This Bureau of Mines report delineates the coal reserve base of anthracite, bituminous and subbituminous coals, and lignite, by mining method and sulfur content, for coal-bearing States west of the Mississippi River. The parameters used to establish the reserve base definition are the result of a joint agreement by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. The reserve base of low-sulfur coal, =10 percent sulfur, is 167,324.5 million tons; medium-sulfur coal, 1.1-3.0 percent sulfur, is 37,531.5 million tons; and high-sulfur coal, >3.0 percent sulfur, is 11,244.1 million tons. The reserve base of coal with an unknown sulfur level is 18,323.0 million tons. The percentages of deep and strippable coal are 56 percent and 44 percent, respectively. The basis for reserve base estimates and analytical data for this report was the Fuels Availability System, a Bureau of Mines data bank containing numerous data tin fossil fuels. Information contained in the system was obtained from publications of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Geological Survey, State agencies, private publications, and company data.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The oil-producing district, "Southern Oklahoma," is generally considered to be that part of the: State lying southwest of the Arbuckle Mountains. It includes six counties: Cater, Cotton, Garvin, Jefferson, Kiowa, and Stephens. At present cost of the oil is produced from formations of Pennsylvanian age. The individual crude oils resemble those produced in other parts of the State, except that the sulfur content is rather high. This report is a continuation of a study of Oklahoma crude oils3/being made, by the Bureau of Mines, Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma. Analyses are given of 27 samples obtained from 21 fields in the southern part of the State, end the physical and chemical characteristics of these crude oils are discussed briefly. Analyses of crude oils from other Oklahoma areas and publications in which these analyses may be found are listed in tables 2 and 3.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United states was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United states Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gaso1ines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.3/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. "INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was mode under a co¬operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior.Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' production in their laboratories and the results sub¬mitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.SUMMARYA comparison of certain properties of the commercial aviation gasolines produced in the United States during 1950, 1951, and 1952 is presented in table 1, the 1952 data being average values from tables 3 through 7 of the present report. Trends in certain characteristics of these fuels may be seen in figures 1 through 5 which also indicate the minimum and maximum values. As may be observed, the properties of commercial aviation gasolines have not varied greatly during recent years. A list of aviation-fuel survey reports published by the Bureau of Mines is given on page 7.Table 2 presents a summary of data from table 8 and compares properties of aviation jet fuels of 1952 with summarized data on jet fuels of October 1951."

"INTRODUCTION The development of methods for determining the total quantity of crude oil that a given pool could be expected to produce in the future and the well-spacing and drilling programs most likely to result in the recovery of the maximum quantity of oil at the minimum cost became problems of acute concern to American oil producers and petroleum engineers during the second decade of the twentieth century, The United States faced what seemed at that time to be a serious shortage of petroleum, and it appeared that the constantly increasing demand for petroleum and its products could not be adequately supplied. Undrilled prospective acreage, which until then had been plentiful, seemed to be getting scarcer, competition was increasing, the margin of profit to the producer was shrinking, and the need for developing constructive policies of conservation appeared paramount. As a result of physical and economic changes then taking place within the petroleum industry prompted by the seemingly uncertain future, accurate knowledge pertaining to the probable future production of oil wells and of oil lands especially was needed and greatly desired. Furthermore, the need for obtaining the maximum quantity of oil from known fields caused technical information - which up to that time had not been deemed essential to the successful and profitable operation of oil lands - to be sought eagerly. The need for technical information, such as methods for determining future reserves of oil and the rate at which the oil could be obtained under a specific program of drilling, was emphasized further with the passage of the Revenue Act of 1918, and oil producers with enough income to place them in the taxable class were compelled, for the first time, to report their taxable income 4/ to the Treasury Department."

Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. .It presents analytical data for 4, 457 samples, representing the products of 92 companies. The samples were collected by companies during June, July, and August 1956, As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is on page 5.

"The number of underground work entities operating under reduced dust standards in U.S. coal mines has been increasing since the start of the decade of the 80s and is currently approaching 10,000. The concern for controlling the quartz levels in airborne respirable dust in coal mine has manifested itself in several improvements in equipment selection and operation, face ventilation practices, and dust control procedures. At the same time, fundamental studies have been initiated on determining the source-sink relationships of the airborne quartz dust. The P-7 method is the prescribed method for the determination of quartz in the respirable airborne dust samples from coal mines. Questions have been raised on the reliability of the P-7 infrared spectrometry method for quartz analysis in powders. No specific method has been defined for quartz determination in bulk samples from the mine.In a recent study on the relationship between quartz in the airborne dust and that in the materials being mined, both infrared (IR) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) methods were used on a suite of samples from several coal mines. These samples encompassed airborne respirable dust samples, airborne total dust samples, the oversize fraction from the respirable samplers, ROM samples, channel samples, and chip samples from the face, roof, and floor materials. In this paper, the sample preparation and analysis procedures for the samples are discussed. The data, analysis results, and comparisons of the P-7 and XRD results are presented. The quartz percent determined for the same sample by the two methods are different. In 85% of the samples analyzed, the quartz percents determined by the XRD method are higher than those obtained by the P-7 method. However, there is a strong linear relationship between the results from the two methods. Further, the XRD method indicates an average of 20 percent more quartz than that from the P-7 method. The reasons for the differences in the results and the need for additional studies are explored.Since the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, the prevalence of free silica as an occupational hazard in dusty work environments has been a matter of increasing concern. In underground coal mining, sometimes, roof, floor, clay veins and other non-coaly material must also be mined along with the coal. Mining these materials may increase the amount of quartz in the airborne dust (Pimentel and Adam, 1985; Taylor et al., 1984; Colinet et al., 1985). The problem of high quartz levels in the respirable airborne dust is widespread in continuous miner sections. In addition to the need for controlling the silica amount in mine atmosphere, a need for a sensitive, easily performed method for the determination of free silica in airborne dust samples was also recognized."

"INTRODUCTION There are presented in this report the results of limited studies by the Bureau of Mines of the firedamp safety of some powder-powered tools proposed for use underground in coal mines. This study was made to obtain general information and specific technical data for a cable splicer and some rail punches now commercially available, the aim being to keep abreast of developments and to anticipate hazards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgments are made to the Mine Safety Appliances Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., for supplying equipment for these tests, and to the Pittsburgh Coal Co. for making possible observations of the use of these tools in coal mines.The assistance of other members of the Explosives Division is acknowledged: J. These tools employ blank-cartridge ammunition and special projectiles to accomplish the work indicated by these descriptive names."

"The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

This is the eighth in a series of reports en properties of commercial meter fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C. F. R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data en meter gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report, covering 1,679 samples, represents the products of 118 companies plus these from the Pacific coast, which were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. The throe groups of data en samples of regular, premium, and third-grade gasolines arc averaged separately. The number of samples and brands representing each grade are as follows: Regular price, 869 samples, 76 brands; premium price, 452 samples, 45 brands; third-grade, 358 samples, 82 brands. In this report the same marketing districts are retained as were used in the preceding report, and as far as possible the actual sampling points in each area arc indicated on table 1.

The Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine concentrations of toxic gases and liquids, and smoke-particle diameters and diameter-concentrations evolved during degradation of PVC-derived brattice with and without nylon-woven fabrics, fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, and other mine materials. The samples were exposed in a 20-L chamber at temperatures of 1500 to 4500 C, with a chamber airflow of 10 L/min; 27.3 cm3/s of which was directed into a submicrometer-particle detector-analyzer. During the degradation of PVC-derived brattice, large concentrations of hydrogen chloride (TLV, 5 ppm; STEL, 100 ppm) evolved at a temperature as low as 2000 C. The minimum toxic load of 3.1 mg or 40 ppm in 50 L of dilution air, with O.l~g weight loss, may be reached at a mine face with 314,000 L of dilution air, at the 5th min, during which less than 1 kg of brattice undergoes combustion. Fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, pine wood dust, and coal dust showed small concentrations of carbon monoxide evolving during early stages of combustion. Hydrogen cyanide gas evolved from the PVC-derived, nylon-reinforced brattice; at a later stage of combustion, large concentrations pf carbon monoxide and dense smoke evolved from all PVC-derived brattices. Experiments to characterize smoke particles showed that marked differences exist in particle diameter-concentrations among the materials.

The coal reserve base in the Western United States is presented for coalbeds amenable to extraction by underground mining methods. The Federal Bureau of Mines has abstracted data on the quality and quantity of coal resources/reserves from numerous State and Federal publications and modified such data as necessary to allow computer storage and retrieval. Tonnages are compiled by State, county, coalbed, and rank, and allotted to sulfur categories by statistical apportionment. The coal reserve base in those States west of the Mississippi River, amenable to underground mining, is estimated to be approximately 131 billion tons. Of this total, about 30.8 billion tons are bituminous coal, 100.2 billion tons are subbituminous coal, and 126.4 million tons are anthracite. Lignite is not considered for underground mining in this report. Included in this report is a glossary of terms applicable to a classification system for coal resources and reserves as jointly defined by the Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The purpose of this system is to provide for direct comparison or compilation of various resource/reserve data.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting an investi-gation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples from some oil fields of Louisiana are given in Bulletin 291. Analyses Of 26 representative crude oils from various producing formations of southern Louisiana are given in this report. These samples are from 14 fields in 10 parishes in the southern part of the State, usually designated as the "Louisiana Gulf Coast area."
