Development of Barrick Gold?s Pierina Gold Mine in north-central Peru requires construction of a waste dump for disposal of non-ore grade materials stripped from the open pit to expose the ore. The waste dump site is located near the open pit in a U-shaped valley that is underlain by thin colluvial and morainal soils with locally thick peats and glaciolacustrine deposits. Bedrock underlying the site consists of variably weathered volcanics. The site is subject to moderately high seasonal rainfall and significant seismicity. The geotechnical quality of the waste rock is highly variable, ranging from low quality, degradable, soil-like materials containing appreciable quantities of silt and clay, to high quality, hard, durable, blocky waste rock. A hybrid dump design concept was developed that requires in-pit segregation of high and low quality waste, and selective placement of materials in the dump to maximize stability and enhance internal and subsurface drainage. The design includes a rock drain beneath the dump along the axis of the valley and a series of connected finger drains. Extensive peripheral diversions and stormwater control measures to inhibit infiltration of precipitation are also included. This paper discusses the unique challenges presented by the site and waste materials, the design methodology and stability analyses, and planned monitoring systems.

"Abstract - The Midas Pond gold prospect, central Newfoundland, is hosted by sheared and altered felsic and mafic pyroclastic rocks of the Tulks Hill volcanics, Victoria Lake Group, and has been trenched and tested by 19 diamond-drill holes. Gold values are sporadic, with the best diamond-drill intersection assaying 7.3 g/t over 0.9 m, and the highest grade channel sample containing 14.7 g/t over 1.15 m. Alteration and mineralization are confined to a 200 m wide brittle-ductile shear zone. This shear zone formed in response to regional D1 deformation, and the shear zone fabric parallels the regional S1 foliation. D2 deformation resulted in broad Z-shaped flexuring of the shear zone. The deformation was probably related to the ca. 396 Ma to 420 Ma Salinic Orogeny.Advanced argillic alteration and an extensive halo of Fe-carbonate and pyrite surround the gold mineralization. Alteration minerals include pyrophyllite, paragonite, quartz, plagioclase, chlorite, fluorite, Fe-carbonate, and pyrite. As such, the alteration seems to reflect combined epithermal (argillic) and mesothermal (carbonate) mineralizing environments. The argillic alteration and fluorite represent a regional hydrothermal effect on the felsic volcanic rocks; whereas, the Fe-carbonate and pyrite represent a mesothermal alteration associated with auriferous quartz veins. The Au, which is spatially associated with pyrite, occurs in three structurally-controlled vein sets. These veins are confined to the contact between a highly deformed breccia (the banded mafic tuff) and structurally overlying, altered felsic tuffaceous rocks. The vein sets include: V1 boudinage veins that parallel the shear-zone fabric (C-shear veins), and V2 and V3 extensional fracture veins which are controlled by an S2 fracture cleavage. V1 veins are the earliest and contain the lowest concentrations of Au. V2 and V3 veins are concentrated within the hinges of the D2 flexures.Pb isotope data for galena separates indicate that the Pb in the vein systems was probably of local derivation. Sulfur, C, and O isotope data for mineral separates are similar to data for typical mesothermal lode gold deposits. Fluid inclusion data suggest the presence of at least three hydrothermal fluid types in the region, viz., (1) an early saline fluid which produced the argillic alteration, (2) a CO2-bearing fluid directly related to the auriferous mineralization, and (3) H2O-NaCl fluids which flowed through the Midas Pond shear zone at a lateral distance from the zone of mineralization. The mineralizing fluids are interpreted to have been CO3 -2-rich types which originated through metamorphic dehydration and decarbonation of mixed island-arc and continental crustal rocks. Gold precipitation resulted from the reaction of these fluids with the Fe-rich breccia unit. Pre-existing and simultaneously crystallizing pyrite served as loci for Au precipitation."

"The manual moisture determination methods employed today by mineral processing plants falls short in providing timely information required for automation control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates still represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation, that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, an efficient method of on-line moisture content would be a welcome tool.A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the normally tedious classic manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the “wish list” of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure. Today, the task of moisture determination is still done in the classical technique of loss in weight by uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of 7 to 9%. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback on the moisture content results in the moisture varying from 5 to 12% before corrective actions can be made.This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper describes a unique and promising on-line moisture sensor in two mineral processing applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimization of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarize the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content."

In 1970, the Government of Saskatchewan instituted a program aimed at resolving the dilemma of excess productive capacity over the market demand which existed for potash produced in Saskatchewan. The two primary elements of the program were prorationing of potash production to market demand and a minimum selling price. The paper reviews the factors, both local and international in nature that led to the introduction of the program. The licensing mechanics and the operation of the program, along with the changes that have been introduced in two and one-half years of operation, are discussed. Attention is given to the results of the controls as they affect the industry and the province. Also discussed is the outlook for Saskatchewan potash in world markets.

This paper is derived from a document that compiles autogenous and semi-autogenous mill installations worldwide, through the end of 2010. Updates have been solicited from all major mill manufacturers and most have responded. A review of AG/SAG mills sold to date and in the last five years indicates that the AG/SAG mill market is very healthy and the trend is larger diameter mills with high diameter-to-length ratios. Ring motors (gearless) are the preferred drives for large mills even though the power transmitted through a gear drive is expected to near 11,000 kW per pinion in the near future.

"Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours ' retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surfacedisposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. This increasing demand requires not only largescale mining and processing of conventional and complex uranium ores, but also leads to the consideration of new and nonconventional sources of uranium, e.g., black shales, phosphate rocks, granite, sea water and fossil-fuel ash.Sulphuric acid leaching is the most widely used process to extract uranium from the ore(l). The leach liquor is separated from the solids (tailings), purified, concentrated in various intermediate stages, and finally a semi-purified product, yellow cake (80-85070 U30 8) , is precipitated. The tailings, which constitute nearly 98% of the total bulk of most ores, are usually discarded in surface disposal areas.The Elliot Lake region of Ontario is one of the major uranium producing areas in Canada. The principal uranium minerals are brannerite and uraninite, present as microscopic grains in the matrix of quartz-pebble conglomerates. The average grade is between 0.10 and 0.15% UPs. Up to 6.5% pyrite is also present in the conglomerates. Because pyrite is less reactive toward sulphuric acid leaching, almost all the pyrite goes into the tailings and eventually into' the disposal sites."

"Automatic flotation control in varying degrees of sophistication is practiced at a number of concentrators throughout the world. Practically, the variable conditions in the flotation circuit and the difficulty in maintaining accurate instrumentation information all add to the complexity of automatic control.Further development at the Kidd Creek concentrator has resulted in a 3075 mtpd copper flotation circuit capable of running twenty-four hours a day under the direct control of an optimizing supervisory computer.Three main streams, continuously monitored by an XRF analyser, supply circuit information to the optimizing computer. Circuit efficiency calculations (from smelter contract terms) and target setpoints allow the computer to determine the economic optimum direction to move the circuit based on the grade/recovery relationship. Circuit manipulation is accomplished by precise pumping of collector and frother reaqents together with accurate control of flotation bank pulp levels. The former uses computer controlled diaphragm pumps and the latter is achieved by control loops utilizing a float type level transmitter, variable position dart plugs and a process computer working to setpoints determined by the optimizing computer.The development of a fully automated flotation circuit is by no means complete, but increased knowledge and major hardware improvements have allowed its progression to a higher level of sophistication."

"P.T Freeport Indonesia's new SAG mill commenced operation in February 1995. The reclaim system consists of four apron feeders and a series of three conveyors. The feeders are used in various combinations and relative speeds to blend SAG mill feed. It was recognized during design of the control system that effective automatic control would require dead-time and gain compensation. Introduction It is common experience that on re-heating a fully martensitic steel below the Ac, point, a softer and tougher structure is formed as the tempering temperature is raised. The mechanism of tempering of plain carbon and low-alloy steels has been the subject of many investigations. In a very comprehensive study, Cohen and associates have recently established three different tempering stages, the last of which reaches completion at about 700°F., with heating rates of 5°F. per minute. This latter stage has been established ta be the carbide-forming stage, so that the steel consists of a mixture of ferrite and carbide, which are the metastable equilibrium phases. Any subsequent changes which take place at higher temperatures below the Ac, point in the absence of graphitization or carbide lattice conversion normally consist of agglomeration of the carbide particles. This naturally results in the softening of the steel. However, in many cases the Ac, point, as determined by dilatometry, thermal analysis, etc., only gives a rough estimate of the temperature where the reaction, ferrite plus carbides to austenite, is initiated. This appears to be especially true in the case of alloy steels in which three phases can co-exist in certain temperature ranges. Bain has given data on the three-phase equilibrium in both manganese and nickel steels. In these steels, the formation of austenite at temperatures just above the AeIL apparently involves the diffusion of the alloying elements to the first pools of austenite, thereby making the process very sluggish. As a consequence, the critical Ac points determined by ordinary methods at normal rates of heating can be quite distant from the true equilibrium Ae temperatures.

Reference to the original use of the terms Laurentian and Huronian (and its extension), shows that the former was applied to granitized sedimentary and metamorphic pre-Cambrian rocks, and the gneissoid igneous rocks associated therewith, and the latter to non-fossiliferous rocks supposed to be later. But it appears from the work of Collins, Quirke and others that there is more or less of an overlap, and that of the original Laurentian the Grenville limestone, and some of the granites, may be later than the lowest part of the original Huronian. Before we can decide whether to abandon one or the other of the two terms, or how to delimit them, it is important to know the extent of this overlap. The Pb :U ratio, though not to be depended upon too minutely, does give a real idea of the age of a mineral as it increases with the decay of uranium, and so is greater the longer the time since the uranium was separated: and there are reasonable prospects of help there from in getting a knowledge of the relative age of different granites to assist in solving the problem, as facts already collected show. 1. Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting's Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

"While pipeline hydrotransport is often the most economical way to transport large volumes of mineral concentrate, tailings, or fine ore slurry over long distances, it is in mountainous terrain that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These areas are often remote, with limited existing infrastructure and few potential users willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction of railways or roads suitable for haul trucks difficult and expensive. The elevation difference between the mine and the terminal means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. With pipelines, this elevation difference may reduce or even eliminate the need for pumping. As a result, numerous pipelines have been built, or are being considered, in mountainous regions around the world including: Tasmania, New Guinea, China, Madagascar, the Rockies of North America, and the Andes of South America. However, there are technical difficulties that need to be overcome in the design and operation of mountain pipelines that do not affect pipelines on more level terrain. This presentation reviews some of these difficulties and methods used to overcome them.INTRODUCTIONPipeline transport of solid-liquid slurry (“hydrotransport”) is an important and cost-effective means of transporting large volumes of solids over long distances, especially from a single supplier to a single user (e.g., a concentrator to a port, a concentrator to a tailings dam, or a coal mine to a power plant). Pipelines are generally found to be more economically attractive than alternate transportation methods (e.g. trucking, rail, conveyors, shipping, or some combination) over the life of a project (Aude et al. 1974).Hydrotransport systems have been built in a variety of terrains, but it is in mountainous regions that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These regions are often remote and generally do not have existing transportation infrastructure (roads, railways, navigable rivers). There are few potential users (e.g., farmers, other mines, forestry companies, etc.) who may be willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction and maintenance of railways or all weather roads suitable for large haul trucks difficult and expensive. Mines tend to be higher than the receiving terminal (e.g. a port). This means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. "The Montcalm concentrator operation was successfully commissioned in fall of 2004 at the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site, Timmins. The start-up met or exceeded the Type 1 profile as defined by McNulty. Since the life-of-mine was estimated at seven years, concentrator optimisation endeavours had to be fast-tracked. These joint endeavours between the Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site staff and Xstrata Process Support were focussed on increasing ore treatment capacity and metallurgical performance. This paper reviews these endeavours. A flotation circuit survey, together with appropriate Process Mineralogy measurements, identified recovery opportunities in both locked and overground pentlandite in final tailings. The bypassing of first rougher concentrate directly to final concentrate was also recommended, given the composition of that stream. A subsequent grinding circuit survey identified a low circulating load due to poor classification performance. Modelling of these data suggested a change to the cyclone nest and pumping arrangements in the grinding circuit. Implementation of these recommendations has led to a 25% gain in milling circuit capacity as well as improved flotation circuit performance. These improvements amount to nickel and copper recovery gains of 2.57 and 1.83% respectively.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe Montcalm Ni/Cu Ore is processed in a spare division of the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek concentrator, located near Timmins in Northern Ontario. The flowsheet had been specified by earlier work, and the project fast-tracked so as to commission production operations into a time of rising nickel and copper prices. The Montcalm flow sheet starts with on-site ore crushing to - 19 mm. The crushed ore is trucked to the concentrator. This off-site crushing minimizes contamination with the Kidd Creek Cu/Zn ore. In the concentrator, rod and ball mill grinding to a target p80 of 39 µm produces the Rougher Flotation Feed. Flotation to Bulk Concentrate follows as Cu/Ni roughing and two stages of cleaning. Bulk concentrate is subjected to Cu/Ni separation using conventional column cells. Xanthate is the collector and MIBC is used as frother. Depramin C, a CMC (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) is added to depress ferromagnesian silicates in the flotation process."

"In this study, hydraulic conductivity (K) geostatistics were used to predict residence time distribution of well-to-well flow. Flow profiles, fracture density measurements, and pumping tests were available from the highly fractured Florence Copper in situ leaching site. The flow profiles were used to establish the statistical distribution and spatial autocorrelation of K. Two tests were used for validation. The first test confirmed that fracture density and K are autocorrelated over similar length scales. In the second test, Monte Carlo flow simulations successfully recreated the results of pumping tests. Flow sim¬ulations were used to stochastically model well-to-well residence time distribution. RÉSUMÉ Dans cette étude, nous utilisons la géostatistique de la conductivité hydraulique (K) pour prévoir la distribution des temps de séjour (DTS) de l’écoulement entre les puits. Des profils de l’écoulement, des mesures de la densité des fractures et des essais de pompage existaient pour le site fortement fracturé de lixiviation in situ de Florence Copper. Les profils de l’écoulement ont permis d’établir la distribution statistique et l’autocorrélation spatiale de K. In situ leach modelling requires forecasting the residence time distribution (RTD) of flow between wells. In fractured formations such as copper porphyry deposits, order-of-magnitude variations in hydraulic conductivity (K) can result in highly channeled flow, resulting in a heavy tailed RTD (Becker & Shapiro, 2003; Kang, Le Borgne, Dentz, Bour, & Juanes, 2015). Channeling through preferential pathways has impacted copper recovery at several past in situ leaching field tests (Cathles, Glenn, Lenzi, Nigrini, Deans, & Huff, 1978; Ahlness & Pojar, 1983; Schmidt, Earley, & Friedel, 1994; Sinclair & Thompson, 2015). The aim of this work is to combine multiple types of hydrogeological measurements to stochastically forecast the well-to-well RTD in fractured rock for the purposes of copper in situ leach modelling."

Copper grades were 0.6% and 0.4% for the two samples, A and B, respectively. Leaching experiments were conducted by bottle roll tests for 24 hours, and various lixiviant systems were applied. Methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and glycine were used as alternative lixiviants to sulfuric acid. Oxidants including ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide were tested. The results showed the copper extraction of sample A increased after adding 1 g/L ferric ion in sulfuric acid and MSA solution, from 20% to 36%, but further increase was not observed with higher ferric ion concentration. The copper recovery increased significantly with H2O2 concentration, and over 80% copper recovery was obtained with 10% H2O2. For sample B, the copper dissolution kinetics were relatively fast and reached the maximum value in five hours. Around 60% copper were extracted in sulfuric acid and MSA solution. Copper recovery slightly increased after adding ferric ion and H2O2. Glycine is a weaker lixiviant for both samples, the copper extractions were 36% and 4% respectively. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most abundant copper sulfide mineral on earth, and it is one of the most refractory copper minerals regarding chemical processing. The declining copper grade and depletion of copper oxide deposits stimulate the development of hydrometallurgical process to extract copper from chalcopyrite. The dissolution of chalcopyrite by ferric ion is normally illustrated as Equation (1) and (2) (Dutrizac & MacDonald, 1974): CuFeS2 + 4Fe3+ → Cu2+ + 5Fe2+ + 2S0 (1) CuFeS2 + 4Fe3+ + 3O2 + 2H2O → Cu2+ + 5Fe2+ + 2H2SO4 (2) However, slow kinetics are usually observed from chalcopyrite leaching at ambient temperature and pressure. Researchers attribute the slow kinetics to passivation during chalcopyrite dissolution, and different passivation products are also proposed (Klauber, 2008). In recent years, many efforts have made to develop new methods to extract copper from chalcopyrite, such as utilizing bacteria or stronger oxidant (Zhao et al., 2015; Ruiz-Sánchez & Lapidus, 2017).
