"This paper presents an analysis of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture surface in coal cutting using a rotary coal cutting simulator. Coal cutting by a drum type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory. A series of tests along both the face and butt cleat direction of coal under different operating and in-situ conditions were performed. In each experiment the cut surface was photographed microscopically and the coal cuttings were collected and sized. Data were used to show how and to what extent various parameters effect size distribution of the coal cutting and how this correlates with the characteristics of the fracture surface. This study resulted in establishing a number of distinct correlations between the size distribution and fracture surface. These correlations were primarily based on the degree of interaction between adjacent bits and the amount of bit-coal interaction taking place on the cutting path. Some of the major results of this study are as follows:Zones of bit-coal interactions proved vital toward understanding the effect the conical bit has on the fragmentation process. This in turn led to the identification of areas which are responsible for the production of fines and generation of respirable dust.The various parameters employed in the coal cutting experiments which showed a strong effect on the coal fragment size distribution were: bit type, bit spacing, depth of cut, in-situ stresses, and cleat orientation. Bit angle and cutting head velocity exhibited the least effect and no correlation was established.From this study it is obvious that the key to achieving efficient coal fragmentation is to limit the degree of bit-coal interaction that takes place throughout the bit path while causing maximum interaction between adjacent bits. Accomplishing this not only increases the percentage of large fragments produced but limits the amount of secondary crushing that takes place in the bit path thus resulting in decreasing fines and consequently, the amount of respirable dust generated.Over 2,000 continuous mining machines (introduced in the 1950's) equipped with conical bits or point attach bits account for well over half of the United States' production from underground coal mines. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to coal market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis upon increasing production, efficiency and health/safety of the workers. Mine operators are always interested in finding the most efficient performance of continuous mining machinery to produce the largest amount of size of coal at the lowest cost. An increase of fine material sent to the cleaning plant can seriously overload the plant to the extent that plant efficiencies deteriorate significantly (1). Also, the difficulty and expense of cleaning very small particles often cannot be done economically and thus, thousands of tons of coal are sent to the refuse pile because of costly or ineffective cleaning facilities. It has been said, ""the efficient extraction of coal or rock implies breakage into a size range that contains a minimum quantity of very small sizes"" (2). All known fragmentation theories concur that more fragmentation requires more energy (3). Because trade increased among various nations after World War II, the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe established a Classification Working Party in 1949 to develop an International system for classifying coal. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed in accordance with characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Terms for describing similar or identical coals differed in each nation. This caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade and also hampered exchange of technical information on problems of coal utilization. Experts4/ participating in the classification project early in their work agreed that two systems should be formulated, one for the higher rank coals or so-called "hard" coals in European terminology and the other one for the lower rank coals, the latter designated mainly as brown coals and lignites in the various countries. Rank refers to the degree of metamorphism (progressive alteration) in the natural coalification series from lignite and brown coal to anthracite. The system for classification of hard coals was published late in 1956 as a document of the United Nations.5/ Results of a study for applying this system to American coals were published in 1958.6/

"INTRODUCTION Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations covered by this report show that ores from Montgomery County, Ark., and Morgan County, Mo., are potential sources of barite and zinc. Fine grinding and froth flotation yielded drilling-grade barite from the former and chemical-grade barite and zinc concentrates from the latter.Samples from these deposits were subjected to a laboratory investigation to develop an economic and feasible treatment. The Arkansas ore, submitted by the Husky Refining Co., consisted of an intimate mixture of the economic mineral and quartz. Fine grinding and fatty acid flotation were utilized to effect a good recovery of a drilling-grade product. The other was a zinc-barite ore submitted by the Rocky Ford Mining Co., Stover, Mo. There was no problem in the recovery of zinc (most of which occurred as sphalerite), but the recovery of barite by flotation was complicated by the presence of gangue carbonates. Ultimately, an excellent recovery of barite was achieved with a relatively new type of flotation promoter, petroleum sulfonate.In recent years, barite has become one of the major industrial minerals as an essential ingredient in heavy drilling fluids, pigments, and chemicals. New sources of this important commodity are always interesting; thus, it is the purpose of this report to present information that may permit commercial exploitation of two deposits not in production."

"The Phelps lease in Jasper County, Missouri, was first examined by the Bureau of Mines3/ in December 1943, at the request of Thomas Phelps of Joplin, the lessee. Owing to urgent war requirements for zinc and lead and evidence of favorable geological conditions and past productivity of adjoining properties, it,considered justifiable to explore for extensions of known ore deposits and possible undiscovered ones. In August 1944, funds were allotted for this work, which was started January 5, 1945, under the direction of the author.The provision of facilities and storage space on the property by the lessee during drilling operations is gratefully acknowledged.The Phelps lease is on land belonging to the Rex Mining & Smelting Co. It lies immediately southeast of the city limits of Joplin, Mo. It may be reached by going cast from Joplin on paved 20th street to half a mile beyond Range Line road. Twentieth street is the northern boundary line of the property, which consists of approximately 145 acres and includes the W 1/2, NE1/4, and all of the E ½. NW1/4 except 15 acres along the west side of that quarter section, of sec. 18, T. 27 N., R. 32 W., as shown on figure 1.The property is part of a 1,000-acre tract owned by the Rex Mining & Smelting Co., Paul D. Porter, president, Joplin, Mo. The lease was acquired by Thomas Phelps of Joplin, in 1937. At present the lease is controlled by a recently formed association known as the Eureka Products Co., Charles W. Madison, manager, Kansas City, Mo.Dependable skilled mine labor is scarce in the district at present, but there seems to be enough transient mine labor for small operations. The prevailing wages of the district run from 55 cents to 95 cents per hour for various types of mine labor.Living accommodations and markets to supply all domestic requirements are available in Joplin.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the and that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director."

This report deals with upgrading of the coal reserves of Raleigh County, VI. Va., to metallurgical standards. The data on samples herein correctly show the characteristics of the bed at the point where sampled and are used to indicate the general quality of the bed in the county. The principal results and conclusions are: 1. Raleigh County contains large reserves of high-quality, high-, medium-, and low-volatile coals. 2. The principal beds from which an increased amount of coal is expected to be mined in the future are: The Eagle, Powellton, No. 5 Block, Hernshaw, Fire Creek, and Pocahontas No.6.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, developed the property of the Tungsten Metals Corp. by surface trenching and diamond drilling from November 1940 to June 1941 and from August 1943 to December 1943. The purpose of the work was to determine possible reserves of tungsten in the downward extension and lateral eastern extension of three major tungsten-bearing quartz veins. The property is 50 miles south of Ely, White Pine County, Nev., in the Minerva Mining District. Tungsten ore was discovered in the district in 1915, and mining started in 1916. The tungsten ore bodies occur as shoots in quartz veins that occur along faults in limestone. With the exception of a small-scale leasing operation in 1932, the property was idle from 1919 until 1936, when Tungsten Metals Corp. was organized to acquire the mines. Production ceased in May 1945, and the mines were idle until leased in 1947. Development by the Bureau of Mines during 1940 and 1941 consisted of surface trenching, sampling, and diamond drilling 37 holes for a total of 6,959 feet. Subsequent drilling of eight holes, totaling 3,067 feet, in 1943 disclosed additional reserves. This report sets forth in considerable detail the exploration work completed by the Bureau and briefly describes the mining and milling methods employed. Diamond-drill halo logs and sample analyses are shown graphically in the illustrations that accompany the report.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

This report describes results of laboratory-scale experimental treatment of nine ores containing gold and silver, including samples of products of previous plant treatment, from ore deposits in California and Nevada. The samples treated were taken by engineers of the Bureau of Mines during investigations of these ore deposits. The information reported is of interest for development of the mining districts represented or in future Investigations of similar ores from other sources. The treatment methods were as simple as possible. More complicated treatments were tried when required, The applicability of the methods and their limitations in treating the ores are shown by the data in this report. The following treatment methods were employed in the experiments described: Screen analyses were made to determine distribution of values in various screened-sized portions of crushed ore, or to determine optimum size to which a particular ore should be crushed or ground to liberate values, and some-times to determine residual values in various-sized portions of treated material.

"INTRODUCTION Molybdenite, the only common mineral and ore of molybdenum, occurs wide¬-spread but is concentrated as the main ore mineral in commercial quantities in only a few known deposits. Consequently, the Government sought additional sources of the minerals as a precaution against the possible shortage of moylbdenm for war uses. Upon request by the War Production Board, the New Year’s Eve and Esperanza properties of the Amargosa Molybdenum & Copper Corp. were investigated by the Geological Survey 3/ and the bureau of Mines 4/. The Survey appraised the mineral potentialities of the deposit and prepared topographic and geologic maps, and the Bureau made a preliminary engineering examination. The deposits were previously examined by W. J. Vanderwilt, consulting engineer. It was largely due to his recommendations that interest was stimulated in the deposits.Development on the New Year’s Eve deposit indicated a small tonnage of sub marginal ore. There was little development at the Esperanza, but surface examination revealed a large volume of rock containing a little molybdenite and a trace of copper in the oxidized outcrops. Some molybdic oxide was noted suggesting that some molybdenite might have been leached from the oxidized outcrops and that the molybdenite content in the sulfide zone might be higher."

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The tactual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the twelfth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate halt-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that halt township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

From studies of wrought magnesium alloys containing rare-earth elements, data are presented on the mechanical properties of the alloys at room temperature and at temperatures of 100°, 200°, and 300° C. Results of studies of the solid-solubility of cerium and zirconium in magnesium as determined by electrical resistance measurements are also discussed and are compared with those of other investigators. The strength of magnesium-cerium alloys did not increase with the addition of vanadium and titanium dioxide. The addition of zirconium increased the tensile strength of the alloys as much as 10,000 p.s.i. at room temperature, but this increase diminished above 100° C.

Much has been published by various investigators on the use of activated carbon for adsorbing precious metals from cyanide solution and pulp. For the benefit of the reader, a list of these earlier publications appears at the end of this report. The present paper deals only with a process for extracting gold from gold-laden carbon and re-use of the de-adsorbed carbon. At the Getchell mine, Redhouse, Nev., experiments have been in progress for several years concerning the use of activated carbon to adsorb gold from their slime circuit pulp. The experimental work has been successful. Their practice has been to ship the gold-laden carbon to a smelter for treatment, which meant the total loss of the carbon in addition to smelter and freight, charges, all of which proved costly and wasteful.

"This report describes an examination and preliminary exploration of the Magnet Cove Rutile Co. property in Hot Spring County, Ark. The company in 1944 was producing titania for use in-the welding-rod and metallurgical industries but later ceased operations. The deposit appeared to contain potential reserves of rutile ore, and the Bureau of lanes in 1945 conducted an examination designed (1) to obtain samples for ore-dressing tests and (2) to gather information regarding the grade, character, and size of the deposit. This report presents the data obtained by geologic mapping, geophysical surveying, churn drilling, and core drilling. Beneficiation tests are being made at the Bureau of Mines Rolla, No. station, on the samples taken and will be discussed in a later report.The Magnet Cove operation had been called to the attention of the Bureau of Mines, and in view of the potential reserve of titanium-bearing material, it was decided to obtain samples for ore-dressing tests. Churn drilling was selected as a means of obtaining representative samples, and geologic mapping and geophysical surveying were done to throw more light on the nature of the deposit. Subsequently, a few holes were core-drilled.The property contains the NE1/4, W1/2 fractional NW1/4 and 82 acres of the N part of SE of sec. 18, and -29 acres of the SW1/4 NW1/4 sec. 17, all in T. 3 S., R. 17 W., Hot Spring County, Ark. The mine and mill are about 1 mile by graveled road northeast of U. S. Highway 270, a paved road connecting Malvern, 10 miles south and Hot Springs, 12 miles west. The area is served by two railroads, the Missouri Pacific, which passes through Malvern and Hot Springs and the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific,,has a line connecting Malvern and Hot Springs an passes about 2 miles south of the property. A natural-gas pipe line and an electric power line reach the property."

The importance of Somerset County, Pa., as a coal producer is due in large measure to the presence reserves of low-volatile bituminous coals. Although many coal beds of minable thickness are present, the important reserves are to be found in those beds underlying the Pittsburgh bed. The Kittenning beds and Freeport beds, which are responsible for the bulk of the present coal production in Somerset County and contain the largest reserves to meet future coal requirements, are usually thin and entirely free from impurities. The Pittsburgh bed, which has been such an important coal deposit in the coal areas immediately west and south of Somerset County, is of secondary importance in this county. Although generally rather friable, Somerset County coals have enjoyed wide receptability as excellent coals and to some extent have been utilized in the metallurgical market.

The cleaning of fine coal, particularly for metallurgical use, is receiving greater attention. An increase in the proportion of fine coal in the run-of-mine product has been created by changes in mining practice, and a concur-rent deterioration in the quality of the fines has occurred because of more widespread full-seam mining. These two factors, augmented by the depletion of premium beds of metallurgical coal in some areas and the resulting shift to "dirtier" beds, are providing the impetus for adoption of improved cleaning techniques. For example, froth flotation, which has been used for years in a few preparation plants, now is gaining more rapidly in acceptance. Similarly, the dense-medium cyclone, which is used widely in Europe for making difficult separations, recently has been introduced to the United States. Regardless of the cleaning process employed, the finer sizes of coal can be treated with maximum effectiveness only when they are removed from the run-of-mine product and treated separately. No present process can treat the full range of sizes together with complete effectiveness. Flotation is applicable only to the coal finer than a top size ranging between 14-and 48-mesh, and cyclones require removal of all material finer than 0.5 to 0.3 mm. from the feed. Thus, the trend toward more-effective cleaning of the fine coal imposes the attendant problem of fine screening. Whereas in the past there was little need to screen finer than about l/4-in., present developments indicate that fine screening will become increasingly prevalent.

The ignition problem: for a layer of firedamp bordering on a cloud of detonation products is evidently considerably more complicated than in the usual laboratory ignition experiments, in which a well-defined volume of gas is heated and the occurrence of ignition is observed after an induction period. An atmosphere of firedamp exposed to the detonation of a high explosive is subjected to heating by shock-wave compression and thermal conduction and to intermixing at the interface of the firedamp atmosphere and the cloud of deto¬nation products. Although a reliable physical-chemical analysis of the problem is not yet possible, one may nevertheless form a general view of the role of compression waves and the processes of heat transfer and diffusion at the interface. Near the mouth of a shot hole, or near a freely suspended cartridge, the firedamp atmosphere attains very high temperatures by adiabatic compression, and it is certain that such temperatures are sufficient to initiate chemical reaction. The pressure wave pattern is reproducible from one test charge to another if the initial experimental conditions are held constant; on the other hand, experiments on firedamp ignition do not yield a reproducible threshold condition for ignition, but only an ignition probability. Thus, the induction periods are sufficiently long that there is time for the compressed', heated gas layers to undergo random changes that may quench or promote ignition. Therefore, the analysis of the ignition problem hinges primarily on the discovery of the random events that modify the chemical reaction in the activated gas layers.

The room-and-pillar mining method is used extensively in underground limestone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. The rock mass is typically a near-horizontal, bedded deposit at relatively shallow depth. A survey of 34 mines was conducted in which data on roof spans, rock mass properties and support practices were collected as part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health research project into ground control in limestone mines. The average room width is 13.5 m (44 ft), accommodating large mechanized equipment. The results show that the immediate roof beam can consist of many individual layers and can contain several near-vertical joints. In spite of the room widths, the roof is naturally stable in many mines. Observed roof instabilities can generally be related to excessive horizontal stresses or unfavorable geological structures that cause block fallout or beam failure of the bedded roof rocks. The survey showed that the rock mass quality of the limestone does not vary significantly throughout the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. Roof conditions and the need for support were found to be closely related to the thickness and competence of the first layer of limestone in the roof. The findings highlight the need to identify local geological structures and the roof beam characteristics so that support alternatives can be evaluated. Monitoring and observational technologies that are available for identifying potentially unstable roof are presented, which include: roof characterization using the Rock Fall Risk Index, automated logging of roofbolt hole drilling, microseismic monitoring and displacement monitoring.

THIS PAPER is one of a series being pre¬pared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines describing, methods of mining and crushing and the costs of operation at commercial crushed-stone plants throughout the country. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators, as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating, costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. Surface fracture trace density, changes in roof rock type, and topographic unloading due to drainage were mapped for the mining areas located in the Blacksville-Osage, W. Va., quadrangles to investigate their influence on mine roof falls. Using these factors, a technique was developed to predict probable roof fall areas ahead of projected mining operations. As a feasibility test of this proposed technique, areas were delineated where one, two, and all three of these factors were operating to formulate a "potential hazard map" for comparison with roof fall observations that were made. The limited evidence suggests that in combination these factors are reliable predictors of where roof falls are likely to occur. This technique promises to be a useful tool in planning mining operations.
