This case study examines the control system re-design and network modifications implemented by Conveyor Dynamics Inc. on the original El Brocal Overland Conveyor system to resolve problems associated with the conveyor drive torque control during starting, stopping and running conditions. These problems resulted in symptoms including erratic conveyor behavior, belt over tension, drive slip and inability to achieve nameplate capacity.

En el proceso de molienda, la operación de planta presenta cambios en la mineralogía. Dichos cambios generan incremento en la densidad de la pulpa. Por ello, el presente texto señala el control de este proceso a través de diversas técnicas con inteligencia artificial. De acuerdo a la distribución del tamaño de la partícula en la clasificación del producto de molienda, se controla la adición de la carga de mineral fresco al molino de bolas y se logra maximizar la capacidad de procesamiento del molino.

"El presente trabajo propone una alternativa en el proceso de flotación de minerales polimetálicos (Cu-Pb-Zn), mediante la aplicación del método de Flotación Secuencial en cuyo proceso se obtiene un concentrado de cobre en una primera etapa, luego se flota el plomo y seguidamente el zinc, eliminando la separación Pb/Cu. Este trabajo presenta resultados metalúrgicos obtenidos a nivel de laboratorio, como base para el desarrollo de la flotación secuencial a nivel industrial."

This paper point out the discussion and evaluation of the non-conventional water resources; the discussion of the results of a multicriteria analysis which allows understanding and evaluating the differences; advantages and disadvantages from the technical-economical, social and environmental point of view of the non conventional water supply options: re use of municipal waste water as compared to seawater supply and its two sub options: raw seawater and desalinated seawater. The results show that there are advantages and disadvantages to each approach, but that use of non-conventional water resources is a viable option for mining companies.

Newmont Akyem mine in Ghana is committed with continuous improving results. A new environment where the price varies rapidly requires of better understanding of the deposits and the gold contained in the ore. This better understanding allows the mine planners to quick adjust and fast response to economic changes for gold price. Newmont Akyem Mine has approximately 9.4 million tons of ore in the stockpiles. Mine planers are still using average grade in all stockpiles to do a mine plan. The re-handled material is blended with the prime material coming from the mine.

El presente trabajo señala una variación en la preparación del Under Cut como método de Explotación Sub Level Stopping 3 en la mina Iván -en tanto es usado como subnivel para el reconocimiento, perforación radial y ventana de extracción durante el proceso productivo. El desarrollo de este método contempla una rampa principal de acceso, desde donde se realiza el trabajo de preparación de la cámara para su posterior explotación.De otro lado, se resalta la importancia del estudio geomecánico para el dimensionamiento de la cámara y la secuencia de explotación en el planeamiento de minado.

The extraction of metals from ores is often an energy-intensive process, requiring either smelting or leaching at high temperature, or the use of large quantities of strong acids or bases that require energy to produce. These processes often produce wastes, in gaseous, liquid or solid form, which require treatment before they can be safely disposed, and this waste treatment requires further energy. Thus there is a need to develop more energy-efficient and environmentally-compatible methods. In this sense, the paper point out that ionic liquids are one such method, and that they can be used to selectively dissolve and recover native gold and tellurium, sulphides and tellurides.

XML technology can be used as a standard to transfer information from a relational database to any system that relies on such information. There have been many proprietary methods to perform this information transfer, However, none of them was either able to talk to each other or exchange information in a transparent way. This paper describes a system that will allow for a transparent exchange of information not only between a Web browser and a Web Server but also a stand-alone application and the same Web Server. First, the autor summarize the Internet technologies that support the possibilities. Then the autor outline the tasks needed in order to take advantage of these technologies. Finally, it is suggest a few applications that could take advantage of this system.

Controlling ore contacts prior to excavation is essential to ensuring material types reach the correct downstream locations, so that optimal ore recovery is achieved. This practice is especially pertinent to narrow vein or structurally controlled deposits where very small discrepancies between the assumed and actual locations of the ore contacts can translate to significant ore loss or dilution. However, whether a mine’s priority is to minimize (i) ore loss, (ii) dilution, (iii) contamination, or (iv) adhering to strict blending requirements, blast movement is a problem for every mine, even those situated in massive, gradational deposits.

En el presente trabajo se propone una ecuación para estimar dicho esfuerzo en base a la concentración volumétrica del relave, basado en ensayos desarrollados en el Laboratorio Nacional de Hidráulica con muestras de dos depósitos de relaves de distintas minas polimetálicas y en estudios realizados por O’Brien y Julien (1988) con materiales granulares. La ecuación propuesta permitirá optimizar el diseño de sistemas de conducción de relaves y reducir costos de mantenimiento.

Future challenges to the mining industry are many and include increasing requirements from regulatory agencies and communities, more competitive commodity pricing, increasing competition for power and water supplies, deeper mines and increasing number sulfide ore bodies requiring dealing with Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) controls and finally larger mine waste structures increasing consequences of potential failures. In this sense, the paper deals with approaches that can, and have been, used in planning the overall project and tailings facilities locations and layouts. It also discusses approaches used to achieve better planning, by considering an integrated milling, concentration, and tailings process, rather than considering tailings and the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) as an independent entity.
