Most of the Indian coking coals are medium coking and of very high ash content. Beneficiation of these coals is a must for their utilisation in coke making. During washing while the ash content of the coal is reduced, the same is expected to affect the reactive-inert ratio and the proportion of various petrographic constituents in the clean coal. This will affect the coking behaviour, including the expansion characteristics, of such coal. An increase in expansion behaviour of coal increases the wall pressure and may damage the battery wall. Therefore, close monitoring of coking properties along with drop in ash is necessary for smooth use of the coal in coke ovens. An effort is, therefore, essential to understand the impact of washing on its coking properties. The studies were carried out with captive coals of Tata Steel, India. Three medium coking coal samples namely, VII A, VI A and XI SEB seam coals of West Bokaro Colliery were used for the study. The coal samples after washing to different ash levels were subjected to the following analysis: proximate, crucible swelling number (CSN), LT GK test, dilatometer and plastometer tests and petrography. The experimental data were then analysed to assess the relationship of various coking properties of the coal with its ash content. The studies clearly show that there is a strong impact of beneficiation of the coal on its coking behaviour. The impacts are more at lower level of ash in the clean coal. In general, the coking properties increase with a decrease in ash. This is primarily due to an enrichment of vitrinte materials in the clean coal and an increase in the reactive-inert ratio in the coals. However, the most important impact of the lowering ash is on the increase in the swelling nature of the coal. The coals with lower ash become highly expanding in nature. This may be very critical from operations of coke ovens point of view, especially stamp charged coke ovens. Necessary precaution should be taken in selecting the other coal blend constituents when these coals are beneficiated to a very low level of ash content.

"The most important metals in the jewelry sector are undoubtedly gold and silver. As a result of workmanship work done in the jewelry industry, the tiny metal and jewel fragments and metallic powders are scattered. Given the prices of gold and silver on the market, the dust that emanates from these workshops is of great importance. Gold recycling has become as important as raw material production within the mass market and gold production industry. In 2016, 29% of the world gold supply has been obtained through recycled gold production. Waste derived from jewelry activity is included in this category, and represents an essential component of this percentage. In the scope of this study, the recovery possibilities of Au and Ag from jewelry sweeps floor sample was investigated using flotation method. In the experiments, optimum pH value, particle size, the effect of dispersant, type and amount of reagent were investigated. As a result of these studies, it was determined that the optimum pH value was 6.5 and the particle size was -212 microns. It was observed that the most suitable reactive combination was Aero 242 and Aerophine 3418A and Na2SiO3 has no positive effect on recovery of Au and Ag as a dispersant agent. As a result of tests, a final concentrate containing 268 ppm Au and 2122 ppm Ag was obtained with 81.4% and 74.5% recovery respectively. INTRODUCTION Because of the softness of pure gold, it is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry, altering its hardness and ductility, melting point, color and other properties. On the other hand, gold has some special chemical properties which in normal conditions, don’t react with water, dry or humid air, oxygen, ozone, nitrogen, hydrogen, fluorine, iodine, sulfur and hydrogen. According to Deutsche Bank Research, the primary usage of gold is jewelry. It has been used to make ornament and jewelry for thousands of years. Humankind has known silver since prehistoric times like gold because silver occurs in native form. The metal is found in the Earth's crust in the pure, free elemental form native, as an alloy with gold and other metals, and in mineral such as argentite. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of copper, gold, lead, and zinc refining. Silver is very soft metal like gold also, it is the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and the lowest electrical contact resistance of all metals (Habashi, 1997). Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

Associated with the development of a novel microbiological oxidation process for the conditioning of iron hydroxide slurries from ferrous mine waters, there is a realistic chance to make the contained iron available for a material utilization. The transformation of ferrous into ferric compounds is coupled with the precipitation of iron hydroxisulphate mostly in terms of the mineral Schwert-mannite. The further treatment of the iron hydroxisulphate has to be aimed on the processing for product recovery and product refinement. For many potential applications, e.g. in the ceramic industry, the pigment industry or for metallurgical applications, the removal of sulphate is essential. For the dehydration of the iron hydroxisulphate and the sulphate removal, microwave heating technology is a beneficial method. In contrast to conventional thermal heating processes the supply of energy in microwave application takes place directly within the material through the dissipation of electromagnetic energy, i.e. no heating medium is needed. It is a volumetric heating process regardless of the surface of the material. The rapid and targeted energy supply and the good controllability of microwave heating systems are advantages which have led to a wide variety of applications in industrial processes. Among the diverse use for heating of temperature-sensitive, chemical and pharmaceutical products as well as foodstuffs the number of applications also in mineral and solid processing increases. At the Department for Mechanical Process Engineering and Solids Processing of the Technical University Berlin the use of microwave technology for the treatment of iron hydroxisulphates has been investigated systematically within the framework of a cooperative research project. The paper at hand shows results from material conversion tests subject to a variation of the relevant process parameters. The reaction products are characterized and the process is compared with the conventional heating in a rotary kiln.

"The study was conducted with the sulfide mineral from the province of Zamora Chinchipe. It was characterized physical, chemical and mineralogical, obtaining between its main results a copper concentration of head ore of 0,58 %. The mineral was homogenized and taken to direct closed circuit: rollers mill - vibratory sieve (mesh # 16). Flotation was carried out in two stages: the collective and selective where in each one were performed 6 water recirculation as suggested by the technique used to relate information of a batch flotation to a continuous circuit called cyclic flotation tests (LCT). In the collective flotation (bulk) 2 Kg of mineral were grinded with 10 Kg of balls for 30 minutes and 62.5% of solids, the pulp was taken to the flotation process with solids percentages of 33.3% and pH 7, it was conditioned with 45 g / t of KAX 1%, 50 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 20 g /t of Pine oil. The concentrate and tailings bulk obtained were filtered separately for the recovery of water and it was recirculated to the next grinding of 2kg mineral. In the selective flotation 1Kg of bulk concentrate was carried to regrind for 40 min, 62.5% percent of solids, 10 g of lime and 5 g of tannin FLOATAN T5, the pulp was taken to the roughing-collection-refining flotation circuit controlling the pH between 10.5 and 11 where conditioning (60 g/t of Aerofloat 208 and 30 g/t of Pine oil) and adding lime to the circuit and FLOATAN according to the procedure. The four fractions obtained from the circuit were filtered; the water was recirculated to the regrind process of the bulk concentrate. In the collective flotation process tends to stability in the fourth recirculating water to obtain a copper content of 4.5% and a recovery of 87%, recirculated water represents 69.8% of all water used in the 6 recycles. In the selective flotation circuit the fifth recirculating of water is the optimal where obtaining a copper content of 13% and a recovery of 72%, recirculated water in the selective flotation circuit represents 95% of the total water used in the 6 recycles."

"Some sulphide mineral mixtures when exposed to air and a warm and humid environment can exhibit a self-generating temperature rise, referred to as self-heating or spontaneous heating. The observed self-heating derives from the oxidation reactions of the active sulphides. In previous publications by the authors, it was proposed that the self-heating of sulphides proceed in three distinct stages; namely, Stage A, Stage B and Stage C. In Stage A (<100OC) the sulphides, in the presence of moisture are oxidized, generating heat through a series of sequential reactions and forming elemental sulphur as one of the products. In Stage B (>100OC) the elemental sulphur produced in Stage A is further oxidized to generate additional heat and SO2. Stage C (>~380OC), sometimes referred to as thermal runaway or roasting, is not addressed in this paper. This communication focuses on the type and role of elemental sulphur found in Stages A and B, and the sequence of reactions that is occurring in Stage A. The sequence is divided into two phases, the first based on galvanic interaction between the sulphide minerals that generates an acidic environment but little heat, and the second involving the production of H2S which rapidly oxidizes to produce heat and elemental sulphur. To date, data suggest that the primary oxidation product formed in Stage A is the stable orthorhombic a-S8 form of elemental sulphur. Above 96OC the a-S8 transforms to a monoclinic ß-S8 structure which is less stable and will readily oxidize to generate heat and SO2. Above 159OC a proportion of the ß-S8 sulphur will transition to a polymeric Sµ form of sulphur which can readily volatilize. INTRODUCTION Some particulate and granular materials, when exposed to appropriate atmospheric and physical conditions, can exhibit a self-induced temperature rise resulting from accumulated heat due to internal exothermic oxidation reactions. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as self-heating or spontaneous heating. Under favorable physical and environmental conditions, these reactions can elevate the temperature of a given material from ambient to the point of auto-ignition. Self-heating behaviour should not be equated to pyrophoric behaviour which describes a group of materials (e.g. certain finely powdered metals) that will ignite spontaneously in air below 55OC. There are numerous materials such as coals, hay, forestry wood products, food products to name a few that can exhibit self-heating behaviour. This publication continues the focus of the authors on the self-heating of sulphide mineral mixtures. Many of the metals of commercial use found in nature are in the form of these sulphides which must be mined, crushed, ground and concentrated prior to smelting or hydrometallurgical processing in order to produce primary metal. The issues of sulphide self-heating therefore pertain to the mining and processing of metals."

The t10 relationship developed by Narayanan and Whiten has underpinned a number of the JKMRC models and the characterisation of ore competence through impact testing with the drop weight tester. This usefulness is based on a consistent relationship between the t10 value and the overall size distribution that was noted for brittle rocks. However, like all characterisation tests this should be used only when the controlling conditions apply, which in this case is single impact breakage between two metal platens and within the range of sizes in which fragment sizes are normalizable. For any other mode of breakage the relationship should be confirmed before being applied. Soft ores or bimodal ores with widely different competence between dominant components have non-typical breakage signatures. Breakage via single point impact abrasion, compressed-bed breakage, low-energy surface breakage and incremental breakage, to name some of the other breakage modes, do not obey the general t10 relationship, so their outcomes cannot be used to provide a direct comparison. Inappropriate use of the t10 parameter can result in misleading conclusions about efficiency of energy use. These issues and alternative comparison techniques are presented and discussed in terms of choosing appropriate measures of efficiency of breakage, ore competence and energy required for comminution.

There are rich resources of natural graphite in China. It would be a good opportunity to upgrade national graphite industry if natural graphite with modification is used in lithium ion battery. Micro-crystalline graphite in high purity was coated with a carbon film on the surface. The initial cycle efficiency was improved to be 89.9% and cycle stability was remarkably improved. The experiments proved that microcrystalline graphite with carbon coating have excellent electrochemical performances at low cost as anode materials for lithium-ion battery. In addition, H2SO4-GIC technique was used to prepare the natural flake graphite powders with mild-exfoliation. Sub-micro and nano pores were found in the graphite samples. In correspondence the reversible capacity, rate capacity and cycle life were improved, which would meet the demand of high-power lithium-ion battery. Natural graphite is the most promising anode material for large-scale lithium-ion batteries. The demand of modified graphite grows up greatly in the market. Microcrystalline graphite with surface coating and flake graphite with mild-exfoliation are the promising commercial anode materials for the industry of lithium ion battery.

The paper introduced bio-oxidation plants of refractory gold concentrate in China and CCGRI cultures. CCGRI cultures are composed of bacteria and archaea. Archaea Ferroplasma acidiphilum is very thick and fills whole mineral surface. It plays a more dominant role in CCGRI process. Several years of practice has proved that the operating temperature in bioreactors between 38~52?,gold recovery is almost same. Pulp concentration has been increased each year and reached to 25%.

Turkey?s EU affairs started in 1963 with the Ankara Treaty. On 31 December 1995 the Customs Union between Turkey and the European Union came into effect. In order to achieve the Copenhagen Criteria?s, Turkey, made laws parallel to the Framework Programs. On 3 October 2005, with the confirmation of ?Membership Framework Document? the negotiation process of Turkey has started. Coal had important role in the industrialization of EU and it is directly related to Energy and Environmental subjects. In this point many restriction became with the some protocols, in last decades. European Union composed Energy and Coal Policy, therefore engaged to reduce the emissions, and made new regulations. This regulations concern Turkey?s energy future, since large; but low quality of lignite reserves of Turkey, it is expected to have some difficulties with Union?s Environmental Legislation during Turkey?s congruity process. With the last natural gas import agreements of Turkey, the production and consumption of coal sunk in last seven years. However, considering environmental sustainability, the role of coal in energy production will rise up in the coming future. In this paper, in terms of Turkey Energy Sector, production and consumption problems of coal discussed and evaluated considering EU?s coal, energy and environmental rudiments.

It is difficult to analyse the economics without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail to analyse and act is a problem. However, to take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. Validation methods use process models to identify inconsistent information in the case of corrupt actionable information. This paper presents new strategies that transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. This technical presentation will review recent implementations enabling large metallurgical complexes to improve their data quality for overall production and energy management. A competence center emerges as an enabler for implementing operational intelligence. The evolution of Web services to troubleshoot plant information and to collaborate at the enterprise level is presented.

"The research aimed at developing an efficient and environmental frother,which was applied in the flotation of sulfide ores. The flotation properties of an efficient frother and pine oil have been studied relatively by flotation tests of lead and zinc sulfide ores. At the same time, the biodegradability of two kinds of frother has been studied by the method of biological respiratory curve. The test results show that the flotation properties of new frother are superior to pine oil such as flotation rate, dosage etc. and its biodegradability is superior to pine oil. INTRODUCTION Frother is a kind of important agent in flotation reagents.In practice, the criterion of the foaming performance of the frother is what is high and low according to flotation indexes. The difference of different minerals and flotation technologies has great influence on the foaming performance of frother, and it is very important to choose the corresponding frother. The type, dosage and selectivity of frother in flotation process must be considered carefully. In today's society, environmental protection and ecological protection are becoming more and more important, and the environmental and ecological damage from mine development has aroused increasingly more attention. The use of mine agents has promoted the development of mineral resources, greatly improves the recovering utilization of mineral resources, at the same time, the production and use of mine reagents also inevitably bring about pollution, and result some influence or damage in the ecological environment.The frother is a common kind of reagent in the flotation process of the concentrator. In many cases, the waste water in the concentrator can not be let out in the natural water because the higher content of the frother in the waste water results in higher index of COD.This will inevitably increase the cost of waste water treatment in the mine.Therefore, the choice of frother should not only consider its influence on the flotation index, but also consider its influence on environmental protection. Waste water treatment is a way to solve the waste water pollution, but it needs to cost a lot of fund, manpower and material resources.And the development of high efficiency pollution-free reagent is a good way to reduce the production cost of mining enterprises and reduce the environmental pollution."

That calls for immediately addressing the issues of land availability, solar power cost, developing a dynamic inventory of silica containing minerals, appropriate processing technology and strong regulatory framework for sustainable mining and processing of all silica rich minerals. In most cases, the sizing of dry or wet mills for ore processing is primarily based on the determination of the Bond grindability index, using the Bond-Kjos-Rowland relations. In several cases, grinding takes place under conditions different from these and the grinding conditions have a great influence on the postgrinding process. This is particularly true for the grinding of bauxites where grinding takes place in alkali, often in higher temperature in alkali Liquor. So it is necessary to develop a testing method providing a reliable grindability index even under these special circumstances and allowing a more precise mill sizing. Therefore we surrounded the grinding crucible of the Hardgrove mill with a crucible furnace to heat it. The new heated mill is suitable to determine the grindability index under temperature-controlled circumstances, in liquids (water and alkali) with different temperatures. The required heating power is 2000 W. In the implemented equipment we installed four 230V/500W electric heating wires made from heat-resistant alloyed material and surrounded by ceramic insulators. The temperature and temperature-gradient are measured by four PT100 platinum thermal resistors. The data acquisition and control program written in the C language in the Lab Windows CVI program environment measures the voltage proportional to the temperature. Determining the grindability indices of hungarian and greek bauxites experimentally, first dry grinding tests were carried out under standard conditions. During wet and alkaline grinding, to 50 g of dry bauxite 85.5 g of industrial alkali with a concentration of about 200 g/l was added. As grinding aid 2 g of CaO (4 % of dry bauxite) was dosed. From the data it can be concluded: - The tested bauxites show a similar behaviour against temperature change. However, the extent of grindability change is different for different bauxites. - Soft Hungarian boehmitic bauxite can be ground in a high-temperature alkaline medium better than hard Greek one. The increase of grindability according to the high-temperature Hardgrove indices: (kHT = Dry o HT,alkaline H /H ): for hard Greek and soft Hungarian boehmitic bauxites: kHT = 1.7 and 2.4 respectively; according to estimated Bond indices (kB,HT =Wi,dry/Wi,HT, alkaline ): kB,HT = 1.6 and 2.1. - The increase of grindability is the most important factor the reaction of kaolinite with caustic liquor and lime and the loosing of the textural structure at 80 ºC and especially at 100 ºC.

"The best accepted method for design of autogenous and semi-autogenous mills is to carry out pilot scale test work using a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long pilot scale test mill. The load in such a mill typically contains 250,000-450,000 particles larger than 6 mm, allowing correct representation of more than 90% of the charge. This scale of DEM model is now within the practical range of standard workstations running an efficient DEM code.This paper describes various ways of extracting collision data from the DEM model and translating it into breakage and wear estimates. Account is taken of the different breakage mechanisms (impact and abrasion) and of the specific impact histories of the particles in order to assess the breakage rates for various size fractions in the mills. These impact histories have the potential to be directly related to breakage as they most resemble the single particle breakage tests which are used by the JKMRC to calibrate more traditional population balance models for variations in ore behaviour. However, the specific impact histories also show a background of many low energy collision events within the mill. This Background may constitute what is usually regarded as “abrasion” breakage. As might be expected, high impact events are concentrated in the toe of the charge and near to the mill shell where the forces associated with the load bearing on each particle is more concentrated."

In this paper two optional production processes are presented for reasonable utilization of primary sylvinite in Qinghai province, China. The two kinds of products as chlorine-free potash fertilizers; potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate can be obtained. In the course of potassium sulphate production, using primary sylvinite from Qinghai salt lake as raw material with impurities such as sodium chloride and insoluble in primary sylvinite, it must be prepared by flotation before being converted into potassium sulphate. This final product has found wide use in tobacco industry in China. However, in some cases Chinese farmers would rather buy the fertilizer of potassium magnesium sulphate than high quality of potassium sulphate. With flotation process which is a little different from above mentioned, the potassium magnesium sulphate fertilizer may be produced by washing one of the flotation concentrate presented as picromerite, while another concentrate containing potassium chloride is treated as by-product.

SAGDesignTM Testing for grinding mill design was introduced commercially in 2004. Up to January 2008, 18 projects have been completed and 99 samples have been tested using this method. Two papers have been published describing the patented test procedure and one of these shows how the results compare with other grinding test methods. This paper will briefly discuss the theory on which this technology is based, and explain the procedures used to develop the calibration equation. Case studies are also included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the test work being done. These case studies show how the SAGDesign test is being used today: to design new grinding circuits for commercial full scale use; to calculate throughput in existing mills for production planning; and to accurately define grinding mill requirements at the scoping, pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage of project development, in order to economically identify the size and cost of the grinding mills that will be needed for the project. This is important because if the full rec-ommended SAGDesign testing program is done at an early stage in the project, the definitive cost for a guaranteed throughput, grinding mill design (by Outotec if their mills are purchased) is available. New grinding mill design for final engineering will be represented by the test work done on the Climax Molybdenum Project for Phelps Dodge (now FMI) in Colorado, USA. The SAG mill and ball mill for Climax are now in fabrication with project start up in late 2009. Next, the sizing of grinding mills at the scoping, pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage of mine development will be represented by a large metal mining property in Russia. Finally, calculation of the throughput for existing mills will be represented by work done at a base metal mine, in eastern Canada. Test work for designing SAG mills is now done in four laboratories at the time this paper was written. One in the USA at Dawson Metallurgical Laboratories, Inc. in Salt Lake City, two in Russia at the TOMS Research and Design Institute and at the Irgiredmet Research Institute, both in Irkutsk, and a fourth mill has been installed in Australia at AMMTEC Limited?s lab in Perth. A fifth SAGDesign test mill for radioactive ores has been built by Starkey & Associates, specifically for testing uranium ores and can be moved to any licensed lab in the world on a project basis.

"An estimated 600,000 tons of bentonite clay are used annually in the U. S. as binder for production of iron ore concentrate pellets. Since this is a significant cost item for the plants, and the addition of bentonite to the pellets contributes undesirable silica into the finished pellets, there is considerable incentive for finding methods to reduce bentonite use. One way to reduce bentonite levels is to selectively use those bentonites that are most effective in this application, so that a lower dosage will still produce a sufficiently strong pellet. Unfortunately, there are no satisfactory methods available for accurately predicting which bentonites are actually most effective, short of using them to actually make pellets. One of the popular methods for attempting to evaluate bentonites is the “Plate Water Absorption” (PWA) test. While some plant operators accept the PWA results as indicating the relative quality of bentonites, others disagree and claim that, over a fairly broad range of values, PWA does not correlate with bentonite performance.Since both Ca+2 and Mg+2 ions are known to reduce the swelling and water absorption capacity of bentonite, it was believed that the presence of these ions in plant recycle water could be changing the bentonite performance. Since the standard PWA test uses only distilled water for its measurements, it could not detect these effects. Experiments were therefore carried out on a number of different bentonites using a modified PWA tests, with plant recycle water replacing the distilled water. These experiments showed little effect of the plant water on the PWA value, and chemical analysis of the water showed that the levels of dissolved salts were quite low.Water and accompanying salts were then extracted from a magnetite concentrate filter cake by rinsing with distilled water. Analysis of this water showed an extremely high level of dissolved salts, particularly salts of calcium and magnesium. When concentrations were compared with the recycle water from the plant filters, it was determined that levels of Ca+2 and Mg+2 retained in the filter cake were over 500 times higher than levels in the recycle water. This extreme elevation of soluble salts in the filter cake is believed to be due to adsorption of these ions into the electrical double layer of the magnetite particles."

The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. The benefits of the programme for Anglo American Platinum have been tangible, and will be discussed in the paper. Keywords: graduate training, technology transfer
