"The X-ray method of quantitative determination is advantageous because it permits determination of compounds rather -than ions or elements; for example, the direct determination of quartz in silicates,4/,5/,6/ The method also takes into account the finest particles of a sample, which may be lost in wet chemical methods because of solubility or in petrographic methods because of limitation of the microscope. The sample is usually reduced to a powder and is easily prepared,7/ only a few milligrams of material being necessary. The sample and its chemical composition are not destroyed and may be used for further analysis by X-ray diffraction or by other methods.This paper presents in detail some of the more essential problems that arise in the application of X-ray diffraction to quantitative chemical analysis, Photometric measurements are discussed in connection with line intensities and the choice of X-ray film. The internal standard method, successfully used in spectrographic analysis, is applied.Copper K-alpha X-rays from a demountable research-type X-ray tube were used with a camera of 20 centimeters radius with a cast-lead-slit collimating system. A combination of a tilted wedge and a lead-slit collimating system permitted irradiation of a large amount of sample with X-rays. This tended to minimize errors due to possible inhonogeneity of the sample, to decrease the time of exposure, and to keep the lines on the X-ray film to a minimum width. There was sufficient dispersion of the lines for satisfactory analysis of most samples. Power was furnished the tube by a. source of constant high potential consisting of a synchronous motor generator furnishing 500-cycle power to a 100-kv. transformer, rectifying valves, and a condenser filter circuit. The X-ray tube was operated as a gas-type tube at 35 kv, and 20 ma,, the exposure times varying from 1 to 2 hours. The constant output of X-rays from the tube, indicated bar an exposure meter built for the purpose, was satisfactory.The recording microphotometer8/has been described. It was found preferable to a nonrecording instrument for measuring blackening of lines above a background on X-ray films. This background, which usually occurs, is sometimes complicated by numerous peaks from lines of complex diffraction patterns. is microphotometer record of the pattern, therefore, facilitates the location of the background 'and the measurement of the heights of the peaks and thus contributes to the accuracy of a determination."

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. Ramani of The Pennsylvania State University.The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Program. A guide to the development and use of an APL computer program for the analysis of load-flow problems is presented. The program is designed to provide an interactive method of load-flow study to improve underground coal mine electrical system design and safety. The theoretical basis for load-flow analysis is discussed, along with per-unit calculations which facilitate computation. Specific input/output, execution and network modification procedures are presented for using the APL program. In addition, typical results are given for examples taken from power system analysis literature.

Fibered, portland-cement-based gunite products were applied in the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine using a variety of pneumatic guns and gunning crews, The demonstrated wet-mix (with silica fume), dry-mix, and surface bonding products were sampled by the Bureau and subjected to a suite of engineering analyses. Gunite flexural and compressive strength, rebound, permeability, porosity, dust loading, shooting rate, crew requirements, and cost factors were evaluated. Steel, fiberglass, or polypropylene fibers were contained in all but two of the gunires tested. Both Bureau and private testing laboratory analyses are provided for some products. Electron probe micro-analysis and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed on the silica fume fraction of the wet-mix gunite to characterize the dust. Aggregate size fraction distribution analyses were performed to provide strength relationships. Results indicate that all of the commercially available fibered-gunite materials tested can provide beneficial sealant, spall prevention, or roof stability control attributes for underground mining environments when applied by an experienced crew using a well-maintained gun, in accordance with product manufacturers' recommendations and when used for the designated purpose.

This research program was conducted to determine if respirable coal dust emanating from a continuous mining machine can be suppressed more effectively by a high expansion foam than by the water sprays conventionally used. A high expansion foam system was developed and tested on a continuous mining machine under actual operating conditions. The utility of the system was demonstrated. Test results tend to show that foam application is more effective than water sprays in suppressing respirable coal dust. However, because of the extreme variability of the test conditions, scatter in the sampling data, and other factors, not enough data was obtained to form a firm conclusion that foam is more efficient than a water spray in suppressing respirable coal dust. Sufficient statistical data was obtained, however, to indicate that foam is more efficient than water in suppressing total float coal dust.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu codeposited. Decreasing Cu codeposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.070 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave electrowinning at 70° C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 to 0.1µg/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 to 0.2 µg/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µg/mL.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research on calcium ferrite slags to determine the distribution of Pb and minor elements (Ag, Cd, Zn, and Co) between Pb bullion and slag. These fundamental data are required to evaluate nonferrous smelting with calcium ferrite slags as a substitute for conventional iron silicate slags. Determinations were made in 25-cm3-capacity MgO crucibles at 1,250° C for 2 h in a CO-CO2 atmosphere with an O2 potential that would retard the formation of magnetite. Calcium ferrite slag composition variables studied were from 16 to 32 wt pct CaO in 2-pct increments and Si02 ranging from 1 to 5 wt pct in 1-pct increments with equal additions of MgO. For all compositions studied, the retention of Pb in the calcium ferrite slag was less than 1 wt pct, which compares favorably to about 6 wt pct Pb in conventional iron silicate slags used in smelting of Pb concentrates. Minor element distribution was insensitive to changes in slag composition in the range studied. However, slag composition had significant impact on the melting and fluidity of the slag.

Pilot-plant tests have been in progress at the Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, Pa., on the recovery of manganese from open-hearth slag.3/4/5/ In the process, 1 the slag is first reduced in a blast furnace to make a high-phosphorus spiegeleisen containing 12 to 22 percent manganese. A slag containing 55 to 60 percent manganese is made from this spiegel by oxidation in a basic-lined converter. The metal from this blowing operation contains about 3 percent phosphorus, 1 percent manganese, and less than 1 percent carbon. Economic efficiency in the manganese-recovery process requires that this metal be converted into steel. Because of its high phosphorus content the metal is suitable for blowing in a basic-lined converter. In most of the tests described in this report, metal of this composition was used as the starting material in a 1-ton, side-blown, basic-lined converter. Although basic-lined converters are not used for steel production in the United states, in Europe a considerable portion of the steel is made in them. Open hearths largely have replaced converters for steelmaking in the United States; mainly because open-hearth steels have better physical properties than converter steels because of lower nitrogen and phosphorus contents. However, by improving converter design and operating technique during the past 15 years, metallurgists have found that low-nitrogen steels with physical properties equal to open-hearth steels can be produced in converters.6/ Tests at Jones & Laughlin steel Corp. with side-blown, acid-lined converters of 3 and 22 tons capacity showed that steel with a low nitrogen content comparable to that of open hearths operating on scrap charges could be made by surface blowing.7/

"INTRODUCTION The district comprising Union, Lafayette, Pontotoc and Calhoun Counties, Miss. (fig. 1), was examined in October 1941 by R. W. Smith of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by J. W. Adams of the Mississippi Bauxite Co. 3/ Subsequently, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey made a more detailed study of the area. 4/Bauxite had been reported as present in several localities in Pontot. County, and large deposits of kaolin are known in Pontotoc, Union, Calhoun, and Lafayette Counties. Many of the bauxite deposits, such as those on Big Hill, Second Hill, and Third Hill, in Pontotoc County, form the caps on hills and are outliers of Wilcox deposits on the Midway formation. Such deposits could have no extensions because of erosion and were not examined, as they were investigated by the Mississippi Geological Survey. 5/ Most of the bauxite was known to be low-grade, with a high iron content. However, Pontotoc County in particular presented possibilities of finding high-grade bauxite with a low iron content by drilling down the dip from the Wilcox-Midway contact. Consequently, with few exceptions the investigation was confined to drilling in this direction.Headquarters were established in Tupelo, Miss., on July 13, 1943, and mineral agreements were obtained covering 8,367 acres of land, with 62 land-owners in Pontotoc and Union Counties. Holes were drilled on properties of three of the landowners in Union County and 36 in Pontotoc County."

Introduction Industrial exposure to whole-body vibration is associated with injury and discomfort. Certain industries, notably mining, construction, and forestry, involve complex 6 degrees of freedom vibration. Laboratory-based studies of vibration are essential for controlled and systematic evaluation of the human responses to vibration2. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate whether the duration of the vibration exposure, and rest between vibrations, significantly influence the subjective ratings of comfort during laboratory-based studies of vibration. Methods Subjects: The cumulative vibration dose was calculated, and was below the health guidance caution zone recommended by International standards3. The experimental procedures were approved by the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Ten adult subjects participated in this pilot experiment. All subjects completed the entire experimental paradigm; no subjects complained of pain during or after the experiment. Experimental Design: The experiment consisted of four blocks of vibration exposures; either 15 or 20 seconds of vibration (1 df:Z axis, 3 df:XY plane, 3df:YZ plane, or 6 df) alternating with either 5 or 10 seconds rest. The order of presentation of the four blocks was randomized. Each of the blocks was composed of 37 individual sinusoidal vibration exposures in randomized sequence. This abstract focused on ten identical trials, (6.3 Hz vertical vibration, 0.55 m/s2 RMS) interspersed within each block, in order to assess whether the subjects’ comfort ratings systematically varied between the 15 or 20 vibration exposures, the 5 or 10 second rest between vibrations, or within each block. The experiment involved 43 minutes of vibration within the 62 minute experiment. Vibration Apparatus: A commercial parallel robotic platform was used to apply the specific vibration exposures (R2000, Parallel Robotics Systems Corporation, Hampton, New Hampshire). The subjects sat on a passenger seat from a 1992 Honda Accord that was rigidly mounted to the robotic platform (Figure 1). This robotic system performed the specific vibration exposures operating under closed-loop displacement control. A custom-written Matlab program automated the testing sequence.

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. This later program was initiated in July 1942 and was completed in May 1943. 4/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilisation of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. An oil-field drilling campaign is used in this paper to signify the spacing of the wells to be drilled as well as the drilling program, which is interpreted as the number of wells drilled in a unit of time, This has an important bearing upon the time of receiving income, as well as upon the amount of revenue obtained In periods of low prices for oil, such as the present, the margin of profit is at the best very small, and the correct determination of the drilling campaign may be the deciding factor between incurring financial loss or gain during the depressed period. General policy of the operator. Drilling should be planned by the field engineer to conform with the general policy of the operator. This policy may be one of conservation daring the early life of the property, but as mentioned later, this may result in a smaller ultimate recovery it often occurs that the market price of oil does not warrant rapid development, or it may be desirable to hold in reserve a supply of oil for a refinery. The policy may be to recover all of the oil as quickly as possible, or it may be to maintain a constant and sustained production. In any case, the operator should, outline as far as possible a definite policy, and should understand the principles underlying the recovery of oil, the influence of rapidity of drilling and effects of spacing, in order that he may obtain the oil as required with the least expenditure.

Between 1990 and 1991, the Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of the Kaibab National Forest to appraise the resources present and to determine the types of deposits, and their location. The study included a comprehensive literature search and a limited amount of field investigation of minerals and mining activity in and near the Forest. Small amounts of copper with lesser amounts of gold and silver have been produced from limestone-hosted, strata-bound deposits in the North Kaibab and Tusayan Ranger Districts. In addition to these small metallic deposits, volcanic cinders, pumice, flagstone, and sand and gravel have been quarried in the Chalendar and Williams Ranger Districts. At least ten uranium-mineralized breccia pipes have been identified in the Tusayan Ranger District, One of these, the Canyon pipe, contains a high-grade uranium ore body with associated silver, copper, lead, vanadium, and zinc. The mine permit for the Canyon pipe has been approved and the mine shaft head frame erected.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYElectricity is used extensively in open-pit metal mines to provide illumination, heat, and power to operate hauling and loading equipment, drills, pumps, signal systems, and other machinery. Good installation and maintenance of equipment and power, circuits, are essential to minimize the hazards of shock, burns, and fire.In the 13 years from 1931 to 1943, 20 fatal and 82 nonfatal injuries resulted from the use of electricity in open-pit mines in the United States ; 4/ these figures represent about, 10 percent of all fatalities and 1 percent of the nonfatal injuries. The ratio of fatal to nonfatal injuries from electricity in such mines was very high during this period; the figures show one fatality to every five accidents from this cause.Electricity may cause personal injury through abnormalities in equipment, such as short-circuit, accidental ground, overload, and poor contact; however, each year some fatal electrical accidents are due to persons touching uninsulated ""live wires."" These contact injuries are the result of careless body movements of persons in the vicinity of 'wires at places not normally frequented, or of accidental contact with live circuits when handling metal objects. Electrical hazards can be minimized by the enclosure or elevation of current-carrying parts; ample working space around equipment, adequate insulation, locking switches in the open or closed position under certain conditions, identifying and warning devices, protective grounding, insulating flooring, platforms, or rubber gloves, and proper inspection and maintenance."

The value of mineral production in-creased 13% in 1977. Nearly all commodities registered an increase in production and value, continuing a trend that started in 1976. In addition, practically all commodities registered an increase in unit value. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble, was second in bauxite and scrap mica third in kaolin and oyster shell, and fourth in bentonite, dimension marble, and fire clay.

As part of its mission, the U.S. Bureau of Mines continues to develop technologies that will enable cost-effective compliance with environmental requirements. To this end, investigations to improve the kinetics of chalcopyrite dissolution by simultaneous grinding-leaching in ferric sulfate solution were conducted using the Bureau-designed turbo mill. The development of such a hydrometallurgical process would provide a nonpolluting alternative to conventional smelter technology. The effects of mill rotational speed and volume percent solids on the leaching time and energy required for copper extraction from chalcopyrite were evaluated. The results of this laboratory study have shown that the simultaneous grinding-leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate using the turbomill is technically feasible with essentially 100 pet extraction of copper being possible at 90° C. An optimal energy consumption of 1,153 kW?h/st of copper leached was found in batch testing with the mill operating at 400 rpm with a slurry containing 35 vol pet chalcopyrite. This energy consumption, while higher than other proposed leaching processes (about 600 kW?h/st), is of the same order of magnitude. Further refinement of the energy requirements would require additional testing using a continuous circuit. Leaching times of less than 1 h, for 80 pct copper extraction, are achievable using the turbomill grind-leach process.

This Bureau of Mines report is an applications manual that can be used by the nonmetallic mining industry for guidance in installing noise control materials into crushing and screening plants. These noise control modifications were installed and successfully tested at three operating quarries. This report identifies the major noise sources that can be encountered in crushing and screening plants, and discusses the applicable noise control materials and techniques that a plant operator can utilize on a retrofit basis to reduce equipment noise.

In the fall of 1946 and spring of 1947 the Bureau of Mines put down five inclined diamond-drill holes totaling about 3,100 feet of bore to test for the possible eastward extension of the Royal Princess ore deposit in Jo Daviess County, Ill. Attention of the .Bureau was first directed to this property by the Illinois State Geological Survey. The history of production of the Royal. Princess mine and reports as to the size and nature of the deposit were considered justification for investigating the trend of the mineralization. This report describes the work done by the Bureau of Mines and presents the data obtained.

The investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram was part of a program to investigate rare:earth alloys for use as nuclear reactor control materials. Investigation of the zirconium-gadolinium equilibrium diagram revealed a eutectic system with limited terminal solubilities and one peritectoid reaction. The eutectic composition occurs at about 82 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 1,220 ±5° C., extends from about 12 to 99+ percent gadolinium. A peritectoid isotherm occurs at 890 ±5° C. and extends from about 2 to 99+ percent gadolinium. The solubility of gadolinium in beta zirconium decreases from about 12 percent at 1,220 ±5° C. to about 2 percent at 890 ±5° C. The solubility of gadolinium in alpha zirconium decreases from approximately 5 percent at 890 ±5° C. to between 2 and 3 percent at 600° C. Vary little solubility of zirconium in gadolinium was indicated. An allotropic transformation of gadolinium was observed at 1,260 ±5° C. A change of the gadolinium transformation temperature on alloying with zirconium was not observed.
