needs for which no substitutes are yet available. This report covers the essential features of the asbestos industry, including occurrence, production, mining, milling, utilization, international trade, and marketing. The United States leads all countries in the manufacture of asbestos products, but domestic sources furnish only a small fraction of the raw material required. As the United States is dependent to so great an extent on foreign supplies of raw materials, the bulletin deals at length with the asbestos industry in foreign lands. Several reports now available deal with the industry in individual countries. Among them are Chrysotile Asbestos in Canada, by J. G. Ross; Asbestos in the Union of South Africa, by A. L. Hall; and a series of articles on the Russian industry, by Walter A. Ru Keyser. These have been drawn upon freely, and full acknowledgment is hereby made for the helpful information thus secured. The file of the magazine Asbestos also has furnished many valuable data touching all phases of the industry. Many other books and articles listed in the bibliography at the end of this bulletin have been utilized and have been supplemented by the author's intimate acquaintance with the industry for about 20 years. The intent is to present a concise, world-wide, historical, technical, and economic treatment of the asbestos industry.

In 2006, a total of 280 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.9% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.8% (n=131) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were copper ore (n=34; 12.1%), and iron ore (n=33; 11.8%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=53; 18.9%), followed by Alaska (n=31; 11.1%).

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) defines an independent contractor as any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine. Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines.

"The Bureau of Mines was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve material resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting those industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and· approved February 25, 1913, made it the province, and duty of the Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate· information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue of the Bureau of Mines List of Publications and Articles describes reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1990, to December 31,1991. The Bureau of Mines surveyed unit trainloading and storage installations in the midwestern, eastern, and southeastern coalfields. Nine individual operations were studied in detail as a representative cross section of unit train operations in these areas. Of the nine operations studied, three were in Illinois, two in Kentucky, and one each in West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Information was obtained from coal producers, coal sale agencies, railroads, construction and equipment companies, and power companies.
