This Bureau of Mines report discusses research to analyze and evaluate extended bumper systems in order to determine the degree of protection provided to equipment operators in the event of rear-end collisions be-tween off-road rear-dump haulage trucks. The basic characteristics of rear-end collisions were determined, and a detailed analysis of the col-lision dynamics was performed to identify the magnitude and direction of impact loads, the amount of energy that must be absorbed during impact, and the major factors that affect the outcome of a collision. Separate bumper designs were developed to facilitate attachment to four 170-st-capacity haulage truck frame types.

Part 1 of this report is concerned with the electric-furnace production of calcium aluminate and iron alloy from a variety of siliceous ferruginous ores of aluminum. The furnacing research was directed, first, to determine the extent of the field in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system, in which calcium aluminates with the optimum leaching characteristics are obtained; second, to produce suitable quantities of these aluminate mixtures for pilot-plant leaching tests; third, to investigate the physical chemistry of the reduction reactions during furnacing; and, fourth, to study the economics of the process. The third and fourth steps were not completed. Part 2 comprises another phase of the work and will appear as a second Report of Investigations. It deals with the extraction of metallurgical-grade alumina from the calcium aluminate slag produced in the electric furnace and includes the following steps: leaching, desilicating, precipitating, dewatering, filtering, and washing of the aluminum hydrate. No claim is made that the data are complete, nor has the chronological order of obtaining data been followed. Rather, it is emphasized that additional work is necessary if the full possibilities of the process are to be evaluated. and made available.

Reduce accidents associated with handling of the electrical trailing cable and the water hose on mining equipment. Approach Two reels were mounted on a loading machine to store and release the lines as required during face operations. How It Works A hydraulic motor, which is actuated by a treadle valve in the operator's cab, controls the reel on which 50 feet of electrical power cable is stored. A spring motor resists unwinding of the other reel on which 50 feet of water hose is stored. Both reels are mounted on the right rear of the loading machine. See Figure 1. Following common mining practice, the cable and hose are anchored to fixed points at the first intersection outby the face. Tramming forward causes the cable and hose to be pulled from the reels. Depressing the treadle valve causes the electric cable reel to turn and wind-in any slack in the cable. The spring tension on the water hose reel automatically rewinds the water hose when the loader is trammed in reverse.

Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. In response to these improvements and the introduction of the EU Human Vibration Directive, ANSI Working Group S2.39 developed the revision to ANSI S3.34, which has now been published as ANSI S2.70-2006.2 Method ANSI S2.70 specifies the use of the hand-arm vibration measurement procedures outlined in ISO 5349, Parts 1 and 2.2,4,5 It requires the measurement of ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in three mutually orthogonal axes of vibration. These values are then vectorially added to obtain the vibration total value, ahv: [ ] where ahwx, ahwy, and ahwz are the measured r.m.s. ISO frequency-weighted acceleration values in the x, y, and z directions, respectively. Although there are exceptions, oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. When these ores are of high enough grade they can be smelted; indeed, some rather low-grade ores of this type have been smelted at a profit because of their fluxing value. In the past, when these ores could not be smelted, they either were not treated or were treated at low efficiency, generally by cyanidation. The need for thorough investigation of the problem was therefore evident for some time before the writers began their research. The problem of treating manganese-silver ores seems to have been recognized first about 35 years ago by C. W. Goodale in applying pan amalgamation at Tombstone, Ariz. He attributed the low extraction of silver to the fouling of the mercury by manganese rather than to the presence of a refractory compound of manganese and·silver. Although definite knowledge as to the cause of the poor extraction of silver was lacking, a more or less effective preliminary treatment, that is, a chloridizing roast, was applied. E. M. Hamilton, in 1909, was perhaps the first to define clearly the problem as it affects the cyanidation of silver ores and to suggest possible methods of preliminary treatment. Most of the work done in the interval between the appearance of Hamilton's paper and the assumption of the investigation by the authors was in the nature of routine tests covering suggestions already made rather than of research directed to a fundamental study of the problem. No practical application has so far been made of any of these proposed processes. The investigation described in this bulletin has proved that there s a refractory compound of manganese and silver-probably a manganite- insoluble in cyanide solution and other common solvents for silver. Although this compound has not been isolated from natural ores, it has been made synthetically, and shows all the characteristics of the natural product. An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: (a) Which coals, either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation, are suitable chemically under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. (b) Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. (c) Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation. This report is one in a county series and describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Logan County, W. Va. According to present-day standards for metallurgical coal, many believe that the sulfur content of the coal should not exceed 1.25 percent? Coal with more than this amount has been used for making metallurgical coke, especially when blended with coal containing less sulfur. In this series of reports 1.25 percent sulfur is used as a gage to determine whether or not a coal will be suited for metallurgical coke.

Hand forces are important factors for risk assessment of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).1 Grip force is one of the most important force components in the operation of powered hand tools. A considerable number of studies on grip force have been reported. It is well known that the grip force applied on a cylindrical handle is not uniformly distributed on each axis across the center of the handle cross-section.2 Therefore, maximum and minimum orientations of grip force exist around the handle. Such orientations have not been clearly identified. In a recently proposed international standard (ISO/CD 15230, 2005),3 it is stated that “the direction of the main gripping force is generally parallel to the z-axis defined in ISO 8727.” 4 This assertion is questionable, and further examinations are required. The objective of this study was to establish a fundamental theory on the distribution of the grip force around cylindrical handles. Methods As shown in Fig. 1, the grip force is defined as a vector composed of normal and shear components (FN & FT) in this study. Fig. 2 shows the hand coordinate system defined in this study, together with the ISO systems.1,4 Based on this novel grip force definition, we derived four fundamental properties and a theorem. More significantly, we formulated a novel hypothesis: similar to Mohr’s circle of stress, the normal and shear components can be represented approximately using an ellipse on the plane of the two force coordinates, as shown in Fig. 3. The maximum and minimum grip normal forces are termed as the first principal grip force (F1) and the second principal grip normal force (F2), respectively. Their corresponding orientations are termed as the first principal grip angle (a1) and the second principal grip angle (a2). A series of experiments were conducted to test this hypothesis. Twelve

Coal mining in the United States, had a somewhat higher death rate per million man-hours of exposure among the employees in 1937 than in 1933 to 1936. However, the rate in 1937 was lower and therefore more favorable than that in any year since 1921 but previous to 1933. The nonfatal injury record, which began in 1930, was lower and therefore better in 1937 than in any other year since 1930. Separate figures covering bituminous-coal mines in all States showed a lower fatality rate in 1937 than in any year since 1920 but before 1933, and a lower nonfatal injury rate than that of any year since 1930 except 1933 and 1936. Reports for anthracite mines in Pennsylvania revealed a better safety record for fatal accidents in 1937 than in any year since 1930 except 1933, 1934, and 1936 and a better record for nonfatal injuries than in any year since 1930 except 1933.

In 1983 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Golden Valley Wilderness Study Area (WSA), CDCA-170. The 29,887 acre WSA, located in the western Mojave Desert near Ridgecrest, California, is underlain by pre-Tertiary plutonic rocks and volcanic and sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Miocene (?) or Lower Pliocene (?) through Pleistocene and Recent. No mines were operating in the WSA in 1983, nor is any mineral production known to have come from the WSA. Two mining claim blocks, portions of which are within the WSA, and seven isolated prospects, four inside the USA, were examined and sampled. No mineral resources were identified. Widespread propylitic alteration, with localized argillic and alunitic alteration, occurs along the southern boundary of the study area. Samples from claims and prospects within the altered zones are anomalous in gold, silver and arsenic, and some contain antimony, tungsten and mercury, indicating gold resources may exist. Alluvial sample results suggest recent claims in the northwest corner of the study area may also have gold resources. Portions of the study area are within the Randsburg Known Geothermal Resource Area while other segments are considered prospectively valuable for oil and gas and for sodium.

The objective of this is paper is to review the current state of knowledge and practice in highwall mining (HWM). HWM has become a widely-applied method in surface mining, commonly used alone or in conjunction with contour or slot mining. It provides 800-feet to 1,200-feet of additional recovery when the economic stripping ratio is reached in contour mining or in slot mining when surface access to a reserve is limited. A significant attribute of the highwall miner is its versatility. HWM has been used successfully to mine abandoned pre-reclamation law highwalls, points or ridges uneconomic to mine by underground or other surface methods, outcrop barriers left adjacent to underground mines, separate benches of the same seam where the parting thickness or quality differences between benches render complete extraction uneconomic, previously augered areas containing otherwise inaccessible additional reserves and close or widely spaced multiple seams. The theory and design methods to assess roof, pillar, and floor stability are presented followed by three case histories. Simple design charts for sizing HWM web and barrier pillars are also presented. A recommended web pillar width may be obtained from the design charts given the overburden depth, the HWM cut width, and the mining height. Given the depth and panel width for a set of HWM cuts, another set of charts gives a suggested barrier pillar width. The case histories, from Northern and Southern Appalachia are used to illustrate the application of rock mechanics to quantify the stability of the highwall, roof, web pillars, and floor. The case histories involve 1) mining through a previously augered highwall, 2) mining under back-stacked spoil and 3) selective mining of closely spaced benches of the same seam. Because each site is unique, the appropriate pre-mining geotechnical analyses range from the calculation of roof, web pillar, and floor bearing capacity stability factors to detailed numerical modeling of the auger and underground mine workings. When operating in the vicinity of existing underground mine or auger workings, the determination of ground deformation and strains resulting from highwall mining is a necessary facet of a ground control investigation.

"INTRODUCTION For the last several years the oil industry has been turning more and more toward conservation arid the study of related production problems. It is generally conceded that ultimate recovery is increased by holding the natural gas in thy sand which is net needed in lifting the oil. The retained gas lowers the viscosity and surface tension of the oil and helps flow the oil from the sand. Lewis states that ""while the operator can not control the original conditions of energy and resistance in the sand, he can partly control the efficiency of expulsion. As it is the energy contained in the compressed and absorbed gas rather than the oil that is exhausted, it is but logical to judge the efficiency of a producing method largely by the relative quantities of gas produced with each barrel of oil. If by a change in method the producer lessons the proportion of gas with each barrel of oil, he should increase the total recovery- of oil correspondingly, even if the rate of production is temporarily reduced somewhat.""The effect of ""pinching in"" or controlling the flow of oil wells in an effort to lessen the proportion of has never been definitely known. The general belief has been that ""pinching"" a flowing well causes the oil and gas volumes to be reduced proportionately, maintaining the same gas-oil ratio as before the reduction in flow was made. Studies of gas-oil ratios in many fields have shown that much gas has been wasted, insofar as its effectiveness in oil production is concerned. Swigart and Bopp carried."

The application of modern secondary-recovery methods has made possible the the extraction of more than 13 million barrels of crude petroleum from the eastern part of the Delaware-Childers field Nowata County, Okla., over and above the production that might have :been expected by continuing primary production methods, including the use of vacuum. Foremost among the secondary-recovery methods used in this foil was the repressuring of the Bartlesville sand with air and gas through injection wells spaced on sym-metrical patterns. Between 1925 and 1945, about 51 billion cubic feet of air and gas were injected into the producing formation, and the total recovery was increased from, 25 million to about 40 million barrels of oil. To produce as much as possible of the 28 million barrels of recoverable oil remaining in the sand will require the initiation of systematic water-flooding projects on many properties and the continuation of air and gas injection on others.

Electrical resistance heating to effect thermal fragmentation of semiconductive rock was examined by the Bureau of Mines. Tests were carried out on copper-bearing ores of the Nonesuch Shale Formation in the laboratory and in the the field at White Pine, Mich. Fieldwork included primary and secondary breakage tests. Heating tests on in situ rock failed to produce thermal dam-age to an extent considered useful; however, boulders up to 30 ft3 were effectively broken by the method. Power input to the test rock was taken from a 50-kV, 5-amp dc power supply.

An analysis of the geologic structure of an area of Buchanan County, Va., was made by the Bureau of Mines using imagery from an airborne AN/APQ-97 side-looking radar system to evaluate that mapping technique for delineating structural features that may cause mining problems. Side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) was found to be a useful remote sensing tool for geologic structural analysis, Fault and joint systems identified by lineaments and linear patterns in the imagery were verified by surface and in-mine observations. Little Paw Paw fault was extended 10 miles by SLAR lineament analysis. A 22-mile fault, here named the Bishop-Bradshaw Creek fault, was mapped by lineament analysis and verified by observation of the fault on the Bishop Coal Co. mine map and on offset patterns of commercial gas production along the fault and surface observation of lineament along the fault. Three major super-imposed joint sets and several fault or fractured zones were identified by SLAR lineament analysis, showing more complex structure than earlier mapping indicated. SLAR imagery accurately delineated structural features that are known to affect gas migration and accumulation and that weaken the rock forming the immediate roof to mine workings, causing mining problems and potentially hazardous environment in the mines.

The New Hope field was selected for study by; Bureau of lanes engineers because many problems met by, the operators during development and operation were unique to petroleum-engineering experience. Solving these problems is believed to have doubled the ultimate recovery of oil from the field. Since the discovery well was 'completed, in April 1943, an oil-productive area of 4,950 acres- has been delineated by the drilling of 64 wells, four of which were dry holes. Four oil-bearing reservoirs - the Bacon oolitic limestone, and the Hill, Pittsburg) and Elledge sandstones, all, in the Trinity group of the Lower Cretaceous series-- have been penetrated at depths ranging from 7,300 to 8,100 feet. Three of these reservoirs were found to be closed-type or solution gas-drive reservoirs, and one - the Hill - was an open-type or water-drive reservoir. During the course of the study, the Tide Water Associated, Oil Co. and -Seaboard al Co. of Delaware made available to the writers all well records, electric logs; and coring, production,, and pressure data. The ,writers performed Certain field and laboratory- tests on cores of ,the reservoir racks and' samples -of the reservoir Oils. Analyses of cores from the four reservoirs showed average .porosities ranging from 10 to 18 percent, average permeabilities of 17 to 297 millidarcys, and -average 'connate water contents ranging from 25.4 to 30.6 percent. Subsurface and recombined samples of reservoir oils indicated that the oils in the Bacon Hill, and Pittsburg reservoirs contained ,206 to 422 cubic feet of gas in solution per barrel initially, and that the, reservoir oils were undersaturated with gas. No samples' of oil from the Elledge reservoir were analyzed, and because of meager data this reservoir was not studied in detail. 4 The presence of free 'gas' or a' gas cap, however, indicated that the oil in the Elledge reservoir was saturated with gas. The rapid decline in pressures in- the' four reservoirs during the 'first year of operation alarmed the operators and provoked them to investigate the reservoir conditions to determine the cause.

A mineral survey of the Fisher Gulch RARE II area (A5299), Trinity County, California was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey. The Bureau of Mines was responsible for detailed examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized zones; the Geological Survey conducted geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies of the area. The area is underlain by the Salmon Hornblende Schist. Tonalite stocks 1.5 mi (2.8 km) to the east and northeast of the area intrude the schist and are closely associated with the nearby nines (Cox, 1967). The mines have quartz veins containing sulfides and gold in shears trending east to north past in the schist and tonalite (Hotz, 1972). Strewn and terrace gravel s occupy most of the drainages, many have yielded substantial quantities of gold.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gras association, has been studying actively for the past several years the problem of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. Numerous data on gas flow through pipe lines under many conditions of operation have been obtained by carefully conducted tests, and these data, together with all other available information, have been analyzed carefully to secure practical facts for the use of operators in designing pipe lines and determining the effects of different operating conditions on pipe-line capacities. The first procedure in initiating; this problem was to review, compile, and analyze all of the existing data on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines. Actual data applicable to pipe and operating conditions normally used in the transmission of natural gas were meager, and the several pipe line flow formulas developed by different investigators gave widely varying; results when applied to problems of pipe-line design. Therefore, further experimental work under conditions comparable to those found in transmitting natural gas was essential before any definite recommendations could be made.

The effect of water infusion on the flow of methane and on the production of dust was investigated at an active face in the Pittsburgh coalbed. The average total flow of methane at the face decreased by approximately 79 percent, whereas the flow from the ribs increased about 24 percent after infusion. On the day after infusion, dust concentrations appear to have been reduced; however, the presence of large quantities of rock dust obscured the results on the following days.

This Bureau of Mines publication contains analyses and related source data for 224 natural as samples from 18 States. Of the total, 191 sam¬ples were collected during calendar year 1981. The remaining 33 samples were collected during previous years, but releases, granting permission to publish were not received until 1981. All samples were obtained and analyzed as part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by the mass spectrometer and special helium apparatus described previously (1-2).3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Twenty-five publications have presented the results of 12,827 gas analyses made prior to 1981. The first three bulletins (1-3) contain analyses and related data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960; these bulletins have been supplemented annually by information circulars (4-17, 19-24) containing 7,609 analyses of samples collected since 1960.
