Structural and tratigraphic trends documented during this phase are useful in determining eventual grid configurations. Grids are then mapped and ampled at 1:2000 cale. ii) Magnetometer and gradiometer urvey at the ame scale define strongly magnetic diabase dyke and erratically magnetic portions of iron formation. iii) VLF-EM survey are u eful in outlining conductive trend invariably as ociated with sulphidic or graphitic phase of iron formation. iv) Geological updating and ampling of iron fom1ation based on the geophysical su rveys. This is necessary for the production of a final geologic map and a an adjunct to drill target election. In problematic instances self-potential urveys have documented the pre ence of non-conductive sulphide accumulations, and horizontal loop EM surveys have been used to determine conductor geometry and quality. Target selection is based on a synthesis of the information from all of the above surveys with the results of no single survey being critical to drill decisions. The program is designed to provide first-pass, detailed , cost-effective ground coverage of large areas of highly prospective geology.

"This paper traces the introduction and use of fire-resistant (FR) fluids in hydraulic systems at underground mines in British Columbia. Reasons are given for the decision to make compulsory the use of such fluids in underground mines after January 1, 1975 by provincial government legislation. Examples are quoted of fires caused, or supported by, mineral oils which have resulted in loss of life and property.The basic principles of hydraulic systems are reviewed in order to present the effects of changing a system operating on mineral oils to one which must operate on FR fluids. Approximations of the cost of system conversions are given for certain machines and a brief survey is made of the various pieces of underground equipment which contain hydraulic systems operating on FR fluids.IntroductionIn 1948, Admiral Ben Moreel , who was then president of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation in the United States , wrote:""Although safe and healthful working conditions can be justified on a cold dollars-and- cents basis, I prefer to justify them on the basic principle that it is the right thing to do. ""(1)This paper will outline the introduction and use of fire resistant fluids at mine operations in the Province of British Columbia. That it was the right thing to do in enhancing the safety and well-being of every person employed at the mines was the prime consideration. That it may be justified on a cold dollars-and-cents basis is left for the reader to judge. The prime purpose of this paper is not so much to trace the efforts made by the individual mines to successfully introduce and use fire-resistant (FR) fluids in hydraulic systems, but to present an over-all picture of what occurred, in a collective sense, at the majority of mines which have ended up with a working FR fluid system. The problems attendant to the introduction of an FR fluid will be recounted in a manner which, it is hoped, will prove useful to those contemplating system conversions. Because the predominant fluid now in use is an invert, or water-in-oil. emulsion, this will be the FR fluid considered.Fluid Loss from SystemsThe quantities of various fluids required for use in hydraulic systems are extremely high. This statement in itself may appear to be redundant in that the capacities of the various systems should demand that a fixed amount of fluid is required for the initial filling of a system, with a further amount of fluid scheduled for use during subsequent fluid changes, i.e. at the recommended change intervals . If only this were the case!"

The advantages of generating and distributing electrical energy direct from the coal-fields so closely affects the mining industry that a few remarks on the unbalanced phases of coal distribution is worthy of attention. The value of coal imported into Canada from 1912 to 1921 exceeded the sum of $580,000,000. In 1922 Ontario imported 1,640,000 tons of anthracite and 9,440,000 tons of bituminous coal. I submit that the use of Saskatchewan lignite in an electrical super-power plant equipped for the carbonizing of coal, and disposal of excess gases would be the commencement of a solution of the fuel shortage in Ontario. As Saskatchewan becomes more and more populated and manufacturing increases, the amount of by-product carbonized fuel available for shipment to Ontario will increase, and its shipment to that province would decrease the trade deficit of the national balance sheet. If and when this is carried out it will mean a better and wider market for Alberta fuels in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Conventional flotation machines are typically limited to a particle topsize of 150-200 microns due to inherent constraints created by the pulp and froth phases. To overcome these limitations, a novel fluidized-bed flotation system called the HydroFloatTM Separator has been developed specifically for the purpose of floating coarse particles containing only small amounts of exposed hydrophobic minerals. Over the last decade, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3,000 microns diameter. More recently, sulfidebased test work has shown that this novel device is also capable of recovering metalliferous values at a grind size that is much coarser than currently used in industrial concentrators. In the current study, high resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) was used to experimentally compare the degree of exposed grain surface area necessary to recover coarse particles using the HydroFloatTM technology to that attainable using a traditional mechanical flotation cell. The data indicate that exposed grain surface area is a critical factor for coarse particle flotation. For the gold-bearing sulfide ore examined in this study, the HRXMT data suggest that near complete recoveries of coarse (850x500 µm) multiphase particles containing as little as 1% exposed grain surface area were realistically attainable using the HydroFloatTM technology. As such, this new technology may offer a unique opportunity for increasing concentrator capacity by increasing the primary grind size needed for rougher/scavenger separations.

"Laboratory and trial installations have been completed to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian underground mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been developed and tested, two of which are currently available to the mining industry. Their evalualtion consisted of lab testing in Canada and the United States, along with trial installations in several underground mines throughout Canada. The objective was to develop a cost competitive composite cable bolt equivalent in strength to that of a 16 mm (Ys in.) diameter steel cable bolt. In addition to achieving equal or superior load carrying characteristics in tension, the glass fibre cables generally experienced an increase in the rate of installation due to their lighter weight. Unlike conventional steel cables, composite cables may be installed within mines which utilize continuous excavation and which require cuttable support. A market analysis of cable bolt usage in Canada has been completed. Glass fibre cable bolts are an effective means of rock reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to conventional steel cable bolting. IntroductionCurrent cable bolting practice consists of cement grouting one or more steel cables within a drill hole in order to support the surrounding rock mass. Cable bolts are a form of internal support and are generally used as pre-support in open stope and cut-and fill mining methods. They can be either tensioned (active support) or untensioned (passive support) and may be of any length, though for underground mining applications, are generally less than 20 m (65.6 ft) and are untensioned. A major advantage of cable bolts is that they are flexible and can be coiled to approximately 1 m (3.3 ft) diameter coils. This allows relatively long lengths (>20 m, [65.6 ft]) to be installed in areas with limited head room (1.8 m)."

On November 16, 1978, Finance Minister Chretien delivered his second formal budget in the House of Commons. Over-all, the provisions of the budget should provide moderate stimulus to the Canadian economy. With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

"A joint federal/provincial/industry subcommittee of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Mineral Industry (IOWG) has published an informative and readable report on taxation matters concerning Canada's mining industry. The report, which was presented to the federal and provincial mines ministers in September 1986, identifies and discusses key tax issues relating to this industry. The report is mandatory reading for anybody with an interest in mineral exploration or production in Canada.IntroductionIn 1986, Canada's federal and provincial mines ministers were presented with an important report concerning the taxation of this country's mining industry. This document is important for a number of reasons, two of the reasons being: first, the report contains an objective analysis of the key mineral taxation issues of the day; and, second, the report is the product of a cooperative exercise involving representatives of various facets of the industry and government. The report should be regarded as compulsory reading for anybody who has an interest in fiscal matters affecting mineral exploration and production.The ""Report on Fiscal Proposals"" was prepared by a subcommittee of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Mineral Industry (IOWO). "As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

Shallow-dipping orebodies (45°–60° dip) present significant challenges for underground longhole stoping, particularly due to limited gravity flow, drill misalignment near the footwall, increased potential for dilution from hanging wall overbreak, and deviation from drill string sagging at shallow angles. These geometrical and operational constraints often lead to unblasted ore wedges and excessive overbreak when standard practices are applied. This study develops a structured, data-driven framework to optimize longhole stoping in such conditions by integrating five key focus areas: (1) mining method selection, (2) stope and drift design, (3) drill and blast optimization, (4) equipment selection, and (5) performance evaluation. The suitability of longitudinal longhole stoping was validated for narrow vein geometries using orebody analytics and prior case studies. Geometric modeling was employed to determine optimal stope height (15–20 m) and stope width (1.5–2.5 m), with drift widths adjusted based on orebody dip to maintain drill access and minimize unbroken ore. Drill and blast design emphasized sequential blasting over multi-ring methods to improve void control, reduce wall damage, and enhance fragmentation. Specific burden and spacing guidelines (e.g., 1.8–2.3 m burden; 2.5–3.0 m spacing) were applied based on stope width and dip angle, and patterns were selected based on geometry—dice-5 for narrow stopes, and 3-hole rows for wider stopes. Drill rigs—including top hammer and ITH models from Sandvik, Epiroc, Boart Longyear and CMAC-Thyssen—were evaluated for compatibility with drift dimensions and alignment accuracy. Equipment was matched based on dip, drift width, and the ability to access the footwall at shallow angles. Sensitivity analysis quantified how changes in geometry, drilling accuracy, and blast design affect ore recovery, dilution, and operating cash flow. Results show that tailored drift and stope geometries, combined with proper blasting and rig selection, can boost ore recovery to over 95% and reduce dilution to below 5% in optimal conditions. This methodology offers a practical and economically optimized solution for shallow-dip mining scenarios.

Most of the secondary and low grade zinc raw materials cannot be treated successfully by either conventional roasting - leaching - electrowinning (RLE) process or even by atmospheric direct leaching process. The problems arising especially from high impurity content of these raw materials can be effectively solved by implementation of the solvent extraction process. The utilization of solvent extraction process has been demonstrated by Outotec with raw materials like Waelz oxide, crude zinc oxide and zinc containing concentrator tailings. Based on batch and continuous test work it has been shown that SHG quality zinc can be produced even from the lowest grade raw materials. Impurity control in the solvent extraction process has been examined. The solvent extraction process is the key feature of the whole zinc plant for such raw materials. However, design of the entire zinc process including neutralization and bleed treatment is important for optimization of investment and operation costs of the plant. Very careful evaluation of the zinc process with modern simulation tools is essential. The optimized Outotec zinc process ensures a sustainable and profitable process containing minimal effluent and requiring little residue treatment.

"In the first half of 1990, Cambior earned $1104 million, or $0.37 per share, on revenues of$66.4 million. The company's strong cash position, attained late in 1989 and in the beginning of1990 through the exercise of warrants, put working capital at $83.8 million as of June 30, 1990. Long-term debt was reduced by over $10 million during the weak gold market, leaving the company with a debt to equity ratio of only 0.03. Production for the six first months of 1990 was 107 720 oz. Au, an increaseof24% over the corresponding period in 1989.Financial Profile/Results and Corporate Financial StrategiesTotal revenue for the 1989 fiscal year was $116,883,000 compared to $109,848,000 for 1988. The 1989 results achieved despite a lower average gold price, resulted from a higher level of commercial gold production and a 115% increase in investment income over 1988. Investment income rose to $3,568,000 in 1989 due to higher levels of cash assets.Cambior's mine operating costs increased 19% to $68,561,000 in 1989 from $57,472,000 in 1988. This increase resulted from rising operating costs at the Doyon Mine ($250/oz to $274/oz) due to the shift from open pit to underground operations, as well as from the start -up of three new mines with relatively higher costs. These costs have reached a stable level that should be maintained for the next few years.In 1989, net exploration expenses were $6,838,000, down 31070 from 1988, partially due to the Canadian tax reforms introduced since 1987. Depreciation and depletion grew by $1,432,000 in 1989, reflecting a higher volume of commercial production from the Pierre Beauchemin, Lucien C. Beliveau and Chimo mines.Net earnings for 1989 amounted to $17,661,000 or $0.73 per share compared to $17,438,000 or $0.74 per share in 1988.Cambior has an exceptionally liquid and strong balance sheet. As at December 31, 1989, net working capital stood at $85.6 million, with a total assets base of $338.6 million. With a long-term debt (including gold loans) of $21.5 million and shareholders' equity of $277.2 million, Cambior has a debt to equity ratio of 8%. All but about $100,000 of long-term debt is in the form of gold loans.The total market value for Cambior's stock as at September 10, 1990, stands at $420million, based on recent stock market prices. Restricted by the ore occurrence state, the beneficiation technology level and product economic value, every year the stope strips the stockpiling and discards hundreds of millions of tons of waste rocks containing iron, especially the weak magnetic hematite and limonite with <20% Fe%. The utilization technological bottleneck of these waste rocks makes their concentration ratio as high as 5-6, which leads to the huge wastes of energy, materials and beneficiation reagents and the increase of production costs. The effective solution is to improve the selected Fe% of the waste rocks like hematite. With the successful application of HPGR technologies in Chinese large iron mines, the mill feeding size has been reduced to 6-0 mm or 3-0 mm from the original 15-0 mm in the crushing system with 3 stages of crushing and 1 stage of closed circuit. This creates the conditions for the wet separation and recovery. While for the medium-fine grained weak-magnetic minerals, it lacks of the effective separation and recovery equipment in the world, which’s badly in need of R&D of the medium-fine grained high gradient wet strong magnetic preseparation equipment."

ABSTRACT: Ultra-class haul trucks operating in oil sand face operational and maintenance issues as a result of soft underfoot conditions (Joseph, 2002). With exposure to frequent high g loading events, tire life is reduced due to sidewall belt fexure and frequent ground contact. Therefore, an improved under-standing of the interaction between tires and oil sand is needed. This paper examines the outcomes of a series of static and cyclic loading tests, performed using a scale tire on rigid, sand, and oil sand surfaces. Geometric predictions are made regarding the footprint area and vertical deformation of an ultra-classtire on similar surfaces.

"AbstractThe possibilities of deriving pertinent information about fractures in an oil pay from data obtained by core analysis are investigated. It is shown that it is possible to obtain an estimate of the fractured area per unit volume of the pay, and that the size of the fractures can be estimated if their shape is known. A suggestion of a routine procedure for the analysis of fractures is given.1.-IntroductionMany oil fields are producing essentially from cracks or fractures. Where this is the case, it is important to be able to obtain a knowledge of the size and distribution of those fractures in the oil pay. This knowledge has to be derived from the analysis of cores taken from the fields, as it is generally impossible to follow a fracture through the pay by direct means. The necessity of using statistical methods to extrapolate the meagre information obtained from the cores of the wells is therefore indicated.It is known that the fractures are much bigger than the diameter of the cores; thus, if they strike a core, the latter will generally fall into two pieces. The angle of the fracture with the vertical can be measured and, if oriented cores are taken, the exact position of the surface element representing the intersection of the fracture with the drill stem can be determined. Sometimes the edge of a fracture can be seen in a core. The number of •Cores that show such an edge can be noted. Of course, one has to be careful to distinguish between original fractures in the pay and fractures in the core caused by drilling operations. Only the former are relevant."

"Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has been manufacturing winders since 1949 mostly for the South African mining industry.Table 1 shows that the vast majority of winders have been double drum winders. At the greater depths with larger ropes being employed, it became apparent that multi-rope winders would be needed. The high stress variation in Koepe winder ropes at great depths especially beyond 2000 m, ruled out this possibility. Thus the original concept was borne for the Blair multi-rope winder where the stress level variations in the rope would be as per the well known, tried and tested double drum winder. The Blair multi-rope was also devised to increase payload by using multiple ropes.With the increasing costs of transporting men and material coupled with fact that orebodies are getting deeper, various feasibility studies have been carried out by South African mining houses. For this reason Dorbyl Heavy Engineering has done conceptual design work of both double drum and Blair multi-rope winders with diameters up to 8.5 m dia (still well within our manufacturing capabilities). These feasibility studies have looked at depths approaching 4000 m*.This paper covers the typical duties leading to the choice of single drum, double drum, Koepe and Blair multi-rope hoists on South African gold mines. A brief synopsis of Dorbyl hoists in use in the South African mining industry, with some indications of future trends, will be discussed.With current installed depths of wind approaching 2500 m, the Blair multi-rope hoist has been used extensively for the heavier payloads.Some of the main considerations pertinent to the design of the Blair multi-rope hoist are illustrated together with the implications of using this type of hoist to winding depths of3000 m to 4000 m in the foreseeable future."

"The On-Stream Analyzer has proven, and is still proving to be, an extremely valuable tool for the control of flotation circuits. This paper examines the possibility of going further in the utilization of the analyzer results by using a real-time material balance program to calculate the mass flow rates within the streams of a circuit for process control, analysis and optimization as well as for the detection of sensor malfunction. The material balance algorithm improves measurements and give good estimates of unmeasured variables during normal operating conditions. The potential and limitations of the method are illustrated using results of an application to the Line 3 flotation circuit of Brunswick Mining and Smelting, New Brunswick.IntroductionThe On-Stream Analyzer (OSA) has gained, over the last two decades, the status of key instrument for the control of flotation plants. The OSA is currently used in almost every sulphide flotation plant and its application in oxide mineral flotation plants isincreasing. Commercial OSAs include a sampling system that collectssamples from various streams of a circuit and exposes thesamples to an X-ray beam. The sample then generates X-ray pulsesthat are converted into assays using multilinear regression programs(Leroux and Franklin, 1994). The estimated assays arepassed to the flotation operators via operator consoles, or to controlloops of various degrees of complexity (McKee, 1991), whichmanipulate reagent addition, aeration rate or froth thickness toensure an adequate operation of the plant. Abstract Canada has opened up a geological province in ?Western Canada which offers a new .stimulus to oil exploration geophysics. The problems of instrumental technique, interpretation, and logistics involved in the exploration of this new territory are presented in this paper and some of the efforts being undertaken to overcome them are discussed. The scope of this programme, its possible trend and extent, especially when viewed .against the background of the exploration effort in the United States, is touched upon. Introduction The science of earth physics was first applied to the search for oil on this continent some twenty-five years ago when torsion balance and refraction seismic methods were initiated in the Gulf Coast area of the United States. Since that time advances in the various branches of the science have been sporadic as new fields for their use opened up in the search for deep salt domes as well as less well-defined geological structures; in the application to well logging as part of the exploitation of petroleum; and in underwater surveys, aerial surveys, etc. In the present paper, attention has been concentrated only on the Western Canada plains area because of the recent remarkable growth of geophysics as an oil finding technique in this region. The other prospective oil areas of the West Coast and the Eastern Provinces of Canada are at present of minor importance, although they will undoubtedly receive increasing consideration in the future as accessibility to markets becomes a major factor and more improved geophysical and geological techniques are developed. A vast province in Canada, covering some 655,000 square miles of prospective oil territory (approximately one-half of the prospective oil area in the United States), has provided the new sphere of activity for geophysics (see Figures 1 and 2). Included in this area are immense inaccessible, uninhabited frozen regions which pose a new problem in logistics and operational techniques.

"Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

"The Blind shaft boring method is a mechanised process of excavating large diameter vertical shafts downward from the surface. It is a rotary drilling technique eliminating any requirement for personnel to enter the shaft or access underground workings during drilling and lining phases. Excavated material is delivered to surface carried by a flow of circulating fluid through the centre of drill rods. The drill assembly is suspended from a large A-frame rig and powerful winch at ground level providing vertical thrust to a hard rock cutter head. INTRODUCTION The Southern Coalfields Ventilation Shaft was constructed at a mine, 45 km north-west of Wollongong. The 5 m finished diameter (6.2 m drilled) shaft reaches a final drilled depth of 517 m, the deepest, fully lined blind bored vent shaft to date in Australia. Operated by a mining company in the Southern Coalfields, the expanding mine required a new ventilation shaft and associated surface infrastructure to service future operations. An assessment of future ventilation requirements for the coal seam operations identified a need to improve the capacity and reliability of the existing underground ventilation system in order to ensure a safe and efficient underground working environment. Installation of the new upcast ventilation shaft was determined to be the most cost effective and reliable solution to provide adequate ventilation for underground operations. The completed shaft is smooth and fully lined with steel/concrete composite liners that are hydrostatically sealed. The shaft lining is designed to meet the mine ventilation requirements for a service life of 20 years. The shaft intersects the top of the working section of the coal seam at approximately 513 m of depth. This includes the shaft collar depth and shaft bottom profiled intake section.PROJECT METHODOLOGY AND INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICE The shaft was drilled using the blind bore method, an innovative construction technique and an alternative to the traditional methods of sinking deep and large diameter shafts, such as raise boring and conventional drill and blast shaft sinking. The blind bore method allows the shaft to be drilled from the surface down without anyone having to enter the shaft or the mine during the construction process. This is by far the safest method of shaft construction and is especially suitable for difficult ground conditions where there may be unstable or water-charged strata. As this method involves drilling from the surface downward, shafts can be completed ahead of the underground mine development. Thus, allowing underground operations to focus on development and production without the conflicts of managing ventilation priority for underground contractors and mucking out spoil from excavation workings."
